In an apparent move to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari romps home in his yet-to-be-announced bid for the ruling party’s re-nomination, a strong lobby group within the All Progressives Congress is pushing for elongation of the tenure of the current National Working Committee led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, THISDAY has learnt. This was as a reliable source within APC confirmed yesterday that the party had decided to give Buhari all necessary support to run for a second term in 2019.

A top party source said the current thinking in the party was that Odigie-Oyegun and his NWC should be allowed to stay in office a little longer to enable them organise the presidential primaries that would endorse Buhari later in the year as the candidate of APC in next year’s presidential election.

Odigie-Oyegun and other members of the NWC were elected on June 13, 2014 for a four-year tenure, which would end this year. Though, the former governor of Edo State can seek re-election as APC national chairman, he is said not to be keen to vie again for reasons bordering on age and political considerations. The tenure elongation idea, THISDAY gathered, has gained ground within the party. Those trying to get him to continue as national chairman, and who are also pushing the Buhari re-election move, believe extending the NWC’s tenure would help to ensure stability and avoid internal disruptions, disaffections, and realignments that usually follow elective conventions. Which is why they are keen to push such contest forward, and have it after Buhari’s endorsement as the APC presidential candidate.

According to the source, the approval for a three-month extension of tenure for the NWC may be sought through a non-elective convention to be held in June. It said Buhari loyalists considered Odigie-Oyegun a more trusted person to deliver the ticket of the party to the president without precipitating crisis. They believe that it would be too risky to take the party through two elective conventions in one year due to the negative fallouts of such exercises. Again, the possibility of not resolving the crisis that may result from the election of new national officers in good time may spell doom for the ruling party ahead of the presidential poll in February next year.

Another argument in support of the retention of Odigie-Oyegun is that since he organised the December 2014 national convention in Lagos, where Buhari emerged presidential candidate of the party, which many saw as a big boost for the party ahead of its victory in the presidential election, he should be allowed to replicate the feat.

It is however, uncertain how a key segment of the party loyal to one of APC’s national leaders who ones called for Odigie-Oyegun’s resignation would react to the attempt to extend his tenure.

Many of the governors elected on the platform of the APC have openly supported Buhari’s second term bid. However, there is no consensus yet on the kind of arrangement that would be adopted to hand the party’s ticket to Buhari without undermining the democratic process and incurring the anger of some critical stakeholders. At the party’s last NEC meeting, members unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Buhari, saying he has performed satisfactorily. The national chairman also got a vote of confidence.

Underscoring the need to retain the national chairman, a chieftain of APC and Director-general of Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, told THISDAY yesterday that, “Very few members of our party are in hash tones saying Mr. President should not go for second term, but majority had already endorsed him for a second term. It follows as well that the endorsement of the executive can follow the same line. As it stands in Nigeria today, I will not advise the party go into internal feud, it won’t be in its interest now.”

Okechukwu said that the zoning arrangement in the party, like the other parties in the country, which required the positions of presidential candidate and party chairman to be shared between the northern and southern regions, favoured Odigie-Oyegun’s retention as national chairman. Okechukwu said since Buhari was going for a second term, there was no need for a change of guard at the party’s leadership.

The VON director-general said, “The tradition in liberal democracy has been that if the zoning of the office of the incumbent president is going to remain where it is, the zoning of party national offices naturally falls in the same way because the zoning is either adjudged by the geopolitical considerations or other factors.”

The ruling party has been criticised by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party for failing to hold a convention in the last two years in contravention of its own constitution. However, APC at its last NEC meeting in November tried to correct the anomaly by directing that a non-elective convention be held before the end of 2017. But the leadership of the party shifted the non-elective convention to this year, saying that it would like to align activities leading to its convention with the 2019 election timetable to be released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to the INEC timetable, which was recently released, collection of nomination forms by political parties for national and state elections will be done between August 11 and 24, 2018 while conduct of primaries, including resolution of disputes for national and state elections, will be between August 18 and October 7, 2018. Also primaries for FCT Area Council elections will hold between September 4 and October 27, 2018.

The INEC timetable also fixed commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections for November 18, 2018, with the campaigns to end February 14, 2019. For the governorship and state assembly elections, the campaigns will commence December 1, 2018 and end on February 28, 2019, according to the timetable.

While speaking last year on the mini convention, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said though no date had been fixed for the non-elective convention, the party had asked NEC to fix dates for all outstanding activities of the party before the main elective convention.

Abdullahi had stated, “Like I said after the NEC meeting, because we were unable to hold the convention at the scheduled time – our mini convention scheduled for July 2017 – that means that all the programmes that the party has would have to dovetail into one another. We have the party’s state congresses coming up, we have the mini convention and the elective convention coming up that must happen by the first half of next year (2018).”

A taxi driver accused a 16-year-old boy of stealing N100 in the early hours of Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Area 3 Junction Abuja.

The taxi driver claimed to have had lots of !0 and N20 notes so he decided to help the boy who sells pure water with change.

Things took a fresh turn when the boy claimed that the taxi driver gave him only N60.

An eye witness in the taxi agreed with the driver that he gave him hundred Naira.

'He gave me only sixty naira' said the boy of Hausa descent who could barely express himself in English.

An argument ensued which would have degenerated into lynching of the young boy.

According to a Daily Naija ireporter, the argument grew tense and the taxi driver raised his voice calling him a thief.

A crowd of onlookers soon arrived the scene and luckily for the boy, some onlookers suggested that the case be taken to the nearest police station.

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has postponed orientation camp for 2017 Batch B, stream 2 Corps members in Benue State.

This was disclosed in a statement via its official twitter page.

Heard this and almost cried my eyes off. Each time I get to hear some ladies say, "men are scum", I seldom keep quiet because I have loads of stories and experiences which when shared will not only silence them but may change their mentality about the "men are scum phrase." So, a friend visited my house days back, whilst gisting, he shared a story about a bosom friend of his, who almost committed suicide over the girl he dated. We will use Mr. I as the boyfriend and Ms. I as the girlfriend. I will try as much as possible to cut the long story short.

According to him, Mr. I had been dating Ms. I since 2008, he was in the university then, 200 level to be precise, whilst she was about finishing secondary school. And like many young lovers, everything was good and going fine except the usual "childish mentality" from both parties of course.

Things kept blossoming, everything soft and nice. She got into the university, a private Nigerian university, fortunately for Mr. I, it wasn't one of those universities where phones weren't allowed, so they kept communicating and in fact, since the relationship gradually started maturing, their love kept shinning bright like a diamond.. So bright that other male chyker's couldn't approach Ms. I because almost everyone in campus knew she was "bae-gaged." Yes, she was that proud of her bae then.

Mr. I never missed the opportunity of leaving his university to visit her every weekend, notwithstanding the distance.. Oh, I forgot to tell you, he schooled in far away East, whilst she schooled in the West. And the journey from his university to hers took him 7-8 hours by road and of course, he always used road except extreme cases where he decided to use flight.

Not only did he risk his life plying  bad roads every weekend just to see bae, he also made sure he got stuffs for her, food stuffs and sometimes money (He took it upon himself to bring provisions and money two weekends out of four, monthly). Indeed, bae was balling, no wonder she was so bae-gaged!

And whenever they were on break, back to their respective homes (fortunately they both lived in Lagos), he was with her almost every other day. In fact, both parents knew they were dating. Yes, and they both approved of it. Indeed, Mr. I was happy, he had the acceptance of bae's family members and of course, the heart of bae (So he thought).


A couple of times, when bae resumed a new semester and Mr. I was still home, boss-man will take it upon himself to fuel his car and drive his woman to her uni, not only that, sometimes took provisions to bae's siblings' schools too. Mr. I was in love, so he just wanted to make her family members love him more.. Every guy who has truly loved, will know this feeling.. 

"Mans" was usually broke in school because of bae, you know, bae schooled in a private university and lifestyle was more expensive there. Of course, to please bae and make her family know he was man enough, Mr. I usually soaked garri in his hostel whilst he sent the food stuffs given to him by his parents to his girl.. Love nwantiti right?

Fast forward to his graduation, he got a job which wasn't well-paying like that, but always made sure 50% of his salary went to bae's account. Yes a whole 50%.. (It was at this point I literally started tearing up. A tear dropped from my eye and I am certain my friend saw this. If only he knew that I was tearing up because I couldn't really fathom how mans was so in love that he forgot there is a difference between a girlfriend and a wife). Worst still is, he hadn't even engaged her yet! Oh my gosh!!!!



Well, love was still there (so he thought). All through the years of dating, spending, killing himself to please she and her family, he never for once had any sexual relation with her. Never for once, because she claimed to be a virgin. The best he ever got was a kiss.. A kiss bruh!

Fast forward to when she graduated from university, Mr. I threw a big party for her. Hosted over 30 people (friends and family). Spent close to N650K on the bash (Unbeknownst to his siblings, he borrowed a huge sum of money from his friends so as to make the party a huge success)... And a huge one it was (At this point I started thinking, If only he had engaged her at the bash he threw for her, maybe things would have turned out differently)... Well, who knows, right?





Months after she graduated, he lost favour from his employers, so he was sacked. Things dwindled from his end so his usual 50% to his bae, stopped. 3 months after he lost his job, bae informed him she was going to study abroad, going for her masters' program in Russia. (Funny thing is, she never told him when she even applied nor got accepted). Well, she apologised, he forgave and they were still chilling.

Weeks later, it was time for her to travel, he dropped her off at the airport, they did the usual (kissed and bid themselves goodbyes right in front of her fam.. Yes, they were that close you know!).

Chatting, skyping, doing all sort of things, all these lasted for 3 to 4 months of her stay in Russia. Things became bad afterwards, communication not only dwindled but it dissolved, "mans" was no longer getting attention, "mans" was confused yet still going to bae's house to help out in one or two errands for fam.


To cut the long story short..... Few weeks before she was done with her programme, she sent a text, which read, "We can't be together anymore, I am sorry." .... That was all, 8 years and that's all she sent. No explanation as to why she wanted to call quits. (Cold right?)

Mr. I lost it at this point, became severely depressed, in fact, he was almost going insane. He had to be on drugs. Severally tried suicide but luckily for him, his younger brother came to the rescue. He was eventually admitted in Lagoon for 5 weeks. This was the period bae came back. Bad thing is, she didn't even bother informing him she was coming back and worst thing is, when she eventually heard he was hospitalised, she didn't step her foot in Lagoon hospital.. A cruel world right?

Right as we speak, Mr. I has been in and out of hospital, going through one or two crisis. He has lost touch of reality and become a shadow of himself, whereas Ms. I hasn't bothered seeing him since she came back to Nigeria and in fact, is about to be wed in April 2018.

Love is a beautiful thing only and when it is true and mutual so children of the world, love with your heart, but use your brain!

An 18- year- old 200-level student of Statistics at the University of Abuja, Awal Sani, was on Thursday January 11th, stabbed to death by his mother's rival during a family fued at their home in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. The Nation reports that Sani's stepmum, Rukayat Abdulkareem had confronted her mate, Sani's mother, over their missing husband.

It was while Sani was trying to calm his stepmum that she stabbed him to death.

Younger brother to the victim’s mother who narrated the unfortunate incident, said

“Between 10:00 p.m. and 10.30 p.m,, I heard someone banging on the door and I came outside, I asked her what she wanted and she said she was looking for her husband. I know the woman, they were living close to us here in Pipeline before they packed to Kaduna road. I told her that I would check and see if I can call the husband for her. I went inside, I met my sister and informed her that the man’s wife was outside looking for him, my sister said she was going to meet the woman, I tried to stop her and told her she was not the one the woman came for but she insisted. So I followed her because I didn’t want any problem. We met the woman and then I realised that if they start talking, it may result to another thing. So, I asked my sister to go inside and went to pipeline police station. I invited a policeman, he asked the woman what the problem was, she said she was here to see her husband. The policeman asked her to follow him to the station so she can write a statement and they will return to pick her husband. But she said she was not going anywhere so the policeman left. I went inside the house and the next thing I heard was that they had stabbed Awal. I rushed out, we did all we could to save him. We rushed him to the hospital and the doctor confirmed him dead and we brought him back home. She had left when I rushed out but the vigilante men caught and brought her later and we kept her till the police arrived''
