Hello guys, quick question plz. I have a BSc in Geology and Msc in Petroleum Geology. I got an admission to SAIT for a 2 yrs applied degree program in GIS. I will be starting in September 2020. First year of the course is course work while the second yrs is paid practicum. I would like to know if anyone has ever done the GIS program with SAIT. Plz how easy is it to get a place for the practicum and what is the job prospect after graduation. Thanks

MASSIVE DROP IN TREASURY BILLS DISCOUNT RATES

TREASURY BILLS AUCTION 17TH JULY 2019

91 DAYS -----9.74%

182 DAYS------10.75%

364 DAYS-------11.13%

I sent my filled form for the 91 days primary auction to my account officer on monday and told him to submit it on my behalf cos i am based abroad. He acknowledged it. Today (thursday) I asked him if he submitted it, he said yes and also told me Stanbic won the bid for the 91 days, but I am yet to be debited. I also asked him what day does Stanbic debit people for Tbills, he said it is on Thursday's. It is already close of business and I am yet to be debited. Is it that the account officer is playing a fast one on me cos i am not around? I need your advice.

You can send your instruction on the 15th and confirm if your account or relationship manager received it.

OR

You can choose to go in anytime through the secondary market.

Thanks a lot

Hello my people. I am about to do 91 days primary Tbills with Stanbic bank. Although I am not based in Nigeria,

(1) should I go with the rate of stanbic bank or should I state mine, my account officer sent the form to me.

(2) Secondly, was stanbic bank successful in their last 91 days Tbill primary auction bid?

Thanks all.

Congratulations on your landing. Please is there anything like or similar to CCIS in Ontario?

I don't think so. CCIS is only located in Calgary I guess.

Was wondering what course you intend taking in sait

Looking at doing GIS, It is a 2 yrs Applied degree but you have a diploma or a degree to applied. It also comes with 8 months paid practicum, so basically first us for class, second year is for the practicum. Would have lovee to do Geotechnical engineering, I couldn't see any school offering diploma in it. University of Calgary does a MSC. in it but u must have 2.1 (second class upper), mine is 2 .2 plus MSC.

Finally landed 2 weeks ago as a single man. Passed through Immigration and customs without no problem in MMIA. Both Luggage were over 23 kg while carry on was over 7 kg. The guys at Ethiopian airline stand allowed me to add more weight to the carry on to make it 12kg while the luggages were left at 25kg each. Trip to Adisabba was long, and then Dublin and then Toronto. Couldn't eat the food served in the plane, only ate the bread and Red wine. Landed on Saturday, went through immigration and customs in Toronto without any problem and then the final leg of the journey to Calgary. I am currently staying with a friend who is married. I have done my SIN, Health Card, bought a sim, visited 2 immigration services (CCIS and Mustard seed ministry) in downtown. I was able to get a reduced bus pass for the month of June and paid $37.5 instead of $104 or so. If you are less than 30yrs, You can visit CCIS, they have a 2 weeks employment training. I met a Nigerian there and he told me about the training and also showed me his check . If you attend it without missing a class , they will pay you $900. I couldn't do it cos I am over that age. I have also learnt the bus and train route system after downloading the Calgary transit app. I am also currently studying for the Alberta driver's license exam. Both fields that I have experience in (Geoscience & Real estate )are licensed here, so I am currently looking for a job while I prepare to do a 2 yrs course in SAIT. Please kindly link me up if you have any. Thanks

You @ me so I guess you want me to drop my opinion. I have lots of treasury bills running with GT Bank, and I'm doing another next week. I have never walked into a bank to do tbills. In my opinion, you have nothing to worry about in terms of safety and security of your money. Just don't fall for scam emails and you will be good

@Gogedda welcome to Canada. What province? Nova Scotia?

Thanks bro, Alberta is the choice.

After signing the form, will you just send an email to them to invest in Tbills on your behalf or do you still have to fill the Tbill form like we do whenever we walk into the bank?

@Nnamz

No worries with the indemnity. It just means that they can take instructions from you via your registered email without worrying. I use it myself and I'm resident in Lagos. Just ensure your email is secure always.

Also confirm that you cannot book NTB via your internet banking platform. GTBank has this feature

Alternatively, you can give me the money to invest on your behalf grin grin grin wink wink wink. I promise not to jaaapaa with your money cheesy. Cross my heart and hope to kpai[/quote]

Thanks my brother, I will surely do this.

Good evening house, I recently got my Permanent residency to Canada and I will be travelling in few days time. I have been investing in Tbills for sometime now. I intend to convert some of my money to dollar and put in my dormicillary account so I can withdraw with my dollar card when I get there while I leave the rest in my Nigerian account.

Please how can I invest from abroad while I am away, I currently invest in Tbills with Stanbic. I visited the bank the other day and they spoke about an indemnity stuffs, that will allow me give them an instruction to invest in my behalf. Pls is there a disadvantage to signing this document? I really would like to invest the money in Tbills instead of just leaving it in the account cos the fund is quite alot. Thanks

Good morning house, Pls quick question, can I get a Masters admission in Canada by combining my Bsc in Geology (CGPA of 3.09, second class, lower) and Msc in Petroleum Geology. I intend to study Msc. in Geotechnical Engineering.

Pls has anyone gotten an admission by combining both?

Thanks.
Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 15 by gogedda: 6:24pm On Apr 14, 2019
Good Evening house, Pls has anyone gotten an admission for Msc in Canada with 2.2 (second class, lower) by adding his or her MSc certificate too. I have Bsc in Geology and Msc in Petroleum Geology. I want to do another Msc in Geotechnical Engineering. Do you think the University will consider my Bsc & Msc? I am targeting any university in Alberta.

(2) Secondly, does anyone know any school that does Diploma in Geotechnical engineering in Calgary.

NB: I just got my permanent residency to Canada, I am looking at courses I can do when I get to canada. I once had an admission to study BAPT in SAIT 8 yrs ago but i couldn't go because of money but thank God now, the story has changed.

All contributions are welcomed. Thanks all.

I am not a BA, but in many industries in Canada, experience beats certifications. e.g I have seen so many job seekers with PMP, but with very little or few (less than 5 years) experience in project management. This leaves me wondering how they were able to get certification. My employer won't even look at certifications in BA, PM or IT if you do not have at least 5 to 7 years experience to back it up.

As long as regulations allows an employer to avoid certifications/paper qualifications, then they would go for the person with the most experience.

The reason your friends were advising you to go for a program that has an internship option is because some employers would retain after the training. Getting a foot in the door is very important here. It's the only breakthrough alot of people need to kickstart their career.

Thanks for this write up bro, for those of us who are planning on entrying the project management field in canada with little PM experience, what advice do you have for us. Is there some form of volunteering that one can do to gain the experience or will you suggest we just forget the whole Project management thing and focus on other field? I just recently completed the 35hrs PDU PM training and planing on writing the certification exam as soon as I get to canada. After going through the course, I noticed I haven't even really used the PM tools as defined in the course in my little PM experience

Thanks a lot. Are you in the project management field Already in canada? If yes, how easy is it to get a job in the field for someone who doesn't have any work experience in PM?

NanaF:

If you’re interested in project management and do not have project management experience for PMP, try CAPM. The certificate of achievement you refer to will not do much. Course costs about $11 on Udemy , buy the PMBOK guide for about $50 (or get this in pdf for freewhen you register and pay to be a PMI member) and then take the exam for about $300.

Thanks again for this information. I really appreciate it. Pls bro, would you mind sharing your whatsapp Contact with me via akinsebikano@gmail.com. I would like to ask you some more question. Thanks alot

salford:

All the programs listed are good except for maybe the bachelor's in BGIS and the applied certificate in Project Management. For the former, you will need experience to back up that qualification to easily get a job. Experience in programming or Geomatics.
The latter like a lot of certificates do not carry much weight. Having a PMP, degree or diploma is better than the applied certificate (s) or certificates of completion.

Several colleges and unis in Alberta have co-op programs. you will need to narrow your search to the course you are interested in. cheers

Finally seen someone in my field. Also have Bsc Geology and Msc petroleum geoscience. Although I have been seeing some geology jobs on indeed here and there was one ExxonMobil one and there is even a Canadian govt one now that deadline is in Oct. 2019. However since I hear the oil industry is shaking in alberta I am open to a career change. My sis is in ontario so I plan to go there for family support since I have small children and my hubby isn't relocating yet. I am thinking of project management plan to do to PMP certification here in naija before leaving.

Thanks for this timely and insightful reply, I must say that I really appreciate it. I read that Project management, IT and Construction are good and booming sector in Calgary right now. I have taken my time to check out some courses that are related with PM & Construction and others that I am interested in SAIT. These are some of it.

- Applied project management certificate of achievement

- Geomatic Engineering technology (Diploma-2 yrs)

- Civil Engineering technology (Diploma-2 yrs)

- Bachelor of Science Construction Project Management (Bachelor degree- 4 yrs)

- Bachelor of Applied Technology Geographic Information Systems (Applied degree- 2 yrs)

(1) What do you think about the above courses?
(2) Do you think the certificate of achievement courses generally can get one a good job?
(3) Do you know of any Co-op Program or those with internship in Calgary or Alberta generally?
I kindly await your response and also contribution from our other seniors in Calgary.

- In addition, does anyone has close and personal contact or link to any Realtor based in Calgary. I might also consider this too. I would like to ask some questions. Thanks

salford:

1. You need P. GEO to practice as a geologist. You could however get your Geo in training just like Engineer in training. I haven't seen any new or recently landed geo getting geo jobs. Some of the Geos (oil industry) I know actually lost jobs. Alberta oil sector is not quite down, but it is very down. Na optimization dey reign now for those still operatimg. We have one of the most expensive oil mining process in the world so Alberta took a heavy hit. No suprise Calgary has either the highest or second highest unemployment rate amongst cities in Canada. Office jobs which Calgary is majorly known for were seriously affected.
Are there any other jobs you might be willing tp explore outside the oil industry?

On the brighter side, the Conservative party are likely to win the election in Alberta in a couple of weeks. Although, the conservative government do not control the world price of oil, but maybe just maybe some of the conventional energy investors that fled during the down turn will return since the Conservative are usually against anything green energy or sustainable development.

2. I highly doubt you will get a realtor job that pays salary. They are usually strictly commision. They collect some percent of the sellers sale. If you are good at selling or flipping houses, you could make tons of money. I mean serious tons of money. Why would a realtor need salary anyway when some of the super realtors can sell 6 houses in a good month and make nothing less than 10k on each house sold. The housing industry is one of the biggest industry in Canada for a reason.

Good luck!
