Cyberknight: Be careful what you wish for. Politics as entertainment usually ends badly; politics as quiet delivery more useful to mankind. In any event, what Mr. Farage said is more interesting that how he said it. Effectively Labour have allowed him to capture the narrative, so after trying to move right on immigration to please his voters, they'll now be forced to consider moving left again in line with what Reform has just announced as policy in order to please their own voters who Reform is trying to steal. This is sure to make Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn feel very fulfilled. After calling the UK an island of strangers? e go explain tire cos evidence plenty! Dude has become a case of mistaken identity, in my view, Kolewerk! |

Jamesclooney: Not sure I will call it politics for entertainment (no one does it better than The Donald; I’ve cancelled my Netflix just to watch all the tomfoolery in the Whitehouse). What I’m really talking about is the art of crafting a strong argument— logical thinking, persuasive delivery & even a bit of charisma. Remember Ronald Reagan? Bill Clinton? Barack Obama? Tony Blair? Those are some of the most memorable politicians in the last four decades and they all had their ‘achievements’ to reel out as evidence of their presidency/premiership.
Now compare that with Keir Starmer—every PMQs response seems to circle back to a “£22 billion black hole” or accusations like “Farage is a Putin admirer.” Illogical and zero cut through, hence the shellacking at the local elections.
Then there’s Kemi Badenoch, who’s a straight talker unless it’s about Trump/MAGA, Israel or her alternative proposal (Renewal Programme). Not to mention her extremely hardline stance on immigration, despite the irony that her own mother took advantage of from the very system she now criticises. The hypocrisy isn’t lost on anyone. Anyway she’s a goner, total lame duck.
Back to the topic, it’s not just political leaders who are judged by their rhetorical abilities. Just like we assess people in everyday life—in interviews, conversations, at parties—the public is doing the same with these leaders. At the end of the day, come election time, people have to vote between the options available… unless Cyberknight decides to run, in which case you tick all the boxes and have my full backing (in Naija style, unalloyed support, Your Excellency). And Farage is in this league? hmmmm |

jedisco: Hehe.. this your 'no' carry vex.
I thank God for the covid claps and evident need which made taking away IHS for health workers a sensible thing to do. Even for those working outside healthcare, they already pay income tax and NI which is used to fund healthcare. Unfortunately, I don't see it being removed anytime soon.
True, the cost of regular health insurance in the U.S doesn't seem to be exorbitant and with good enough cover you get prompt and good care. The downside is that it manytimes leads to over-investigation but thats a story for another day. e reach to vex na, on top of it 'no recourse to public funds' and still you're made to feel like a burden or leech to the system, and who says there is no over-investigation here. I know what my wife went through for a so-called diagnosis of brain hemorrhage. Let's not even go there! My take is that the so-called idea of free healthcare is overrated, especially when it's being compared to what happens elsewhere. If people have very bad experiences of what happens in places like the US, people also have unpleasant stories of what happens in the UK. |

jedisco: Is £75k actually top-15% in the UK? Interesting. I agree, certain pay uplifts there are surreal. But even on a direct level, on comparing the pay for most roles - nurses, engineers, IT folks e.t.c, the average pay there does come out significantly higher. This is not even taking into consideration that the U.S is a more vibrant economy with better labour mobility and options to choose from both within and among states. This would allow many build side-gigs e.t.c. Housing is for the most part, relatively cheaper too or at least, you get a bigger house for your money.
Hehe.. Brexit. For some reason, they generally seem more opposed to universlly free healthcare. Maybe it's capitalism at work
The UK system is brilliant but I don't think it justify the tax paid. Or better put, the cost would be much less if certain safeguards were in place. I manytimes tell myself that if people paid £5 per visit (with appropriate safetynets), that would at least cut the number of contacts I had by upto 25%. Imagine what the consumption of petrol would be if it was 'free' at gas stations Free stuff no dey belleful. They will soon be here to remind you that Nigerians are not qualified or there are shootings everywhere, take ya time o! I no like wahala |

jedisco: The UK health model is brilliant but gone are the days of it being the lone-shining star. The entitlement it breeds might ultimately be it's downfall.
IHS is double taxation for anyone paying income tax and NI.
Even if we went to a mandatory co-pay insurance model, it'd cost much less than the IHS to get health insurance for most.
The way resource utilisation in health systems work is like an inverted cone in many regards. It's said that roughly 10% of the population will consume 90% of the health budget. Due to number of reasons, many migrants are unlikely to be in that 10% for a good period. this was the reason they exempted those on a healthcare visa and also refunded those who worked in the healthcare sector who paid IHS previously. I have seen a British couple who migrated to the US do the math to prove that the health insurance they are paying in the US was cheaper than the amount allocated to healthcare from their yearly taxes in the UK. Now, those are citizens born in the UK, before we even talk about immigrants who paid IHS and are not working in the healthcare sector, to even get a refund. omo e get as e be. Like you said, it may make sense to very low-income earners or those not working at all, but to many middle and high-income earners it's a very big NO! |

hustla: 2025 Whitepaper - Much ado about re-election | Opportunity in the midst of chaos
Within every problem or setback lies the seed of an equal or greater opportunity or benefit - Napoleon Hill
You can decide to look at the chaos from 2 angles, one that benefits you and one that stifles you.
On one hand, restricting the care home visas means employers would have to hire internally, lots of spots will also open up. This can be very beneficial if you have upskilled since taking up care / support roles. Have you done your NVQ 3 or 5? Did you go to school for further studies? Did you take advantage of the opportunities in the NHS?
If not interested in HC, did you upskill in your field? Did you make Udemy / YT your best friends or were you making excuses? Roles will open up, did you prepare? Certifications? Were you on TikTok watching DJ Chicken or on Twitter arguing why a Driver's license in the UK is more important than getting your MSc?
"Hidden" somewhere in the whitepaper also is their plans to make global talent visa easier, which makes a lot of sense and is what should have been done since 2023. The requirements for "product led" blah blah makes 0 sense when there are lots of areas you can work that aren't product inclined. Looks like they will make it more accessible like the EB2 / EB1A routes in the US
As seen here - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6821aec3f16c0654b19060ac/restoring-control-over-the-immigration-system-white-paper.pdf - they wrote they would like to "Increase the number of people arriving on our very high talent routes, alongside faster routes for bringing people to the UK who have the right skills and experience to supercharge UK growth in strategic industries"
At the end of the day, it is up to you and your planning, what you did or didn't do with your time and the foresight you have to plan ahead while weathering the storms of UK immigration You're thinking they will make the Global Talent route more accessible? Think again o, the whole brouhaha is actually not about the number of years to ilr or highly skilled whatever, the issue is the number of people they want to give ilr and that's where they will be waiting for everybody whether it's global talent or not. The whole idea is stopping as much people they can from settling in the UK permanently. Good to hear from you again, bruv, especially as everywhere don cast |
