Those routes may have or will be changed in the future, but they were fully legal at the time, just like your forebears came and became citizens but that route was closed later.

I have always found it interesting how descendants of people who were hounded and faced significantly worse discrimination than recent migrants in their days turn around and be fierce arbiters of who is worthy to be here or not. It’s typical human behaviour- Scarcity mentality and when you think those you imagine to be a higher stock than are supposedly doing better or at par with you.

As a Christian one parable or story in the bible comes to mind about a master who employed servants to work for him, he went out in the morning and got some workers, later in the afternoon and evening he went out again and got more workers, meanwhile he agreed with them their wages and paid them but when the earlier workers discovered that everyone irrespective of their arrival got same wages, they went to grumble to the master about perceived injustice 😂. Last trip earlier this year, none of the officers from the various agencies asked us for money. There are cameras everywhere in the places where you interact with them and they were scrupulous about not requesting anything - even indirectly. All our interactions were refreshingly professional.

Several officers were suspended last year and enforcement is much stricter now, per the announcements.

My experience is that where people often have to pay is because they're trying to do things that are against the rules e.g. parking, luggage issues, having more people than allowed accompany them into the terminal etc.

Gaining power with gun is wrong with thisnpresent world standard, and no matter the goodness of such leader, it is not acceptable in this present world. Democracy is what this world has embraced presently, and if you must go against it, then, be prepared to defend it with your life. After all, those who brought democracy did so too. Yes, he may be a lesser devil beloved by his people, but he opposes current world political acceptance; thus, he must be prepared to fight.
