Nigeria: Former Super Eagles' Assistant Coach May Join Iceland's Coaching Crew

Assistant coach of the Super Eagles under Lars Lagerbäck, Roland Andersson has been approached by the Football Association of Iceland to join the coaching staff of the Nordic country ahead of the 2018 World Cup, according to reports.
Andersson is a good friend of Lagerbäck and both Swedes were in the Super Eagles dugout at the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa, and also helped Lagerbäck while he was coaching Iceland at the 2016 European Championship.
"Roland Andersson will probably continue with us. He was a national assistant coach of Nigeria (World Cup 2010)," Freyr Alexandersson was quoted as saying by fotbolti.net.
"He is terribly humble, very smart and nothing complicates anything.
"I learned a lot from him and he is probably the one who taught me the most in being a spy."
Nigeria, Argentina, Iceland and Croatia will do battle in Group D of the 2018 World Cup, the Icelandic team will face the Super Eagles on June 22 at Volgograd Arena, Volgograd.

........................
The Icelanders have started working already by upgrading their bench. In this case getting a former Super Eagles assistant coach. I hope someone in the Nff will contact Lars Lagerbäck and even Bonfere for Intel.
Lagerbäck owes Nigeria. He was the second best paid coach in 2010 world cup.

I don't know how true but I understand Pinick is talking to the Mr Mike Emenalo. Hopefully, we utilise his vast contact in Europe to gather information on our opponents.

Watch that Uzoho. He has that thing. For now I prefer him to Ezenwa. Shaky Shaky gk affects our backline especially Balogun. Let's see them in the friendlies though. 45 minutes each for both Uzoho and Ezenwa.

My brother forget about these sort of training videos. I watched Deportivo play a couple of weeks back, their goalkeeper Reuben had a poor game. The first goal he conceded looked as if he jumped over the ball. If we go by training regimen, then every European goalkeeper should be on the same level as Buffon. But we known that's not the case.

Like I said earlier, the job of a goalkeeper goes beyond catching a ball. The goalkeeper should be technically groomed in the game to the extent that he directs the defence. Hossam El Hadary does not have the sharpest of reflexes but Egypt are very difficult to score against.

If a team like Nigeria must do well in the world cup,we need a highly technical and organised defence. After all, defence wins championship. Spain with all their ticki tacka became pragmatic 1 nil merchants to win the World Cup in 2010.

If Uzoho demonstrates the leadership qualities to lead the team from behind, he gets my vote to start. But a safer bet for this job should be a fit Vincent Enyeama. Men's Senior world cup is not a developmental tournament where an U19, team B player sign up to learn his trade.

FCA Croatian Coach: Nigeria Are No Longer The African Brazil, Praises Moses But Writes Off Mikel & Iwobi

Croatian coach Boris Pučić, who has close links to Football College Abuja, has provided vital information about the Nigerian national team that might come in handy to Croatian manager Zlatko Dalić ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
Pučić revealed that Chelsea's Victor Moses is the only star player on the Nigeria team, and the present squad cannot be compared to the USA 1994 and 1998 teams which paraded the likes of Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha.
''They are not very pleased with the fact that they have drawn Croatia, but who would be. However, they are hoping that Nigeria will win, but I'm just waiting for a day to celebrate, I think we have no reason to be afraid,'' said Pučić to
sportske.jutarnji.hr.
''Obi Mikel plays in China, Moses has been injured for some time and has just returned to Chelsea's first team, while others are all in some side-tiers.
''Iheanacho and Musa are in reserve in Leicester, Iwobi for Arsenal plays a bit more, but Nigeria is not the shadow of the national team that they once called 'African Brazil.
''Simply, there is no star player besides Moses in Chelsea and the team is not close to what we remember from the World Cup in the United States or France that played really well.''
Nigeria and Croatia will face off at the Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad on June 16, 2018 in both countries Group D opener.

TheGoodJoe:

I am not saying Martins is slow but use the term intensity. He has lost speed and is no more the speed demon of the past. However, the demand of the system we currently play rely more on constant running than a sprint of few yards.

The players need to press when the opposing side are building up play and track back to support the team when under attack, attack with pace when we are counter attacking. Not a slight on Martins but I doubt he can meet up with the intensity of our play.

Argentina is done and dusted but it shows the potential of our young players. As I said, the next top quality friendly will determined how prepared we are. We were not prepared in 2002. Playing top friendly games would have exposed the weakness of that team.
When you talk about speed, intensity, determination, you talk about Martins. The guy is a fiercely competitive guy. You cannot say he won't be able to keep up with the pace of the game just by assumption using his age as a yardstick. By the way, it's almost a given that he won't start but he would be an impact sub, a reliable goalscorer.
I dare say, Kelechi has nothing on him when the comes to intensity, speed and grit.

Do you think Kelechi can pull off that goal he scored last week?

Talking about 2002, maybe you it escaped you that
Paraguay were actually a seeded team in that world cup. They were ranked no8 in the world.
You cannot say the friendly was not high profile enough. That Paraguay team were what Chile is currently.

The Irish friendly was another high profile game especially when they never lost in that stadium in 100 games.

what are you on about?

Which form is Martins in? Our next game is three months away, will he still be in form by then or is this another fantasy football team?

I hope this draw will help those who are still creating fantasy football teams realise that the real business has started and we cannot afford to be calling any random name at this time

March is three months away, so any player that wants to be a rave better save his best for January 2018.....

The likes of Dennis, Dessers, Kayode and Nwakeme should also lace up. There is one FW spot up for grabs and anybody can still nick it grin
When Martins waa about same age as Dessers, Dennis and Kayode, he already had the world at his feet and considered a veteran and the most important striker for the Super Eagles.

I'm not a psychic, so I can't say what will happen 2 months from now but, going by what I saw from Martins last week. The speed which he got past those defenders, shot from outside the box and the back flip celebrations.

I can beat my chest and tell you that guy is in top physical condition. Even in better physical condition than Klose (same age) was at the last world cup,I dare say.

The man could be an asset to this team going forward next year, period.

Ebuehi and Idowu's inclusion and brilliant performance against Argentina put a big bomb into the experience talk. They blew such notion away.

We need the best players we have in every role. Experience will not give a player the speed and marking instinct of Ebuehi. It will not give a player the offensive instinct of Idowu.

We need quality, not experience.
You're still taking about that friendly game? Look, we must be careful oh otherwise 2002 will repeat itself all over again.

Recall in 2002, we massaged our egos about going to the world cup with the youngest team. Even before the world cup, the team broke the Irish jinx by becoming the first team to defeat Ireland in Dublin for over 20 years if I recall, solid game against Paraguay with the infamous Ogbeche bicycle kick and a couple of other victories against Scotland and one other team.
We basically played the world cup before the world cup. Unfortunately, when the main event came up, we learnt the hard lesson at the mundial.
I mean, we nearly lost 3 games on the spin.

Make no mistake about it, the Argentina game is now in the dust bin of history. I get livid that we still make songs and dance out of the Atlanta 96 fame. We cannot keep stroking ourselves with that result. We must strive to get better thank goodness Gernot Rohr recognised this by not limiting his search within a particular circle.

I laughed when you made reference some pages back about Martins probably holding the team back due to a lack of pace. I laughed because just a fee years back, Martins was rated the top 2-3 fastest player in the world. You could say he's aged and the speed has dropped but I tell you after watching him sprint past 3 defenders in gear 2, to score last week I knew the guy still has it. Also, I must bring to your attention the case of Justin Gatlin.
You do realise this guy, the current world 100 meters champion is 35yr old, a good 2 years older than Martins. This guy can sprint past any teenage athlete you throw his way. This should tell you it's not about age but ability.

If you stick your head out that Victor Moses will outpace a 33yr old Obafemi Martins, you will wake up one morning and discover you're a dead man.

I'm the coming days, I expect to see mature comments as regards to players invite.

Those against the inclusion of experienced performing players like Martins might start thinking deep and probably adjust their position to reflect the current realities.
Also, people who want us to go with inexperienced foreign born players playing 4man post in Europe will as well wake up and smell the coffee.

I love this tough draw. If we had been drawn in an easier group, the bragging, delusion and pompousity would have been over board, just like they said South Africa was our wife.....

Our local keepers lack fundamentals. We see that even experienced local keepers struggle with basics, positioning, claiming crosses, etc. Ezenwa and Akpeyi are experienced enough to have curbed out some errors.

Ezenwa appears to be a calmer influence but he still lacks Gk fundamentals.

These foreign kids start keeping from 8-10 years and they are taught most of the fundamentals. It does not mean, they will be great keepers.

Even if Okoye does not make the WC, he should join the crop of young players coming up.
How many goalkeepers playing amateur football have you ever seen play in the world cup? Even if they started training from birth.
There are standard please.

Given that our current keepers are really not that good. We need to look for options. No one is saying Okoye should be first choice or that he should even make the WC team. He could just be one for the future.

Youth GKs abroad are often better grounded in the fundamentals of Goalkeeping than many experienced NPFL keepers.

Nigerian keepers often have to go abroad to reach their potential. Enyeama struggled a lot with crosses in his early years with Nigeria.
My brother, forget stereotype.
Every player have their weakness, Europe or no Europe. Enyeama is hardly an imposing figure, it's academic he will struggle in the early stages of his development with crosses. Even at his finest, he still struggled with crosses. Its just a matter of his height disadvantage.

Ospina is about same height as Enyeama, still he struggles with crosses till date.
This should tell you something.

At the highest level, the job description of a goalkeeper goes beyond claiming crosses and making saves. At the world stage, you talk about calmness, leadership and organisation from the back. This starts from the goalkeeper.

Do you really think some 18yr old playing in German Regional West can bring calm, organisation and leadership playing at the world stage?

100% agreement without question.

Let the truth be said currently Osimhem struggling to get on the bench in struggling side at the bottom level of the Bundesliga that narrowly escaped relegation. How many hours of first team football has he played in his entire career huh He is essentially a youth player with a potential yet to be realised.
I didn't want to get drawn into the "experience debate" but most times, one just have to take a stand.

Arguing for experience is not a bad thing but sometimes one should be suspicious of " experience because it sometimes lives door to narrow-mindedness, conservatism and complacency.

For instance, the more experienced Wayne Rooney got, the worse he became and this could be said about many in the game.
Now, when it comes to Obafemi Martins, it appears he has actually got better with experience. When he was a youngster, he was difficult to play with but an absolute nightmare to play against.
Nowadays, he has modified his game and appeared to become a better team player. His partnership with Clint Dempsey was the best ever partnership witnessed in the MLS.

I saw his goal Last weekend, it was pure gold. A great fussion of everything you want in a striker, captured within 8 seconds. The speed, ball control, dribble, shot from outside the box was vintage.

At this point, I must be honest and say he deserves a look in. Let's not forget Russia used to be his play ground when he turned out for Rubin Kazan.
That guy could be an asset.

My interpretation of Rohr’s response is this.
It’s either he is just being diplomatic. More like saying if Osimhen is still in my plans, then I have no excuse not to give a chance to any striker that is scoring,
or maybehe is really thinking Martins deserves a chance to be tried in this current SE. Either way, it’s a good sign. Competition is good.
If the choice was between Martins and Osimhen. I'm afraid, I will go for Martins.

Exclusive: Rohr opens World Cup door to Martins

Obafemi Martins could have a chance to play at another World Cup if he keeps maintains his scoring form, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has told KweséESPN.
The 33-year-old, who plays in China for Shanghai Shenhua, has scored 16 goals in 39 appearances, with his last goal coming in Sunday's 3-2 second leg win over SIPG to lead his team to the Chinese FA Cup title.
The Nigerian also scored the only goal of the first leg, which saw Shenhua progress on the away-goal rule.
Martins also boasts a respectable goalscoring record at international level, netting 18 in 41 appearances, but has only played for the Super Eagles four times since 2010, with his last two appearances coming in 2015, despite impressive showings with Seattle Sounders in the MLS and now Shanghai Shenhua.
However, Rohr says he is willing to chat to the Martins to increase his options up-front.
"Yes, the door is open to all our best players, including Martins. He is scoring a lot of goals and we need to get competition for all the positions, especially centre-forward.
"For now, we have Kelechi [Iheanacho] who is playing not all the time. [But ] we played with Kelechi against Argentina and he did well.
Then Anthony [Nwakaeme] also did well against Algeria and [Odion] Ighalo, who is injured now, did very well against Cameroon. But we have also other players, like the young boy [Victor] Osimhen, and we have to look everywhere.
"We have a lot of opportunities for the strikers, and so Martins, if he is scoring goals, will be welcome."

Bro.... we should try to be objective when discussing Issues related to Nigerian Players, especially Iheanacho on this Thread. We are always too emotional and also look for flimsy Excuses to vindicate the dwindling Performance of the Lad.

Ndidi was signed in January, he walked straight into the Lineup and has never looked back till now. Imagine a Player signed in the Middle of the Season that still won an Award at the End of the Season?!

Is Iheanacho better or more experienced than Slimani?! No one is hating on Iheanacho, neither the Manager is playing Politics with his Exclusion from the Team's List.

Luke Shaw is an English Player, he was the most Expensive Teenager when he was signed by United, so do we say JM is playing Politics by not playing him?!

Until Eric Bailly is injured, he was a Starter while an English Man in Smalling was rotten on the Bench.

Pls..... we ain't helping Iheanacho by overhyping him or creating Excuses for his exclusion from the Lineup or the Team List. If he justifies to play, he's definitely gonna be played, and we shouldn't be regretting his Move away from City.
Well said. Sometimes we tend to be more cheer leaders than analysts.
If I'm to be brutally honest, I will tell you that Nigerians are hard wired to always play the victims card. We blame everyone and everything for our woes.

He's using the "tough love" approach on Onyekuru. It could work or it could damage his confidence.
Sometimes, in life you need someone who loved you enough to tell you the truth.
At Eupen, Henry was probably allowed to run amock and do what pleases him, provided he scored or created something for the drowning team.

At a higher level, that is not acceptable. You are expected to defend, maintain the team shape, create chances and score. The coach obviously see some serious talent in Henry and he's trying to make him grow up.
Hazard became world class when he adapted his game. I suspect the coach wants him to model his game around Hazards.

Theo Walcott's game deteorated when he believed he was better off as a striker. Today, he's neither a striker nor a winger. Henry must be careful.

I drop my pen in the fountain of love.
