I'm inspired to post but from a different angle. I'm not trying to justify the abuse, be it physical, mental, emotionally or verbal. I agree abuse is more pronounced when coming from a man to a woman. Also it might not matter sometimes if the woman is working or not, but one thing which has already been mentioned is the fact that a potentially abusive marriage MUST have displayed its symptoms during courtship, which often time the woman chooses to ignore. A man can only hide his character for so long. Permit me to say some women too can like to push a man to the limit. I'm a firm believer in the man being the bigger party to walk away. Life is too short to entertain all these wahala. Ladies too, when you see these signs, please don't let pressures to get married and flaunt it outside while you have a miserable union, make you ignore those signs.Fact is the bad signs during courtship only get worse after marriage. The good get better and best. |

Ms Nas: Hi everyone! I just stumbled upon this post and have a few questions of mine to ask as well. I graduated with physics albeit with kinda low grades. This is where my uncle came in, and advised me to look for schools that consider the last 60hrs of undergraduate studies for admission. I got in touch with UTSA and they did offer that option. My question is...is my plan feasible? My uncle, who happens to be an American citizen worked with the UN before he retired and has promised me steady allowance and internships during the summer months. Will my grade work against me during the Visa application process? Will very much like answes to my questions. What is your question exactly again? BTW, nothing concerns the embassy with your grades. They are not the ones who gave you admission. |

Don't be such a wussy. You owe no one an explanation to why you broke up or not. It's your life. Never marry out of PITY. From a good family or not, doesn't matter here. Else you can continue keeping her secret, marry her out of PITY and remain miserable all your life. Your call, SIR |

Car Talk / Re: The 2012 Toyota Camry - Hit Or Miss? by gongoaso1: 10:12pm On Aug 13, 2012 |
spiaggia: Gongo aso, While agreeing with you in terms of correlation to previous models, I must point out that Car Manufacturers sometimes depart or take a detour in yearly models. Eg the 2002-2006 Camry is definitely very different from 2007-2011 models. And definitely this 2012 model still has many similarities to the 2011 model. So I don't really get what you are trying to pass across. Manufacturers do this all the time to stay competitive in the market. BizBooks: The interior is definitely the same size. I have driven both a number of times. I stand to be corrected though (no time to google ) Or perhaps I was busy appreciating the much more appealing interior to notice the smaller interior size if so. As to judging the outward size by a mere glance, dunno about that sir. But I make bold to say they are same size. |
Car Talk / Re: The 2012 Toyota Camry - Hit Or Miss? by gongoaso1: 9:00pm On Aug 13, 2012 |
I gotta reply this thread!!! Initially I thought it was a miss too. I did not appreciate the looks and thought it was rather 'flimsy'. Alas, I had the opportunity to drive one from a rental. Mehn that ride is what I call complete. It handled superbly and drove awesomely. @OP, dunno what you mean by it being less roomier than the previous versions, it sure is still very roomy. The greatest plus it had for me was the dash. A huge departure from the drab and frankly boring previous version. The US public have warmed up to the 2012 Camry too and the earlier version is expected to witness a huge drop in prices. For those criticizing the car, I'll say wait till you have driven it, and appreciated it in its entirety closely and not from a distance. 3 Likes |

@smart machine Wow. . . such a long list of questions (60+) If you are really coming to the US to study genuinely, you really do not have to prepare to answer such a long list of questions because during the preparation to gain admission, all of some of these questions, you will have answered or have imbibed in you by now. As king01 wrote above, you just need to convince them you are going to school or remain in the US legally. All the best to the folks on this thread. Cheers 1 Like |
Career / Re: Work Experience Or Further Study. by gongoaso1: 9:38pm On May 18, 2012 |
Nice thread. I think it's about having a choice. A lot of Nigerian graduates are in reality not presented with too many choices, hence the confusion. Case in point, a fresh graduate in Nigeria unable to secure a job immediately upon graduation, perhaps due to course of study, grades or whatever. Next thing is to jump into the band wagon of 'lemme get my masters'. After which 'what next' comes into play, again. As per if the advanced degree is gotten on foreign soil or not, I believe that should not matter, but what to do after the degree. Work experience as Ajanlekoko hinted should never be neglected for the 'glory' of acquiring certificates, as that work experience will still be required in many cases before you secure a good job, even with your advanced degree. I can speak about the US very well though. Scholarships abound but laziness of students not wanting to seat for standardized exams prevent them from tapping into this. However, I'll opine that if you have a choice between a job relevant to your career goals, sieze the opportunity. But should you get a scholarship abroad for an advanced degree 'at anytime', NYSC or not, grab that opportunity! 1 Like |

Jakumo: Anyone driving a civilian status symbol Hummer SUV in a Third World country such as Nigeria should not expect pity from the vast majority of bystanders in the event of a car-jacking. Even if the Hummer happened to have been purchased at a bargain price off a used car lot in Dallas before being shipped to Nigeria, it becomes, on reaching African soil, a vulgar status symbol signifying conspicuous consumption amid the squalor of abject poverty. heheeehee

Be sure to be an active member of NSBE too, I'm assuming you are an engineer. The US economy is picking up and employment for engineers is currently looking up and getting favourable. Well Uncle Sam will be very aiite, its not everyone hell bent on Perm. Residency Meanwhile I know of many Int'l students who do not file 1040 NR-EZ. Many are not even aware of the existence of that form as it is not mailed out with the W2. Anyways each to thier own. Turbotax gives you EIC when you answer a few questions as it applies to your situation. |

davidylan: Not sure about that though, but when I was a student, my later years I got the EIC. Provided your income is less than a certain amount, then I believe you should claim it. Turbotax is a very good software to use. Guides you like a GPS and advises you too. You are very right about grants, fellowships and scholarships being counted as income too, and may have been taxed which you should claim in your tax returns. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Else you will not be able to feed if you keep converting! Might be a lil hard though, but you'll be fine. Cheers. Kay-Dee: Turbotax is way to go I guess. Be sure to claim your EIC too. I have once missed out on it. Sadly 2 Likes |

paris10: ^^^ be in the know how? We just like to make things complicated. This is simple. A spouse of a student (F2) is not legally permitted to work. That is why before she is given the visa, the man has to prove he has the funds to take care of her! All these addendums you are planting in the hearts of those who don't know hardly work! Which permission lies with the INS? how many people do you know the INS granted permission to work with F2 status? even F1 to work outside campus? Brother, its not black and white. Let's not deceive people, rather educate them on the realities on ground. Cheers 2 Likes |

I recall I used to shop by scanning through the price lists. . .I trained my eyes to always 'catch the lowest price'. As a fresh student, you want to forget brand names. -Paying rent Stay off campus. Its usually cheaper, and you get to do your thing at your own time. . .come in and go out as you like, cook anything and host anything -Doing assignments/Research and thesis Sincerely I have no advice as per that. If you like, if dem give you assignment, no do am :/ -Reading plans There is light no reading with candles. In other words, make hay in the sunshine. -Getting a phone line and cheaper plan Best bet is to find a family member and join a family plan. Lucky to find a God sent Aunty who paid my phone bills till I graduated. -Getting scholarships -Graduate/resident assistantships Scholarships are everywhere. With a lil effort on your part, you are good. -Owing a used car (if necessary), Getting a bus pass Bus pass if your town has a functioning transport system. Stay as close to campus as possible if you live off campus. -Getting a licence -Getting a State ID Get your docs together. I think I-20, birth cert and a letter from your int'l office. -Making the right friends. No advice on that. -Getting a job on campus/off campus Not easy to secure a job on campus, don't bank on it. But there are jobs though. RA's, library, drivers. . .so on. Any one you get, grab it so you can atleast have a SSN Keeping it simple, get to school, try to live within your means. Focus on the end game. . . your degree that is, do what is required, pray and all will be well. As you carry come, na so you go dey.
