Im not a Lawyer, but my little knowledge of the law tells me there are three serious grounds which Nnamdi Kanu can overturn his conviction when he files his appeal at the Appeal Court.

1. Kanu was convicted under a none existent law. Section 36(12) of the Constitution is unequivocal:

“A person shall not be convicted of a criminal offence unless that offence is defined in a written law in force at the time.”

And yet Kanu was made to plead guilty or innocent in 2024 based on the 2013 anti terrorism law that was removed in 2022. This is why Kanu kept shouting at the Judge 'show me the law!'

2. The Judge convicted Kanu based on evidence he had already thrown out. During Kanu's trial, the DSS brought video evidence where they claimed Kanu said he was IPOB's leader. Kanu's legal team objected to the video stating that law required that any statement made by Kanu while in DSS custody was invalid if his Lawyer was not present. The Judge agreed with this and threw out the evidence. So it was shocking to see the judge go back to the evidence he had thrown out, and used it to convict Kanu on at least two counts.

3. The Judge denied Kanu his final written address. This touches on fair hearing. During the trial, the Judge admitted into evidence, several broadcasts made by Kanu despite objections from Kanu's defence team. The Judge ruled that Kanu would have the chance to address the broadcasts in a final written address. So it was shocking that the same Judge would deny Kanu his chance of final written address, and when Kanu protested in court at this, the Judge ordered that Kanu be removed. When a Judge denies an accused a final address at the charges brought against him, and rushes to Judgement, fair hearing has been breached.

“His attendance is not required, though the appearance of his representative may be required. The rights of a defendant are different from the rights of a convict,” Justice Omotosho noted.

Justice Omotosho also put the question to lawyers present in court on whether Kanu’s attendance was required before his record could be compiled, and they responded in the negative.

Advising Emmanuel again to engage a knowledgeable lawyer, the judge added that any lawyer grossly inadequate in appellate procedure should stop misleading the public.

“I think it is high time we address the right opinion. Appropriate legal advice is necessary,” he said.

The law used to convict Kanu wasn't repealed as claimed.

The law was simply amended by expanding it.

The amended law even stated clearly that the new act did not see to an end of all ongoing cases or convictions as those were still captured in the new law.

It is also not the Judge's duty to guide any party before it especially an arrogant defendant who had sacked his own legal team to represent himself .

The judge's only role is to look at the facts and evidence brought before it.

That is why Justice Omotosho did not respond to kanu's outbursts in court demanding that Omotosho should point out the section of the criminal code he was standing trial for.

Omotosho's final ruling is available online and no single lawyer has faulted it rather the ones from your side are now doing whataboutism and now begging for President Tinubu to grant kanu a release based on a pardon.

If they have an argument against Omotosho's final ruling , why are they not all appealing his conviction?

Speaking of appeals, Kanu's appeal will not be challenging Omotosho's ruling but will rather be more interested in a reduced sentence which will be denied since Omotosho was magnanimous enough to sentence kanu to life instead of the death sentence he got.

Kanu will spend a good length of time behind bars because I don't see Tinubu releasing him .

Tinubu will leave that decision to a northern President who I know will in turn deny Kanu a pardon.

So Kanu has at least 14ys to spend until 2037.

You are wasting your precious time explaining anything logical to these people. Allow them to open as many sugary threads to make themselves happy in their heads on Nairaland.com. When every region in Nigeria was busy building a new nation, the East was battling an existential crisis. 

From 1967 to 1970, no other region felt the full weight of the war. 

Only Igbo people. Only our homeland witnessed starvation used deliberately as a weap0n. 

And when the war ended, even Ojukwu expressed regret and urged Ndi Igbo to begin the long road of reintegration, political participation, and rebuilding. Yet many clung tightly to the victimhood and unresolved pain of that era. That is where the trau*ma bond began.

Most families did not tell their children the truth about the w ar. Survivors were too busy rebuilding. There was no time for communal healing or emotional processing. 

In just three years, Ndi Igbo lost generational wealth, land, institutions, businesses, careers, and stability. They had to rebuild from nothing. And because the pain was never acknowledged, the wound remained open and waiting to be exploited.

Decade after decade, whenever it was finally time for Ndi Igbo to consolidate political power and strengthen regional institutions, a new charlatan without aka oru , with no legacy, no governance experience, nothing to show for themselves , would rise and weap0nize Biafra for personal gain.

They knew one thing: invoke “marginalization,” trig*ger the old scar, resurrect the w ar trau ma, and drag Ndi Igbo back into 1967 psychologically.

Then came Kanu, the most charismatic and explosive of the agitators before Ekpa.

KANU: THE ACCIDENTAL NATIONAL STAR

Kanu had been making noise on Radio Biafra for years, but it was his first arrest in 2015 that thrust him into national and international fame. Suddenly, a man who had been fringe became the face of Igbo agitati0n. Protests erupted. Diaspora groups mobilized. And, for the first time in decades, Igbo leaders , governors, senators, traditional rulers , publicly advocated for an agitator’s bail. They thought they could use that to score political points at home and political negotiation points at the center. 

That singular moment inflated his ego and convinced him that he had divine authority. 

After his release on bail, Kanu began craving that attention and national fame. He realized how easily he could command crowds and undermine established leadership. 

When the courts tightened his bail restrictions, Kanu chose not to comply. Instead he instigated a scuffle, and he escaped, resurfacing abroad as a fugitive , and used his fugitive status to intensify his rhetoric.

FROM SECESSIONIST TO WARLORD

Rather than tempering his actions while on the run, Kanu escalated dramatically. His mission was no longer self-determination through political means, dialogue, or referendum. It wasn’t even secessi0n in the practical sense; he realized early on that secessi0n was impossible.

His new mandate was darker:
Balkanize the region. Make it ungovernable. Create enough chaos that politicians would have to negotiate with him , even to hold elections.

He understood that Nigeria was fighting Boko Haram and bandits on multiple fronts. He believed Nigeria could not survive another conflict. So he shifted from activism to armed struggle. 

FORMING ESN: WEAP0NS OF OUR MA SS DESTRUCTI0N

While on the run, Kanu formed the Eastern Security Network (ESN). 

On paper, it was “self-defense.” In reality, it became the weapon of mass destruction that terr0rized Ala Igbo. He equipped them, radicalized them, and gave them ideol0gical permission to k*ill, anyone. He convinced them that the enemy was everywhere and he controlled them through terr0r, charisma, and abs0lutism. He called it command and control( auto pilot).  

SIT-AT-HOME AND THE CvLT OF FEAR

Then he issued the first sit-at-home, backed by threats that anyone who dis0beyed would be ki*lled. His followers acted on that thre*at without hesitation. People were murdered on their way to work. Cars were burned. Markets were emptied. The East was held hostage — not by Nigeria, but by an Igbo man in exile. The sit-at-home started under the guise of boycotting elections first, then to Biafra Rememberance day and this set the tone and blueprint for subsequent sit-at-homes ordered by IPOB. 

When Kanu said, “If I give an order in the South East, who is that person that will dare disobey?”
He meant everyone:
— his followers,
— the ordinary masses,
— business owners,
— elders,
— traditional rulers,
— even the politicians.

And he wasn’t wrong.
Theory had become reality.
Fear had become law.

A REGION WITHOUT LEADERSHIP

Just so we are clear, Igbo leaders lost their mantle long before Kanu arrived. For decades, the political class eroded trust with c0rruption, selfishness, weak advocacy, and zero vision. Nature abh0rs a vacuum. Kanu saw that distrust and weap0nized it. That is why even politicians and public figures who now defend him could not speak up when it mattered.

Their own communities didn’t respect them anymore.

Kanu shattered what little political order remained, polarized families, and positioned himself as the only true “voice of the Igbo.” 

By the time he was re-arrested and brought back to Nigeria, his movement had already fractured. Into many offshoot, factions, departments. They operated on the mandate of his auto-pilot : obey the last command.

  His own miscalculations and internal conflicts within IPOB weakened him. The once untouchable figure soon became a prisoner , literally and symbolically.

His trial, the charges, the judgment , all of it slowed the machinery of IPOB, but it didn’t kill the ideology. A new vacuum emerged, even more dangerous than before.

AND INTO THAT VACUUM OF ABSENCE WALKED SIMON EKPA.

Ekpa studied the playbook, the psychology, the fundraising, the trauma, the fear , and took everything Kanu did to a darker level. Kanu himself publicly approved him and urged his followers to follow him. Kanu terr0rized the East with his public orders for his boys to invade prisons, k*ill military and police , and innocent Igbo people , Ekpa added his own flair and industrialized the terr0r. Kanu operated from the same place of delusion mixed with charisma.

 They both operated from cold calculation and profit.

Ekpa like Kanu realized one thing, 
Poor people at home cannot finance a revolution, a revolution in their pockets that is...
But a frigh*tened diaspora Igbo can.

All Ekpa had to do was keep the blueprint set by Kanu:

— weap0nize marginalization,
— weap0nize fear,
— weap0nize nostalgia,
— weap0nize vi0lence,
and present himself as the “true successor” of Kanu’s struggle.

IPOB unleashed the deadliest version of their sit-at-home , the one was every Monday, the one that destr0yed businesses, education, transportation, and economic life in Ala Igbo. They sent orders from the radio broadcasts and social media and the East bled.

Not even Bok0 Haram had ever shut down the entire North. Bandits could never shut down the entire Northwest. But men living comfortably outside of Nigeria shut down the entire Southeast every Monday for years.

This is the evolution of our exploitation , from Uwazurike 's MASSOB, to Kanu 's IPOB/ESN, and finally to Ekpa’s own terr0r franchise.

This is a fair account of the crisis in Eastern Nigeria engineered by Ojukwu,Uwazuruike,Kanu and Ekpa.

Take it from someone who once lived and worked in Sokoto for 6 years. It is not a pleasant place to reside as per the harsh weather coupled with the swarms of flies at day time and the hordes of mosquitoes in the night.
So facing reality it is up to Nnamdi Kanu to count his teeth with his tongue and use his brain by lodging his appeal fast and throw himself at the mercy of the Justices of the appellate court and hope they show him mercy and reduce the life sentence to like 20 years.
On the other hand he is free to follow the advice of persons like you,the IPOB pastor in this story or his charge and bail lawyers. He can continue to ask the Justices to "show him the law" OR continue to tell the Justice that, " He does not know the law." OR he can continue to be unruly towards the Justices and say they are corrupt.
The choice is left to Nnamdi Kanu because he is the person behind bars. He knows where the shoe is pinching him.
