Enugu, Nigeria – A coalition of Igbo socio-political groups has called on the people of the South East and South south to begin preparing for renewed Biafra agitation if an Igbo candidate fails to secure the Nigeria' presidency in 2027.

In a statement released on Monday, the group said it had become clear that repeated appeals for power rotation and equity had not yielded results, and that part of the old Eastern Region remained sidelined in Nigeria’s political arrangement.

“The South East and South south were once one administrative unit as the old Eastern Region,” the statement read. “We share history, geography, and common interests. It is painful to keep depriving the Igbos of getting Nigeria’s presidency while other regions have taken multiple turns.”

The group said that after over 50 years since the civil war, the South East remained the only zone yet to produce an elected president in the Fourth Republic. It warned that if this injustice continued in 2027, the people would have no choice but to return to the question of self-determination.

The coalition urged all indigenous people of the old Eastern Region in the South East and South south to start making plans, including selling off assets and investments outside both regions, in anticipation of a possible political separation.

It also addressed non-indigenes living in the South East and South south, saying: “We appeal to Yorubas, Northerners, and other Nigerians residing in the old Eastern Region to begin making peaceful arrangements to return to their native lands. This is not a call for violence, but for an orderly process should the people decide to pursue a separate state.”

The statement added that the group would pursue its objectives through peaceful advocacy and international engagement, but warned that the patience of the people was running thin.

Political analysts say the comments reflect growing frustration in the South East over perceived exclusion from the presidency, even as major parties have yet to announce their zoning arrangements for 2027.
