At this time the NCNC/NPC alliance government had practically broken down. It was at this point Nnamdi Azikiwe began to instigate Ibo military officers to prosecute a coup. Officers instigated by Azikiwe included Ojukwu,Nzeogwu,Onwuategwu,and his relative Ifeajuna. This was why the January 15th 1966 coup was so lopsided and was the reason why Azikiwe was able to hide in the Caribbean under the guise of medical check up while the coup was going on.
