Getting traffic to your website can be difficult especially when you’re just starting out. People create websites for a number of reasons to include; • Making profit online by selling the products or services of others • Giving their business an online presence • Providing an information resource to people with the same interest as themselves • An outlet for creative expression • Starting up discussions and exchanging ideas and views on certain issues Whatever your reason for creating a website or blog, no one will visit your site if it isn’t optimized for great online visibility. But how do you go about that? The answer is SEO. Lots of times when I speak with newbie bloggers and business owners about the need to invest in digital marketing strategies that work, we get to the area of SEO and they’re always like, “what’s that?” The acronym seems strange to them, and so I have to always explain that the term stands for Search Engine Optimization. I speak with them for a few minutes about all SEO entails and end my short lecture with the words “your blog or business website won’t thrive online without being optimized for search engines.” If you are on the verge of creating the website or blog of your dreams or already have it set up, it is of dire importance that you hold SEO in high esteem. Not saying there are no other digital marketing strategies that work, there actually are, but none does it better than SEO. One amazing benefit of investing in SEO is that for years to come, search engines still sends you traffic. Unlike Pay Per Click (PPC) and Social Media Marketing (SMM), the results and achievement of SEO lasts for a longer period of time. If you use Google as much as I do, you must have noticed certain web pages on the SERP with a date that goes way back as 5 years ago. What that implies is, Google still sends that website traffic for an SEO optimized content published five years ago. Let’s get on with it. Wish to get your website or blog ranking on Google’s search engine results pages? Here’s all you need to do: 1. Ensure You Have A Great Website By this, what I mean is your site needs to have an amazing structure. How long does it take a user to find a page on your website? If your utmost wish is to have your site ranking high on search engines, it is imperative that every page and navigation link on your site be laid out as easy as can be. Giving your site a good architecture not only helps users who visit your site, it also helps search engine crawlers understand your site and find other pages to index. Your site should be easy to use and navigate through. 2. Keyword Research Creating content for your website or blog without first doing keyword research is like starting a business without proper market research. By doing keyword research, you are able to find out what keywords and topics are the hottest in your industry in terms of search volumes. Identifying those keywords and creating killer articles out of them gives you the chance to both earn a place of great visibility on the SERPs and claim some of those click-throughs your competitors have been enjoying. 3. Publish High-Quality Content Content is and will always be king. High-quality content is and will always be king. Don’t just write for the sake of writing; write to answer someone’s question or provide valuable information. Does your content provide the answers or information a user seeks? When someone searches for something on Google using a keyword or query, what the search engine does is that it presents the user all relevant answers to their query. These answers come in the form of informational and helpful contents ranked in terms of their relevance. Later on in this article, we’ll get to talk about how Google evaluates a content’s quality. In order to have your website or blog performing brilliantly on search engines, it is important that you create contents that are helpful and optimized for the right keywords. Another area to pay attention to when creating content for your website or blog is the number of words used in the piece. It’s a well-known fact that search engines favor websites with content of 500 words and above. Poor or thin content are some of the reasons why users who click on a site immediately bounce back to the search results. And when Google notices you have a high bounce rate, it wastes no time to demote your page in its search engine ranking. So create quality informational content that hits and exceeds 500 words, and you’ll earn your website or blog a high place on the SERPs. 4. Don’t Keyword Stuff If there’s anything Google hates, it’s a keyword stuffed content. This is what one looks like: "If you're looking for the best laptop bag, look no further. Our brand offers the best laptop bag that you could want for business or pleasure. With padding in our liners and a special pocket for your charger, this is the best laptop bag for travel or school." Google sees such as an attempt to mislead search engines, and will punish your page for that. 5. Ensure Your Site Loads Fast If you wish to up your ranking on search engines, it is important that your website and its pages load fast. A slow page load equates a bad user experience. When a visitor has to wait for extended seconds or even minutes before a page on your site loads, the result is a demotion in your search engine ranking. Google pays close attention to the sort experience users have when they visit your site so ensure your site provides visitors with the best possible experience. 6. Acquire Quality Backlinks From Authority Sites Links from other sites that point to your site are referred to as backlinks. This is one way through which Google rates the quality of a website and its content. Google doesn’t understand great content, but it sure understands popular content. A content’s popularity is how Google evaluates its quality and rank-worthiness. By building quality backlinks, you can increase your website or blog’s search engine ranking. Trying to rank for highly competitive keywords can be difficult, but with a good number of quality backlinks, even that can be achieved. Don’t waste your time getting backlinks from low-quality sites as that won’t do you any good. Instead, work towards getting backlinks from authoritative and relevant websites. The question now is how does one build quality backlinks? Powerful backlinks can be achieved by doing the following: Creating great content – Sometimes, the content of a website is so good that authority sites can’t help but link to it. Running link building campaigns – Guest posting Don’t buy links, earn links. 7. Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly We currently live in the mobile-first index age. Mobile-first indexing means Google now indexes and ranks the mobile version of a site before the desktop version. So if you wish for your content to show up on search engine results pages, you must ensure the mobile version of your site is as responsive and optimized as the desktop version in terms of site architecture and page load time. Doing well on search engines isn’t easy most especially when you’re just starting out, but by doing everything stated in this SEO ranking guide, you should be the proud owner of a successful website or blog in a space of time. Please note the results of an efficient SEO endeavor won’t happen overnight. Search engine optimization is a long term investment so you should be willing to wait a bit before your good work starts paying off. I read on here an informative SEO thread created by a great guy some days ago. He made good points, but I had issues with the first point he stated; where he said Keyword Optimization Is Dying. I mean how can a supposed SEO expert say something like that? It still baffles me. I really don't want him misleading others so I decided to create this thread from a post I recently published on my website. I'm a content writer and can say from experience that the first point he stated is totally wrong. I recently created a high quality content for a foreign client with the key phrase "The Anatomy of a Cat's Whiskers." Guess what? A week after the article was published on my client's blog, it showed up on the first page of Google's search engine results for the query "a cat's whiskers" and "anatomy of a cat's whiskers." All I'm trying to say in a nutshell is, keyword research and keyword optimization isn't dying, and every blogger who wishes to get their page ranking high on Google shouldn't refrain from doing both. |

Social media is such a mighty force to reckon with in this age, but it’s quite sad that only a few businesses and solopreneuers really harness the power of social media to get clients for their business. No one can deny there’s a whole lot of fun to be found on social media. I know of people who only hop on their favorite social network when they feel bored, and they’re never disappointed. A few minutes to getting online and they’re full of smiles and laughs as they stare at their phone. It’s good to be on social media for the fun it provides, but that shouldn’t be the main reason why you use social media, especially if you have a digital skill or own a business. We live in a time where almost everyone has a presence on one social media network or more, even our elderly folks. According to Statita, there are about 3.9 billion internet users in the world today, and 2.77 billion of them have functioning social media accounts. When social media is used right, you get the opportunity to discover individuals who are in need of the product or services you offer, and are willing to pay heavily for it. Leveraging social platforms as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram can be one of the most effective ways for your business to reach more prospects and clients. In my career as a freelance writer, I’ve worked with a great deal of ciients, majority of which I met on such freelance marketplaces as Fiverr and Upwork. Now the pay I got from these set of clients have been good to an extent, but my highest paying clients of all time have come from social media – Twitter to be precise. Getting a client on Fiverr who’s willing to pay you anything more than $10 for a 500 word article is a herculean task, especially when you’re a new seller on the platform, and don’t come from a native English-speaking country. It is same on Upwork. I had a hard time finding the right client who was willing to pay me at the rates my level of expertise deserved. All I got were people from the U.S., U.K, India, Canada and the likes asking me to write articles for them at freaking low rates. This continued until I turned to social media to get more leads for my business and to discover who actually needed my service. And it did pay off in a big way. I made use of the Twitter search feature and connected with my first high-paying client. Her Tweet about needing a writer for her blog was five days old when I discovered it, but I replied anyway stating I was up to the task. She asked for samples of past works which I gladly shared with her, and that was it. She was impressed with my samples and offered to pay me $70 for a 500 word article. Soon enough, she contacted me for another project. The new project required me to create ten 500 word articles for her and she paid me a total $700 for it. How excited I was! I got the job done in a few days. Ever since I discovered the fact I could harness social media to get clients for my freelance business, I never relented in my effort to use this 21st-century medium to generate leads everyday. And so far, I’ve been able to make meaningful connections and acquire new businesses. Bottom line of it all is, if you have a business, it is imperative that you leverage on social media to convert those on your preferred social network to high paying customers. The social media space is a place where potential clients for your business can be found. So don’t just be on social media to get entertained. Discover foreign and local prospects for your business and connect with them today. AngelUriel:Thanks a bunch! |
It was the year 2014 when I first thought of starting a blog. More than anything, I wanted to write, express my thoughts, and have people from every part of the world find my articles online and read my content. I had no money to purchase a domain name or pay for hosting back then, so I resorted to using WordPress’ free hosting platform. Prior to starting the blog, I only wrote in a journal I kept to myself. But with the blog, I was able to reach a vast audience who commented not just on the opinions expressed in my blog posts, but the way I wrote. Most of the content I published on the blog weren’t SEO optimized. I didn’t even know what SEO was all about back then, but I was a heavy promoter of my posts. After publishing a post, I wasted no time to share it on Twitter and Facebook. I also pleaded with friends to do same on their timelines. It didn’t end there as I moved to submit the article on sites with a high DA and PA for the sake of getting high quality backlinks. I recall a few times when I had like over a thousand folks visiting my blog in a single day thanks to social media clicks, backlinks and the WordPress community. There were also days when I got no more than five visitors on the blog regardless of how much hard work I put into promoting each article. So it was the case of working extra hard only to get little. If only I knew about SEO and keyword research back then, I would have just created an SEO optimized post, promoted it a bit and still have Google send me free traffic not just during the period the article was published, but for months and even years to come. Now that’s the beauty of SEO;-) For a free hosted blog, it was doing pretty well and had almost 2000 subscribers. But regardless of how much hits and clicks it was getting, most people attached no value to the blog because it was built on free hosting platform. I was asked questions like: what serious blogger creates their blog on a free hosting platform? And then this happened. In no time, job offers began rolling in. Offers like “we would like you to write for us.” I was really amazed at the offers. I was unemployed back then and to have had someone offer me a job that required me doing something I loved was astonishing. I took one of the writing jobs and was tasked with creating several well researched articles a week. With the new commitment, I had no time to churn out blog posts as much as I used to. It was really hard juggling both tasks of writing for my blog and my client’s. At that point, I made the sad decision to delete the blog. Why keep a blog if you’re not going to have it frequently updated? I asked myself. The years after I took my hands off blogging saw me work with several foreign agencies as a freelance content writer and copywriter. I also took online courses on social media marketing, search engine optimization and other areas of digital marketing. This was indeed a period of growth for me. I knew I’d one day bounce back to share the knowledge of all I’d learnt so far on my incredible journey of working and earning online. I never gave up on the dream of one day setting up my own website, and adding value to the life of those who found my content online. I’m mighty glad the dream is become a reality today... https://markandwrite.com/2019/02/20/welcome-to-mark-and-writes-blog/ |
