R&B star John Legend is joining the cast of his hit slave drama “Underground” to portray famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The “All of Me singer” serves as an executive producer of the show, which centres on America’s Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses and secret routes created to help African-Americans escape bondage before slavery was banned at the conclusion of the United States Civil War in 1865. Now Legend will step back in time himself to bring author, orator and political reformist Douglass to life onscreen in the second season of Underground. Douglass isn’t the only historical figure to feature on the show – Aisha Hinds will play Harriet Tubman, while Chris Chalk will portray another key abolitionist, William Still, on the series. Brooklyn Rapper Desiigner is unarguably one of the most successful breakout artists of 2016. His single “Panda” spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, making him the youngest male to land in the top spot since 2007. The Brooklyn rapper’s record label announced the smash hit is now triple platinum. Def Jam revealed the news on Twitter: “Today #PANDA hits 3x’s PLATINUM! still rockin’ @LifeOfDesiigner !” This weekend Desiigner has the chance to earn more major accolades. Former member of the legendary Plantashun Boyz group, Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo, once known as Blackface , who now goes by the pseudonym BlackfaceNaija has just released his sixth studio Album. The singer and songwriter is famous for songs like Ahead of the game and Hard life featuring Alabai. The Album titled The Defender boasts of 16 tracks and features a range of acts from the old school acts like Azadus, Marvelous Benjy to new school artist as Yung6ix. From the look of things I fear for the success of the Album. Music to me is a business venture. Music artistes are like your everyday business individuals, investing seasonally on certain projects, be it an Album, a mixtape or just a track. And as in the business world every investment targets the profit goal. It’s really a terrible experience for a Music artist to invest so much time and money on a certain music project that at the end of the day yields little or no profit. I just hope BlackfaceNaija hasn’t waisted his time and fund on an Album with zero potential for success. Source: https://blarckbillboard./2016/08/23/blackface-releases-sixth-studio-album/

Joey Akan of Pulse.ng shares the story of a friend of his who met Wizkid at a club and took Wizkid for a scammer. Enjoy: I once went to Quilox, where I was having a party with some of my friends. We were having a good time, dancing and sharing dirty jokes. All of sudden I feel dizzy, and needed some rest. I found the nearest chair, and dashed for it. Another young man was resting too beside me, and I said ‘hello’ in courtesy. “Hi how’re you?,” he replied. “I’m fine. Wild night eh”, yes. I’m just waiting for my manager to finish some business and then we can go home.” He looked visibly tired. “You mean to say you and your manager at work club together? That’s some nice office culture. Where do you work?” I asked. There was a puzzled look on his face. “You don’t know me?” I thought it was rude. I had only just met this stranger, and he expects me to magically know him. Perhaps know his history, and also his mother’s favorite dress. “Excuse me, I have never met you before, and I can’t remember us being acquainted in any way. Who are you please?” The perplexed look on his face turned to mild anger, and he said: “You are serious, you don’t know me? I felt unsafe, and taught I was about to be scammed. I have heard stories of people being ripped off with the ‘familiarization’ technique. This man is a stranger acting like he was entitled to my acquaintance. I have never met him in my life. I felt insecure. So I brought out my phone, and made the threat. “If you don’t get off me, stranger, I will call security to throw you out. You are making me unsafe.” The young man was clearly offended and angry now. But I didn’t care. He was trying to scam me. Just then a couple of guys came by and whispered to him that it was time to go. He was still angry, and tried to express it to them. There was loud music, and he had stood up, so I didn’t hear what he was saying. But they calmed him down, and he followed them out. I simply felt thirsty, and walked back to my crew who were observing the encounter. “Why did you make Wizkid angry?” one said. “Wiz….who?” I replied. “That’s the biggest African musician right now”. “Oh.” I said. As I reached for the Hennessy and cranberry juice. There were more pressing things on my mind. Like how to get my party back on track, and flush my throat with some alcoholic goodness. “I don’t know Wizkid, and I don’t f***ing care. Period.” The whole conversation is quite hilarious. People are beginning to Label this individual as a Pop illiterate, simply because he didn’t know Wizkid. But should that be the case ? The individual may have just been one who seldom listened to African music or who didn’t fancy music in general at all. Everybody can’t know Wizkid afterall. By the way I wonder if I’ll recognize Wizkid if I see him in the flesh, without being surrounded by his usual wall of bodyguards. Plus one can’t even tell the real Wizkid from the fake Wizkid these days where you have too many Wizkid look alike and wannabees. There is little doubt that rapper Rick Ross is looking a lot slimmer than when he first gained recognition. What forced him on the journey to become healthy was the two seizures within six hours he had in 2011 which required his private jet to make emergency landings. He was weighing 300lbs at that time only sleeping for 3 hours a night and having no qualms wolfing down 24-oz steaks at 4AM. The rapper has shed 75 pounds after his doctors warned him his excess fat could kill him if he does not take on a healthier lifestyle which includes a workout regimen. “I’m still losing weight, and now I’m starting to build hard muscle in places,” he tells Men’s Health magazine, explaining he has been taking his weightloss slowly—if I quit all the things I loved cold turkey, I knew it would only be so long before I went back to my old ways.” “My advice for anyone looking to lose weight is to not make it feel like a job.” he added. The latest issue works toward promoting music artists and their creative works. Here is what publisher, Sesan Adeniji had to say: “Find me an artist and I will show one of the most instrumental people in life. To imagine how essential toys and cartoons are to children is to imagine how important those artists that drew all those sketches that were transformed into illustrations for cartoons and sculpture toys are. As adults, If the visual story line, intrigues and animated special effects that come with most of your favorite cartoons and fantasy movies such as the Lord of The rings, Game of Thrones, Superman, X-Men, Toy Story, Star Trek continue to excite you, it shows how creative and influential the works of those artists that conjures all the characters in their drawing, illustration and animation are. To imagine how difficult and boring chatting will be on mobile phones without those emoji that help us communicate better and smarter is to imagine life without those artists that created them. If those recent trendier emoji we have on our phones today spice up our conversation, then artists have continued to add value to our daily lives. All over the world, artists are contributing massively to the GDP of their country. Here in Africa and especially in Nigeria, we also have extremely creative artists whose works are influencing the art and entertainment industry for a while. The works of these sets of guys can also be exported to the rest of the world. If Americans are selling their super heroes like Superman, Batman and X-men, we can also create Naija super heroes for the world to see. This edition is all about showcasing some of the artists who have been working hard for this to be possible. Creating illustrations and drawing conclusions – a story on some of today’s artists using traditional or new media to generate mind-blowing pieces in the art/entertainment circle.” Source: https://blarckbillboard./2016/08/04/wizkid-on-the-cover-of-mystreetz-magazines-latest-edition/

A big congrats to the Sade Crooner as his debut Album GOLD enters the Billboard world music chart. GOLD currently holds the number 7 spot on the chart. It must be noted that Adekunle is not the first Nigerian to have his song on the Billboard world chart. There’s the case of Kiss Daniel’s “New Era” and Reminisce’s “Baba Hafusa." The Billboard charts tabulate the relative weekly popularity of songs or albums in the United States and elsewhere. The results are published in Billboard magazine. Billboard biz, the online extension of the Billboard charts, provides additional weekly charts.[1] There are also Year End charts. [2] The charts may be dedicated to specific genre such as R&B, country or rock, or they may cover all genres. The charts can be ranked according to sales, streams or airplay, and for main song charts such as the Hot 100 song chart, all three pools of data are used to compiled the charts.[3] For the Billboard album chart, streams and track sales are included in addition to album sales. On the final night of Drake’s OVO Fest in Toronto, Kanye West appeared as the fourth, and final, surprise guest artist of the night, performing “Pop Style” alongside Drake and personal solo hits, including “Father Stretch My Hands” and “Runaway.” Kanye also made a special announcement: during a pause between songs, Ye asked the audience, “is y’all ready for this album?” Kanye had previously hinted at a collaborative album with Drake during an interview on The Breakfast Club in February. Around the same time, Kanye tweeted that he had new music with Drake and Future that was “gonna drop soon.” This isn’t the first time Kanye has talked about doing an album with the Six God. When Adekunle Kosoko popularly known by stage name Adekunle Gold released the Album art/Track list for his then yet-to-be released debut Album and also announced the release date of the Album come 28th of July, fans and music lovers displayed exuberance on social media platforms as their long wait for the Album had now been given a near expiration date. Loyalists of the YBNL signee who couldn’t curb their wild enthusiasm desperately sought illegal means through which they could lay hold of songs from the Album, even before the Album’s release date. There really was so much pandemonium on the internet as regards the GOLD Album. At one point I asked myself, what’s all the rave about Adekunle’s Album? Afterall this wasn’t the first time a Nigerian artist was releasing an Album nau. It later dawned on me the treatment the yet-to-be released GOLD Album was getting was as a result of the 4 stellar singles (Sade, Orente, Pick up & Ready) he had released prior to the completion of the GOLD Album. This alone heightened anticipation for the debut project. And then Adekunle stunned us by releasing his highly anticipated Album two days ahead of schedule. Fans and Music lovers could now officially immerse themselves in Adekunle’s Golden pool. The 55 minute 16-track Album titled GOLD was crafted by producers as Seyikeyz, Oscar, Pheelz, B Banks, Sleekamo and Masterkraft. And was released under the YBNL record label. Gold Intro: What better way to start the debut Album than to open with a beautiful intro that brings to light the artist’s rite of passage, his struggles and how he came about the name Adekunle Gold. The latter of which he named the Album after. My Life: Adekunle embraces his music roots on this one. Belonging to the Juju and Highlife music genre this piece has Adekunle advising critics and haters to desist from antagonising him, he further reminds them that his success is God’s making. I really enjoyed the lead-guitar and bata-drumming on this one. Beautiful Night: A love song in itself, this track brings to light a conversation between two lovers. “Its a beautiful night Let me love you baby tomorrow can wait.” Orente: Another awesome piece. Adekunle takes his time to emphasise on the need for all to Love, appreciate, and adore his woman. “Ebami Ki Orente” He appreciates her for her faithfulness and sticking with him through thick and thin. Nurse Alabere: Another ballad as its predecessors. On this beautiful piece Adekunle brings to light an experience of heartbreak. ‘Nurse Alabere’ captures that forlorn feeling of losing your heart. Friend zone: Adekunle speeds up the tempo on this one. On this track he kinda connects with the experience of every guy who’s asked a girl out and gotten nothing more than the friend zone reply. Paradise: Great jam!!! All that percussion and choral voices, truly heavenly. The song highlights the sought of intoxication and security an undying love can bring. There’s quite a similarity between Adekunle’s “Paradise” and Jon Bellion’s “Hand of God.” No Forget: The only Collaboration on this masterpiece. Adekunle recruits Simi on this one. Adekunle pleads with his lover not to forget how far they’ve come and what they’ve been through. He also takes his time to plead that she shouldn’t allow the sweet-talk of other guys sway her. Pick up: A feel good-song in itself belonging to the Pop genre. This one has Adekunle conversing with his creator. He pleads with God to pick up his call (answer his prayers) and not put him to shame. Work: As the title goes, Adekunle advises his listeners to work and shun fake life. Temptation: This track highlights a tale of the test of true friendship. The character in the song is caught in a tempting situation as his soldier friend’s hot wife invites him to taste of her goodies. But like scriptural joseph he is strong in the face of betrayal, showing an exemplary discipline that we can all connect and aspire to. Ariwo ko: Adekunle infuses Indian melody on this one. The song serves the purpose of correcting an impression that “music is not noise” . It seems to be directed at someone in the industry or generally speaking, wack artists known for crafting songs of superficial quality. Fight for You: As the name implies this song has Adekunle showing the length he would go to make his girl happy and keep her safe. Ready: Everyone yearns for love even Adekunle Gold. Arguably the best song on the Album. Who wouldn’t fall in love with this great song’s melody and beat? Definitely nobody. Regardless of your age this song is sure to get you moving. Sweet me: Another danceable song. Produced by Masterkraft this song with a high-life-feel is sure to get you rocking on the dance floor. Sade: Adekunle’s debut single. This single brought the King of Photoshop to limelight as a talented music artist. Released in 2015, the song has Adekunle covering British boy band One Direction’s “Story of my life”. He tweaks it a little by adding a Fuji-feel. A great Album if you ask me, worthy of being called a classic. The Album does set a conceptual standard. My only fear is that most Nigerian music listeners being who they are might not really appreciate this work of art, owing to their fierce affinity with Dance-hall/club songs. Ratings 8.2/10 Source: https://blarckbillboard./2016/07/31/album-review-adekunles-gold-album-truly-a-classic/

Just yesterday Outspoken rapper Kanye West took to Twitter to air his view as regards the dispute between Apple music headed by Tim Cook and Tidal headed by Jay Z. He called for a dialogue between both parties, as according to him, their dispute was causing a fragment in the music market and disrupting growth in the music industry. Speculations of Apple’s intetest in Tidal first bubbled to the surface about a month ago per a report in The Wall Street Journal. There are two reasons why Apple seeks to strike a deal with Tidal: First and foremost, it would help Apple compete against Spotify as far as overall subscribers are concerned. Two, Apple is reportedly interested in Tidal’s cozy relationship with artists. Indeed, one of the ways in which Apple has set out to differentiate Apple Music from Spotify is by relating with big name artists and releasing highly anticipated albums on Apple Music first. Tidal, naturally, has also tried to play the exclusivity game, most notably when Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo remained a Tidal exclusive for months before it showed up on rival services like Apple Music and Spotify. As another example, you won’t find Prince’s extensive library of music on Apple Music but you can enjoy it on Tidal. When one adds in varying licensing deals across the streaming music industry, the end result is a fragmented market where music lovers seemingly need to sign up for three disparate music services if they truly want enjoy the world’s full catalog of music. Below are extracts from Kanye’s Twitter handle: “This Tidal Apple beef is f**king up the music game. I need Tim Cook Jay Z Dez Jimmy Larry me and Drake Scooter on the phone or in a room this week!!! F*** all this d*** swinging contest. We all gon be dead in 100 Years. Let the kids have the music. Apple give Jay his check for Tidal now and stop trying to act like you Steve.” From the above extract Kanye insists that Apple executives Tim Cook, Jimmy Iovine and Larry Jackson shake off their pride and see the need to strike a deal with himself and Jay Z. We’re not sure how long this round of Rihanna and Drake will last, but if these two stars choose to really see where this could go, there’s a chance they could be the next Beyoncé and Jay Z . Hear us out… From the moment Bey and Jay went public as an item over 10 years ago, they’ve been the epitome of #relationshipgoals. Even Queen B’s Lemonade, which sparked speculation of infidelity in her high-profile marriage, didn’t just make this pair some serious money and become the center of pop culture news, but it also showed her relationship with Hov is now stronger than ever. And now, we’ve come back to the world where RiRi and Drizzy are a thing, and if you really take a second to compare these two famous couples, they have a lot in common. Here are eight reasons why Rihanna and Drake could be the next Bey and Jay: 1. Privacy Is Key: If you recall, Bey and Jay kept their relationship on the D-L for quite some time before making their red carpet debut as a couple, and Rihanna and Drake are doing the same thing. They hardly ever come out and say something about their relationship. They just tease us with special appearances at concerts and some paparazzi shots while out on the town. 2. They Make Musical Magic: Obviously, we know of Beyoncé and Jay Z’s collaborations (“Bonnie & Clyde,” “Crazy in Love,” “Drunk in Love,” and so many more!), and Drizzy and RiRi are right there with them. The pair have teamed up on four songs so far, and each one has become a huge hit. From “Take Care” and “What’s My Name” to “Work” and “Too Good,” this duo has proven that when they hit the studio together, magic happens. And when they appear in the correlating music videos, no one can deny their chemistry. 3. They Have Undeniable Chemistry: Speaking of, the attraction between these two cannot be ignored . Do you see the way they dance with each other or the smirks on their faces when they’re on stage during surprise concert appearances? It’s absolutely adorable (but also kind of like—ugh, get a room). You know which other pair have undeniable chemistry when they’re together? Bey and Jay. 4. They’re Both Super Successful: Rih is currently traveling the world and singing her heart out to sold-out arenas for her Anti world tour. Her latest album reached outrageous numbers and continues to blow other hits out of the water on the radio. Drake is gearing up for his Summer Sixteen tour with Future after dropping his recent album Views, which has climbed the charts to the No. 1 spot. Plus, you know you’re reaching for at least one of their lyrics when it comes to captioning your Instagram pics. If that’s not a sign of success, we don’t know what is. 5. They Have Their Own Empires: Aside from the music, each star has their own brand and empire that is on the rise. Rihanna dipped into the fashion industry with her own clothing line, as well as huge collaborations with designers like Manolo Blahnik, a perfume line and even dabbles in film and TV. Drake has his OVOXO brand, which includes fashion and pop-up shops around the country, as well as his career in acting and now, becoming a part owner of the Toronto Raptors. 6. Drake Name-Drops Rihanna in Songs: Drizzy isn’t afraid to put his girl’s name on blast in his music, and although he’s famous for talking about different women in his tracks, there’s something different about this one. In his latest track “ Hype,” you hear Drake say, “They want to be on TV right next to me/ You cannot be right here next to me/ Don’t you see RiRi right next to me?” Guess who also always hollers at his girl “B” in his rhymes? That’s right—Jay. 7. They’re Present on Each Others’ Social Media: Although these two lovebirds are notorious for keeping the details of their relationship private, they have graced each others’ social media pages . The most recent post was a bittersweet photo telling the story of a fan who passed away after losing a battle to cancer. “I had the pleasure of meeting an angel on earth! After my show in Miami, @champagnepapi introduced me to Megan! She’s inspired me so much with her strength and her perspective on life! So fearless and kind! It’s heavy news that I can’t slide in your DMs anymore like I used to!! There was always a smile waiting for me there! You brightened any day! Rest up baby girl! We will miss you!!” Rihanna wrote with a picture of the trio. 8. Just Like Jay, Drake Has to Try Hard to Win His Girl’s Heart: The back and forth between Drake and Rihanna is no secret, and Drizzy has openly said the Barbados beauty has broken his heart . But he doesn’t give up on trying to win her over, and that’s a little reminiscent of Bey and Jay’s love story, too. Jay told Vanity Fair a few years back that when he and Beyoncé were both featured on the cover of Vanity Fair’s 2001 Music Issue “we were just beginning to try to date each other.” He explained, “Well, you know, you’ve got to try first. You got to dazzle…wine and dine.” The article goes on to state that Hov “‘of course’ pursued Beyoncé, and when asked if he hadn’t been Jay Z—say, he had been a gas-station attendant and she pulled up—would he have been able to date her, he responds, ‘If I’m as cool as I am, yes. But she’s a charming Southern girl, you know, she’s not impressed…But I would have definitely had to be this cool.'” Source: https://blarckbillboard./2016/07/28/8-reasons-why-rihanna-and-drake-could-be-the-next-beyonce-and-jay-z/ |
