Rolls out terrorism containment measures
Gboyega Akinsanmi

Following the bomb blasts which took place in Apapa fortnight ago, the Lagos State Government yesterday issued a first-line order to all head teachers and principals in the state’s public schools on how to forestall terrorist attacks.

The state government rolled out the security containment measures about 24 hours after Boko Haram, claimed responsibility for the two explosions that occurred at a fuel depot in Apapa.

The state’s Head of Service, Mrs. Josephine Williams and Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Fatai Olukoga, rolled out the new measures at an interactive session with the head teachers and principals of primary and secondary schools held at the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) pavilion in Alausa.

At the interactive session, Williams expressed the state government’s grave concerns over the security of pupils and students in their schools, noting that everything should be done “to prevent security breaches in public schools.

She tasked the school managers in the state to be vigilant and security conscious, which she said, had become imperative due to the prevailing security challenges being experienced in some parts of the country.

Likewise, the special adviser said the lives of the pupils and students “are entrusted into the care of the school managers from the time they assembled in the schools in the morning till afternoon when schools close for the day.

Hence, the managers should be security conscious at all times so that the state will not experience serious security breaches as being experienced in some states.”

He, therefore, urged the school managers not “to allow any strange person or occurrences happen within their school without challenging such a person and at the same time reporting such activity to the appropriate security agency that are better trained and equipped to handle such an occurrence.

“I wish to specifically charge principals of boarding schools not to release their students to anybody who is unknown to them and the child, even the drivers except their parents. The managers of public schools should always be conscious of the next person beside you. Government is concerned about our safety, security and the general well being of every Lagos residents,” he said.

Williams, however, said the call on the managers of public schools “to be security-conscious was not informed by any imminent security breaches in the state but the need for people to be security-conscious at this particular time in the nation’s development cannot be over emphasised.

“It is imperative for everybody to learn from the experience of what is happening in other states so that such will not happen in this state. The managers of the state’s public schools should continue to inform the pupils and students to be more conscious of what happens within their surroundings.”

She, also, urged residents to desist from spreading unverified security-related text messages “to their friends, family members or neighbours as they cannot do anything about the contents of the message, but rather forward such messages to security agencies who can do something about such text messages.”

She disclosed that the state government on its part would step up on the improvement of infrastructure in our schools particularly perimeter fencing of schools in order to beef up security in the schools.

She urged the school managers to always educate their pupils and students not “to pick what does not belong to them and whenever they observe any strange item, they should report same appropriately.”
According to the head of service, the managers of public schools should also educate their staff members and even food vendors on the need for safety and security-consciousness.

Evergreeen123: You'v got joke son. Okay let me indulge you a bit.

Yorubaland is very rich in both human and natural resources. Ondo state is the fifth largest oil producing state in Nigeria; okay lets leave crude oil out of the equation for a while

The sea is also a natural resource, right? Lagos, Ondo, Ogun all have acces to the Atlantic ocean. (Yorubaland isnt like a certain landlocked region across the niger). How about having total control of the seaport in Lagos? You know the millions that goes into the FG's pocket from the import duties collected at the Lagos port every month; how about having all that into the regional account of the Yoruba western region.
You are dreaming, aren't you? When you wakeup pls let me know

Some claim he landed with the head and that made him go psycho. This explains the genes that have been transferred to his offsprings like Becomerich, Musiwa and Bkbabe.

Others like Strangerf claim he was let down from the sky with a chain. I tend to beleive this aspect as only criminals and mental patients are likely to be put in chains. This explains why Oduduwa's children always tend to dip their hand in the public till among other crimes; Tafa Balogun, Adenika Grange and Bode George being recent examples.

Yet others claim he was among Lucifer's squad that was cast down from heaven for plotting a cup against the Almighty. Little wonder they have always participated in failed coups. Ask General Diya (the weeping general) or Awo (who committed suicide cos his coup plot was exposed.

Politics › Final Battle At Confab• As Crisis Hits Northern Camp by gratiaeo(op): 5:36am On Jul 14, 2014
•Crisis hits northern camp
•N’West, N’Central may snub N’East over intervention fund

After one week of game of wit, Northern and Southern delegates are set to stage a final battle over derivation and rehabilitation funds.

The contentious derivation issue, which al most brought the Conference to its knees last week is set to further divide the house. Daily Sun gathered that delegates from core North ern states are not ready to shift their position, while their Southern counterparts are plotting to crash the creation of an intervention fund to rebuiild war-ravaged North-east.

Already, crisis has hit the Northern camp, following the refusal of North-east delegates to accommodate their counterparts from North-west and North-central geopolitical zones in the creation of the intervention fund.

A delegate from North-west, who spoke to Daily Sun on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the cracks. The delegate added that key North-west leaders might withdraw their support for North-east.

“There is a problem right now, as I speak. The Northern camp is in crisis. We have been supporting the creation of an interven tion fund. Our initial agreement was that the fund was going to be used to rebuild the entire North.

“From recent developments, it is obvious that delegates from the North-east are plot ting a different agenda. That means we are being used to achieve their personal agenda. We cannot allow that to happen. If we are not going to benefit, we should as well pull out.

“Boko Haram has attacked states in the North-west and North-central. Are they say ing these two regions will not benefit from the fund? At this point, I think the best thing to do is to pull out of the arrangement and see how North-east delegates can compel their Southern counterparts to support them,” the delegate revealed.

Series of attempts by the Conference Sec retariat to break the logjam have equally hit a cul de sac. The meeting of 50 ‘wise men’ convened by the chairman of the Confer ence, Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi last Friday, was boycotted by over half of those expected at the meeting.

As a result, the meeting did not hold. Delegates are, therefore, going to find a way to break the deadlock, which is likely to rear its ugly head when they reconvene today.

In the meantime, outhern delegates are set to challenge the recommendation of the consensus group, which came up with the creation of an intervention fund.

The delegates want the scope of the intervention fund to cover the six geopoliti cal zones of the country. They want all parts of the country to benefit from the fund in the event of any natural disaster or crisis.

If these permutations p lay out, the Confer ence might again be forced to its knees. With just four working days left to conclude discussions on the last report of the Confer ence, it is unlikely that anything meaningful will happen.

The backing of some delegates by their regional leaders and state governors might further sabotage moves by the Conference leadership to salvage the situation, which has pitted both regions against each other.

The leadership of the Conference has been under attacks. Core Northern delegates have accused the chairman, Justice Kutigi, and his deputy, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, of acting on a script intended to short-change the region.

A delegate from Borno State, Dr. Haruna Yerima, told Daily Sun that the leadership of the National Conference, particularly the chairman, and and his deputy, are working against the interest of the North.

The delegate, who is a lecturer at the Ahmedu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, cited many instances where the actions the Conference leaders had clearly indicated that they were strongly against the interest of the North.

He singled out Professor Akinyemi whom he accused of playing an agenda of other sections of the country against his region.

Dr. Yerima referred to the vote on the Conference’s committee report on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government, which Professor Akinyemi presided over.

He argued that the vice chairman delib erately did not recognise key Northern del egates, who had indicated interest to speak on the recommendations of the report. He said such moves were geared towards stifling the interest of the region.

“Two weeks ago, this local govern ment issue, I had to shout but they refused to recognise me. They shut out Professor Auwalu Yadudu, Dr. Junaid Mohammed and Buba Galadima. So, it was a grand design to stifle those that are really vocal from the North. They did not allow us to speak, even to make simple observation. Things they were allowing other delegates to do, we were prevented from doing.

“I am sorry to say this, the vice chairman, particularly, is definitely against the North. He is carrying out an agenda. His actions are really, really questionable,” he submitted.

His position has been re echoed b y another Northern delegate from Kano State, Dr. Ju naid Mohammed, who has been crying foul over plans by the Conference leadership to shut down the opinions of Northerners.

If any body feels OPC can not confront Boko Haram, then, let the person try to fight OPC and see fire. We shall use the head of such person to worship Ifa and use his heart to make aseje ogun. Who is Boko Haram to the Yorubas? They are no threat to the Yorubas in any way. They can be doing all the rubbish in far North, but, they should never think of bringing their destruction to South West. Let them keep on destroying themselves. They shall reap what they are sowing. But, I can assure those using Boko Haram to threaten Jonathan that, Jonathan will still remain in power till 2019

OPC warns Boko Haram
Barely one week after 42 suspects were arrested in Lagos and Ogun states, the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), a pan-Yoruba ethnic militia, has warned Boko Haram to steer clear of the South-West or be ready for confrontation.

It declared its readiness to combat the dreaded Islamist group should its members attack the South-West. It promised to frustrate the activities of Boko Haram in any part of the South-West, if the group moved to the region.

Coordinator of the OPC in Osun State, Dr. Rafiu Akinwale, who spoke in an exclusive interview with Daily Sun in Osogbo, said the people of the South-West should not fear that Boko Haram might move to the region.

He  said the OPC was prepared for members of the Boko Haram and had already set machinery in motion to ensure that it combats the insurgent group.

Akinwale disclosed that some youths in the six states of the South-West region had been trained by the OPC on how to tackle Boko Haram members and curtail them in the region.

He said: “We consider their threats as empty. We are prepared for the Boko Haram and we are ready to fight them to a standstill if they should enter the South-West region. We have made efforts to ensure that they are reduced to nothing.

“We are not begging them not to come to the South-West, in fact, we are urging them to come if they want to do so. They will regret their coming to this region, as we are ready to use all that we have to fight them in the South-West.”

The OPC boss added that the OPC would collaborated with all vigilance groups in the six states of the South-West to combat Boko Haram, should the group come to the South-West region, stressing that the traditional rulers in the states were giving necessary support to the association.

He called on members of the public to give necessary information on strange movements of people in their areas to the police, saying that the police had shown the readiness to support the OPC in the fight against Boko Haram.

The issue of boko haram cannot be curtailed by this OPC vocal threat.Maybe OPC members have not heard bomb blast, if they hear a big powerful explosion by a suicide bomber o! my God they will discover that life is sweet. let OPC ask police and people in the North for more details. The only thing OPC can do now is to start checking some northern fanatics and their supporters in yoruba land report them to the security agents and not beating their hairless chest
