Business / Re: How To Profit From The $700bn USA Cash Injection by Grouppoint(m): 12:52pm On Sep 25, 2008
And from the sage of Amaha who hardly gets it wrong,

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire Warren Buffett, calling turmoil in the markets an ``economic Pearl Harbor,'' said his $5 billion investment in Goldman Sachs Group Inc. is an endorsement of the Treasury's $700 billion bank rescue plan.

``I am betting on the Congress doing the right thing for the American public and passing this bill,'' Buffett said on cable channel CNBC today. ``I certainly have a vote of confidence in Goldman and vote of confidence in Congress.''

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke are pushing Congress to quickly approve the proposal to remove illiquid assets from the banking system. Buffett is buying a stake in New York-based Goldman after three of the investment bank's biggest competitors collapsed or were forced into emergency sales.

``I think the Treasury will pay back the $700 billion and make a considerable amount of money,'' Buffett said, adding that if he had $700 billion on the government's terms to buy distressed assets, he would. ``Unfortunately, I'm tapped out.''

Religion / Re: Whats Your View About Pork (meat From Pig) As A Christian by Grouppoint(m): 5:34pm On Jul 14, 2008
Ever Noticed that Christ was only recorded to have eaten Bread, Fish and Wine!

He came to set examples for us to follow. There may be hidden wisdom in there. Research has shown that peopel who avoid all meats, usually stay healthier.

@M_Nwankwo,
Suppose you were living in the days of 'an eye for an eye', or worse yet, the days of 'survival of the fittest', when every man would kill for his own survival. Do you think God was not alive then?

We are looking for a perfect God. The problem is that we are defining perfection by our understanding. That is why the jews missed the messaiah. They were looking for a regal figure, who was a man of war, that would deliver them from their earthly bondage. But instead came the son of a carpenter.
Religion / Re: But That's The Old Testament by Grouppoint(m): 5:45pm On Jul 08, 2008
Yisraelite,
I believe that you are elucidating my point. The act of sin lies in the disobedience to the word (Law) of God.

I also understand that God said 'do not murder' (rather than do not kill). I was going to expound on that. You just beat me to it.

However, it could be argued that the events at  Canaan, Jericho etc of men, women, and even children cannot be said to be anything other than murder. Which is why I try to explain that if God commands it, it is no longer a sin, for His word is above all things.

The reason why I say these things are subjective is that right now, there are people who believe that all persons who go to work, pay taxes  and obey civil govts support whatever their govts do. Hence are co-sinners with their govt, since it is with their taxes that these state crimes are comitted. If you live in the UK, US or Nigeria, you would know that your govt wages unholy, and unfair wars.

Do you accept such a label?
Religion / Re: But That's The Old Testament by Grouppoint(m): 5:07pm On Jul 08, 2008
@M_Nwankwo,
I would have loved to agree with your views, because they are idealistic. But you know it is not so.

God said Thou shall not kill. However, He also said ( in ecclestiastes 3: 3) there is a time to kill. It is not a contradiction, and I can explain this if you wish.

Your notion that evil cannot come from God suggests that there is a being equal and opposite to God.
Everything comes from God. It is in our choices and what we do with the gifts of God that determines if its a sin or evil. whenever our choices oppose the word of God, then we have sinned.

pls tell me is it a sin to eat a fruit in a garden today? Would you not agree that it is the disobeience that constitutes a sin. Just as sex in not a sin, except when done outside God's chosen order. i.e. The order of marriage.

Everything has its source from God, whether good or evil. And it is subjective. Subject to the when , where and the intent. The Why
That is why Christ preached more about the intent in the pharisees heart, rather than their actions.

Are you surprised that I said Christ did not preach much against slavery? If you know that he did, pls show me. There is no need to cover the issue with Love. If that were the case, then Christ should not have preached specifically about all the issues of the day including sowing and reaping, blessing, healing.
Religion / Re: But That's The Old Testament by Grouppoint(m): 4:00pm On Jul 08, 2008
@M_nwankwo,
Pls understand that sin and evil are very subjective.

Sin simply means 'disobedience to the word of God'.
The actual nature of the act is not what makes it a sin. The intent is what determines whether its a sin or evil.

Case in point: Is it really a sin to eat a fruit in the garden of eden?

, What is seen as sin now may no longer be seen as a sin  tomorrow.

Another case in point: In the 1920s it was illegal to sell or drink spirits in the US. then the church saw it as  a sin.  Now it is legal, it is no longer seen as a sin.
In biblical times, you would observe that people freely bought, sold, and kept slaves. Christ never really preached against it. In fact, Apostle Paul encouraged slaves to be loyal and obedient. Today, we see slavery as a sin.

@Obalende,
Very good explanation you proferred. However, I pray that Huxley is willing to see with a spiritual eye.

@Huxley.
The old testament is a shadow of the New testament, and a shadow of things to come. You will need to understand that the killings in Jericho etc represents God's judgement to come.

So for those who believe that there is no hell fire or that God is too kind to allow billions of unbelievers in China to go to hell. Pls look at the story of Noah's Ark, Jericho, etc. God did it before and he will not strive with man forever. He has now given examples from the past. He will do it again!!!. Pls better safe than sorry.

So rather than analyse whether God is good or not, first accept that He is at least good enough to have warned us.
Religion / Re: Clarify This Biblical Statement by Grouppoint(m): 1:11pm On Jul 08, 2008
Olabowale, regarding your question. I will answer without any fancy footwork.

The sons of God are the angels. In the case, the fallen angels.

However, if you want fancy footwork, we can go into the original texts, to prove that the term used as 'sons of God' is different from the term which refers to Christ.
Religion / Re: Clarify This Biblical Statement by Grouppoint(m): 1:08pm On Jul 08, 2008
The LORD said to my Lord,
This was David (seeing as a prophet) showing that there is the LORD God and the Lord Jesus.

Jesus proved once and for all with this that he was around even before david, and David saw him in the spirit.

Olabowale, this scripture should have convinced of of the divine pre-incarnate existence of Christ.

The recent report by the Family lawyers which claimed that MKO died bankrupt. The same report state sthat MKO hoped to regain his wealth by assuming the position of commander in Chief.
This insinuation leads one to imagine why more than one persons may have wanted him dead.

Thanks all. We actually have access to substantial funding.
We want to establish a sustainable mill using the local rice farms and products without being involved in the cultivation itself.

Christians fined in Algeria case
source : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7433869.stm

Four Algerian Christians have been given suspended jail terms and fines for trying to convert Muslims.

The case provoked accusations in the West of religious repression in the largely Muslim country of 33 million, a charge the government denies.

But Christian groups point to the ordered closures of some churches.

The state-appointed Higher Islamic Council said Protestant evangelicals are secretly trying to divide Algerians to colonise the country.

There are an estimated 10,000 Christians in Algeria.

A 2006 law forbids non-Muslims from trying to convert Muslims and limits religious worship to specific buildings approved by the state - a clause that has been used to close more than a dozen churches in the past six months.

Several mosques have also been closed under the same provision.

The four men were given suspended sentences ranging from two to six months and fined between $1,575 and $3,150. Two other people were acquitted.

What is involved in setting up a rice mill?

In the face of global food shortage, we need to look inwards and develop what we have on ground.

What are the stages and steps involved?

What are the likely costs?

Thanks for your ideas.

Religion / Re: Should Christians Practise Yoga by Grouppoint(m): 11:05am On May 20, 2008
Very good post AIO. You make a lot of sense, when you are not being sarcastic.
I have not yet stated that Yoga is bad. I have asked because 'I've heard it said'. Hence I have come to seek knowledge.

Your points have so far been valid. But isnt there a boundary or border to these things? If you are saying that onomatopoeic yoga is safe, it means that you concur that the yoga brands that chant meaningful words are not.
Again, even though the meaningless chants are meaningless to the practitioner, they may really bear a spiritual connotation, who knows?

The word "yoga" means "union," and the goal is to unite one's transitory (temporary) self with the infinite Brahman, the Hindu concept of "God." If christian hold that the only way to achieve this is through Christ, then you can clearly see a potential conflict.

The question should then have been, is it possible for a Christian to isolate the physical aspects of yoga as simply a method of exercise, without incorporating the spirituality or philosophy behind it?

Yoga originated with a teaching one to focus on oneself instead of focussing on the one true God. I personally have issues with that.
Religion / Re: Should Christians Practise Yoga by Grouppoint(m): 3:43pm On May 19, 2008
@AIO,
Your sarcasm is noted. If you have never heard of yoga or the chanting involved, then good for you.

If you have, then you may simply state your personal views like; 'no, I don't think practicising Yoga is bad for Christians'.

Perhaps you may not even be a christian, again, good for you.

Either way, off with your snide remarks.
Religion / Re: Should Christians Practise Yoga by Grouppoint(m): 3:31pm On May 19, 2008
I've heard it said that the practice of Yoga venerates these gods, and one may unknowingly be signing up for some bondage or the other.

What do you all think. It certanly has its benefits, but so does smoking hemp, and even cocaine.
Religion / Should Christians Practise Yoga by Grouppoint(m): 3:24pm On May 19, 2008
Should Christians practise Yoga, and other eastern excercises, since they stem from religious rituals to their gods.
Religion / Re: How Much Of Our African Culture Should We Give Up For Christianity? by Grouppoint(m): 4:21pm On May 14, 2008
@lucrabasi,
On the contrary, many Christians are actually clueless as to when the line is being crossed.

During a traditional marriage or many grand ocassions, Kola is broken. Do you know what prayers are said to the gods during the breaking of kola? eg 'He who brings kola, brings life'. May the spirits protect all and sundry. etc

After some of such covenants to th egods, audience all clap hands. Not realising that one may have just signed up to a few years odf bondage.
Religion / Re: How Much Of Our African Culture Should We Give Up For Christianity? by Grouppoint(m): 10:11am On May 14, 2008
What about pouring our libation to our ancestors in a ceremony?

or breaking of kola nuts to the spirits at meetings and weddings? Most ibo traditional weddings perform this ritual.
Religion / Re: How Much Of Our African Culture Should We Give Up For Christianity? by Grouppoint(m): 4:57pm On May 13, 2008
I suppose my question is founded upon an observation that many Africans still hold on to certain superstitions like, dont cross your feet over another person's body, , and several other superstitions that I'm sure you can all recollect a few.

We still believe certain things bring bad luck and some things bring good luck.
Religion / Re: How Much Of Our African Culture Should We Give Up For Christianity? by Grouppoint(m): 4:56pm On May 13, 2008
Yes, people curtsy the queen and other royalty. That does not make it right either.

People genuflect for the pope. still not necessarily right.

When does respect become reverence?

For example is it still ok to prostrate to greet parents and elders, if Christianity says that God alone should be given such deference.

Clearly, some of our traditions have pagan origins and as such should be eschewed. What about the aspects of our culture that seem right, but yet have pagan origin?

@poster,
Dont you just wish you had kept your feelings to yourself?

Nairaland religion forum is filled with matured christians, some of whom may possibly be more versed in scripture than the big pastors out there.

However, I think I know what you were trying to share, cool , so be blessed and listen to your pastors, however, remember that the Spirit behind the word (Rhema) is far more important food than the delievery style of the vessel conveying the message.
