In many developed federal countries, policing is not controlled entirely by one central police force. Security responsibilities are shared among federal, state or provincial, and local police agencies. That is the practice in countries such as the United States and Canada. I am therefore surprised that, in 2026, people are still asking about the benefits of state policing in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Police Force should be restructured. The federal police could focus on national and cross-border crimes, terrorism, organized crime, intelligence, and offences involving multiple states, much like the FBI in the United States and the federal role of the RCMP in Canada. At the same time, every state should have its own police service, accountable to the governor and the State House of Assembly. Major cities could also establish local police services where necessary.

I could list many benefits, but I will mention only two.

1. **It would make governors accountable for security**

At present, governors are described as the chief security officers of their states, yet they do not directly control the police. This makes it easy for them to blame Abuja whenever insecurity gets out of control.

With state policing, the responsibility would be clear. If kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, or other crimes are allowed to overwhelm a state, citizens can hold the governor and state government accountable during elections. If people are being kidnapped in Lagos, for example, it is easier for residents to demand answers at Alausa than to keep looking towards Abuja.

Our governors have enjoyed too much authority with too little responsibility. State policing would force them to take security seriously and give citizens a clear institution to hold accountable.

2. **Crime-fighting would become localized**
The Governors should not be given power to control the police as they will use it against their political opponents.
If there will be a state police,it should be made entirely independent and properly funded so that it cannot be manipulated by political actors.

How does it make sense to send someone who grew up and spent most of his life in Katsina to Lagos as Commissioner of Police, when he may know little about the local terrain, communities, languages, criminal networks, and hideouts?

Effective policing depends heavily on local knowledge and community relationships. Police officers who understand the area are more likely to know the streets, recognize suspicious activity, develop reliable informants, and build trust with residents. Criminals should not understand the environment better than the officers assigned to catch them.

Of course, proper safeguards must be introduced to prevent governors from misusing state police against political opponents. But the possibility of abuse is not a reason to reject state policing. It is a reason to create strong laws, independent oversight, transparent recruitment, legislative supervision, and clear limits on political interference.

Nigeria has so many ethnic groups who shout "one Nigeria" openly yet are adversarial and desperate to protect their people and interest.

Meaning State police will work far better and more efficiently staffed by indigenes of the state patriotically devoted to protecting their land rather than those who, for example, and as obtained under Malami, will abet the crimes of their kinsmen in the land of others.

Amotekun has proven this. If Amotekun can be so successful and globally successful, with peashooter guns, think what the Yorubas can do with State police.

The answer to your question is that State Police is a chance for progressive States and people to develop police forces that will be as efficient, patriotic, professional and modern as possible, moving towards best global practice, without the issue of ethnic sentiments sabotaging crime fighting which is a problem with the NPF.

You seem not to understand Nigerian politics. The Muslim north wants to dominate security agencies in Nigeria, support tactically the enshrinement of shari'a. All our bushes are filled with fulanis jihadists.
With community policing, directives needn't come from Abuja to disarm herders. It is easy to identify strange faces by native police officers than a birom policeman in Ogoja identying a stranger or strange movements. It is easier to gather intelligent reports and so on.
It has its demerits also. You cannot trust politicians with too much freedom. I think the same thing was practised before in Nigeria.

The problem is, I personally think almost anything is better than NPF. One advantage is that each state will now be almost totally responsible for their security. If they spend money to have a good police department they'll be more secure than those who refuse to or can't.
It will no longer be one-size-fits-all.
The huge downside is that inevitably the state police will become private property of the governor and I don't see how that can be avoided in a place like Nigeria. In US the state and local police departments are truly independent. Thst won't happen in Nigeria

We're just copying US as we did with presidential system of govt. But just because it works in US doesn't mean it will work. Just as we created a waay too powerful presidency because we copied US without having any of the elements that keep a US president in check. Same way, state police won't work well in Nigeria because the people are too corrupt. BUT I think it is still better because NPF is totally rotten!
