TravelNigerians To Be Deported From UK For Earning Less Than £35K by GurlFriend(op): 12:33pm On Mar 14, 2016
Nigerians, from next month, non-EU migrants in the UK earning less than £35,000 will be deported.

The new Home Office policy, which comes into force on April 6, applies to all overseas workers who have been in the UK for five years on a Tier 2 visa.

If they can’t prove that they’re earning more than £35,000, they will be denied settlement and will face deportation.

Teachers, IT professionals and journalists could all be badly affected.

A petition launched at the beginning of the year called for the threshold to be reconsidered – it gathered more than 100,000 signatures and was debated in parliament last week.

So what’s actually changing?

To settle in the UK as a skilled worker, non-EU migrants need to have a Tier 2 visa. For this you need:

An offer for a job in the UK that pays at least £20,800
Have had at least £945 in your bank account for 90 days
A certificate of sponsorship from your employer (which can cost between £536 and £1,476)
To pay a £200 annual healthcare surcharge
To prove your English language proficiency

After five years on this visa, skilled workers are able to apply for ‘indefinite leave to remain’ – and this is what is about to change.

From April, anyone applying for indefinite leave to remain will need to earn at least £35,000.

Nurses are temporarily exempt from this threshold, along with PhD-level jobs and any professions that have been on the official ‘shortage occupation list’ while the person has been living here.

However, the earnings threshold could be applied to migrant nurses in the future.

Teachers aren’t exempt (unless they are professors in certain disciplines). Even David Cameron’s mum has lost her job because of Tory cuts

In fact, the Home Office’s own analysis of the policy in 2012 revealed that the new threshold would have a significant impact on teachers, IT professionals and marketing managers.

What if I’ve been in the UK for more than five years?
Then you won’t be deported – the new rule doesn’t apply to anyone who entered the country on a Tier 2 visa on or before April 5 2011.

I’ve been here for a decade, will I be deported?
No – as long as you’ve been living here for 10 continuous years, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain with no salary threshold.

So if you came here in 2006 as a student visa, then moved directly onto a skilled workers’ visa, you can apply to settle here regardless of how much you earn.

The only condition is that you can’t have left the UK for more than 180 days at a time, or 540 days in total.

I’m here on a marriage visa, will I have to leave?

No, the changes only apply to people on a Tier 2 visa.

I initially didn't want to believe this so I called someone i know in OAU and she confirmed it.

According to my source, the thief was supposed to be subjected to 'maximum shishsi' but maybe because it is a girl involved she escaped the humiliation. Maximum shishi in Obafemi Awolowo University is when a thief is caught, beaten and paraded round the hostels. Boys are stripped to their boxers while girls are paraded with their loot.

The girl involved was however fortunate to escape the public shaming because someone had pity on her .

Another student who is a victim of the girl's thievery confirmed the event, and posted pictures of more items stolen by this 'legendary' female thief.

cont.

‘I later noticed that the rooftop of my cab was painted orange, which meant Painted Abuja taxi (PHC) while others blue, and some green with white stripes connoting their various companies,’ she revealed, adding that where she registered as a taxi driver, she was asked by several people whether she was actually going to drive it herself.

‘They were nice to me and I even got a pass twice and didn’t have to pay for the monthly sticker. All I had to do was show the note from their chairman and the boys on the road let me go,’ Asakpe said. She understood it was their way of encouraging her.

So far the experience has been interesting for Asakpe. Every day she gets to meet new people. Virtually everyone that enters her cab wants to engage her in a discussion. How did you come about this job? Why are you doing this job? And she enjoys responding to these questions because how she started-off is a story to tell.

But amidst the excitement sometimes comes challenges, particularly when her car sits at the mechanic’s and there’s no way she can work and it continues to gulp money for a couple of days.
Again, while most of the people around her are supportive, some discourage Asakpe. ‘I will get you a job,’ and ‘you shouldn’t be doing this’. But Asakpe only smiles.

Asakpe is presently studying to be a chartered accountant and plans to get more cars and empower women interested in the business.

‘There’s a lady already who is interested and keeps asking me to get a car for her,’ she intimated. So Asakpe wants to run a transport company that is strictly female in the future. She has realised that there’s no job that’s strictly for men, after all, there are men who own restaurants, cook, and make women’s hair.

‘Funny enough, men are supportive and are my biggest fans,’ she said, adding that she discovered it’s untrue that men don’t like independent women as some women claim. ‘I get more suitors now than i got when i was a hotel manager.’

Asakpe’s typical day as a hotel manager involved resuming work at 7:30 in the morning, particularly when she was studying for a particular examination. ‘Those days i have to work for 24 hours, which it means i work from that time of the morning to 12 midnight and then i sleep there in the premises and resume the next day at same time,’ she said.

Now her work schedule has changed and is more flexible. She drives out at 7:30 am and scouts around for workers, ‘because that’s the peak period, till 10am or 11am.’

When Asakpe started, she parks her car and sleeps off at noon, but soon discovered she could still make more money after a single experience. Overtime she has made friends with some of her customers and takes a break at their place of work. Ideally, her closing time is 5pm, but when some of her major customers are in town, she works late.

‘I had a customer recently and worked till 9pm,’ she revealed, adding that most times such jobs require her to drive them to a meeting and park while they are inside. So in this case she charges by the hour. Most times because they are her customers it fluctuates between N1,000 and N1,500. She thinks this is fair because she waits and her fuel is not used-up. And staying in a meeting for five hours by any customer automatically earns her N5000.

So Asakpe makes about N100, 000 in a month, with 80, 000 being her profit. A graduate of Accounting from the University of Nigeria, Enugu, she keeps her records clean and knows what she earns on a daily basis.

CareerAccountant Susan Asakpa Who Drives A Cab In Abuja Tells Her Touching Story by GurlFriend(op): 7:16am On Mar 09, 2016
Susan Aghogho Asakpa went viral yesterday after her girlfriend shared her pictures on Facebook to celebrate the International Women's Day and revealed she was a graduate accountant turned female cab driver in Abuja.

www.nairaland.com/attachments/3474854_3_png10fb15c77258a991b0028080a64fb42d

Here's how this lady wonder got to where she is today:

It all started when Suzan Asakpa’s employer revealed the plan to slash her monthly salary from N80, 000 to N70, 000. ‘That was my wake-up call,’ she narrated, after all she was already getting bored with the job.

She had worked for three years as a manager in a hotel in Abuja and felt she deserved an upgrade. But it wasn’t coming. To make this worse, came that revelation of a salary slash. At that moment Asakpe decided she needed to be her own boss and prayed for a business idea.

When she got on the phone to her father in Lagos, they talked about what she wanted to do. He was
excited when he learnt she wanted to drive a cab herself. It was not long before he gave her a call from Cotonou and asked her whether she would prefer a manual or automatic. He had actually taken a loan for that.

When the car was sent to Abuja, it was already serviced and everything had cost N720, 000. ‘But I am going to pay him back,’ Asakpe revealed, adding that she had already got N500, 000 so far.
So by October, 2015, Asakpe was already in business, but not before some preliminaries.

Before the vehicle was sent to Abuja, she had asked around and knew what she needed to do. So when the time came she took it for a paint job. Initially, she had not wanted to paint it in the traditional taxi colours, but was advised by a taxi driver to do so because it’s the law. Asakpe had complained to him that painted taxis were not allowed to enter some places, but he insisted that at least they still get access into most.

Celebrities#FaultyTransformer: Femi Kuti Blasted By Neighbour On Twitter by GurlFriend(op): 11:02am On Mar 04, 2016
Afro beat singer Femi Anikulapo-Kuti had a run in with a supposed neighbour when the fellow came on twitter to roast the musician for having the temerity to remove his wire from their faulty transformer. According to the man, Femi should have followed in his father Fela's footsteps by fighting for a new transformer.

The street where Femi Kuti resides has been having issues with their transformer for a long time and nothing has been done about it. Eventually tired of the constant blackouts, Femi 'ported' to the functioning transformer in the next street.

This did not go down well with his neighbours who felt that since he was a 'freedom fighter', Femi should have stayed to fight for them as well as suffer the darkness with them.

One of his neighbours took to twitter to drag the popular musician, but Femi wouldn't have it and they ended up exchanging hot words.

Read the hilarious exchange below.

Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the Head Pastor of the House of the Rock Church, was seen yesterday morning controlling traffic in Lagos Island. If you live in Lagos you will understand the nature of the traffic on the Island. There was commotion that prevented cars from moving courtesy of impatience.

The pastor alighted from his car when the heavy traffic prevented the easy movement of vehicles and decided to do the job of the traffic warden. After some few minutes, the traffic situation eased courtesy of the man conducting and directing the flow.

Crime"Why We Can't Expel Cadets Who Tortured Civilian"-NDA Commandant by GurlFriend(op): 5:23pm On Feb 27, 2016
The Nigeria Defence Academy, NDA, on Thursday explained why it could not expel some cadets captured on video torturing a civilian for no just reason.

Nigerians cried out in condemnation of the cadets led by a female, who were shown in a video clip, which went viral last month, dehumanizing a young man later identified as Amari Sunday, a staff of Abuja Park “N” Pay, for allegedly commending the beauty of one of the female cadets. Sunday later, in an interview with channels television, said the real reason why he was tortured was because he wasn't fast enough when one of the unruly cadets had demanded his attention.

While majority of Nigerians called for the expulsion of the cadets, the Commandant of the elite Nigerian military training institution, Major General Mohammed Ibrahim, said they could not be expelled because the time to prosecute them had lapsed.

According to the NDA Commandant, the time frame for expelling any cadet for wrongdoing must not exceed six months from the date the alleged offence was committed.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of 466 officer cadets of the 67th Regular Course, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim noted that the incident in question took place two years ago when the cadets were first termers and had just been in the academy for only three months.

While noting that appropriate disciplinary action had already been taken on the cadets, he urged the newly matriculated ones to consider themselves lucky to have successfully passed the one month intensive military training.

Christianity EtcSupreme Court Upholds Rev King's Death Sentence by GurlFriend(op): 1:00pm On Feb 26, 2016
It is the end of the road for the bearded General Overseer of Christian Praying Assembly (CPA), Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, aka Rev King, as the Supreme Court has upheld his death sentence.

Rev. King was sentenced to death by hanging in 2007 by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Ikeja High Court, on a 5-count charge of murder. He set fire on seven members of his church whom he accused of fornication.

One of them, Ann King, died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.

During the trial, witnesses, who were mostly his church members, narrated how Reverend King turned them to intimacy gadgets. The principal witness in the matter, Kelechi King, in her gory account told the court how she had aborted four pregnancies for the self-acclaimed ‘god’.

She also revealed how Reverend King made her denounce her family and how she served him as his maid, attending to him naked.

On the incident that led to the death of Ann, almost all the prosecution witnesses corroborated the fact that Rev. King actually set them on fire by pouring fuel on them.

They also told the court that on the said date, Rev. King gathered them together in his house following allegations that they were committing fornication in his house, an allegation they all denied.

BusinessGreedy Nigerians Cashing In On The Rising Dollar Exchange Rate by GurlFriend(op): 9:18am On Feb 23, 2016
A blog reader sent us this mail and picture

I was in Enugu and went to Ogbete market to buy red oil and discovered the price skyrocketed. Usually, I buy 10 liters of red oil #2,800 but it went up to #3,500.

When I asked the elderly woman why the price went up, she said, "nwa m, okwa asi na dollar tinyere ego" (My son, they said that dollar has appreciated).

And I was like, "mama kedu nke gbasara dollar na mmanu igbo, (But Mama, What has dollar got to do with igbo palm oil) that u get from ur village" and she replied, "ihe nine tinyere ego na Enugu, asi na dollar adiro" (Every thing is now expensive because of dollar)
.
Thats the ugly situation of our economy today. Our economy is regulated largely by external and foreign forces.

We always blame the leadership but it is us (Me and You) who actually messes this nation up. How does dollar affect palm oil which this woman harvested at home and processed and then brought to the market.

I also visited a friend's fish farm and he was telling his workers that he will increase the price of fish per kilo, I asked why and he complained of dollar increase. This is a man who gets fish feed from a nearby brewery.

Even my landlord has informed us that our house rent has increased because of the dollar. Yet we all blame Buhari when its is us who is messing up the economy.

The greatest saying of all times for me is from Nelson Mandela who stated that Poverty is Man Made. Why are we always opportunistic and willing to prey on each other. we capitalize on the disadvantages of another to enrich ourselves. this horrible.

The climax came when my wife came home from church last sunday and informed me that Ukochukwu (Pastor) said that people show now be sowing seed in foreign currency so that God will reward them in foreign currency. that those who give god Naira will be blessed in Naira but if you give God Dollars, Then you must reap in Dollars.

Brethren, Where do we go from here?

PoliticsFreeze To Onyeka Onwenu: Face Your Issue, You Were Not Sacked For Being Igbo!” by GurlFriend(op): 12:56pm On Feb 19, 2016
Before we go on, I want to find it interesting that Onyeka Onwenu somehow always seems to have 'vested interests' in almost every dispensation in the country. I vividly recall she was a very vocal participant in the infamous 'Abacha One Million Man March' of 97/98. This infamous One Million March was a campaign that supported Abacha's drive for self-succession into civilian rulership.

Anywhere there is pie, there's Onyeka. My opinion, though

https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Freeze.png?712c0b

Cool FM On-Air Personality, OAP, Freeze has advised Onyeka Onwenu to stop inciting inter-ethnic disaffection with her recent claims.

Onwenu, renowned singer and actress, had in a statement released yesterday in reaction to her sack from a federal appointment, insinuated that it was as a result of her tribal background.

Onwenu had said, “I was abused, targeted and maltreated for being an Igbo woman."

Freeze reacted to this on his Instagram page @daddyfreeze by requesting the musician-cum-politician to stop creating unnecessary tension in an already volatile situation, as such utterance will not help matters.

Freeze said, “Dear Madam, those statements like “Buhari sacked me because I am Igbo” would only serve to fuel more hatred and animosity.

“You were not sacked because you are Igbo, stop creating unnecessary tension in an already volatile situation you are not helping matters.

“If Nigeria goes to war, poor, innocent and helpless people would suffer. Syria has a population of 25 million people, far less than LAGOS state alone yet the world can’t handle its refuge crisis. I shudder to imagine our own.

“Sit at home and face your issue without dragging an innocent nation into your personal battle.

“How long did you really expect to eat under 2 different regimes and what really did you have to offer? – just a thought.

“Sorry about the typos guys I’m really not happy about this,” the radio personality concluded
