Politics › Re: Lagos State Governorship Aspirant, Special Adviser Arraigned For Murder by GuyFawkes: 10:05am On Nov 12, 2014 |
barcanista: There is something I don't like here. 1. Why should the Attorney General not oppose the bail application?
2. Is murder now a bailable offence?
3. The Justice system of Lagos State should not pamper any sacred cow. This is disturbing and unacceptable.
Justice must be served!!! Gun possesion doesn't mean they are guilty of murder unless its proven in court. I think the governorship aspirant was just taken out of the equation for 2015,not that he stood a chance anyway but Kasali is very popular amongst the Ibeju-lekki, Epe axis. |

EnlightenedSoul: Well, I can def see both sides of it, but one's not complete w/o the other. Trust me, it seemed like every one in my family was having their own personal fit/mini seizure when they heard about it I wouldn't elope. My parents rarely agree with my taste, but I work on them lol. They've only ever liked one of my suitors( ... weird word). Just one. And I thought I was picky. Parents rarely agree with choices of their daughters unless the guys from a family they are familiar with. Better work more on your tastes or they'll fail your parents vetting process . But seems you've settled on one for now. Best wishes |

ArtanK: This type of slavery is facilitated by the Ethiopian government. Thousands of Ethiopian men and women leave for the gulf countries every month. It's sad really but I'm not surprised. Should the Ethiopian government deny the people the right to seek greener pastures elsewhere? Its so sad when you read about the injustice and indignity they suffer in Israel as well. The horrors they experience in the Sinai desert alone are gut-wrenching. How about the global powers calling out the gulf countries about this form of modern day slavery? But yet again Africa remains what it is, and millions are desperately trying to flee for better lives albeit living in bondage. |

EnlightenedSoul: Wow, judge-yness hiding behind a sea of emoticons much?
Who proposes at 18? That's just wayyy too young and immature. Characterized by the fact that we didn't even discuss any element of marriage prior to when he quite literally 'popped' the question. It was too much pressure. If he would've stayed, there wouldn't have been a rush to propose, and things would've moved on naturally. But how can you stay in a LDR with someone whom, in their mind, you'd just rejected? So...it's true what they say. Timing is everything Plus, my parents would've killed me for entering an engagement at 18, and they sure as hell didn't like the guy either.
In essence, it's a good thing I 'teleported'. We're both better off for it. Don't mind me I'm just pulling your legs Frankly speaking you did the right thing, heck if it was my younger sister I'd have a fit if her Bf proposed to her at 18. Way too much pressure esp when you've never discussed it. Your parents not liking the guy was a factor you just shouldn't ignore, not unless the girl wanted to elope. |

EnlightenedSoul: I'm not sure that's even true tbh, but I just wasn't ready for it at all. We dated in HS, and he gained an out-of-state scholarship just as I had, so I figured a breakup was imminent since we were both being pulled in vastly different directions. Apparently, he was thinking the opposite. In the end, he ended up going, and I ended up staying put for simple fact that I couldn't convince my parents to let me go. Pathetic I had to deal with all that weirdness and more, but that's life.
Lol. There's always a reason. Whatever her reason for declining, she's entitled to it. Poor guy dude was trying to keep the relationship alive and even take it to the next level, and you had to break his heart by saying NO whilst 'teleporting' yourself Mean Miss-E mean Even if he wasn't going outta state you'd have still said NO Its all good anyway, you were very young and that was quite a shock . |

Krystalxxx: Yeah this is a nice topic,a lot of these things are true cuz I grew up with a lot of Disney and I discovered real life wasn't like that at all. ..in fact I had to tear myself away from cartoons all so I could get to reality.@ O.P have u noticed that most grown up Nigerians hate cartoons, especially the guys, they don't want to see it at all, except for the manga lovers. And by the way dyou know the real story of mulan, why it was considered such a terrible parody? I'd like to know Not all Nigerian guys hate cartoons although mangas have been trending in recent years. Growing up in the 90's we were mostly into Disney cartoons, but at the turn of the millenium Pixar and Dreamworks have overshadowed Disney, so much so they had to buy Pixar. Still miss those disney days but I hardly watch any of them now. I read the Mulan story was way different from the cartoon and it had a sort of tragic ending, that's why they are cartoons anyway didn't expect them to make kids cry their eyes out. You can look it up on the internet its a poem called Ballad of Mulan. |

I suspect this girl is the same. It would scare any young girl who has major plans lined up for the future. At that age its safe to say those plans would have being jettisoned if you'd said yes. LOL at being the same girl. |

Must have been quite a sight, a guy proposing to 18 year old Miss-E so you basically teleported yourself. |

Its we Nigerians and Ghanaians who tend to stick to our own... A Sierra Leone wont marry someone outside his village let alone from another country Maybe as a result of assimilation. But its not most french speaking Sene-Gambians and the Fula west africans also stick to their people. I'm a fan of sticking to ours as well but if you find love in with another race no wahala. |

SirShymex: Lmao @ Oyo folks. You just need to see the Alaafin's face to know what time it is - imperial tribal marks of the great Oyo empire. Legendary folks!(Off topic: I'm still trying to find the source of Oyo's imperial cavalry but it seems everything points to the Bariba).
The tattoos look cool, but not as artistic as the modern ones. From the books I've come across also it all points to the Baribas and the Nupes to a lesser extent, but we don't know where they got the horses from. Some scholars dispute it came from the Baribas and Nupes stating;they as well as Oyos and the Hausalands under the Fulanis must have had a primary source. Oyo most likely learnt the art of the calvary from the Baribas were they spent many years in exile after the Nupes sacked Oyo-ile. The Baribas were excellent horsemen no doubt even till this day. The Hausa slaves were mostly tasked with manning the stables and taking care of the horses of the Oyo army. |

SirShymex: Loool, now I see why the Oyo tribal mark is the most elaborate one. It looks like a double whammy of attacks by a tiger and a lion at the same time - two wild cats lol. I think that was what inspired the "2catwoman" handle - jk jk jk.
Yes, you can't really call it a culture since it was basically something for identification, due to event/circumstance. And now that it is not there anymore, the practice needs to be abolished. I know some naija uncle in Peckham back in the day who had the proper elaborate one (he was quite popular back then, his face made him famous lol) - hysterical.
Also, I know they also used tattoos as well. My nan has tattoos of her name and her parent's on her body. She is Egba. I'd say that was what inspired me to get tattoos as well.
Yoruba history is very interesting - great people, and great culture. Those Oyo and Ogbomosho marks are serious mehn...tiger claws print . Its almost extinct now anywway, but you can bet some village folks wouldn't let it for quite sometime yet. Most of those yoruba old women have those tatoos were they write all sorts of stuff, some you can make out what's written and some you can't, looks cool tho. |

The MIL would get her face slashed and she will have to find a way to get rid of the tiger claws on the kid's face. If at all anyone is still on the tribal marks thing, it should be on the back or somewhere on the legs.
@Guyfawkes
Before the kiriji wars, was the tribal mark thing part of Yoruba culture? Its not a culture thing per se,initially tribal marks were restricted to the Alaafin's family in Oyo.It became widespread all over the various yoruba sub-groups when wars were ravaging the land and slavery was at its peak, people needed a way to identify folks from either their family or town who might be sold into slavery and they happened to meet in some place far away. Folks were just being hauled away to be sold into slavery during the Kiriji wars . Folks in town would even tell anyone who was being taken away not to struggle and bade them farewell . |
