TV/Movies / Re: Boston Legal by gwatala(m): 3:07pm On May 07, 2009 |
Boston Legal ends at Season 5, but it seems that our Nigerian pirates haven't laid their hands on the DVD yet. When they do, we'll surely find them here in Nigeria. Boston Legal of course is the best legal drama in recent times on TV. And I am not a student of Law. |

Literature / Re: Best African Author: Wole Soyinka or Chinua Achebe? by gwatala(m): 7:51pm On Sep 18, 2008 |
This post is useless anyway. Chinuea Achebe is a brilliant Novelist, Essayist, Lecturer and Story Teller. Wole Soyinka is primarily a dramatist/poet and essayist. Why compare them? And where do you put Ben Okri, Niyi Osundare, Chimamanda, Sefi Atta etc. Anyway, for those who thinks Soyinka might be too difficult, too bad. Perhaps he wasn't writing for you. Below is a link to a recent comment by Gerd Meuer on the relationship between the two writers, a comment on their creativity or something like it. And Gerd should necessarily know. He has known them both since about 1962. http://igwatala.instablogs.com/entry/on-achebe-soyinka-and-gerd-meuer/ Regards all. |

They married: " On April 4, 2008, Knowles and Jay-Z were married in New York City. Although official confirmation has yet to come from either individual's camp, it became a matter of public record on April 22, 2008.[99] " (Source Wikipedia) |

Have people here thought about how good it would be to play this game when/if the Naira eventually gets re-denominated? It means that whoever wins One million Naira would have won a hundred million dollars! Don't scream. When the Euro was introduced in Europe, the programme retained the million mark as its highest prize. I doubt if MTN would stick with that though if it happens. A million dollars is a lot of money |
Sports / Re: Coach Yemi Tella Is Dead!!! by gwatala(m): 7:01pm On Oct 20, 2007 |
toshmann: What I am actually is sad about our condition AS A PEOPLE, and the attitudes, and conditions of our living. Blaming however will not solve anything. It only creates another hazard for people with weak hearts (Ask Sandana, sorry, I forgot that late Rep's name). Lucky Dube would probably have sworn he lived in a better country than Nigeria if he was asked just two days ago! Many of this upcoming generation of Nigerians will not live to the age of Yemi Tella not just because of our health system but because of our habits, and exposure and a myriad of other factors. Not even if we export them all to live in Europe or America. AIDS is there, so is witchcraft (?), Cancer, gun shots etc. Hope is not in any "government" though I agree the people in charge are often responsible for what we get. If we desire better healthcare for ourselves however, and we insist on it, it will eventually rub off on the so called government. Let's enjoy life wherever we are, Europe or Iceland with the best health practices. It will end someday but we can make it worthwhile. However AS A PEOPLE, I hope that we will one day finally evolve a better standard of living where citizens would be able to afford very good healthcare - coach or otherwise, so that Cancer and HIV and other disease carriers will live longer. Hopefully one day, diseases would be no more. Me, I leave (the computer) now. May Tella RIP. He's probably happier now anyway! |
Sports / Re: Coach Yemi Tella Is Dead!!! by gwatala(m): 5:58pm On Oct 20, 2007 |
toshmann: OK. Well said. So why use NOW to rehash the old arguement for good health system. A life well lived(?) is ended. That is the issue. If we as a people have failed to evolve a society that respects human life, whose fault is it? Who precisely is government? Is it not a greedier extention of the same negligent and deluded populace? Maybe we are just who we are, careless and carefree, ! But that said, govt did not infect Coach Tella so they should not be blamed for his death. For all I know he was given the best treatment possible for the stage of the infection. And while I agree with you that people in other countries might live longer, I will associate it with best living practices (exercises, peace of mind etc) which afterall are not government dependent. |
Sports / Re: Coach Yemi Tella Is Dead!!! by gwatala(m): 4:08pm On Oct 20, 2007 |
He really was terminally ill. Do stop blaming the government. Cancer is not yet curable, even abroad. I'm sure the doctors knew it was too late anyway, Maybe he had even been told how much longer he was going to live, ! Yet, we should mourn. And of course celebrate his achievements. May he rest in peace. |

Religion / Re: Evolution Or Creation: Which Do You Believe? by gwatala(m): 5:04pm On Jan 06, 2007 |
MY CASE FOR EVOLUTION - THE NAVEL When I think about it, there's no way I can explain the presence of a navel on Adam. The navel is that little "belly-button" - a cut stub from the umblical cord that a kid uses to feed from when in the belly of his/her mother during pregnancy." So let's look at it: Adam did not have a navel. He could not have had it - for obvious reasons - he was not conceived, so he was not fed with the umblical cord. He could not have had an umblical cord. The same for Eve. Now what of Cain? He probably had one, because he was conceived. But he he, there's the tricky question? Would an offspring have a body part not on his parents? Christian creationists will say yes, surely. "God works miraculously." Or maybe God created the navel on both Adam and Eve so as to confound people like us in times like this! I don't think so. This leads me to evolution, which, as many scientific(ally proven) evidences have shown, remains the only most plausible explanation to this and many more now useless body parts: the tail bone in man, the tonsil(?), the appendix, etc etc. We are still evolving. Heck, even a Nairalander now generates electric charge! |

Business / Re: Your Bank Might Be Defrauding You? by gwatala(m): 6:31pm On Dec 02, 2006 |
Yea, they do defraud us. I once walked into my Bank in Jos to withdraw my money impromptu. I was not holding my withdrawal slip. This with the hope that the bank will grant me a leaflet, at least, with which to withdraw. They did not. Instead they asked me to sign out from between 300 and 500 naira for another *sheet* of withdrawal slip. Their excuse, to prevent people from randomly losing their passbooks, the "check" had been put in place. It wasn't funny. Elsewhere, you can pick up a sheet to withdraw your money anywhere in the banking hall. Your photo is in the bank's computer anyway. |

Some people on this thread support Dariye's removal because he allegedly stole. Hmm. They ignore the rule of law and the supremacy of the constitution. Now imagine a scenario where an accusation is made against Obasanjo (Transcorp, Andy Uba etc), and a few Senators (say 14 out of 109) carry out an impeachment process (in say two weeks, or less), would we keep quiet? The point here is this, today it is Plateau, tomorrow we don't know what next will be done to undermine the constitution, until it finally becomes just a bound stack of sheets, harmless as a toothless bulldog. |
