Senator Orji Uzor Kalu representing Abia-North Senatorial district was yesterday announced as appointed the Chief Whip of the 9th National Assembly .

The former Governor and first time Senator was named amongst other Senators who clinched principal positions in the 9th Assembly.   The Senate President Senator Ahmad Lawan announced the new development at the resumption of the Senate Plenary Session yesterday.

Senator Orji Kalu reacting to the appointment via his official twitter handle @OUKtweets appreciated his party for the appointment and also promised to work for the people .

He wrote :
"  After extensive deliberations and consultations by our Party the All Progressive's Congress (APC), I was officially appointed as announced the " Senate Chief Whip" of the 9th National Assembly.

Let me appreciate the members & leadership of our great party for considering me worthy to serve in this leadership capacity as a principal officer. I assure the party of my commitment to work assiduously to ensure that my legislative duties are carried out effectively and efficiently.

I would also work painstakingly to ensure that the "people oriented" policy programmes of both the Legislative and Executive are attained for the benefit of the good people of Nigeria & Abia-North in particular.  I will also contribute my quota  towards the development of my dear country Nigeria.

As The All Progressives Congress has named its Principal officers and the office of the Chief Whip being zoned to the Southeast the former Governor of Abia State and Abia-North Senator Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu will become the "FIRST" Principal Officer from the "SOUTHEAST" extraction to hold a "principal position" in the National Assembly in the history of the ruling All Progressive's Congress  (APC ) since its formation on the 6th of February,2013.

The party zoned the majority leader to the north central, deputy majority Leader to the South West while the south east got the chief whip and north west got deputy chief whip.

Former Governor of Nasarawa state and Chairman of parliamentary support, Abdullahi Adamu emerged the Senate Leader and Senator Ajayi Boroffice, representing Ondo north emerged the deputy Senate Leader.

Former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu emerged the Chief whip and Senator Yahyah Abdullahi from Kebbi state emerge Deputy Senate Chief whip.

The party is expected to name Principal officers in the House of representatives by Tuesday, July the 2nd.

Agricultural Empowerment : Senator Orji Kalu commences 2nd batch distribution of 450,000 palm seedlings.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu representing Abia-North Senatorial district has commenced the 2nd batch distribution of the 450,000 palm seedlings to farmers in Abia-North , Abia & neighboring states.

The Ist Batch distribution which commenced on April 2019 under the Agricultural Empowerment Initiative of the Orji Uzor kalu Foundation involved the distribution of Special High Yielding Palm Seedlings known as “Tenera” at no cost to beneficiary farmers in the State.

According to Senator Kalu, the initiative was his own support to President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy to revolutionize agriculture in Nigeria with aim of encouraging the people particularly youths to delve into farming in order to create wealth and become self-reliant.

Speaking at the launch of the 2nd batch distribution, the Executive Secretary of the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation Rev. Ola Jemaimah kalu stressed the aim of the initiative at creating wealth via Agriculture.
She said:” Recall that on April 29,2019 Senator Orji Kalu started the distribution of 450,000 special palm seedlings known as the “Tenera Specie” to the public and we have today have continued the 2nd batch distribution and the distribution is on-going. It is an Orji Uzor kalu Foundation Programme to ensure that by the 2030 poverty will be eradicated in Abia-State and Southeast in general because it is expected that the beneficiaries will be self-sufficient. The maturity period of the “Tenera Specie” is within 3-4 years and it will start yielding very high quality palm trees and we are giving them out free of charge all they need to do is to come register and collect the seedlings for onward planting. In addition, the Foundation has also acquired the services of an Agricultural consultant who would be educating the farmers on how best to nurture seedlings to get maximum yield.

The Agricultural empowerment programme is bi-partisan and cuts across religion, tribe or gender. Most of the beneficiary farmers are from Abia-North, Abia State, Enugu, Cross River and other neighboring states. The initiative also aims at putting fallow lands into productive uses. The only criterion for qualification is proof of ownership of family land,” she said, adding that the size of the family land would determine the quantity of seedling to be given to people. If you have 100 hectares of land, you will get the quantity for that size. If you have 10 hectares, you will also be given the quantity for the size of the land.

Similarly Speaking on behalf of the farmers gathered at the Igbere,Bende residence of the Abia-North Senator, Rev. Alvin I. appreciated Senator Orji Uzor kalu for the initiative while also highlighting the many economic benefits of the programme.

Ahead of tomorrow’s inauguration of the 9th National Assembly and election of principal officers, stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East and South- South zones have cautioned the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Onilu, over comments capable of destroying the party.

Onilu had on Monday morning issued a statement, saying the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC had formally adopted Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who was involved in the mace-snatching saga in the 8th National Assembly as the party’s candidate for the position of deputy senate president.

According to the Chairman of the South East and South-South Progressives Mind (SSPM), Chief Amadi Amstrong, any decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC must be duly, appropriately and well-communicated to party leaders, chieftains, members, loyalists, well-wishers and the general public.

In a statement issued in Asaba on Monday, the group faulted Onilu for misleading not only the contenders for the position of deputy Senate president but also the public, whose interest will be protected by the National Assembly.

He said: “The pronouncement of the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Lanre Onilu on the purported adoption of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as the party’s candidate for the position of Deputy Senate President, is self-serving and unpatriotic as it is Onilu’s wishful thinking and not the position of President Muhammadu Buhari and other stakeholders of our great party including highly respected members of the APC NWC.

He said: “The APC has a working system and procedures are professionally and duly followed. We know that if truly the president and members NWC of our great party have adopted Omo-Agege, their decision will be communicated in a robust and just manner.

“Onilu should guide his utterances as they are capable of causing disharmony among party stakeholders.

“We stand firmly with all contenders for the position of deputy senate president and wish them all the best of luck in the contest on the floor of the red and green chambers.”

While pledging their unalloyed support for the duo of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively, the group urged the party leadership to allow free contest for other positions in the National Assembly.

Earlier, Senator Francis Alimikhena (APC) representing Edo North senatorial district, vowed not to drop his ambition to become the deputy senate president.

Alimikhena, who served as Deputy Chief Whip in the 8th Senate, disclosed that he was still in the race, while debunking the purported adoption of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as the adopted candidate of the APC.

The senator in a statement said: “My attention has been drawn to speculations in some quarters claiming that I, Francis Alimikhena, have stepped down from the race for the position of deputy senate president.

“I am still in the race. I have not stepped down for anybody. How will I step down and who will I step down for? I am a ranking senator, a principal officer in the 8th Senate, an experienced personality who had served on various ad-hoc Committee s in the just concluded Senate.

“I want to assure my colleagues of purposeful leadership; I want them to support and vote for me as the deputy senate president as I promise to provide purposeful leadership. I have the humility, expertise, and temperament required for the office.

“I have been a very loyal party member; my relationship also cuts across party divide.”

Contrary to speculations in some quarters that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), after wide consultations with President Muhammdu Buhari and other stakeholders of the party, has formally endorsed Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as the party’s candidate for the position of Deputy Senate President in the 9th National Assembly, a leading contender in the race and Senator-elect, Abia North Senatorial Zone, Dr. Orji Kalu, has debunked insinuations that he (Kalu) had withdrawn from the contest.
The National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Onilu, had on Monday morning issued a statement that the National Working Committee has formally adopted Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as the party’s candidate for the position of Deputy Senate President.
Kalu, who had some days ago met behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari disclosed that the President only adopted the candidacies of the duo of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively, while noting that anyone is free to contest for other principal positions.
In a statement by his media office on Monday and signed by Ken Cole, the former governor stressed that as a staunch supporter of Buhari and a loyal and committed member of the APC, he (Kalu) would always abide by the decisions of the President and highly respected members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
He, however, said the speculation of the formal endorsement of Omo-Agege was the handiwork of selfish elements in the party who are self-serving and desperate to cause disharmony among party stakeholders.
Kalu said: “Ahead of tomorrow’s inauguration of the 9th National Assembly and election of principal officers, politicians have started deploying different antics to satisfy their ambitions.
“One of such is a statement credited to National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mallam Lanre Onilu, claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari and the NWC of the party have formally adopted Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as the party’s candidate for the position of Deputy Senate President.
“I hold the President in high esteem as well as the National Chairman of our great party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and other members of the NWC and as such, I will not disobey any formal pronouncement by them.
“However, I am still in the race to become Deputy Senate President because the President and the NWC have not adopted any candidate and as such the contest is open to all members of the party, who have the capability.
“I have the political dexterity, leadership qualities and goodwill to complement the efforts of the Senate President in actualising the objectives of the legislature to support the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in taking Nigeria to greater heights.
“Leadership positions in the 9th Senate should be given to people who have the will to support the agenda of the APC while not deviating from the ideals of democracy.
“As I continue to mobilise support for the position of Deputy Senate President, I commend the President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and other stakeholders of the party for their support.
“Come tomorrow by the special grace of God and to the admiration of APC members and Nigerians at large, I will emerge as Deputy Senate President in the 9th National Assembly”.
Kalu, while appealing to the leadership of the APC to give a level-playing ground for all contenders for the position of Deputy Senate President, who are APC members, maintained that he (Kalu) is still in the race except otherwise advised by the President or the party’s highest decision-making body”.

NASS: South-South, South-East to Produce Deputy Senate President Source reveals

Strong indications have emerged that the Presidency has backed the Southeast for the post of the deputy Senate Presidency. Fresh facts emerged on Tuesday from a reliable source in the Presidency that President Buhari did not endorse the post of the Deputy Senate Presidency to the South-South. According to the source, the President at a recent meeting with some of the party stakeholders at the villa, revealed that he only endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan for the Senate Presidency and Hon.Femi Gbajabiamila for the speaker of the House of Representatives, and he asked the APC National Working Committee to ensure that all other positions were equitably distributed amongst other geo-political zones.

The source further revealed, that the President still holds strong opinion that the Deputy Senate President position should be zoned to the Southeast and South-South and that he is now open with his stance towards the position to favour the Southeast region. The source further dispelled the impression that the President hates the Igbos.

Meanwhile, the source also confirmed that at the emergency APC NWC caucus meeting which was summoned yesterday the Party had resolved that the Deputy Senate President position will be between the Southeast and the South-South. The source also disclosed that the the NWC were not able to agree on which particular zone between the South South and Southeast to produce the Deputy Senate Presidency.

According to the source at that APC NEC meeting which was held yesterday, also agreed with the Presidency that the position of the Deputy Senate Presidency was between the Southeast and the South-South. This latest information has clarified the earlier report that the position had already been zoned to the South-South by some ministers. The source said that the President was infuriated by the false reports earlier peddled by some ministers in the news that the President has endorsed the South-South to produce the Deputy Senate Presidency.

Also disclosed by the source was that President questioned if there was any issue in the Deputy Senate Presidency being zoned to the Southeast. According to the source the President, from all indications believed that it’s only fair to give southeast the position of the deputy Senate President since the National Chairman of the party comes from the South-South and he also has just re-appointed the Central Bank Governor also from South-South zone.

In conclusion, the source indicated that as at the moment of this report, that the APC NWC after their emergency meeting on this same issue, only agreed to zone it to the Southeast and South South. In line with all these, there are high indications that the matter will likely be settled on the floor of the Red Chamber as the 9th Senate inaugurates.

9th NASS: I will contest for the Deputy Senate Presidency  - Orji Kalu

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed doors with former Governor of Abia State and Senator-elect, Orji Uzor Kalu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Kalu insisted he would seek election for the office of the Deputy Senate President in the ninth National Assembly.

According to him, he was at the villa to deliver to President Buhari, a letter from the Venezuelan leader, Nicolas Maguro.

He said “It was a very brief one. I am sure since he became President, I have never been to his office, and this is the first time, I have always seen him in private as a private citizen.

“I have come to see Mr. President, and I acted like a special envoy now. I delivered a letter from President Maduro of Venezuela to President Buhari.”

He said that he was waiting on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the position of Deputy Senate President, but that he will contest on the floor if they failed to do so.

He said, “Well, I am going to be contesting on the floor of the senate. I am waiting for the party to zone, and if the party continues to hold it, and don’t zone it, I will contest on the floor of the house,”.

Commenting on support for the election of the next Senate President, Kalu said he has since thrown his weight behind the emergence of the candidacy of Ahmed Lawan.

He said fifty-six senators have already appended their signatures in support for Lawan while two others who are presently in Makkah were being awaited to lend their support.

“I have already endorsed Ahmed Lawan as the senate president. That is sacrosanct in my mind, and I am appealing to the other parties, let us have only one candidate in the Senate instead of going to drag about.

“So, we are on course, yesterday, when I returned from Venezuela, Ahmed Lawan was with me in the house, and I became the fifty-six APC Senator to endorse him and signed.

“As I am talking to you now we are having two more people who are in Makka, one senator from Katsina and the other from Lagos. It is fifty-eight senators that are going to be signing in, and we have the majority to make him Senate president,” he noted.

Contrary to speculations that former Governor of Abia State and businessman, Dr. Orji Kalu, met with President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, to cut oil deals, the Senator-elect (Abia North Senatorial District) has disclosed that his visit to Venezuela was a peace initiative of the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation and its partners across the globe.
According to the Forbes-rated billionaire, who did not disclose full details of the peace moves, for any nation to thrive, there must be peace and harmony.
Kalu, who stated that he used the opportunity of his visit to also meet with members of the Afro-Venezuelan community, called on the governments of the United States of America, United Kingdom, China, Russia, Nigeria and others to fashion out an inclusive and integrated strategy to overcome the crisis facing Venezuela.

BREAKING: Orji Kalu Meets President Of Venezuela, Nicolàs Maduro (Photos)

Former Governor of Abia and Senator-elect for Abia North Senatorial District, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday met with President Nicolàs Maduro, President of Federal Republic of Venezuela.

Igbere TV reports that the meeting of both leaders comes barely 48 hours after Orji Kalu strike an oil deal with the Venezuelan government.

Recall that Kalu had during the weekend, secured a major oil deal with the Venezuelan government in far away Caracas.

Igbere TV had reported that the former governor and some of his aides are in Venezuela on a business trip.

He was received by H.E Dr Martin N. Cobham, Nigerian Ambassador to Venezuela, upon his arrival.

Our correspondent present reports that the meeting afforded both leaders opportunity to strengthen the ties between both countries — Nigeria and Venezuela.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, President Maduro expressed readiness to work closely with the Nigerian government, while congratulating Kalu on his electoral victory as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election for a second term.

The President who could not hide his joy after the meeting, took to Twitter to express gratitude to the former Abia State governor.

“I received brother Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I expressed my congratulations to the recent electoral victory of President Elect, Muhammadu Buhari. We ratify our readiness to continue to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation,” he tweeted.

On his part, Dr. Kalu said he was glad by the assurances of President Maduro to continue to deepen the existing Nigerian-Venezuelan relationship.

He wrote, “It was a great pleasure meeting with the President of the Republic of Venezuela, Nicolàs Maduro. He extended his congratulations to President Muhammadu Buhari over his electoral victory. I’m glad by his assurances to continue to deepen the Nigerian-Venezuela Relationship.”

Kalu, a Forbes-rated billionaire businessman, has been seen in different countries in the past few weeks obviously on the move to attract development to his immediate Constituency, Abia North, and Nigeria, in general.

Aside being a philanthropist and politician, OUK, as fondly called, has built a business empire with vast investments in oil and gas, banking, insurance, media and publishing, real estate, agriculture, aviation, hospitality, shipping, construction, manufacturing and others operating under the parent company: SLOK Group. These business entities have on their payroll thousands of Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

Even though he is yet to be sworn in as a Senator, the billionaire philanthropist had on different fora, reiterated that his constituents will benefit a lot from his representation at the National Assembly.

Education solution to Northern insecurity- Orji Kalu

Online users commend former Governor .

The Senator-elect, Abia North Senatorial District, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has said lack of education has contributed to why banditry, terrorism and other crimes have remained a hydra headed challenge in the Northern Nigeria.

The former governor in his official  Twitter handle said until steps are taken to address the problem of high rate of out of school children in the region, they will remain vulnerable recruits to arm groups.

He said, “Besides deploying security men to combat bandits,terrorists & other crimes in the North. Education remains the “key” to a long term lasting solution to the crisis.Unless that happens the current out of school children would continue to remain vulnerable recruits to Armed Groups.”
