Coronavirus: Stay indoors for 2 weeks, Senate tells incoming travellers from China, other countries I almost travelled to China few days ago - Senator 30th January 2020 Kenneth Udeh, Abuja Worried by the ravaging spread of the deadly Coronavirus in China and 15 other countries, the Nigerian Senate on Thursday directed incoming travellers from China, Asia and other affected countries to isolate themselves by staying indoors and disassociate themselves from physical contact with the Nigerian public for at least two weeks. The Senate further urged the Nigerians Intending to travel to Asia, especially China, to heed the Federal Government’s travel advisory by putting their travel arrangements on hold till further notice until the outbreak of Coronavirus is vanquished. In the same vein, the Senate advised the Nigerian public to adopt health precautionary measures by washing their hands with running water, it further urged those with reported cases or likely infection or symptoms that are approximately associated with the Coronavirus to visit the hospitals for an urgent health check. The Senate made the resolutions in response to a motion moved by Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu South) titled ‘Motion on Coronavirus Outbreak and Preventive Response in Nigeria’. According to Utazi, the virus infects humans and was spread via air, coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, touching an object or surface contaminated with the virus. Utazi explained that the symptoms of the infection were characterised by running nose, sore throat, feeling unwell, cough and fever. The Senate expressed worry that the deadly disease had killed over 170 persons and infected more than 630. The Senate pointed out that the number of infected people would increase rapidly as the disease outbreak occurred at the period when Chinese around the world travelled home for their annual Holiday and week-long Lunar New Year, and they would be returning back to their various countries of residence. Utazi informed the Senate that the Federal Ministry of Health through the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had risen to the occasion and were closely monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by the new Coronavirus. He further disclosed that aviation regulatory agencies recently stepped up surveillance across operating international airports across the country in a bid to contain the spread of the endemic. The Senate commended and lent support to the Federal Government’s travel advisory. Supporting the Motion, Senator Barau Jubrin (Kano North) called on health officials in the country to employ preventive measures. In his words: “People are dying in their numbers in China and disease spreads very fast across the globe. Other countries have taken effective measures to make sure that this disease doesn’t find its way into their countries. This motion is a wakeup call to our health officials to make sure they employ preventive measures to make sure that this disease does not come into our country. We should find a way to send an urgent message through this motion to the executive to make sure that the proper thing is done because once this country enters this country we are in trouble.” In his contribution, Senator James Manager (Delta South) hailed the Federal Government’s precautionary measures, disclosing that he had almost embarked on a journey to China but changed his mind, saying “I don’t want to die”. He advised that preventive measures be taken by all Nigerians. “I am surprised that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not been able to qualify the virus as an international health emergency. I am happy that we are rising to the occasion here in this country, that means we are learning from history. This Coronavirus is like another Ebola disease, we were able to deal with it and learn from the experience. Our health ministry is doing well and I want them not to relent. “In fact, myself, I was to travel to China a few days ago, but I said no I will not go to that part of the world. I don’t want to die. At every opportunity please wash your hands, if you have not been doing that you can never tell if the person is transmitting to you or you are transmitting to another person. The Senate, in its resolution, commended the Federal Ministry of Health through the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for their efforts aimed at stemming the Coronavirus infection in Nigeria and urged them not to lower their guard until the scourge was eradicated internationally and locally. It also asked the Federal Government to allocate more funds to the NCDC to acquire the latest equipment for research into drugs and diagnosis of diseases. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/coronavirus-stay-indoors-for-2-weeks-senate-tells-incoming-travellers-from-china-other-countries/

The media really knows how to invade the minds of ignorant people. This write up is coming from the nation owned by Tinubu. Till date EFCC has refused to probe Tinubu despite the glaring evidences. This write is a sponsored write up aimed at spuring public sympathy for Magu. Tinubu knows that once Magu is replaced he is finished. |

Olamide has achieved quite a lot and no doubt he is a great talented Artist who has contributed immensely to the music industry. However, Olamide has failed to realise that things are changing in the music industry. If you check out the lyrical contents being released these days by new artists they do less vulgar or explicit contents. People want to listen to new sounds not really noisy and shake your yansh kinda songs. These days people pay attention to lyrics and how meaningful they are... most especially the sounds ... |
Orji Kalu Suffering For Opposing Northern 3rd Term Agenda - HURIWA A frontline Civil Rights Advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has described the reported sealing of The Sun Newspaper by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as unjust and unfair. The group noted that the newspaper as a business entity was not part of the parties to the suit in which the former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, was convicted by the Federal High Court over fraud of N7 billion. HURIWA’s statement was signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday. The group has also asked the acting chairman of tge EFCC, Ibrahim Magu to show professionalism and stop the political media showmanship of jubilating all over the place over the conviction of Kalu as if to say there is a hidden agenda that the conviction has helped to achieve for some political interest in the corridors of power. HURIWA said the only time committed patriots will applaud the EFCC is when some of those who are Ministers today despite their accusations by the anti-graft agency as having committed series of corruption related offences are arrested, prosecuted and convicted. The rights group also condemned the withdrawal of the charges against Senator Danjuma Goje. HURIWA also stated that the trial and conviction of Kalu is insufficient to acclaim that the EFCC and President Muhammadu Buhari led administration was carrying out forensic anti- Corruption warfare. It said that the APC Senator is a political victim of anti-Igbo vigilante justice and the selective justice being practiced actively by the current Federal government. HURIWA also expressed shock and consternation that the President of the Court of Appeal Justice, Zainab Bulkachuwa, has dabbled into the political fray of jubilating over the conviction of Kalu even when she is aware that as a citizen of Nigeria covered under the Nigerian Constitution the lawmaker has a right of Appeal up to the Supreme Court. The rights group said as one of those who believed in the sanctity of the Constitution and as a civil rights advocacy group that works for equality of rights, social justice, equity and fairness, it supports the qualitative, non-biased and fair prosecution of all allegedly corrupt politically exposed persons so the stolen public fund are refunded to those specific states from where the heist happened whilst the convicts were in political office. HURIWA, however, expressed reservation that the conviction of Kalu may have some political connotation and may not be too far from the politics of the 2023 elections in which supporters of Buhari in the North are vigorously campaigning for the office of the President to still remain in the North which Kalu is known to have opposed vigorously insisting that he doesn’t support third term agenda. https://dailypost.ng/2019/12/15/orji-kalu-buhari-magu-justice-bulkachuwa-under-fire-over-lawmakers-conviction-sealing-of-the-sun-by-efcc/

PRESS STATEMENT EFCC VISIT TO THE SUN OFFICE WITH ARMED POLICEMEN: OUR STAND Three officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with four heavily armed policemen on Saturday, December 15, 2019 at about 10.00 am arrived the corporate headquarters of The Sun Publishing Limited at 2, Coscharis Street, Kirikiri Industrial Layout, Apapa, Lagos and put up a notice for staff and the general public to keep off the premises. The EFCC officials, who came in a white Toyota bus with registration number, ABUJA BWR-644GA, wrote on The Sun's fence, "EFCC, keep off." They also advised our staff to collect their personal belongings from the office as they will come back to seal the premises completely. We do not understand the legal basis for this EFCC action. It is on record that there is a pending appeal at the Supreme Court with Suit No: SC/546/2018 wherein The Sun Publishing Limited appealed against the Judgement delivered by the Court of Appeal on the interim forfeiture order made against it by a Federal High Court in 2007 based on ex parte proceeding. The Notice of Appeal and Motion for Stay of Execution were duly served on EFCC by the bailiffs of the Court. It is also pertinent to state that EFCC vide a letter written by Counsel to The Sun Publishing Limited, dated 22nd May, 2018 and duly received by one Caleb Peter on behalf of Rotimi Jacobs & Co. was further put on notice of the pending appeal at the Supreme Court and advised to stay action in the matter pending the hearing of the Motion for Stay of execution and the appeal. Again, it is instructive to state that The Sun Publishing Limited was not a party to the case of EFCC vs. Orji Uzor Kalu & 2 Others, so we do not see why the Judgment in that case should lead to attempt to seal The Sun Publishing Limited premises. Further more, we are aware that both Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Slok Nig Limited have since appealed the Judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris and a hearing date given. We wish to reiterate that The Sun Publishing Limited is an ongoing corporate limited liability company and its shares are owned by various individuals distinct from Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. Therefore, the recent Judgment against Senator Orji Uzor Kalu should not be used to disturb the operations of the company and the proprietary rights of its innocent shareholders until the matters are dispensed with at the Supreme Court. In view of the foregoing, we call and appeal to the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to urgently intervene and advise EFCC appropriately on the legal consequences of its actions. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/efcc-visit-to-the-sun-office-with-armed-policemen-our-stand/

Bring Back Town Criers" As Enugu Assembly Calls for Effective Communication The Enugu State House of Assembly Committee Chairman, on Information, Mr. Geoffrey Mba, has called for the revival of town criers in rural areas to educate the people on the activities of government. Mba made the call in Enugu on Wednesday when he visited the Ministry of Information on oversight function. He said that people in rural areas were unaware of some policies and programmes of government beneficial to them. “It is unfortunate that many rural dwellers are not aware of government programmes that benefit them; they rely on second hand information which are most times not favourable to them,’’ he said. Mba advised the ministry to make it a priority to educate the 474 communities in the state on government’s activities and programmes. He said that the visit was to rob minds with officials on the challenges facing the ministry and the way forward. Responding, the new Commissioner for Information, Mr Chidi Aroh, promised to do his best to reposition the ministry. Aroh said that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had pledged to support the ministry’s programmes for effective service delivery. The commissioner said that the ministry had raised executive memo to the government for the establishment of Enugu State Archive. He said that a state like Enugu should have an archive where its history commencing from the period of colonial rule till date was preserved. He expressed regret that the government printing press which was expected to generate revenue for the state had only 42 staff receiving salaries without doing anything. The commissioner said the government spent over N300 million in printing various documents annually. He insisted that if the printing press was revived, it would save the government funds spent on printing. Aroh vowed to make Enugu State Broadcasting Service a television of choice and stressed the need to introduce Igbo programmes on the station to inform and educate the masses. INEC: For Belonging to APC, Senate Dismisses REC Nominee Confirms Others Kenneth Udeh,Abuja The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday approved the nomination of Umar Mukhtar Gajiram (Borno) and Dr. Aiaiibo Sinikiem Johnson (Bayelsa) as Resident Electoral Commissioners for their respective states, it however struck out the nomination of Mr Raheem Muideen as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State allegations of his partisan membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress. The lawmakers in a voice vote unanimously dismissed the nomination during its plenary on Wednesday. Recall that Muideen had earlier during this screening on November 5, 2019 ,told the Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that he remained a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Muideen had also during screening confirmed being a member of the governing party, he also revealed that he was a campaign director of a Governorship Aspirant in the state. During the debate over the matter, the chairman of the committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya presenting the report of his committee on Wednesday told the Senate that Muideen’s nomination was not confirmed because he could not defend the allegations of bias levelled against him by a petitioner. The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo –Agege who presided at plenary, made efforts to save Muideen, but all his attempts proved abortive. Omo-Agege had argued that since the petitioner failed to show up at the Senate panel to defend his petition, that Muideen should be confirmed. But the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, pointed out that the committee had to stand down the confirmation of the Osun nominee because Muideen confirmed he was a card-carrying member of the APC. According to him, the panel only deferred Muideen’s confirmation pending when he would clear himself of the allegation. After approving the recommendations of the INEC panel, the Senate confirmed the appointment of other nominees but rejected that of Muideen https://www.sunnewsonline.com/inec-for-belonging-to-apc-senate-dismisses-rec-nominee-confirms-others/
