Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has said his arrest in the United States over credit card fraud and forgery in 1986 is not sufficient grounds for his disqualification by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abiodun disclosed this while responding to a petition submitted by an APC member, Ayodele Oludiran on behalf of Oluwatobi Sofela of Ogun Bibire Unity Forum to the National Chairman of the party, Abdulahi Adamu

Sofela had warned that the party might lose the governorship seat in Ogun due to Abiodun’s criminal history and its concealment from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) despite swearing an oath.

He also cautioned that the discrepancies in the governor’s educational qualifications might also cause opposition parties to question his eligibility for re-election bid, swaying the electorate to their side.

“If action is not taken, the chances of our great party, the APC, retaining the governorship seat in Ogun State shall be in jeopardy as previously seen in Bayelsa and Zamfara states,” Sofela said.

According to People’s Gazette, responding, Abiodun said that his probable arrest was not a conviction and hence was not answerable to the laws that applied to criminals.

He added that even if he was convicted in 1986, the Nigerian constitution only disqualifies ex-felons from contesting political offices if their sentence was less than 10 years before the election date.

“An aspirant or candidate will only be disqualified by the court if the false information he gives relates to a constitutional requirement of eligibility. APC is not a court of law. Accordingly, it cannot disqualify our client,” the governor’s lawyer, Afe Babalola wrote in a letter to Adamu, citing section 29(6) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“In any event, assuming but not conceding that our client was even convicted in 1986, he would still not be affected or caught by Section 182 (1) (e) of the CFRN because the CFRN requires that the conviction which would disqualify a person from the position of the governor must have occurred ten years before the date of election to the office.”

SaharaReporters had in March published the criminal record of how Abiodun was jailed in 1986 for credit card fraud in Miami Dade Florida, USA.

The governor was said to have used a pseudo name (Shawn Michael Davids) with the aim of concealing his criminal identity.

The record revealed that Abiodun was jailed for committing criminal offences which bordered on credit card fraud, petty theft and check forgery.

He was arrested on November 7, 1986, for fighting and injuring a police officer in an attempt to resist arrest.

While being processed at the station, his fingerprint was run through the crime database and it was discovered that the Adedapo Oluseun Abiodun being processed for detention was the same as Shawn Michael Davids.

His criminal record and history were thus cemented and he was jailed.

According to some documents obtained by SaharaReporters, Abiodun's jail number was 8600B9436.

In 2015, while contesting for the Ogun East Senatorial seat against the late Buruji Kasamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he applied for the redaction of his criminal records in Miami Dade, Florida.

This act of concealment meant he could lie on his Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) forms that he had no prior criminal records; a perjury offence that could have disqualified him from ever holding an appointive or elective office in Nigeria.

The redaction was granted in August 2015.

2. The 12KM Apete to Akuffo road. First concrete road in Oyo state to be commissioned this year.

3. Saki Igbooro Igboho road. 45KM also to be ready for commissioning by July.

4. 21KM Airport to Ajia with a spur to amuloko to be commissioned too by July.

5. Dualisation of the Akala express from new garage to Apata. The road was done by Akala and left undone and untouched by Ajimobi. It was done to alleviate traffic at Apata. Now it is ongoing to be completed before the end of the year. A 12KM road.

6. 76KM Iseyin Ogbomsho road. This too will be finished this year. No administration in the history of this state has ever awarded a 76KM single road. To be commissioned too this year.

7. The Oyo Iseyin road. About 70percent completed to be commissioned too on or before July

8. Dualisation of the airport road. Road will be completed this year too and the road will be named after omololu oluloyo

9. Fixing of the Iwo road interchangeable road and other adjacent road in preparation for the completion of the Iwo road terminals.

Okay I get you now. However government cannot do all roads at the same time. They will have to do the major first and if there is chance to do that leading to olopometa they can. But not now. There are thousands of roads currently bad in Oyo State that cannot be done at the same time.

See, you are getting almost two roads there. The one from Ajia linking amuloko and the dualisation from Olorusogo. Some areas no even see shuku. This is commendable and you be at least happy.

I was in Ibadan last weekend The traffic was too much . From Adegbayi to iwo road , i spent more than two hours. The best Governor in Oyo State based on first term achievements is till late Ajimobi though Seyi Makinde is not an audio projects governor . Ojoo and challenge bus terminals were comissioned yesterday but he needs to work on the Security architecture of Oyo State especially Ibadan .

And you don't know that the traffic at Iwo road currently ongoing is due to two projects on going there? Isn't it? Except if it is compulsory you go to Iwo road,Iwo road nowadays is a NO NO due to construction and that is why there is mad traffic till it finishes.

I once lived at Olorusogo asolo way back 2001 to 2005. That area which is the Ona Ara local government is the worst local government in Ibadan. As at 2001,if you do not leacs the area by 6.30 you are a dead meat. You will be getting to Olorusogo express by 8.30 AM or more due to traffic. That areas is a total and complete mess up due to traffic and which was due to the singular road passing through the area. They have no other access road except that road..

Calls for dualisation of the road have been ongoing for years until seyi came to start the road dualisation. When the project was approved,the people of the area went to the secretariat to dance and be happy because they know it is a huge relief for them

Before then,the road coming from Old Ife road to Ajia with a spur to amuloko is currently being done to be completed by July,this will also enable the people of asolo amuloko and people living around that Asics going to old Ife road to be able to pass through Ajia.

Now the big one was being done which is the dualisation of the major road that leads to the area yet you are complaining that your bridge is being demolished

Apete. The Apete road is the first concrete road in Oyo state and the road construction is being taken by no other by Seyi makinde. The road should be finished this year infact anytime soon sef ogether with the bridge that was just demolished for a bigger and better bridge. The bridge during rainfalls always causes deaths and traffic not it is demolished to pave way for a bigger one and better one you are complaining. Tell me exactly why you are complaining? I don't know please. If the road is not done,and left alone like it was during the previous administrations na una go still dey complain. Now it is being done you are still complaining.

I passed through apete to Awotan February and I was amazed. Apete has changed overnight due to that road construction yet you are complaining.

Sawmill. Two projects are currently being done there. The federal government is doing the Lagos ibadan expressway to end at Ojoo and the state government is doing the dualisation of the Gate to Old Ife road. The bridge above that was demolished was the FG and not even seyi so I don't know why you are complaining. Both the FG and the state are working hand in hand as the bridge will be closed for 3months or more sef.

As the FG is working above, likewise the state government too is working below.
