PoliticsIt Is Unreasonable For Communities Hosting Power Plants To Demand Free Electrici by happney65(op): 12:53pm On Sep 20, 2018
"Joy Ogaji, Executive Secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), has said it is “unreasonable” for communities where power plants are located to demand free supply of electricity.

According to Ogaji, the power producers do not owe them more than their duty to perform their Corporate Social Responsibility, which in itself is a privilege, and not a right.

She listed some of the host communities in Rivers, Abia states (Alaoji GenCo), Bayelsa (Gbarain GenCo), Ondo (Omotosho GenCo) states and other places where power stations are sited, noting that they had been issuing various threats, in spite of the many Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) of the GenCos to them.

Speaking to Daily Trust, she said: “Their position is that NEPA in those days promised them free electricity supply but that was in the past and are political speeches which should not be used to hold down investors. It is high time that government intervened because what they are requesting for is unreasonable. They want free power supply.”

Speaking on the losses incurred from the agitations of members of the host communities, she noted that Gbarain GenCo, which produces 100MW daily was shut down since Septehttp://saharareporters.com/2018/09/20/it-unreasonable-communities-hosting-power-plants-demand-free-electricity-says-apgcmber 6, 2018 over the agitation and has lost 1,400MW.

She said: “If you know how much a megawatt costs, it is huge and that is just for a power plant. That is not to talk of the injuries and harassment of the staff; the losses are unquantifiable.”

PoliticsTinubu, APC Mount Pressure On Ambode To Step Down, Endorse Sanwo-olu by happney65(op): 7:30am On Sep 20, 2018
"The battle on who gets the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State continued on Wednesday with the party leadership mounting pressure on the incumbent Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to drop his second term bid and endorse his opponent, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu came into reckoning in Lagos politics after he obtained the state governorship form last Tuesday and immediately got the backing of the Mandate Movement in the Lagos APC.

The Mandate Movement is led by the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was Ambode’s political godfather.

The chairmen of the 57 councils had also declared support for Sanwo-Olu.

The governor and Tinubu have been in the news in the past few days because of an alleged rift over the second term bid of Ambode.

Tinubu had refused to back Ambode’s second term ambition despite pleas by notable people in the state and the country.

Sanwo-Olu, a former commissioner in the state, on Sunday formally declared his intention to vie for the Lagos State governorship ticket of the APC, promising to restore the glory of the state when he was voted in as the governor.

Notable APC leaders in the state, who were either allies of Tinubu or his followers, were at the declaration.

On Monday, Ambode’s wife, Bolanle had tried to save her husband’s job when she met with Tinubu in Osun State and tried to pacify him to change his mind. The meeting did not yield positive result.

Our correspondent learnt that both the state and national leaders of the party met on Wednesday and mounted pressure on the Lagos governor to accept the decision of the state party leaders.

It was gathered that Ambode, however, told them that he would prefer to go ahead with the direct primary option of the party in the state.

A source said, “Ambode was told to step down and forget his second term ambition. He was told to publicly endorse Sanwo-Olu as his successor. He was promised a ministerial appointment after the APC might have won the presidential election. He was even told to pick a ministry of his choice.

“But Ambode seemed not to be pleased with the directives of the leaders as he declined the ministerial dangle. He also told them to allow the APC primary process to continue as planned. For now, the meeting is still continuing and there is no compromise in sight.”

Our correspondent also learnt on Wednesday that Ambode had instructed his camp not to speak to any journalist and wait for the electoral process to pan out.

“We told him that he might likely lose if he decided not to fight back, but he just smiled,” another source said.

However, it was gathered that the state APC leaders were still insisting that Ambode must go as of Wednesday evening.

Also, it was gathered that the meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council, the APC’s highest advisory political organ, which held in Lagos, did not discuss Ambode’s issue.

It was gathered that the body was supposed to advise the party on the choice between Ambode and Sanwo-Olu and its implication for the party.

There had been reports that the verdict of the body would seal the fate of both Ambode and Sanwo-Olu.

A source said the meeting merely took briefing on the three aspirants – Ambode, Sanwo-Olu and Dr Femi Hamzat – and later discussed Osun State governorship election.

The body was also said to have advised the party to shift the primary to September 29, 2018, instead of the September 25 it planned to hold the primary.

The source said, “Asiwaju, the governor, as well as the two other aspirants, were not present at the meeting. A briefing on the profile of the aspirants was taken and advice was given that the primary be shifted to September 29.

“The body will meet again on Saturday when members will discuss more on the aspirants.”

Pro-Ambode demonstration holds in Lagos

Meanwhile, some residents of Lagos State took to the street on Wednesday to protest against Tinubu’s refusal to back Ambode

The protesters, who stormed the secretariat of the Ikeja Local Government Area in Ikeja, said the incumbent governor deserved automatic ticket.

One of the protesters, Mr Charles Akube, said Ambode’s infrastructural development projects were enough to earn him a second term.

He said, “Tinubu should not use politics to spoil the development going on in Lagos. Ambode has done enough to get a second term.”

PoliticsDariye Is Very Important To Us; We Are Praying For State Pardon For Him, Says AP by happney65(op): 3:59pm On Sep 19, 2018
"The All Progressive Congress (APC) has said it is praying that Joshua Dariye, who picked the nomination form to contest for a seat in the National Assembly in the 2019 elections, gets state pardon.

Dariye, who is currently serving a 14-year jail term over financial misdeeds, while he was Plateau State governor, obtained the forms by proxy a few days ago.

Noting his “importance” to the party, APC also said it had no right to deny him the form, even while in prison.

Chindo Dafat, APC Publicity Secretary in Plateau, told NAN that “Somebody could be in the hospital or prison and pick a nomination form from there. We have no right to deny anyone a nomination form. Even INEC cannot stop Dariye from contesting the 2019 elections.

“There is no law that stops him from buying the form. Whoever comes for the nomination form can get it. I see it as a constitutional matter. Only the court can disqualify him.”

Dafat also affirmed that Dariye had filled the form and submitted, noting that he is to battle with three others — Zakari Dimka, Sam Piwuna and Manji Pompori — for the APC ticket.

He said: “Yes, Sen. Dariye has picked a nomination form to seek a third term. It is true. He is among those jostling for the APC ticket in Plateau Central.

“His (Dariye’s) ward secretary came and signed the form on his behalf. It has been filled and his supporters are already campaigning ahead of the party's primary election.

“Aside possible success in the appeal, we are also praying for a state pardon. That is another possibility.

“Dariye is very important to our party, unfortunately, this happened to him. It is not that we cannot win elections without him; we can win without him, but he has done a lot and is well loved by his people.

“If Dariye wins elections from prison, he will not be the first Nigerian to do that. Iyiola Omisore from Osun, once won a senate seat while in prison.”

PoliticsDavid Mark: I Will Turn Nigeria’s Economy Around In Two Years by happney65(op): 6:55am On Sep 19, 2018
"A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator David Mark, has promised to turn around the economy of the country within two years if elected President of Nigeria in the 2019 general elections.

Mark, a former Senate President, made the promise on Tuesday at the PDP secretariat in Lokoja while on a campaign visit to solicit votes of the state delegates to the presidential primaries in October.

He pledged to do many things differently to revamp the economy saying, “a lot of research had been done on the economy and if given the chance, he would bring them to bear and turn around things.’’

Economic growth under his watch, he said, would experience tremendous change within 700 days, which would be physical rather than based on paper statistics.

He said, “I will do so many things differently. When we put our processes in, the woman who is selling groundnuts by the roadside will feel the impact.

“It is not by mere statistics or indices that we churn out. We want the ordinary people on the streets to feel the impact of the economy on their lives.

“We have young men and women who are neck dip into research and understand the economy of this country.”

On his acceptance by the electorate in the core northern part of the country, Mark said he had equally worked for candidates from the core north and that now it was their turn to support him.

“I think the core north should support us because we also have supported the core north. It is a give and take thing and we are talking about Nigeria.

“We are not talking about a section of this country. If I don’t have a national support, to be honest with you, I would not want to be a President of this country.

“I want to be President of a united and indivisible country called Nigeria. Call it core north, core south or core whatever, wherever they are, let them support me because we too have supported them,” he said.

On consensus candidate, the former Senate President said that would be left for the aspirants and the party to decide.

“Whatever we do, the most important thing is that whoever emerges should emerge through a process that is fair, transparent and credible; whether it is by consensus or by primaries,” he said"

PoliticsLagos Gov Ticket: Ambode’s Wife Fails To Change Tinubu’s Mind by happney65(op): 6:47am On Sep 19, 2018
A last-minute effort by the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Bolanle Ambode, to save her husband’s job was said to have hit a brick wall on Tuesday.

It was gathered that Bolanle, who followed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to Osun State on Monday for the Tuesday’s All Progressives Congress’ mega rally for the state governorship candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, waylaid the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and tried to pacify him to change his mind.

Sources told our correspondents that her efforts did not yield any result as Tinubu was said to have “received her cordially and joked with her.”

“At a point, she became emotional despite the fact that many party leaders were there. But Asiwaju (Tinubu) did not give her the answer she desired. He merely treated her with courtesy,” one of the sources said.

The governor and Tinubu have been in the news in the past few days over the second term bid of Ambode.

Tinubu had refused to back Ambode’s second term ambition despite pleas by notable people in the state and the country.

Instead, the Tinubu-led Mandate Movement in the Lagos APC had backed Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who obtained his form last Tuesday.

The chairmen of the 57 councils had also declared support for Sanwo-Olu.

Sawo-Olu, a former commissioner in the state on Sunday formally declared his intention to vie for the Lagos State governorship ticket of the APC, promising to restore the glory of the state.

Notable APC leaders in the state, who were either allies of Tinubu or his followers, were at the declaration.

Meanwhile, sources said the Mandate group had started wooing another aspirant on the APC platform, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

It was gathered that Tinubu’s men wanted Hamzat, who is from the Lagos East like Ambode, to become the deputy governor with a promise that he would supervise a ministry and also nominate two commissioners into the cabinet.

Hamzat campaign team could not be reached on Tuesday for comment.

PSP operators declare support for Sanwo-Olu

In a related development, the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria on Tuesday made public its intention to support Sanwo-Olu.

The Lagos APC will hold its primary next week to decide who will be its governorship candidate in 2019 election among the incumbent Ambode, Sanwo-Olu, and Hamzat.

At a press conference in their Mushin office on Tuesday, the PSP operators said they believed that Sanwo-Olu, if voted in to replace Ambode, would restore their jobs which the incumbent administration took and gave to a foreign company, Visionscape.

The Vice Chairman of the association, Mr David Oriyomi, who addressed journalists alongside other executive members of AWAM, said the decision to back Sanwo-Olu, was in the interest of about 25,000 workers engaged by the 350 PSP operators, who had lost their jobs.

Oriyomi said the association boasts of no fewer than 150,000 voters at the grassroots, who would be mobilised to help Sanwo-Olu to achieve his governorship ambition.

He expressed the confidence that not only would the emergence of Sanwo-Olu as the next governor of Lagos State help to revive the business of the PSP operators, it would also restore Lagos to its former clean state.

He said, “This injustice should not be allowed to continue, the health and well-being of residents of Lagos must be paramount to all.

“It is, therefore, with great hope that we welcome the emergence of Sanwo-Olu, who has promised to run a participatory government.

“For this reason, we, the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, have decided to align ourselves with Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and pledge our full support to him in the forthcoming elections.

“This decision was taken in the best interest of the environment. We remain committed to servicing the great residents of the centre of excellence. It is time to clean up our city; we did it before, we are able and willing to actualise the Lagos of our dreams.

“We did not just choose to support Sanwo-Olu; we looked at the aspirants. We have the incumbent, we have Femi Hamzat and we have Sanwo-Olu.

“The incumbent, we have seen what he has to offer when it comes to waste management in the state – there is nothing he can offer us.

“Then Hamzat, we have not heard much from his camp; but Sanwo-Olu named the issue of the environment as one of the critical issues that he is going to tackle,” Oriyomi said"

PoliticsOffa Robbery: Court Summons Saraki Over Fresh Criminal Complaint by happney65(op): 11:54pm On Sep 17, 2018
"A Grade I Area Court in Aco Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to serve a summons on the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to compel him to face a criminal complaint initiated against him by a private lawyer in respect of the bloody bank robbery in which many died in Offa, Kwara State, earlier this year.

The criminal complaint was initiated by an Abuja-based lawyer and rights activist, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, whose lawyer told the court on Monday that the IGP had given assurance that the necessary court papers would be served on the Senate President.

The police had said their investigations linked Saraki to the kingpin of the robbery operation.

The Senate President is the sole defendant in the criminal complaint initiated by the private lawyer.

The criminal complaint marked, CR/196/2018, was said to have been initiated by Ojaomo under Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

It sought Saraki to be summoned for allegedly ignoring police invitation to answer to an allegation involving the investigation of the suspects of the Offa robbery.

The complaint stated that Saraki’s alleged refusal to honour the invitation amounted to obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful responsibility.

This alleged conduct, it said, was an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law.

The judge handling the case at the Grade 1 Area Court, Aco Estate, Lugbe, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Abdullahi Garuba Ogbede, had, on September 10 this year, ordered the issuance of a summons on Idris following Saraki’s absence from court.

On Monday, the complainant’s lawyer, Mr E. S. Marcus, said he was informed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, identified as Mahmoud, that the IGP had directed the legal unit to ensure the prompt service of the court papers on Saraki before the next hearing date of October 3, 2018.

He said, “The defendant is not in court. At the last date, the court issued a witness summons on the IGP to come and show cause why the police failed to effect service of the criminal summons, warrant of arrest and other processes on the defendant.

“The witness summons was served on the Nigeria Police Force by the court’s registry.

“However, we received a call from DSP Mahmoud of the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, that the matter has been assigned by the IGP to a particular unit of the NPF to effect the service of the summons on the defendant and arrest him.”

Marcus explained in court on Monday that his client, who was supposed to bear the responsibility of serving Saraki with the complaint, had to resort to seeking the IGP’s involvement in accordance with Section 122 of the ACJA, when it became difficult for him to serve the Senate President.

According to the lawyer, the Inspector-General of Police is required, under the law, to either produce the defendant in court or attend court to explain why the defendant was absent.

He then applied to the court to grant a short adjournment to enable the police to serve the processes on Saraki.

The judge, Ogbede, granted Marcus’ request and adjourned the case till October 3.

The criminal complaint against the Senate President read, “Criminal complaint brought pursuant to Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. Please, cause a summons for a direct criminal complaint on the defendant on the following terms:

“That you, Dr Bukola Saraki, on or about the 24th day of July, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did refuse to honour the invitation of the Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force to report at the police headquarters in FCT, Abuja to answer to an allegation involving the investigation of some criminal suspects involved in a case which the Nigeria Police Force is currently investigating, thereby obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful responsibility.

“You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law, whereas, the complainant is praying the court to charge the defendant accordingly.”

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has said voters will not be allowed to go inside polling booths with their telephones, cameras and any other devices that can record images.

He said this on Monday in Osogbo at the stakeholders’ forum organised ahead of Saturday election.

The INEC chairman said this would help to curb the issue of vote-buying and vote-selling which he described as a new strategy adopted by politicians to rig elections.

He said voters would not be barred from using their devices at the polling units but would not be allowed to hold their cameras and telephones from the moment they are issued with ballot papers until they cast their marked ballots inside the ballot boxes.
