At the last minute, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, dropped out of the presidential candidate. Our correspondent learnt that Abubakar decided not to participate because President Muhammadu Buhari had also decided to shun the debate. Only three candidates participated in the debate, including presidential candidates of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Oby Ezekwesili; Young Progressives Party, Kingsley Moghalu, and Alliance for New Nigeria, Fela Durotoye. https://punchng.com/2019debate-why-atiku-shunned-presidential-debate/ |
Sheikh Dr. Abdullahi Bala Lau, National Chairman of Jama’atul Izalatul Bidi’a Waikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), is alleged to have received two vehicles from Nasir el-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, after he directed members of the sect to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming presidential elections. At a colloquium organised to commemorate the marriage ceremony of two daughters of the Sheikh held in Yola, the Adamawa State capital last week, the cleric had expressed his support for Buhari. The two vehicles were said to have been brought to his residence located at 23, N'Djamena Crescent, Wuse 11, opposite Gombe Jewel Hotel in Abuja, two days after he made the declaration. The Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep 2017 model and a red Space Wagon Sienna 2017 model were said to have been brought from Kaduna for the religious leader. When SaharaReporters visited the house in Abuja, the two vehicles without number plates were sighted in the compound. Lau had hinged the association’s support for the Buhari administration on its achievements in fighting corruption, commitment in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency, the reform and diversification of the economy, and agriculture revolution. "The people have endorsed the performance of the Buhari administration at the centre during the past three-and-a-half years and that is why we have decided to tell all our members in Nigeria to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari and all other candidates working with him,” he had said at the event. According to the Islamic leader, the Buhari-led government is moving in the right direction and the Izala movement has put its seal of approval on it. The Imam, who emphasised Buhari’s personal qualities and humble background, warned against dishonest people who had embarked on propaganda and incitement to thwart the President’s re-election. “Buhari is a honest person. He has kept the public trust. He was a Governor and Minister of Petroleum. He was a General Officer Commanding and Military Head of State. He chaired the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF). He ended all these assignments without an oil well or personal fortune. Come out and vote for him,” he told the crowd. Meanwhile the decision by Lau to align the sect to Buhari's reelection bid has led to division within the movement, as a group led by the Deputy National Leader, Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigachikun, has called on the members of movement to vote for Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Rigachikun, who spoke to BBC Hausa Service, said Atiku has contributed immensely to Islam and built more than 300 mosques across the country. He also claimed that he had been associating with Atiku for the past 30 years. “Whenever we approach him on issues to do with Islam, or Islam-related matters, either to sponsor symposiums, to build schools for Islamic activities, to help the underprivileged or to make money available for the day-to-day activities of Islamic leaders, Atiku has never turned down our request in all the over 30 years that I have been close to him," he said. The Izalah movement is one of the largest Islamic societies in Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. http://saharareporters.com/2019/01/18/el-rufai-buys-two-suvs-sheikh-who-directed-his-sect-members-vote-buhari |

"The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State. Announcing his suspension on Thursday, the party accused the governor of “gross anti-party” activities. Okorocha was seen campaigning for his son-in-law, a member of Action Alliance, during an APC campaign rally in the state. The governor did this without recourse to Aisha Buhari, the wife of the president, who was present at the rally. A faction of the party in the state that suspended Okorocha said a committee was set up to investigate him and claimed his actions are in line with Article 21 (B) I-VI of the APC Constitution (October 2014 as amended). The Imo State Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, Prince Marcellinus Nlemigbo, said that a letter conveying the message has been sent to the National Chairman of the party. “A letter by the Imo State chapter of the APC signed by the chairman conveyed the suspension to the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole. We regretted that Okorocha who is the party’s candidate for Imo West Senatorial District has vowed to undermine the APC and its electoral interest," he said. Nlemigbo added that the decision was to save the party from the “machinations of Okorocha”, with the expulsion giving him time so that he can fully move to his party, the Action Alliance (AA).” http://saharareporters.com/2019/01/18/imo-apc-suspends-okorocha |
"Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday led a song filled with chants of ‘thief’ against Senate President Bukola Saraki, who was a member of his party until July 2018 when he defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). During his speech at the APC presidential rally in Lokoja, capital of Kogi State, Oshiomhole appeared to be set on a lengthy dig at Atiku, only for him to switch to Saraki in a flash. “I challenge Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of PDP. We will publish the record. In his election in 20011, Atiku lost in Adamawa; he lost all the three senatorial seats,” he began, before going on to explain how three senators lost an election in 2015 only for Atiku to insist otherwise. “President Obasanjo called me; I was in Labour; I was the real opposition. And he said, ‘listen, now listen, o ti to (it is enough)… ole, ole (theft, theft) will kill you. My own comrade, I need you to say… because when they talk of rigging and manipulation, they are the sustenance of rigging. “One of the losers wrote a congratulatory letter to the man who won, but because Atiku felt, how can he be Vice-President and he lost his own state, he paid N100 million each to those who won for them to accept defeat. That is how those who lost, they smuggled them into victory; those who won, they paid them to accept defeat. “Is that a man who will speak of honesty? Is that a man who can speak to integrity? Is that a man who can speak to character? “Atiku wants to become Chairman of INEC, his Vice President wants to become Inspector General of Police. Their campaign Director-General is the man who presided over the liquidation of Societe Generale Bank after they had collected the deposits of very poor people. Bukola Saraki.” At this point the crowd chanted ole (thief). Oshiomhole joined in, saying: “Bukola Saraki, ole (thief)." Oshiomhole then broke into a song during which he chants “Bukola Saraki” and the crowd respond with "ole" (thief). At some point, he mixed it with “PDP”, to which the crowd also responded with “ole” (thief)" http://saharareporters.com/2019/01/17/%E2%80%98bukola-thief-saraki-thief%E2%80%99-%E2%80%94-oshiomhole-leads-anti-saraki-song-apc-rally |
"President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he did not comment on the allegations of bribery against Kano State Governor Umar Ganduje simply because the Kano State House of Assembly has waded into the matter. He also noted that he has not been to Kano State since the video alleging Ganduje as taking bribes from contractors was leaked. “Hopefully, by the time I go to Kano for my campaign, I will have the information,” Buhari said. Buhari spoke at the Town Hall Meeting where the 2019 presidential candidates and their running mates have been scheduled to respond to questions about their manifestos. Moderated by Kadaria Ahmed, the live event is hashtagged #NGThe Candidates." https://punchng.com/town-hall-meeting-why-i-havent-spoken-on-ganduje-buhari/?fbclid=IwAR306rjK8xI6swBOYMtYfsqjdkDLlG6xuGMjH3ohPHaHIPm-6vnOoHBSm54 |
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is a "truly wicked man", Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said. Oshiomhole said this on Wednesday while speaking at the APC presidential campaign rally currently going on in Lokoja, capital of Kogi State. Oshiomhole made the utterance after castigating Atiku Abubkar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as a corrupt former Vice President. "The two of the [Obasanjo and Atiku] were fighting... Obasanjo said Atiku was a thief. Atiku said 'If I'm a thief, you were the one who taught me'. Do you remember?" Oshiomhole asked the crowd. "What did Obasanjo say? Obasanjo said, however wicked people think he is — and he is truly wicked, because I was President of NLC and I know what he tried to put to Labour..." http://saharareporters.com/2019/01/16/breaking-obasanjo-truly-wicked-says-oshiomhole |

"The All Progressives Congress has insisted that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, must face his corruption trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The ruling party said the noise being made by the Peoples Democratic Party and some elements in the bar was an indication of unholy alliance to frustrate the fight against corruption. This was contained in an address by the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Lanre Issa-Onilu, on Monday. “Following the notice of the charges preferred against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, by the Code of Conduct Bureau at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, the Peoples Democratic Party has been on overdrive vituperating over an issue that should at best be left to the judiciary to resolve,” Issa-Onilu said. Continuing, he noted, “While we would not want to be lured into discussing issues that are presently before the courts and for which any respectable political party hoping to hold positions of responsibility should restrain itself, we regret to suggest that the PDP’s attempt to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that there is a political motive behind the allegation brought against the CJN might itself be indicative of some unholy alliances. “The likely affinity existing between the PDP and a section of the judiciary is further accentuated by the nonappearance of Justice Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Monday, in line with the suggestions made by the PDP governors from the South-South on Sunday. “Are Nigerians expected to see this as a mere coincidence? Is the PDP and their governors acting a script? Haven’t we missed an opportunity to show confidence in an institution headed by the CJN? “This becomes more worrisome, knowing that the PDP campaigns have been receiving cold shoulders everywhere they have gone to and it has become apparent the party and its presidential candidate are facing imminent defeat in the February 2019 elections and may be searching for some unorthodox means of forcing itself on the Nigerian people. “If this were not so, the PDP should, before coming to these distracting conclusions, have taken cognisance of the facts of the allegations made against the CJN and his admission to the facts so stated. “The only logical conclusion in the circumstance is that realising the refusal of Nigerians to allow the deception of the PDP con them into returning the party to power, the opposition party has alongside some pliable human rights activists devised a plot to distract the APC and indeed the good people of Nigeria from addressing the very important issues on the APC’s manifesto in the electioneering process.” Issa-Onilu claimed that the APC has also noticed “the very dangerous attempt to designate the CJN’s arraignment along ethnic and religious lines, thereby trying to heat up the polity by evoking primordial sentiment which would do the country no good.” “This is an ungodly ploy when we consider that the CJN was an officer of the federation rather than that of any region,” he warned. “We therefore urge all Nigerians of good conscience to caution the PDP as the country is bigger than any political party or the interest it represents, and nothing should stop the country’s steady march into sustainable democratic governance.” “In our earlier statement on the CJN’s CCT trial, we had noted the PDP’s shocking and innate proclivity to defend cases of corruption anytime it arises. “The call by the PDP South-South Governors for the CJN to boycott the CCT trial further cements our position. Let it be reiterated that nobody– no matter how highly placed — should be above the laws of the land. “We wish to put on record that the virulent attack that has come from the PDP in the wake of the trial of the CJN over alleged false asset declaration is particularly worrisome and suspicious when the PDP has in fact called for the removal of virtually all heads of government’s arms, particularly the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission and Inspector General of the Police over frivolous issues. “While the will not be drawn into debates on the legality and sponsored conspiracies of the CCT trial, we insist that our democratic and constitutional institutions must be allowed to operate without interference and undue pressure from partisan and sundry interests as being done by the PDP and its cronies. “The CCT trial is a legal matter, let the law run its course. The CJN must go through the instrumentalities of the courts, more importantly as an institution he represents. Indeed, this is the true test of our constitution, rule of law and will deepen democracy. “Where there are contestations on institutional procedures, we must allow same institutions perform their functions unhindered, autocorrect if necessary and set good precedence on future matters. “This is the only way we can build strong and lasting institutions,” Issa-Onilu concluded" https://punchng.com/breaking-onnoghen-must-face-trial-apc-insists/ |

"Josep Borrell, Spanish Foreign Minister, has said US President Donald Trump suggested his country should build a wall across the Sahara desert as part of efforts to address migration from Africa. According to Borrell, who was said to have made the remarks on Tuesday during a lunch at Club Siglo XXI in Madrid, while referring to the increase in the number of African youth migrants, Trump made the remark recently. An audio file obtained by CNN noted that the minister impersonated Trump’s voice as he said: "You need to build a wall around the Sahara," referring to Trump’s statement. Borrell said when Trump was asked if he was aware of the size of the Sahara desert, the latter replied: “It can't be bigger than our border with Mexico.” Borrell continued: "Well, yes, it is way bigger than the border with Mexico, and in any case it wouldn't be very useful to do that." Although he declined further comments on the issue, a spokesman for the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed Borrell's comments to CNN. CNN's request for comments from the White House was not responded to" http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/20/trump-suggested-building-wall-across-sahara-desert-block-migration-africa |
