Nigeria has been added to a blacklist of nations that pose global threat because of leniency as it relates to controlling financial activities of terrorists, as well as money laundering. The European Commission also added Saudi Arabia, Panama, and other jurisdictions to the blacklist, the EU executive said on Wednesday. According to Reuters, low sanctions against money laundering and financing terrorism, insufficient cooperation with the EU and lack of transparency regarding company beneficiaries, constitute the criteria used to blacklist countries. Being on the blacklist does not only constitute reputational damage, it will also complicate financial relations with the EU, as the bloc’s banks will have to carry out additional checks on payments involving entities from listed jurisdictions. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/13/bad-news-anti-corruption-war-eu-adds-nigeria-dirty-money-blacklist?fbclid=IwAR2EX1IPs0wUvncoSa_y3XW9YMtCbgpfFMVNUD-yatPiq4DUhOcH7RZUE48 |

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed signing any pact not to run for a second term as mere speculation. Speaking on a television programme hosted by Channels Television, the governorship candidate said his victory at the polls was a done deal. Sanwo-Olu said the celebration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the turn-out of supporters and loyalists at campaigns was misplaced as crowds do not translate to votes. He insisted that the PDP could not assess his popularity by the crowd at its campaigns. He said: "I think we need to understand that crowd during political rallies is not always the same as voting on election days. I can confirm to you that crowd is not the same as actual voting. A lot happens on the election days. Mobilisation of voters, for example, is a critical element of election. So, I’ll advise that the PDP should not jubilate over what they perceive as a large turnout at the Kano rally. "I don’t know where the idea of pact or agreement came from. But I can tell you for a fact that there is nothing of such. I didn’t sign a deal with anyone. At any rate, there is only one term of four years on the INEC form, so it will be up to the people of Lagos State to determine whether I deserve another term based on my performance.” When asked if he would run the state independent of external influence, Sanwo-Olu said he was an adult, old enough to take decisions and be his “own man”. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/13/no-pact-signed-over-second-term-says-sanwo-olu?fbclid=IwAR0KHOcRDrJlCJcwVqyywm6UrsbctwqyA9peXs_uSGHY6qu4rG9EfUACZ-c |

Former US President Bill Clinton has canceled his trip to Nigeria ahead of Saturday's general elections, saying the visit could be "politicized." Clinton was scheduled to visit the capital, Abuja, this week alongside Baroness Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. The planned trip was facilitated by the Kofi Annan Foundation and the National Peace Committee (NPC). "Over the course of the last several days, and after various conversations with the different stakeholders, it's become apparent that President Clinton's visit to Nigeria has the potential to be politicized in a way that is not in line with the goals of the Committee. Therefore, he will not be traveling to Abuja," Clinton's spokesman Angel Ureña said in a statement. Clinton, according to the statement, would continue to support the NPC 's work toward peaceful and fair elections in Nigeria. He had been set to deliver a keynote speech at a ceremony for the signing of a peace accord by presidential candidates. Clinton will speak later this week with President Muhammadu Buhari, who is standing for re-election, and his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar, his spokesman said. It is expected to be a keenly contested election. Two electoral commission offices housing voting materials were burned down within a week, the country's electoral body said Sunday. "This is a crucial time in Nigeria, and President Clinton is hopeful that the election's outcome reflects the will of the Nigerian people," his spokesman said. The NPC in an earlier statement announcing Clinton's visit said it reached out to him and others to ensure peaceful elections and a non-violent transfer of power in the West African nation. More than 200 people were killed and about 40,000 displaced in violence after Nigeria's 2011 presidential elections, when then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan defeated Buhari at the polls https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/11/africa/bill-clinton-nigeria-elections-intl/index.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=fbCNNi&utm_term=link&utm_content=2019-02-11T19%3A01%3A25&fbclid=IwAR3pP6TB61j2ocNwUqrRP0vR-tE35BEmNybVqK3PK8CGZ1sg8CoyiqFbDyg |
Bola Tinubu, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Monday described Senate President Bukola Saraki with some unpalatable words. Speaking at the APC presidential rally in Ilorin, Kwara State, Tinubu, in Yoruba language loosely translated to English, said Saraki had been stealing from his people and betraying them for his own selfish interests. “He is a traitor… someone who takes his people’s belongings and sells them off,” Tinubu said. “He is self-centred. Bukola Saraki is the one I’m talking about. He can’t beat you, or will he?” Tinubu said he was earnestly looking forward to the 2019 elections, saying: “I know, this is the celebration of your freedom; this is the celebration of the falling of the berlin wall. This is the celebration of the end to oligarchy…” After Ilorin, the APC campaign train moved to Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State, for a rally that turned out the most dramatic so far since the campaign started touring the country last month. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/11/apc-rally-tinubu-describes-saraki-self-centred-traitor-thief?fbclid=IwAR2B1i6pdugNHXc8lKYw-UeHVjIKOIwUvYYU2elvpWXQJc244GP5i6mJI50 |

Dozens of people have collapsed at the ongoing presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State. It was a sea of red-capped individuals, as thousands of party faithful converged on the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. The stadium is filled beyond capacity, and some persons have fainted as a result of suffocation. At the time of this report, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate and other party leaders, were still on their way to the stadium. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/10/breaking-dozens-slump-atikus-overcrowded-campaign-rally-kano?fbclid=IwAR1FQtA5mwCADROeMUPfyTTI-rjRmQKgYI_QdA_XmeDzPsznxY5qpOxY1Yk |
Senator representing Bayelsa East constituency, Ben Murray-Bruce, has condemned those he called beneficiaries of a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, who now insult him. He was reacting to the statement by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, at the All Progressives Congress presidential rally in Lagos, where he threw a jibe at Obasanjo that President Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t have time to write letters. He said, “I have told them that you don’t have time to write letters; you get the job done.” In reaction, Murray-Bruce on his Twitter handle said, “President Olusegun Obasanjo is an icon. He ended the Nigerian Civil War. The first military head of state to voluntarily handed over to an elected President in Africa. He stabilised the democracy we are now enjoying. It is rather unfortunate that the beneficiaries now insult him!” https://punchng.com/its-unfortunate-that-obasanjos-beneficiaries-now-insult-him-murray-bruce-reacts/?fbclid=IwAR3fYHsjGM1fA4QMmVHoFYhFG5Qd-QllKu0QVVoYn9GwWxTRYjufMv2ifm0 |

Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on Nigerians to “dump Obasanjo in the dustbin”. He also accused Obasanjo of being behind the greatest election rigging in the history of the country. He stated this in his remarks at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Saturday, during the APC presidential campaign rally. However, while accusing Obasanjo of rigging the election that brought Yar’Adua into power, he also made a gaffe, stating that the election was conducted in 2003, instead of 2007. His words: “Obasanjo came and we taught them that there is no other way for business evolution and revolution without steady power supply. I introduced independent power generation. What did he do? He and Atiku opposed it. I went to court and Osinbajo was my lawyer. I won in court and we started generating 300MW; the first state to do it. Imagine 1999, if Nigeria had made that dedication to electricity generation, you will not see Dunlop, Michelin move out of this country. Look at our roads; look at the vehicular density of Lagos alone. And they call one man Obi somewhere in one party. He said he will create jobs. He has not been able to tell us how we can make brake pads, wheel spanner on our own for those vehicles. And he said, maybe we should extend the port to Benin Republic, so that we can clear our cargo faster. I call that one ‘container economy, Obi China’. “Who sent Michelin out of this country? PDP right? Who got rid of Dunlop Manufacturing Company? Who sent Siemens out of this country? They want to take that money and the business of this country, back to their friends in Europe and America again. “I want to sympathise with our friends, our foreign observers. You’re welcome. Observe what you need to observe, write your report in peace and go home. This is our democracy. America is still questioning its own democracy. We’re watching CNN; Trump and China, Trump and Russia. Interference in the largest African democracy is what we are saying. G-20, in year 2003, asked Umaru Shehu Yar’Adua of blessed memory, ‘what are you going to do with the election in Nigeria?’ He said: ‘The election that brought me as president of this country is flawed and I will reform it’. Is that not correct? Who conducted that election? Obasanjo is the greatest election rigger in this country. He’s an expired meat. Dump him in the dustbin. Forget Obasanjo.” Also present at the event were President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Adams Oshiomhole, the APC National Chairman, as well as governors and other party leaders. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/09/obasanjo-expired-milk-dump-him-dustbin-tinubu-tells-nigerians?fbclid=IwAR06NxKPLW9tEVrvwaWyEL8ul_Uwk3_xge3mmocCYcoTPJFKOezsqNFGflg |

The Nigerian government says only Nigerian pilots are in the employ of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. That was the position of Laolu Akande, the Vice President’s spokesman, on Thursday, in his reaction to the claim by a group of aviation professionals that foreigners were the pilots flying the Vice President. The group, the Aviation Round Table (ART), had issued a statement on Wednesday, saying: “We are deeply concerned about the management of security of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is embarrassing to see the Vice President of Nigeria being flown by a foreign pilot whether contracted or chartered in a Nigerian Police helicopter as noticed in a previous flight during this campaign season.” SEE ALSO However, the Vice President has denied being flown by foreigners. A tweet by Akande on Thursday read: “For the record: all the (plane or chopper) pilots that fly the Vice President are Nigerians. Ignore any insinuations or suggestions to the contrary.” http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/07/osinbajo-replies-aviation-professionals-only-nigerian-pilots-fly-me?fbclid=IwAR17ooUMfzhuL4JzoSlrMnnlWPiQ-Yb0VgymOLykhd79JNLbJDmjCZhGi-s |

Barely a day after receiving criticisms for endorsing and lifting up the hand of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, President Muhammadu Buhari stirred up controversy again on Saturday when he openly endorsed Gombe Central Senator, Danjuma Goje, who is accused of fraud to the tune of N5bn. Buhari raised up Goje’s hand shortly after delivering his speech at an All Progressives Congress rally in Gombe. The President had earlier told his supporters that he had delivered on his promise to fight corruption, diversify the economy and improve on the security of the nation. After raising up the hand of the APC governorship candidate, Alhaji Muhammad Yahaya, the President subsequently raised up Goje’s hand. Goje was first arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2011 and has remained in court ever since. In April, 2018 the EFCC re-arraigned him alongside a former Executive Chairman, State University Basic Education Board, Gombe State, Alhaji Aliyu El-Nafaty, S.M. Dokoro, and the ex-governor’s cousin, Alhaji Sabo Tumu. The defendants are facing charges before the Federal High Court in Gombe. The re-arraignment is coming after an amendment to the charges. Goje was accused of obtaining a loan of N5bn from Access Bank with a forged document, purporting that the Gombe State House of Assembly approved the loan. The EFCC alleged that the ex-governor forged the signature of the Clerk of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Shehu Atiku, to facilitate the loan. According to the EFCC, though Goje claimed that the N5bn was for infrastructural projects, the former governor allegedly diverted the money. The money was alleged to have been diverted and laundered between November 2, 2010 and February 24, 2011. The EFCC claimed that, for instance, Goje transferred N21.8m to his cousin, Tumu, “for the supply of food items to the Gombe State Government House when you knew or reasonably ought to know that the contract for the said food supplies awarded to the said Alhaji Sabo Mohammed Tumu, was not the outcome of any competitive bidding process in accordance with the Due Process Guidelines contained in the due process circular reference No. GO/CS/S/MEM/VII/358 dated 25th February, 2008, adopted by your administration.” https://punchng.com/buhari-asks-supporters-to-re-elect-senator-facing-n5bn-corruption-charge/?fbclid=IwAR0T60s4LEJ_Zh1cOme9Sn7insuJ3Qyp8pwuuQ2_KU3wF7PGA-Z81vjgKN0 |
