In an effort to alleviate hunger and lower the skyrocketing cost of food in the nation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) revealed on Tuesday that it will provide Nigerians access to food items that have been forfeited. Among the goods confiscated by Service agents and awarded to the federal government by the court are rice, noodles, and groundnut oil. In a press release on Tuesday, the Service’s National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, stated that the decision was made in reaction to the nation’s pressing problems, including the skyrocketing prices of basic food supplies. He stated that the goods will be distributed fairly throughout Customs Areas of Operations across the country after being approved for consumption by the appropriate authorities and ordinary Nigerians. Maiwada added that there will be a strong commitment to openness, equity, and public safety in the manner in which the procedures for disposing of the goods will be shared via NCS formations around the country. “In response to the critical challenges of food security and the soaring costs of essential food items in Nigeria, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, reaffirmed his commitment to advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda. This commitment is deeply rooted in the NCS’s core mandate of serving the best interests of the Nigerian people, thereby fostering economic stability and prosperity,” he disclosed. https://www.newsveo.com/breaking-news/breaking-customs-to-distribute-seized-food-items-to-nigerians/

Due to their involvement in internet fraud, two Obafemi Awolowo University undergraduates have been found guilty and sentenced to varying jail terms by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Four other individuals have also been found guilty. This was revealed in a statement posted on the EFCC’s official X handle on Tuesday. The statement claims that Gbolahan Adesina and Perekebena Micah, the undergraduates, were docketed before Federal High Court, Osogbo Judge Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel on a single-count distinct charge. The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan saw the arraignment of the four other individuals, Sholagbade Olanrewaju, Qudus Baba, Akinpelu Opeyemi, and John Adeyemo, on separate counts, before Justices O.A. Adetujoye and S.O. Adeyemi. According to the statement, Adesinna and Micah are two of the eleven OAU undergraduates who were arraigned before Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel on November 6, 2023. All of the students entered not guilty pleas to the accusations that were given to them, and the cases were postponed until after the trial. The statement read, “Upon their arraignment on November 6, 2023, they all pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them and the cases were adjourned for trial. “At the resumed proceeding of the matter on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, prosecution counsel, Umar Abiso informed the court that Adesina and Micah were ready to change their pleas. Consequently, they were re-arraigned and pleaded “guilty” when the amended charges were read to them. “Also, four other convicts pleaded “guilty” to the one count charge filed against them by the EFCC.” “After listening to the counsels, Justice Ayo-Emmanuel convicted and sentenced Adesina and Micah to one-year imprisonment each without an option of fine, while Olanrewaju, Atanda, Opeyemi, and Adeyemo bagged two weeks of community service each.” The statement further stated that the convicts were mandated to return all things found on them to the Federal Government of Nigeria, as well as to restitute their numerous victims. https://www.newsveo.com/nigeria/court-imprisons-two-oau-students-and-four-others/

According to a CAF official who spoke to AFP on Tuesday, the Confederation of African Football has decided in principle that Morocco will host the 2025 Cup of Nations in July and August of that year. The next Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in January and February, but organizers are running out of time to hold a qualifying competition since CAF president Patrice Motsepe declined to confirm the dates earlier this month. But scheduling it for June and July of the following year would conflict with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup, which is scheduled to be in North America. There was “an agreement in principle between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held during the summer, more precisely in July and August” of 2025, a competitions committee member told AFP on Monday while speaking on the condition of anonymity. “This agreement was found with the support of FIFA after talks that began several months ago and which intensified during the last edition which finished this month in Ivory Coast,” the source stated. The dates that are currently being suggested are July 20–August 16–17, 2025.The dates of the last two Africa Cup of Nations were both rescheduled. The Cameroon-hosted 2021 competition took place in January and February of 2022. The most recent event was postponed due to weather concerns, originally slated for June and July of last year. The draw for the preliminary round of the tournament holds today. https://www.newsveo.com/breaking-news/2025-afcon-will-take-place-in-morocco-in-july-and-august-caf/

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved a bill for the nation’s state police to be established for second reading. The bill, which has 14 sponsors including Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker of the house, aims to change the appropriate sections of the 1999 constitution to allow states to create their own law enforcement agencies. In place of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Kalu encouraged members to put Nigerians’ safety above political aspirations during Tuesday’s plenary session of the House. Lawmakers took turns contributing to the debate on the House floor. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) also spoke, stating that upholding peace and order is the responsibility of the police. Despite having a population of nearly 200 million, we have fewer than 400,000 police officers. Nigeria’s internal security issues ought to be addressed by the establishment of the State Police. https://www.newsveo.com/breaking-news/breaking-reps-approve-state-police-bill-for-second-reading/

Ethiopia is the first nation in the world to forbid the import of any vehicle that is not electrically driven, breaking a tradition in which less developed nations served as dumping grounds for used automobiles from other countries. Whereas the European Union plans to outlaw the sale of automobiles with internal combustion engines starting in 2035, Ethiopia is around ten years ahead of schedule. Speaking, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport & Logistics, Alemu Sime said, “A decision has been made that automobiles cannot enter Ethiopia unless they are electric ones.” The Ministry of Transport and Logistics in Ethiopia has just made the decision to exclusively permit the entry of electric vehicles, following an estimated $6 billion in fossil fuel imports in the previous year. The dearth of affordable foreign currency in the nation, as stated by Minister Alemu Sime, is one of the factors behind this extreme decision. This makes importing gasoline and diesel challenging because of financial constraints. Ethiopia has recently made significant investments in its energy infrastructure at the same time. For instance, the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa, which was partially commissioned on February 20, 2022, with the commissioning of the first two turbines with a combined capacity of 750 megawatts, is scheduled to be inaugurated soon. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said that he will prolong the wage award payments to employees and retirees in the state by an additional six months. As we all know, the brain is undoubtedly the most important organ of the body. The brain controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that regulates our body. When fatal accidents occur, even if the other parts of the body is fully healed but the patient is brain dead, he or she will be pronounced dead by the doctors as the other organs of the body cannot function properly without the brain signaling to them. This is an indication that conscious efforts should always be made to avoid doing things that may damage the brain. However, the reverse is the case in the modern world we live in because we are always caught up in doing things that are dangerous to our brain. Here is a list of some of the habits that are slowly damaging the brain Not Getting Enough Sleep Every human being should compulsorily get 7-8 hours of sleep daily, this way the brain can rest and recover from the activities of the previous day. Lack of sleep often leads to memory loss, mood swing, depression, irritability and also cognitive designs. All of these things mentioned causes great damage to the brain. Studies have shown that lack of sleep can also increase the risk of dementia. The sad reality of dementia is that it does not only affect the aged, it also, in some cases, affects the young. This is a wake up call for you to always get enough sleep in order to keep your brain in the best shape. Negative Energy Are you one to hold a grudge, get angry easily or focusing on other negative emotions that just often keeps you in a pessimistic mood? Then you should change this as fast as possible by focusing majorly on positive emotions instead. According to research negative emotions have been linked to cognitive decline. Also, research has also revealed that individuals who dwell on negative emotions had more amyloid and tau deposits in their brain, and these two are the biological markers of Alzheimer’s disease.
