The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom yesterday dissolved the Benue State Executive Council.

Ortom announced the dissolution during the Valedictory Session of the State Executive Council meeting held at the EXCO Hall of the Benue Peoples House Makurdi, the state capital.

He used the occasion to appreciate members of the council for their stewardship in the last four years.

Ortom appreciated Council members for their commitment to duty and for supporting him during trying period that the state went through.

“Everything that has a beginning must have an end. It has been a challenging assignment but you supported me and the Deputy Governor to overcome the challenges”, he stated.

Governor Ortom prayed God to continue to strengthen them in their endeavours, expressing the hope that some of the outgoing council members might be reappointed in the new cabinet which is expected to be constituted in July.

Ortom said he enjoyed a cordial working relationship with Engr. Benson Abounu, stressing that he would still pick Abounu as Deputy if he had the opportunity to be Governor ten more times.

He also acknowledged what he described as selfless contributions and commitment of Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Ijohor, SAN, Head of Service, Mrs. Veronica Onyeke and the Chief of Staff, Hon. Terwase Orbunde.

Deputy Governor, Engr Abounu said since the Governor nominated him to serve as his Deputy in 2014, they had not had a quarrel even once, expressing optimism that the same amicable relationship would be witnessed in the next four years.

He described Governor Ortom as a man of honour who has immense love for his people and maintains tremendous respect for friendship; an attribute he said was worthy of emulation.

Some Commissioners and Advisers from the three Senatorial Zones of the state who spoke on behalf of their colleagues thanked Governor Ortom for the opportunity given them to serve.

They described the Governor as a selfless leader who has uncommon passion for the interest of his people, and prayed God to continue to guide him as he begins another term of office this week.

A Nigerian, Philip Undie, has filed a suit seeking an order of the Federal High Court in Abuja to declare the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, unfit to be elected as a member or Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Mr Gbajabiamila was convicted for fraud and dishonesty in the United States of America in 2007.

Osun: "There is no fight between my successor Governor Oyetola and myself"
The immediate past Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has urged idle people to find other useful engagement instead of peddling rumours of non-existing rift between him and his successor, Gboyega Oyetola.
He dispelled rumours of any frosty relationship between him and Oyetola, urging citizens in the state to disregard any information to that effect.

Aregbesola, who made the remark after his 62nd birthday lecture held in his honour in Osogbo at the weekend, said the present government was as a result of the uncommon and unwavered commitment of his resolve to ensure the entrenchment of good governance in Osun State.

“The current government was as a result of our unfettered commitment, result and effort. We cannot but continue to pray for the progress of what we laboured and strived for.

“Oyetola is my senior brother who is senior to me in all ramifications. He has achieved a lot in his personal life before having a stint at all in government. So, there’s nothing meaningful in me having any issue with him. Let the detractors know that there can only be peace within us and the state,” he said.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says the Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI has destroyed bandits’ camp and neutralised dozens of bandits in air strikes it conducted at Doumbourou forest in Zamfara.

Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who announced this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said the operation was conducted on Saturday.

”The operation was executed yesterday, May 25, pursuant to human intelligence (HUMINT) reports indicating that some locations within the forest were being used by the bandits as hideouts, including a group of huts belonging to a notorious kingpin named ‘Dangote’.


“Accordingly, following confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), an Alpha Jet aircraft was detailed to attack the bandits’ camp leading to the destruction of their structures and neutralisation of close to two dozen bandits,” he said.

Daramola added that the NAF, working in consonance with other security agencies, would sustain its operations to flush bandits out of the North-West of the country.

Chelsea are facing another major blow ahead of the Europa League final with N’Golo Kante set to miss the showdown with Arsenal due to a knee injury.

Kante twisted his knee in training on Saturday and the World Cup winner’s absence in Baku on Wednesday night will leave manager Maurizio Sarri down to the bare bones in central midfield.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was already out after rupturing his left achilles tendon in Chelsea’s friendly against New England Revolution and will be out for around six months.

Kante was on course to recover from a hamstring injury which had kept him out of Chelsea’s last two games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Leicester in time to take his place in Azerbaijan.

He picked up the hamstring issue in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Watford, limping off at Stamford Bridge after just 10 minutes.

Kante’s setback means Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley will be Sarri’s only fit central midfielders for the final.

Kante left Saturday’s session in obvious discomfort and was being assessed by Chelsea’s medical staff on Sunday to discover the severity of the injury.

Initial fears are that Kante faces a longer spell on the sidelines.

Chelsea leave for Baku on Monday and losing Kante will mean Sarri is deprived of the services of four members of his squad against Arsenal.

As well as Kante and Loftus-Cheek, Antonio Rudiger and Callum Hudson-Odoi will also be missing.
