Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers, on Wednesday, invaded the female hostel of the University of Uyo, Town campus, in Akwa Ibom State, and stole undisclosed amounts of money and other belongings.

The incident, which occurred in the W6 Hostel, came few days after some female students were attacked by unidentified persons in one of the hostels.

Southern City News gathered that the hoodlums went from room to room to dispossessing their hapless victims of their belongings.


A campus source, who pleaded not to be mentioned, told our correspondent in Uyo that though no life was lost during the operation, some of the students sustained minor injuries while trying to resist the invaders.

The source said, “Some hoodlums broke into the W6 Hostel at the University of Uyo, town campus around midnight when the students were sleeping.

“They stole property such as phones, laptops, jewellery and cash. No life was lost, but some of the affected students sustained minor injuries.


“We also learnt that some female students were attacked the previous day in one of the hostels.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the incident, said the Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed, had ordered the deployment of policemen in all the hostels.

According to him, the CP has held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eniefiok Essien, and the management with a view to finding a lasting solution to the frequent invasion of the hostels by armed robbers.



Macdon stated, “The command is aware of the incident that occurred at the University of Uyo, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of officers to all the hostels on the campus.

“He has met with the vice-chancellor of the university and other management staff in an attempt to find lasting solutions to the problem.

Prosecutors have announced they will NOT file criminal charges against soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for an alleged sexual assault from 2009.

According to TMZ, Kathryn Mayorga claims Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room back in 2009.

She claims she met CR7 at Rain Nightclub in the Palms hotel in June 2009 and he invited her up to his penthouse suite to party and hot tub. There are photos of Mayorga and Ronaldo hanging out at the nightclub together that evening.


She had initially filed a police report describing the alleged crime — but didn’t identify Ronaldo by name.

Mayorga sued Ronaldo claiming she later accepted a $375,000 payment in exchange for her silence — but recently announced she wants that agreement voided and went to cops to pursue a criminal case against Ronaldo.

In court documents, Mayorga described the alleged attack … saying while changing her clothes in the penthouse suite, “Ronaldo entered the bathroom, exposed his erect penis and asked [her] to perform MouthAction.”

Mayorga claimed she refused and wanted to leave — but Ronaldo “pulled [her] into a bedroom and onto a bed and attempted to engage in sexual intercourse.”

Mayorga claims she tried to fight Ronaldo off — but he turned her onto her side and sodomized her while she screamed “no, no, no.”

Ronaldo had adamantly denied the allegations — and said, “Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.”

Now, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office has made a decision to NOT prosecute — claiming “the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Prosecutors described the situation in detail …

“On June 13, 2009, a female victim (‘V’) placed a call to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and reported that she had been the victim of sexual assault. Members of law enforcement responded to her location to take a crime report. Police transported V to the hospital so that a sexual assault examination could be conducted.”

“A short time later, sexual assault detectives arrived at the hospital and made contact with V. Although she knew who the person was who assaulted her, V refused to identify him or disclose where the crime occurred. As a result, the police were unable to follow investigative protocols for sexual assault cases or to conduct any meaningful investigation. Without knowing the identity of the perpetrator or the location of the crime, detectives were unable to search for and impound vital forensic evidence. In addition, video evidence, showing interactions between the victim and perpetrator before and after the alleged crime, was lost. The criminal investigation was closed.”

“V and Cristiano Ronaldo, through their respective attorneys, eventually reached a civil settlement related to this matter in 2010. For the next eight years, law enforcement heard nothing more from V regarding the crime or the perpetrator.”

“On August 28, 2018, V contacted the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, asking that her sexual assault investigation be reopened, naming Cristiano Ronaldo as the offender. In spite of the passage of over nine years, Metro investigated her allegations.”

“A Request for Prosecution was submitted to the District Attorney’s Office on July 8, 2019. Based upon a review of the information presented at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming.

Two students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Saturday poured an insecticide, Sniper, on each other.

The female students, who are in part-one in the institution, were said to have engaged in a disagreement before attacking themselves with Sniper.

It was learnt that the actions of the students, who reside in Mozambique Hall, caused commotion at the university.

It was also gathered that the incident caused fear among students who reside near the room where the incident happened.

One of the residents of the hall, who did not want to be named, said trouble started when one of the roommates accused her mate of infesting the room with bedbugs.

She said, “While one of the students poured the Sniper on her colleague’s face, the other targeted her opponent’s mouth.”

“We initially thought they were joking. All of a sudden, one of them poured Sniper on the other.

“We all shouted that it was unfair to do that but she said she was trying to kill bedbugs. The other one didn’t take it lightly; she started shouting and attempted to retaliate but we blocked her. We later reported the case to the hall warden and the case was resolved.

“When we got to the hostel, she started feeling pains and she suddenly took the Sniper and poured it on her opponent’s body too. One of us rushed to the school porter and she made calls. The two of them were then taken to the health centre.”

When contacted, OAU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, said a disagreement between two students led to the incident.

He, however, added that the matter had been resolved and the two students treated at the institution’s health centre.

“One of them wanted to use it (Sniper), the other disagreed. That was the genesis of the matter.

“It was a minor disagreement involving two students over the use of Sniper. It has been resolved. The two students were treated at our health centre here.

“Right now, I’m in Mozambique Hall. The matter has been resolved. No casualty at all,” he said. (PUNCH)

A three-storey building on Monday collapsed in Jos, the Plateau State capital with many trapped under the wreckage.

The residential building located at Seriki Street in the state capital was said to have caved in around 4:30 p.m.

Some occupants of the building said to have been completed a few years ago were believed to be inside, when it suddenly came down, raising fears about their safety.

According to Punch, The State Chairman of the Action Democratic Congress, Mr Sabiu Musa, who resides close to the building on Monday said rescue workers had arrived the scene and were working to save those trapped in the collapsed building.

Musa said, “We just had an unfortunate incident on our street where a three-storey building collapsed. Some people were inside the building when it came down and I don’t know if they are still alive or dead.

“But right now, people have arrived in the area and are making efforts to rescue those trapped in the building.”

Ahead of next Saturday’s elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has created additional 57,023 voting points to address the large number of voters which now stands at 84 million.

Information obtained by The PUNCH showed that the voting points would be carved out of the existing 119, 973 polling units nationwide.
This comes barely a month after the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said more voting units would not be created.

Yakubu had said last month, “On polling units, the commission wishes to assure the media that there is no change in the number of polling units and voting points used for the 2015 general elections and the 2016 Area Council elections in the FCT.
“Any insinuation that new polling units, voting points or voting points are being created by the commission is utterly baseless and should be disregarded.”

However, it was learnt that following a high-powered meeting by INEC national commissioners and other relevant stakeholders, it was decided that 57, 023 new voting points had to be created.

It was learnt that the move had become necessary because the number of registered voters had risen by 15 million since 2015 and as thus the old arrangement was not feasible.

The additional voting points would also ensure that voting is done in record time in order to allow for quick collation of results which will be expected to take longer due to the high number of political parties which has since risen to 91.

The 2015 Presidential election had 14 candidates but 2019 has a record 72.
The PUNCH had reported that the collation and announcement of results which would require the announcement of each political party one after the other, might take as long as five days and INEC was doing everything possible to ease the process.

A national commissioner at INEC said, “We have established 57,023 across the country because the number of voters has increased. We are creating more voting points and not more polling units.”

The commissioner explained that a voting point is created when a polling unit has more than 500 registered voters.
He said, “A voting point is derived from a polling unit. When a polling unit has more than 500 registered voters, a voting point can be carved out of it and set aside but it is not completely independent. Ideally, a polling unit should not have more than 750 voters.”
When asked why INEC changed its mind, the commissioner said, “Once a polling unit has more than 750 voters, it is best to devolve a new voting point out of it because if the entire 750 turn up for election, they will not be able to complete accreditation and voting by 2pm.
“In 2015, there were 69 million voters but now we have 84 million. So, that accounts for the increase in the number of voting points.

“As I said, these voting points are like a sub-polling unit. For instance, if Gaskiya Primary School is a polling unit but has 1, 200 registered voters, we can create a voting point out of that unit, to make it two to allow for a better and faster voting process. So, at the end, all the results from that unit would be collated as one.”
When contacted, the INEC National Commissioner for Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Festus Okoye, confirmed the creation of more voting points.

He said it had become necessary due to the large number of voters.

Okoye said, “We have created more because the number of voters has risen to 84 million. INEC regulation 3c states that voting points are created out of polling units based on multiples of 500 and a maximum of 750 registered voters or as may otherwise be determined by the commission.
“We cannot use the 2015 template because the total number of registered voters was 69 million but now it is 84 million. If we use the same template, it means we have not learnt any lessons at all.”

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, on Sunday said that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos would no longer be removed from office.

Tinubu, who spoke after a peace meeting was brokered by the APC leadership in the state, said the State House of Assembly had agreed to sheathe its sword.
The former governor said the executive and the legislative arms of government in the state had resolved to work together in the interest of the state.

“In the last one week, there was noise about the conflict between the executive and the House of Assembly. It is of great concern to all of us and particularly, what Lagos represents across the country.

“We have been able to look into the source of the various conflicts, which is not uncommon in politics. What is the genesis of those problems? We are one big family and as a big family, you will have some disagreement.

“As leaders of the party, we have looked into that. We have looked into areas where we have to compromise, discuss, build the institutions and encourage them to really do what is right.
“We have resolved that there would be no question of impeachment in Lagos State. Let the two arms of government communicate and continue to respect one another and build consensus and understanding. That is all about politics,” Tinubu said.

The APC leader said that allowing the conflict to fester would have dire consequences not just for the state, but also the entire country.
The Assembly had last Monday threatened to remove Ambode from office for alleged gross misconduct, as regards the 2019 budget.

The lawmakers had given the governor seven days to defend himself, failing which ,he would be removed.
The announcement had been greeted with protests by some civil rights groups, some of which threatened to shut down the Assembly if Ambode was removed.

The peace talk, which held at the Lagos House, Marina, was attended by Ambode; his deputy, Dr Idiat Adebule; the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa; Deputy Speaker, Wasiu Eshinlokun; Majority Leader, Sinai Agunbiade; Chief Whip, Rotimi Abiru, among other principal officers of the Assembly.
Others in attendance were all the members of the Governors’ Advisory Council, the highest decision making organ of the APC in the state; the governorship candidate of the party in the state, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Femi Hamzat, among others.

Adeboye leads thanksgiving service for Osinbajo


In Lagos, Adeboye led the congregation at the headquarters of the church at Ebute Metta, Lagos to thank God for saving Osinbajo in a helicopter crash on Saturday.

Adeboye, during the service, recalled that a word of prophecy came during the church’s Holy Ghost Service on Friday that no matter how hard the enemy would try, there would be no mourning in “our families this year.”

Addressing the congregation, he stated, “Would you please join me in thanking God that there is no mourning in our family this morning.”

On Friday night, he had said, “The Lord has asked me to tell someone tonight that it doesn’t matter what the enemy might try, there would be no mourning in your family this year.”

He asked the congregation to give glory to God for saving Osinbajo’s life.

According to Adeboye, the devil wanted to take Osinbajo’s life but God put the devil to shame.

He, therefore, asked the congregation to specially appreciate God on behalf of the Vice-President and all those onboard the ill-fated helicopter, for his supernatural protection, saying Nigeria would not mourn.

In his sermon, entitled, “Carriers of Glory,” Adeboye said for anybody to carry God’s glory, he must be a true child of God and live a life of holiness.

Taking his lesson from the book of Matthew 5: 14-15 in the Bible, he said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Adeboye added, “As a carrier of God’s glory, anywhere you arrive, darkness will automatically disappear. When God begins to use you, the glory belongs to God, so you must learn to always give glory to God. Do not take the glory to yourself because it is not yours, it belongs to God.”

Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has finally opened up on dating Yemi Osinbajo, saying money is not her driving force when going into a relationship.
She made this known while putting a fan in her place earlier today on Instagram.

Hoodlums suspected to be hired by the opposition, on Saturday, invaded the All Progressive Congress rally in Tungbobiri community in the Sagbama Local Government Area, killing one person and injuring 16 others.

The injured persons were reportedly stabbed while running away from the venue. The person shot dead was said to be an APC member. He was identified as Brave Embikoro.
The rally was for the APC senatorial candidate in Bayelsa West, Captain Karimu, at Tungbobiri community near Toru-Orua, Governor Seriake Dickson’s home town.

Some APC members alleged that the attack was sponsored by the PDP in retaliation of the incident which occurred during its rally in the Yenagoa Local Government Area.

The thugs disrupted the event as Karimu was about to deliver his speech.
The Secretary of the APC, Alabo Martins, in a statement, said, “A party member was killed in Bayelsa West senatorial campaign on Saturday in Tungbo Abiri.”

Host of this year’s Big Brother Naija reality show, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, has warned against potential housemates campaigning on social media.

The auditions held across eight cities of Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan, Enugu, Warri, Calabar and Benin on Friday and Saturday.
Ebuka, writing on his Instagram page, expressed his anger over applicants creating a buzz about auditioning.

“Like, are your followers the ones auditioning? Or you think if auditions were done on social media that wouldn’t have been specifically announced? I don’t get it.
“In fact you are probably even doing yourself more harm. A major element of Big Brother is secrecy and surprise but you think announcing your intentions or social media is a bright idea – toh,” he said.

One of the former housemates in the last edition, Teddy A, was quick to respond to Ebuka’s post.

“Please don’t tell them, they will learn the hard way. Why they solicit for votes on social media like it’s a requirement. Our people don’t know how to follow simple instructions. BBN audition discreet pass secret cult initiation,” Teddy A wrote.

According to him, the thousands of Nigerian youths that trooped to the audition centers of the Big Brother Naija show are wasting their time as the organizers of the show select people that have already carved a niche in their respective careers.

Seven persons have lost their lives while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries in separate road crashes in Bauchi State, Northern City News has learnt.

The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi Sector Command, Rilwan Suleiman, confirmed this in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday.
He, however, directed our correspondent to the Staff Officer in charge of rescue, Chadi Khamis, for details.
Khamis said two accidents happened at different locations in the state on January 28, 2019, at about the same time.

He said, “Two commercial vehicles, a Sharon car with number plate DNG 244 AM, and a Vectra car with number plate DRZ 598 XA, were involved in an accident at Zangoro village in the Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State on Monday, January 28, 2019, around 7.45pm.
“The accident was caused by excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver of one of the vehicles, which led to a head-on collision by the two vehicles.

“Nine people were involved in the accident; six of the passengers died on the spot, while one died at the hospital, and the other two were taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi for medical attention.”
Khamis added that the second accident happened close to the NNPC Mega Filling Station at Wuntin Dada in the Bauchi metropolis.

He said a J5 open van with number plate Bauchi 851 ZE was conveying a brand new tractor when the accident happened.

According to him, the driver of the J5, who was carrying two passengers and luggage beyond the vehicle’s limit, was driving out of Bauchi when he tried to wrongly overtake another vehicle.

“The driver of a Peugeot 308, who was coming into Bauchi, had a head-on collision with the J5, who was still on its lane after the wrongful overtaking. It happened around 7pm,” Khamis stated.
He added that the driver of the J5 broke his leg, while that of the Peugeot 308, who was alone in the vehicle, suffered no physical injury.
