There is a clear difference between malicious publication and criticism, and the law has a clear stand on these. Sometimes people make arguments based on sentiments, and end up misleading the masses.

Now, let's consider the bone of contention. Few days ago, two individuals, Kufre Carter and George Udom made malicious publications that created fear and panic among residents of the state. Take note, it was a deliberate attempt to incite violence and anarchy in the state, very different from criticism. It must be noted that since the outbreak of coronavirus, the World Health Organisation(WHO), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) and National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) sternly warned that no one should create panic through malicious publication and reportage of the pandemic.

While the latter lied that 9 commissioners in the state were receiving treatment secretly for covid-19, and that people should run away from the state if they must be alive. The former spread falsehood that many people in the state have died of covid-19 and are being hidden by the governor, and went ahead to call the governor names.

Now, people, even those I considered to be learned have wrongly interpreted their arrest over such malicious publications. They call it criticism. Malice has now been decorated with a royal robe to give them a platform for blind argument.

George Udom and others being detained are not working with NCDC, the body saddled with the responsibility of informing the Nigerian public on the pandemic. They are the ones announcing the number of cases from each state of the federation. Where did George Udom get the information from? He asked people to run away from the state, but remained in the same state he claimed is on fire.

In accordance with the law, the duo have been arraigned in court, and the law will decide their fate.
