Whats the proof that this is actually enugu, cos the last time I went there I seriously doubt this kind of mishap will happen given that all the roads and the drainage are in good shape. Anyway, maybe its actually as a result of the on-going construction in the area which affected a few houses. So sad and my heart goes out to the victims. The contractor should be blamed if this story is true

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) Monday in Abuja, said the trial of former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu for illegally operating foreign accounts while he was governor was not political.

A statement signed by the bureau's Head of Information, Miss Iyabo Akinwande, said Tinubu's trial was delayed in order to complete investigation. The bureau said investigation into the allegation had since been completed and the trial would begin tomorrow.

The bureau said: "It has no political undertone. The case was only put on hold because investigation was on going."

But Tinubu has faulted the claims by the bureau, saying his trial was being engineered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He told newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on his return from a foreign trip that he was, however, not perturbed by planned trial by the bureau on the allegation that he had foreign accounts while he was the governor of Lagos State, describing the bureau’s actions as politically motivated.

He said he was familiar with Nigeria’s political terrain and therefore would not be intimidated by the ruling PDP, which he alleged was behind the planned trial.

He described the appearance before the CCB as ill- timed and stressed that he was not going to lose any sleep over the matter, noting that the timing, several years after he left office, was enough indication that the ruling party was looking for something through which it could silence the opposition.

THISDAY gathered that Tinubu has put together seasoned legal practitioners to be led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, to defend him. The charge against him was filed in April 2007 before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Specifically, Tinubu was accused of operating 10 different foreign accounts while in office as governor contrary to Section 7 of the CCB and Tribunal Act, Cap 56 Laws of the Federation, 1990 and punishable under Section 23 (2) thereof as incorporated under paragraph 18, part I of the 5th Schedule to the 1999 Constitution.

He was said to have failed to declare the foreign bank accounts in the assets declaration form CCB-1 which he submitted to the CCB when he was elected governor.

Tinubu urged the ruling party to learn from the revolution in the Middle East, including Libya, where the 42year rule of Colonnel Maumar Ghadafi, was challenged by the people.

“I can just tell you that nothing will intimidate me, as a leader of opposition parties in Nigeria. I believe wholeheartedly in the tenets of constitutional democracy, and rule of law, and as a politician, I am used to be persecuted or tried.

“But they cannot induce any charge to silence the opposition in this country, the question of the rule of law, the question of dividing the judiciary, the question of the ruling party orchestrating allegation to silence opposition party, and the urge to continue to rule, without obeying the rule, does not bother me; we have seen the end of the Ghadafi’s authoritarian rule. This is all politics.com,” he said.

Fuel To Cost N195 Per Litre, Nlc Alerts !

The pump price of fuel may soon go  up from N65 per litre to N195 per litre, as part of moves by the Federal Government to remove oil subsidy.

But the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warned, on Friday, that it would ground all the sectors of the Nigerian economy if the government implemented the over 200 per cent proposed hike.

Also irked by what it described as the slow implementation of the N18, 000 minimum wage by state governments, labour will, on Thursday, stage a mass protest in Abuja.

NLC President Comrade Addulwahed Omar who spoke on the planned hike, said it was provocative  to contemplate such policy in the midst of poverty, mass unemployment and insecurity in the country.

In a statement entitled: “Increase of fuel prices by over 200 per cent,’ Comrade Omar said: “It may sound outlandish but despite the serious challenges we are facing in the country from grounding poverty and mass unemployment to serious security, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan is being goaded into increasing petrol price by over 200 per cent.

“In the midst of mass suffering despite our huge natural resources and income, it is provocative for the government to want to further increase the price of petrol. In fact, this will tantamount to cruel injustice against the Nigerian people.

“The primary motive of this planned price increase is the insatiable greed of some politicians to get more money to squander; they see an increase in fuel prices as an easy way to access more of the country’s wealth.

“There is also the calculation to render the new national minimum wage worthless by embarking on a hyper inflation-inducing project like the astronomical increase in prices of petroleum products.”

He added that the government’s  stereotype argument of the need to remove “subsidy” was the same trick played on the people by the General Ibrahim Babangida  regime in the 80s under the  Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP).

He said: “Apart from hyper inflation, the planned fuel price increase will further impoverish the Nigerian masses, force more factories to close down and engender mass unemployment”.

Omar said Nigerians had learnt from the so-called deregulation of kerosene and diesel noting that the deregulation of petrol would only lead to higher prices, non-availability of the commodity and its control by a cabal.

He said NLC, would resist any increase and called on all progressive organizations including the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and professional associations to join hands with labour  to defend the  interest of the  people.

Omar also raised the alarm over an alleged plot by the government to sack workers  in the name of reorganising and merging federal parastatals and agencies.

He said: “As we stated before, the labour movement will kick-start its campaigns to defend the Nigerian people by staging a rally and street procession in Abuja next Thursday 22nd  September 2011.”

He said the non-violent mass action tagged “Save the Nation Rally” would protest, among other issues, “government attempts to increase fuel prices, the privatization scam, the electricity tariff gambit, the slow implementation of the minimum wage by state governments and private employers and the plan by the
Federal Government to carry out mass sack of workers in the name of reorganizing and merging Federal agencies”.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency General Manager in charge of the media, Mr Wole Adamolekun was not available for comment on the alleged price hike.

However, a source in the regulatory agency told our correspondent that PPRA was not aware of any proposed pump price hike as at Thursday last week.

“I don’t know where you got your story from, the federal government has not issued any directive on that as of  (Thursday) the price remained as it is” the source stated.

The corpse of a jobless graduate, Michael Adigun, 26, has been found in front of an abandoned building at 48 in Eric Moore, Surulere, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, by a landlord in the area.The police at Bode Thomas Police Station said he was a victim of a money-making ritualist.

A suspect, Alfa Rafiu Sadu, 45, has been arrested.

The suspect and his accomplice, Saheed, who is on the run, allegedly killed Adigun and then cut off his palms.

Investigations revealed that the deceased left his Abule Egba home for Apapa to look for a job when he fell into the hands of his murderers.

The deceased, before his death, was staying with his elder brother, Pastor Blessing Adigun at 55, Sani Balogun Street, Abule Egba, Lagos.

Commenting on the death of his brother, Pastor Adigun said that he was an HND holder from the Universal College of Technology, Ile-Ife, Osun State, adding that he came to Lagos in search of job.

“He was a graduate of Universal College of Technology, Ile-Ife, Osun State and he had his HND certificate. He left home in the morning for a company in Apapa where he had applied for a job.

“It was while he was returning home that he was murdered. He was also an obedient young man. How he got into the hands of the murderers remains a mystery to us. We are thinking of how to take his corpse from the mortuary and bury him,” he said.

The suspect, who appeared confused, spoke to A.M.NEWS before he was transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for further investigation.

“We have received the case file and investigation has commenced. The suspect is also with us to assist us in our investigation,” a detective at Panti told A.M.NEWS yesterday.

OVERZEALOUS security aides attached to Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday threw caution to the wind, harassing journalists posted to the Governor's Office and threatening to beat them up over telephone handsets.

The governor’s aides, who have formed the habit of assaulting reporters, started with a correspondent from one of the Abuja-based newspapers, whom a State Security Service (SSS) office asked to leave the reception of the Governor's Office for his alleged refusal to cooperate with their attempt to discriminate against journalists.

Next to suffer a similar treatment Tuesday, last week, was the Champion correspondent, Mansur Oladunjoye, who was assaulted for daring to enter the governor’s banquet hall with a GSM handset.

An SSS operative had approached the reporter who was sending a text message to a senior official of the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) (names withheld, to seek his reaction to an allegation of fraud leveled against him by the residents of Arigbanla, on the outskirts of Lagos, who were protesting being short-changed in the distribution of relief materials.

But, the security agents who allegedly felt that the reporter should not have taken his phone into the venue of the yet-to-begin inauguration of the Housing Arbitration Committee, wrestled with him in their attempt to forcefully seize his phone.
The SSS operatives also detained another correspondent, as he rebuffed an attempt to force him out of the venue of an event.

The security agents threatened: “If you don’t come outside now, I assure you that you won’t attend another assignment in the State House again.”

This, however, led to the intervention of other reporters, including the Chairman, Governor’s Office Reporters’ Corps, Taiwo Olapade, who lamented the constant assault visited on newsmen assigned to cover the activities of the governor.

At yesterday’s visit of the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee to the Lagos House, Ikeja, despite the fact that reporters were mobilised by a government spokesman, Kunle Adesina, about an hour to the take-off of the event, they were, as usual, asked to drop their phones at the lobby, a directive all of them complied with.

A reporter with The Gurdian who pleaded with the SSS men to allow him record the proceedings of the visit with one of his phones, after handing over the other one, was asked to get out of the venue.

Further pleadings, however, enraged one of the security agents, more as he invited a policeman standing nearby to help him bundle out the reporter.

As expected, about 30 other journalists who witnessed the assault threatened to pull out. They were, however, rebuffed by all the SSS officials who told them to “go out, if you go out, will heaven fall?”

Fashola, on Tuesday at far-away Epe at the launching of 363-unit Sir Michael Otedola Housing Estate on his protocol list, admitted that the press had constantly been a viable intermediary between his government and the public.

FORMER military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has again, launched a tirade on ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. He vowed, at the weekend, not to cease fire over issues between him and Obasanjo, which he said were aimed at putting things in their right perspective for the sake of history.

Babangida challenged Obasanjo to come out and defend himself over the $16 billion spent on power project during the eight years of his administration.

He argued that available records from the Federal Ministry of Finance showed that about N18 trillion was shared among the three tiers of government during the Obasanjo administration and that “there is nothing to show for it”.

The ex-military president, who spoke through his media aide, Prince Kassim Afegbua, told Go and check your records, N18 trillion was shared among the three tiers of government during his tenure, according to the Ministry of Finance. It is not my record, you can go and confirm. They are there for everybody to see and there is nothing to show for it, that is what we are saying.”

He added that the issue of status of both two ex-presidents notwithstanding, saying “rather, history should be the main focus” and wondered why anybody should condemn the retired General.

He added: “Status has nothing to do with it, but it's all about history. Why are people condemning IBB? Because the man has been keeping quiet, people just haul all abuses at him.

“Everybody wants to blame all the halitosis in this country on him because people felt that the man is humble and will not react. They always want to blame him for everything negative and positive, it is not done. The position of history is different from what the man is.

“The man has children, tomorrow, somebody will say they called your father a fool, what did you do about it? So, we need to put issues in the proper perspective. We are not attacking Obasanjo, we are just stating the statistics and we challenge him to contradict the statistics, then we will know if we are wrong or right.”

Babangida during his 70th birthday celebration had, in an interview with journalists at his Hilltop residence in Minna, the Niger State capital, accused the Obasanjo administration of spending about $16 billion on power project without any positive result and that the government could not muster the courage to confront the challenges of the country.

The following day, Obasanjo reacted to the allegation, calling Babangida “a fool at 70”.

Ex-head Of State Named In Un House Bombing !


former Head of State has been linked with the Boko Haram terrorist organization. The former Nigerian leader who is a notable politician was manipulated by the combined team of Nigerian and Foreign Security Agencies investigating the bombing of the United Nation's house in Abuja as one of the major sponsors of the dastardly incident.

National Daily competent sources disclosed that lead covering the alleged involvement of the top shot in terrorism activities was blown during interrogation of some of the several suspects earlier arrested by the State Security Service (SSS).

“This latest discovery has baffled the Security Agencies who are testing the information for verification. However, if this information is proved to be right, the claim by the Federal Government that big time violence activities in the country are being sponsored by some eminent Nigerians would have been corroborated.”

It will be recalled that soon after the car bomb explosion during the nation's 50th Independence celebration at the Eagles Square, Abuja, the President Goodluck Jonathan stated that the Federal Government will unveil the disgruntled politicians behind the attempt to destabilise the country by causing incessant violence.

Again for the umpteenth time last week, President Jonathan angered by the recent UN House bombing which claimed about 23 lives, said that the government knows the sponsors of the spate of bomb blast in the country. He disclosed that government has uncovered what he described as “strong leads” to the terrorist and those behind them.

President Jonathan said he has been compelled to direct security agencies to begin a manhunt for the alleged sponsors, saying there would be no “sacred cows” in the “war against terror.”

The President gave the assurance his administration is fully determined and has the capacity to deal with all threats and Agents of instability who continue to test the patience of the nation and its democratic institution and leadership.

“As President and Chief Security Officer of the nation, I will employ every means and instruments at my disposal to secure this nation against forces of evil which seek to divide and sabotage our country,” Jonathan said, adding:

“There shall be no sacred cows in our efforts to exposes, contain and defeat this network of terror. I have directed the review of our national security architecture to lay greater emphasis on intelligence and citizens' participation in security surveillance.”

Modus operandi

National Daily learned that one of the aides of the ex-Head of State was detected to be the link between chieftains of Boko Haram and his principal. He was alleged to have been named by one of the arrested suspects who went ahead to disclose even more vital information about the Islamic fundamentalist sects secret dealings with the former number one citizen who is from the Northern parts of the country.

“The statements of the suspect during interrogation have been so far very revealing. He talked about how they were always meeting with one of the aides of a former Head of State to discuss the strategy for another bombing operation. Apart from providing them with privileged state intelligence, he said the big man use to give his Aide some money to give to important members of the Boko Haram group as his own contribution to “fight the cause of Allah,” our source said.

The State Security Service, United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) investigations have so far discovered that the Boko Haram Islamic sect members did not act alone in their godless undertaking to destroy lives and properties in the country. They were said to have acted with the tacit support and connivance of several notable personalities from the North, especially those with political antecedent.

Agents of terror uncovered

“The Federal Government will deal with these violent Nigerians if their culpability is finally established. It has now been revealed that the Boko Haram group is not being sponsored by the former Head of State alone. There are many others who also attend to their financial and logistic needs. They are agents of instability masquerading as political and religious leaders hiding under Boko Haram to foment trouble,” our source said, adding:

“It is an irony that these disgruntled elements will parade themselves as patriots in the day time only to transform into their real colours in the darkness. This country will not move forward unless the unjust elements is made to pay a commiserate prize for their evil deeds.”

National Daily sources disclosed that the security agencies have forwarded primary reports on its finding to the presidency for further instruction. The investigator stating the arrest of two prime suspects, Babagana Ismail (a.k.a Abu Summaya) and Babagana Mali (a.k.a Bulama) however outlined what they have done so far to track down the wanted ring leader of the Boko Haram Mamman Nur. They gave the Federal government some vital details on the involvement of the former Head of State and notable Nigerians from the North in acts of terrorism and proceeded to suggest the next line of action.

“The security agencies are waiting for the Federal Government to give approval to some of its request to enable them mop up their investigations. At the top of this request is for an explicit permition of the president to enable them interrogates notable individuals including a former Head of State on their role in the recent UN House bombing. However, the federal government seem to be studying request and the security implication to the country before acting on it,” our source said.

Notable Nigerian politicians have also allegedly penetrates the security agencies and act as source of Intelligence gathering to the Boko Haram sect. They get useful information from their minions in the security system and pass to the Boko Haram for operational safety.

Meanwhile, a cable released last week confirmed National Daily's earlier report that some of the country's security operatives may be sabotaging the efforts of the federal government to tame the menace of Boko Haram violent Islamic sect.

Top strategy

The report indicates that the State Security Service and Northern Traditional System had a mutual agreement for secretive release and nontribal of terrorism suspects from the region.

The alleged agreement provided that terrorism suspects from the region would be released to a carefully selected group of traditional rulers and Imams shortly after arrest.

The cable with reference ID: 08ABUJA538 was sent to the US Department by a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Robin Rene Sanders on March 20, 2008.

According to Ambassador Sander's report: “In late January, the Sultan of Sokoto (Nigeria's pre-eminent traditional ruler and communal leader of Nigeria's 70 million Muslims) told Political Officer (Pol Off) that the Sultanate in concert with the 13 Emirates of the North is “quietly” working to leverage influence on the region's Islamic leadership to combat rising extremism and radicalization of Muslim Youths. A member of the Sultan's Inner Circle told Pol Off the SSS Director (General) allegedly gave the Sultan his assurance that the SSS would not legally pursue the suspects agreed to take them and “reform their ways.”

The cable alleged that in some cases suspects were allegedly released despite being caught with explosives, arms and ammunition, or linked to the al-Qaeda. Furthermore, the cable said that 12 suspects arrested and detained by the SSS in October 2007 for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks were released at different times in January and February 2008. Another United States cable alleged that some of the suspects were later implicated in bombings and attacks claimed by Boko Haram.

“The Pol Off spoke January 21 and again March 16, with Kaduna and Kano based Imams who had been contacted by the SSS and entreated to serve as sureties for the 12 individuals noted above.”

Following the anxiety over their alleged collaboration with indications has emerged that global intelligence agencies especially in United States and Britain have placed some top Nigerian politicians and opinion leaders on a watch-list of terrorist sponsors based on the August 26 bomb blast at the United Nations House in Abuja which reportedly claimed no fewer than 23 lives.

Anticipated shake-up

Meanwhile, the security hiccup in the country may lead to a major shake-up in the command structure. The imminent change of guards is necessary to flush out suspected Boko Haram agents in the service, improve on the nation's porous security situation and a positive image for the country.

Those who may be sent packing include the Director-General of SSS, Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief Marshall Oluseyi Petirin and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ola Sa'ad Ibrahim though he has only a year to retire from service.

Chief of Army Staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika may also be fired though he has about two years left in the service just as Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Umar may leave his three years duration in service expired.
