Crime › Folashade Hides Cocaine In Bedsheets : Says ‘i Have Six Children To Feed’ by HighChief4(op): 4:13pm On Aug 16, 2011
mother-of-six, Folashade, 47, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for trafficking 2.250kg of cocaine.

Folashade showed the ingenuity of a criminal mind by hiding the drug inside the bedsheets she brought from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

She was arrested alongside two other suspected Nigerian drug traffickers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos by NDLEA operatives.

The other suspects, Opara Uche, 39, and Chukwuma Longinus, 26, were caught with 1.575kg of cocaine and 500 grammes of methamphetamine respectively.

PUNCH METRO gathered that Folashade arrived from Sao Paulo in an Emirate flight with the cocaine concealed in bedsheets, which she put with other materials inside her luggage.

NDLEA spokesman, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said after the operatives had nearly passed the woman; the way the bedsheets were folded caught their attention.

“Based on that reasonable suspicion of the suspect, examination of her bag was made at the arrival hall of the airport and it subsequently revealed the 2.250kg of cocaine hidden inside four bed sheets in her luggage,” Ofoyeju said.

PUNCH METRO also discovered that Folashade, a native of Ekiti State, sells clothes at Balogun market, Lagos Island.

In her statement to the agency, she said that she had financial predicament and was therefore desperate to make money.

“I am a widow with six children. I regret my involvement in drug trafficking,” she said.

Ofoyeju said the apprehension of Folashade had added to the list of suspects caught on the Nigeria-Brazil route.

He said that Uche and Longinus were caught on their way out of the country.

According to him,Uche, who ingested 83 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.575kg escaped death by the whiskers. “While he was still excreting the drugs, he went berserk and was rushed to the hospital. After treatment he became normal and was discharged.”

Uche who has been living in Padova, Italy, for over nine years, told NDLEA operatives that poverty led him into drug trafficking.

“I have been living in Italy for over nine years and my living condition is poor, that was why I decided to deal in drugs. I thank God for surviving” he wrote in his statement.

Longinus, a technician, concealed 500 grammes of Methamphetamine in the metal handle of his luggage on his way to Malaysia. He also said that hardship made him to smuggle drugs.

Ofoyeju said that investigation by narcotic officials was ongoing, adding that the suspects would be charged to court soon.

He said that apart from Folashade, that would be charged for unlawful importation, the other suspects would face exportation charges.

The Chairman of the anti-drug Agency, Ahmadu Giade commended the officers for the arrests and seizures.

A statement signed by Ofoyeju quoted Giade as saying, “The prompt interception is commendable. Gradually drug trafficking cartels will be completely emasculated by our daily efforts of arrests and seizures. Members of the public must protect their precious lives by shunning drug trafficking.”

Politics › Mike Adenuga Gave Me Bribes In Naira And Dollars To Undervalue National Oil by HighChief4(op): 4:03pm On Aug 16, 2011
Mr. Jean-Charles Osuji a former deputy director of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has confessed to collecting bribe from one the world's richest men,Mike Adenuga, to undervalue National oil (Conoil) during his stint at the bureau. He made the admission in front of the senate ad hoc committee investigating the privatization and commercialization of government businesses from 1999 till date in Abuja this evening.

Mr. Osuji admitted that he collected money in dollars and Naira on on behalf Mallam Nasir El Rufai but failed to hand the money over to El-Rufai. According to him, he was fired as a result. He asked the senators to help reinstate him to his previous post.

Members of the committee asked him how he expects to be reinstated when he had admitted to accepting bribe.

However, the current director General of BPE ,Bolanle Onagoruwa, said that nobody asked Mr. Osuji to collect bribe. Senator Baabfemi Ojodu then asked if there was a query given to Mr. Osuji before he was fired but there was none.

The ongoing hearing has revealed how the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo abused the process of privatization to the benefit of friends and cronies of the president. Already, Mr. Obasanjo was accused of selling Delta Steel Company to Global Infrastructure instead of the winner of the bidding process, BUA Group.

Also controversial businessman Jimoh Ibrahim once faced charges forgery regarding the manner he bought NICON at a give away price. NICON was worth N50 billion but was sold for N1.05 billion. Afterwards, Mr. Ibrahim used equity in the company borrow N41 billion from Union Bank PLC. Recently, Obasanjo began writing a weekly column in Ibrahim's newspaper, National Mirror

In his appearance before the panel this week, Mallam Nasir El Rufai had accused Obasanjo of influencing the sales of government enterprises. He alleged that President Obasanjo and his deputy, Abubakar Atiku contacted him at several times to influence the sale of government companies to their cronies but that he turned them down each time.

“The president and I were always quarrelling over issues of privatisation,” Mallam El-Rufai said. “Each time I told him we have a process , that they should advise their friends to be the highest bidder.”

Mallam El-Rufai said that the privatization program failed when Obasanjo ignored his recommendation and appointed a ‘cranky businessman’, Mr. Julius Bala as his successor. He said his successor was only interested in making money.

The Senate committee is investigating the sale of over 100 government enterprises.

Nairaland General › Shock As Woman Gives Birth To Headless Baby by HighChief4(op): 3:57pm On Aug 16, 2011
The birth of new born babies is always heralded with joy but there was shock and disbelief as a woman gave birth to a baby without a head at the General Hospital in Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

PUNCH METRO gathered that the middle-aged woman (whose name medical workers refused to give) gave birth to the strange creature around 2pm on Thursday.

A medical official, who pleaded not to be named, said the woman was delivered of the strange creature through cesarean section.

According to him, the baby’s mother, who was still unconscious due to the sedation before the CS, did not see the creature which was quickly disposed in order to save the parents from embarrassment.

The father of the baby, the source said, was present at the delivery room and approved that the strange creature should be buried immediately.

The source told our correspondent on the telephone that the baby which had two bulging eyes had few strand of hair on his forehead.

“The baby did not have brains. His head was opened at the back and you can see mucus inside the head instead of brains. It was strange. Nobody in the hospital had seen such baby before,” he added.

Another source added the strange baby was very small at birth. He added that the delivery was abnormal as the fluid, which was drained from the mother’s body, was in excess of normal quantity.

The woman was said to have gone for series of scan in some private hospitals where she was told that she was going to give birth to a set of twins.

But it was gathered that the parents were hinted by the officials of the General Hospital, Iyin, that the woman was carrying only one foetus and it was headless.

The source said that they believed that the baby must have been deformed due to the effects of some drugs or herbs.

He said, “That is why we always ask pregnant women not to take any drugs unless they were prescribed by doctors. We can’t also rule it out that the deformity might have been caused by concoction. It is possible.

“But one aspect which does not have scientific backing but which could be the cause is the spiritual factor. Who knows, the baby could be from the spirit world.”

The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr. Wole Olugboji, who confiormed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone said the woman had earlier given birth to two normal babies before this incident.

“There was a woman who gave birth to anencephalic baby ( headless baby). The baby is dead as you might have been told but the woman is stable. It is one of the congenital malformation,” Olugboji said.

He explained that the deformity might have been as a result of drugs taken by the woman especially in the early months of the pregnancy or it could be as a result of chromosome disorder.

He advised pregnant women to always go for ante-natal and never to take drugs without doctors prescriptions.

Crime › Man Beats Son To Death. by HighChief4(op): 12:14pm On Aug 12, 2011
The proverbial saying, “Spare the rod and spoil the child” seems to have pushed Tunde Shitta, an auto mechanic, to beat his 11-year-old son, Toib, to death.

Our correspondent, who visited Tunde’s home at 33, Adeniyi Street, Itire, Lagos; learnt from neighbours that he had on many occassions flogged Toib, leaving him with scars.

A resident, who spoke to PUNCH METRO on the condition of anonymity, said Tunde visited his anger on the 11-year-old boy after his new wife reported that he (Toib) disobeyed her.

The neighbour said, “On that day, his stepmother sent him on an errand but he refused because he was sleepy. When the father returned, she reported Toib’s disobedience to him and he flogged him.

“His father hit his head with a stool and then he began to bleed until he died.”

PUNCH METRO gathered that after the incident, Tunde did not report to the police but went to bury Toib according to Islamic rites in his grandfather’s compound.

It was gathered that police were unaware of the incident until Toib’s biological mother who had divorced his father, went to Itire Police Division to report.

When our correspondent visited the division, a police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the case was under investigation.

He said, “We only got wind of the situation on Wednesday night when a woman came to report that her ex-husband had beat her son to death.

“The suspect however claimed that it was while he was beating his son that the latter fell and hit his head against a stool. Tunde said when his son started bleeding, he was rushed to a hospital but died on the way.

“So, the police are investigating in order to ascertain if the father actually hit him with a stool like the neighbours claimed or he fell and hit his head. The stool has even been recovered.”

Another neighbour, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described Tunde as a man, who was fond of beating up his wife and children.

He said, “Before Tunde divorced Toib’s mother, he used to beat her. On one occasion, he stabbed her in the head. That was when she decided to divorce him, leaving him with her four children.

“Toib was only 11 years old and was in primary six at Itire Primary School then. It is unfortunate that he was killed by his father.”

Another member of the community, who also craved anonymity, said Tunde should be charged for also trying to cover up the crime.

“After killing his son, Tunde instructed his three other children to clean up the crime scene. I can only imagine the sort of trauma they are going through. He then went ahead to bury Toib without filing a police report,” he said.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said the police were investigations the incident.

“The Lagos State Police Command is poised to reduce crime to its barest minimum in the state and we will make sure no criminal goes unpunished,” he said.

Celebrities › Police Hold On To Sam Loco’s Corpse . by HighChief4(op): 12:12pm On Aug 12, 2011
Imo State Police Command, yesterday, said it was determined to unravel what killed the ace actor, Mr. Sam Loco Efe, in Rapour Hotel, Owerri, last Sunday.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, who spoke to Vanguard, said: “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the ace Nollywood actor in his hotel room in Owerri.

The man attained a national and international status and we are duty bound to get all the details of the matter.”

Meanwhile, friends and family members of the Nollywood actor have decried the delay in releasing his corpse to them by the police.

A family member, yesterday told Vanguard, that the police had shifted the blame for the delay on logistics, adding that they were insisting on carrying out autopsy to ascertain the cause of the actor’s death.

Similarly, Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, has described Sam Loco’s death as “a great loss to the entertainment industry, Enugu State and Nigeria at large.”

Decrying the delay in releasing remains of the late entertainment icon, a family member, said: “It is not only against the Benin tradition to withhold the corpse, but importantly, it is taking a toll on our pockets, as some of us had to travel to Owerri in the bid to return to Benin with the corpse.”

They appealled to the police to release the corpse to enable the family plan a befitting burial for the deceased.
The Police in Owerri, according to Mr Ojukwu, have quizzed a number of people, including some staff of Rapour Hotel, noting that nobody has so far been indicted in the process.

Ojukwu said: “Honestly, we are working hard to unravel the cause of Sam Loco’s death. Nobody has so far been indicted in the matter, including the staff of Rapour Hotel.”

According to the CID boss, the police had planned the autopsy to ascertain the cause of the man’s death, adding that the personality involved and the circumstance(s) that led to his death makes autopsy imperative.

He expressed displeasure that some members of the late actor’s immediate family were angling for an early burial without the planned autopsy.

“Some members of Sam Loco’s family have started kicking against the autopsy. The first son and first daughter came with some Nollywood stars to the Command last Tuesday, to demand for an early burial,” the ACP said.

Explaining the need for the autopsy, he said, “The world was told that the man died in a hotel room. The world must be told what killed him. We rely on the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, to do this bit of the job for the police.”

Crime › London Riots: Nigerian Remanded For Looting . by HighChief4(op): 12:07pm On Aug 12, 2011
A Nigerian, Samson Adesina, was one of the looters remanded in prison custody yesterday over their roles in the riots, which have seized British major cities for days. The 23-year-old Adesina, an electrical engineering student, was caught by one of the 8,000 surveillance cameras strategically placed in London streets, stealing a flatscreen television at the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre during the riots.

Detectives used the cameras to trace him to his house and he was arrested.

The Tower Bridge Magistrate’s Court ordered that he be remanded in prison for a week for his action. With the development, he will miss his final examinations.

Adesina was not the only one traced through the cameras, arrested and arraigned.

British police, trying to catch instigators of the London riots, fought back with technology. They posted alleged rioters’ photos on their Flickr Photostream.

It was not hard to get the pictures with the 8,000 surveillance cameras watching the streets.

People in the United Kingdom are believed to be the most watched in the world.

By one estimate, there is one Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera for every 14 citizens. “Picture by picture, these criminals are being identified and arrested, and we will not let any phony concerns about human rights get in the way of the publication of these pictures and arrest of these individuals,” Prime Minister David Cameron said of the alleged perpetrators.

Police invited the public to call if they recognised suspected rioters whose images were posted on commercial and government websites. Captions on them were cryptic: “A female wearing a vest top who has just carried items from Richer Sounds,” or, “A male with grey hooded top and black body warmer about to enter Cash Plus in Thornton Heath.”

Asking for public help was just one extra step. Face-recognition technology is now inexpensive and widespread, and police could easily use it to match alleged looters’ pictures with party photos they might have posted on Facebook or Tumblr.com.
“A lot of these youths are wearing scarves to hide their faces but we’re not just reliant on that,” Martin Lazell, chairman of the Public CCTV Managers Association in London, said to the Christian Science Monitor. “We can identify people on how they walk, their height, their clothes, shoes, all manner of things.”

The possibility of mass unmasking has divided Britons and Americans alike. Many people, angered at the violence, are anxious to see the perpetrators caught. Others say the technology is only as good as the people who use it, and innocent people could be caught in legal nightmares.

On the website Hacker News, people were invited: “Help work out how to do facial recognition on the police photos.”
A user replied: “Please, do not do this. It compromises people’s right to privacy and will artificially incriminate people who may not be participating but are bystanding or trying to get home.”

Such arguments will rage as London police pursue one of the largest investigations in recent years.

“If there was ever a need for an evidence-based approach to a social problem, this is it,” said Simon Davies, head of a London group called Privacy International. “When Parliament meets to discuss the riots, it should demand evidence to back up any claim of blame, and it should institute a rigorous process to ensure that any response is justified, lawful, viable and fair.”

Meanwhile, Australian authorities have appointed a taskforce to investigate allegations that Nigerian scammers have sold a family’s Ballajura home without their knowledge, over a year after criminals sold a man’s house without his knowledge.

The couple had been working in Nigeria but when they recently returned to Perth, they discovered their home had been sold.
According to a statement released yesterday, the real estate agent involved told investigators that he received a phone call in February from a man claiming to be the owner, inquiring about the property.

Shortly after, the agent received an urgent request to sell the property as funds were needed for a business investment, later revealed to be a supposed petro-chemical project.

A joint taskforce, involving investigators from Consumer Protection, WA Police Major Fraud Squad and representatives of Landgate, has been set up to investigate the alleged real estate scam.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Davies of the Major Fraud Squad said it appears the scam originated in Nigeria and there are some similarities to the fraudulent sale of a Karrinyup property in June last year.

Wembley Downs retiree Roger Mildenhall was living in South Africa when he discovered scammers had sold his duplex for $485,000 and that his home on Hale Road was close to settlement.

“We are in the early stages of a full criminal investigation and examining computer, phone records and bank accounts,” Det Sen Sgt Davies said.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Anne Driscoll, has urged real estate and settlement agents to apply stringent measures to confirm the identity of absentee owners who wish to sell their properties remotely and ensure the person they are dealing with is the legitimate owner.

“It is essential that agents have rigorous procedures and a clear protocol in place to certify that the appropriate person has been identified as the real owner before providing the service,” Ms Driscoll said.

“It is critical that when an owner changes their contact details, that real estate agents send a confirmation to both the owner’s original and new addresses, using all forms of communication.

“This will confirm that the new details are correct and may alert the owner to any improper activity that is occurring.

“The general principles of ‘know your customer’ should apply at all times and the standard 100-point identity check used by banks and other institutions should be used as a minimum when dealing with remote clients.

“While identity fraud is always a risk, these are important prevention measures.”

Ms Driscoll said signatures should also be carefully checked against original signatures on file and any major differences should prompt further investigation.

“If agents have any doubts about the authenticity of a document, they should seek to have it independently verified by the issuing authority,” she said.

Landgate’s Registrar of Titles Bruce Roberts said he fully supported the increased measures to refine and improve identity verification by all organisations involved in the selling and transfer of property.

Consumer Protection is advising agents to make further inquiries regarding identity and seek additional evidence whenever there has been a recent change in address or other contact details. Signatures and initials should also be carefully checked as they may not closely match originals on file. Agents are advised to make further inquiries if the transaction originates from overseas, especially from countries known for scams, such as Nigeria or if there is a request for funds to be sent to a different bank account normally used by the client, or to offshore accounts including China.

It also advises agents to make additional inquiries if the sale is urgent as a result of funds being required for investment in a business venture, new email addresses being used are generic such as hotmail, yahoo or gmail.

“Ultimately, these steps are no guarantee against fraudulent conduct, but they will minimise the chances of these types of scams being successfully carried out,” Ms Driscoll said.

“Agents and lenders are reminded they are obliged to provide their services to existing clients with due care and skill under the Australian Consumer Law, for which a range of remedies are available.

“The Real Estate and Business Agents’ Code of Conduct also makes disciplinary action available to agents who fail to provide services with due care and skill.”

Ms Driscoll said there was no current finding the agents involved in this latest transaction had failed to act with due care and skill, but it serves as a timely reminder of agents’ obligations.

“Since the last successful scam was reported, an extensive Government and industry education campaign was conducted with the real estate and settlement agents, giving advice on how scams can be avoided,” she said.

“There is a need for us to continue this campaign and to implement identification verification procedures as part of standard industry practice. Consumer Protection, Landgate, REIWA and AIC will be working intensely and cooperatively in coming weeks to define additional practices in the industry that need to be put into action to minimise the likelihood of property fraud in the future.

“Consumer Protection will be communicating with all agents immediately, providing as much information and advice as possible to enable them to more readily detect these attempts at fraud.”

Shadow Planning Minister, John Hyde, said the allegations “were a mirror image” of the Karrinyup scam and the Government had clearly failed to close loopholes to prevent it.

“The Barnett Government has increased many Landgate fees for documents by over 35 per cent and yet, they haven’t ensured that our document systems are fraud-proofed,” he said.

Politics › Amosun’s Special Adviser Slaps Perm Sec. by HighChief4(op): 12:05pm On Aug 12, 2011
AFRESH crisis is brewing in the Ogun State civil service over the conduct of the Special Adviser on Lands to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Mrs. Segun Abiodun. Mrs. Abiodun, an architect and member of the state executive council, last week slapped the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Urban and Physical Planning, Mrs. O.O. Okuboyejo, in the presence of junior workers.

Mrs. Okuboyejo’s colleagues are already up in arms with the Amosun administration “because we will not allow this type of impunity and lawlessness become a state policy in Ogun State.

“Remember when Amosun himself tried to sack eight Permanent Secretaries, he called one of us a thief and our colleague replied him immediately that ‘Mr. Governor, I am not a thief and please, don’t refer to me like that again’. We will not allow the maltreatment of Mrs. Okuboyejo to go unchallenged,” said a Permanent Secretary.

It was learnt that Mrs. Abiodun stormed the office of the Bureau and directed Mrs. Okuboyejo to go and inspect some sites.
But, the Permanent Secretary, who recently had an accident and is still on crutches, told her that given her health condition, she won’t be able to embark on the inspection. Rather, she added that one of the directors in the Bureau would lead other officials on the inspection.

This response infuriated Mrs. Abiodun who told her that she must lead the inspection team because she (Okuboyejo) just returned from a workshop in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and it is not now that there is work for her to do that she would be dodging it.

While the Permanent Secretary was trying to explain to the Special Adviser that her condition would not allow her, she got angry and slapped her.

Said a source: “We had to rescue Mrs. Okuboyejo from her. It was an embarrassing situation. We have never had it so bad in Ogun State. For an appointee to have slapped a Permanent Secretary is the height of insult. If a Permanent Secretary could be slapped like that, then, what will they not do to middle-level officers like us?

“The situation was so bad that the Head of Service, Mrs. Iyabo Odulate, had to intervene to calm nerves. You know as a senior public service, Mrs. Odulate couldn’t have done anything but it was obvious from her countenance that she didn’t like what happened. You know in public service law, any public officer who engages in physical combat should be dismissed outrightly. We will see how this one will go”.

Politics › Alleged Forgery: Court Warns Ogun Pdp Chiefs by HighChief4(op): 12:54pm On Aug 11, 2011
An Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court has warned Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Bashorun Dayo Soremi and four others who are standing trial over alleged signature forgery to desist from making comments.

Others are Semiu Oladipo (Secretary), Adeja Olokun, Abiodun Taiwo and Aree Olufemi Dehinsilu.

They are accused of forging a signature to aid the substitution of the candidate for Remo Federal Constituency, Hon. Dave Salako.

The trial magistrate, Oyebola Oyewunmi who frowned at newspapers publications on the ongoing case credited to Soremi also rejected the documentary evidence which purportedly exonerated the accused from the case.

The Court, however, admitted in evidence a Video CD which contains proceedings of the January 6, 2011 PDP primaries where Salako was declared winner in the presence of the third accused (Olokun) who in his Police statement claimed he (Salako) did not participate in the contest.

At the resumed trial in Abuja, the Defence counsel, Ajibola Oluyede tendered a photocopy of the report of a forensic expert which he claimed emanated from the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon in Lagos.

Upon his request, the Court asked the Prosecution counsel, Simon Lough to produce the original copy which the Prosecution Witness two, a Chief Superintendent of Police Adebowale Williams said was in case file.

Bubble, however, burst when Oluyede tried to withdraw the duplicate, after the Court had received the original copy from the prosecution.

He argued that since the Court had already taken custody of the original copy, there was no need to leave the duplicate again.

But the magistrate expressed her reservations over the request. Oyewunmi observed that the duplicate tendered by the Defence counsel was inconsistent with the original copy presented by the Police in the open court.

She pointed out that the duplicate has five pages and attachment while the Police copy has only three pages with no attachment.

Besides, she said, the document was not a duly Certified True Copy (CTC) as required under Evidence Act.

The trial has been adjourned till August 30 for continuation.
