mallorca:And I watched the match Live at Bernabau, Messi was nowhere to be found, until Xavi was introduced |
The match should have been played in a swimming pool, so Barca players can dive very well. Madrid was better, the difference is that Barca took their chances while Madrid did not |

It is not certain that nine-year-old Kabirat Shitta will forget the death of her brother for a long time to come. She was a witness to the August 10, 2011 murder of her 11-year-old brother, Toib, by their mechanic father, Tunde. Kabirat recounted in graphic details how her father used a hose, a wooden stirrer and a stool to end Toib’s life. PUNCH METRO had, on August 12, published the story of Toib’s death. However, further investigations have revealed that Toib was killed in the presence of Kabirat and her younger brother, Muiz, 5. PUNCH METRO learnt that family members were putting pressure on Toib’s mother, Shakirat and sister, Kabirat, to change their statements. They are being told to change the statement to the police to show that Toib fell and died. But the girl told PUNCH METRO that her daddy killed her brother. She explained, “On August 10, Aunty Ayo, my father’s second wife, sent Toib to go and buy Indomie noodles. Toib was sleepy and reluctant to go. When my dad came back from work, Aunty Ayo reported to dad. “My daddy became angry and started beating Toib. He first punched him and Toib started to run around the house. “My father ran after him and then got a hose and started flogging him with it. I don’t know why he was so angry but he was just beating him. He also took a wooden stirrer and hit him with it. “As if the beating was not enough; my daddy picked a stool and hit Toib’s head with it. Immediately, Toib started to bleed and then died afterwards.” She said after the incident, Ayo and one of her father’s younger brothers cleaned up the blood in the room. “They said that I should assist them in cleaning up the blood. So, I used a rag to clean the blood. “Afterwards, one of my uncles told me to tell people that Toib fell and hit his head against a stool when my father was trying to flog him so that people will not say that my father killed Toib. But the truth is that my father hit Toib’s head with the stool,” Kabirat said. PUNCH METRO also gathered from a police source that Tunde, after killing his son, buried him immediately according to Islamic rites in his grandfather’s compound. The source added that Tunde did not report the incident to the police even though the Itire Police Division is less than 100 metres from his home located at 33 Adeniyi Street, Surulere. The source said, “Tunde did not report the incident to the police. When quizzed, he said it was because he was a Muslim and the death occurred in the month of Ramadan. So, he wanted the corpse buried immediately.” It was also gathered that during police interrogation, Tunde claimed that Toib fell and hit his head while trying to evade punishment. Shakirat, a street sweeper with the Lagos State Waste Management Agency, told PUNCH METRO that although she still had three other children, the death of Toib, her first child, was painful. She said “Toib was my first child and because he was the most mature among all my children, we were very close. I will never forget him because people still refer to me as ‘Iya Toib’ (Toib’s mother), as it is done in Yoruba culture.” Shakirat told PUNCH METRO that her ex-husband is a violent man who flares up at the slightest provocation. She said, “Tunde is very hot tempered. That was one of the reasons I divorced him last year. Even when I was five months pregnant with our last child, Rebecca, he would still beat me up and instruct me to sleep on the floor while he slept on the bed “When he threatened to kill me, I moved out of the house. Less than a month later, he married another woman and banned me from coming to the house or visiting my own children.” Shakirat said after Tunde prevented her from seeing her children, she added that she used to go to their schools to visit them regularly. “I could not see my children as often as I would have wanted, but I used to visit them in their schools. They were on holiday when the tragic incident occurred, so I had no way of seeing them.” Sakirat, who became emotional, narrated her last moment with her son. She said “The last time I saw Toib was on Monday, August 8. He came to see me and I noticed a wound on his head. When I asked him how he came about the injury, he said his dad beat him up because he went to buy Maltina from a woman who was my friend. “Toib was preparing to write common entrance examination. At his age, he ought to have started secondary school but because of the domestic violence he was witnessing, he could hardly concentrate in class. “I remember in 2008, when Toib was about nine years old, his father beat him to a pulp for bringing home a toy that he picked up from the road. “Toib sustained serious injuries to the extent that the doctor had to put plaster of Paris around his arm. I still have the doctor’s report.” Since the tragic incident, Shakirat has taken custody of her other children. She said, “On the day of Toib’s death, it was neighbours that informed me of the incident. I went to make a police statement but when policemen got to the house, Tunde had ran away. It was not until after policemen arrested his father, an Imam, that Tunde later came to the station to turn himself in. “I took my children away but things are difficult, I can not leave them again with him. “Toib had a talent for arts. He could draw anything. He would have been an architect or an artist had he lived long.” The state police command’s spokesperson, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said investigation was ongoing. He added that after investigation, the suspect would be charged to court. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201108182343146 |
The Federal Bureau of In vestigation (FBI) has issued certificates of outstanding performance to some operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The beneficiaries are officers who participated actively in the arrest of Nigerian fraudsters that had been on the wanted persons list of the FBI. Kenny Ivy, the FBI Legal Attache to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, who presented the certificates on behalf of the agency, said the FBI was impressed with the degree of professionalism shown by the EFCC, particularly in the arrest of a Nigerian fraudster, Raheed Mustapha, who escaped from the United States and took refuge in Nigeria after defrauding an American company of about $800,000. He thanked the Commission for its efforts and said the FBI “looks forward to a continuous working relationship with the EFCC”. Also present at the event was his assistant, Jennifer Dent. Dent, who has been in Nigeria for the past two years, said she has been working on the case with the Commission since she came. She expressed appreciation for the support she received from the Commission. The 35-year-old Mustapha was alleged to have conspired with four others, including his cousin also based in the United States in 2006, to obtain checks totalling $800,000 from the 401(k) Plans ( pension scheme ) to which they are not entitled. Once employed by the ACS, a Pension Fund Administrator in the U.S., Mustapha informed his conspirators how to obtain from the ACS default personal identification numbers “PINS” for the 401(K) Plans Accounts of the 401(K) participants. He provided them with information as to how to change the mailing addresses associated with those accounts, and how to obtain distribution checks from those accounts. The FBI discovered this and placed an arrest warrant on him before he finally fled to Nigeria. The FBI, however, contacted the EFCC which eventually trailed and arrested him on March 12, 2011, in his father’s residence in Lekki area of Lagos where he was hiding. Speaking at the ceremony which took place at the Commission’s Lagos Zonal Headquarters, the EFCC Chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri, who was represented by the Head of Operations, Zubairu Muazu, expressed appreciation for the commendation by the FBI and assured the American authorities of greater cooperation in the concerted efforts to rid both the two countries of criminal elements. The suspect and another are both awaiting extradition to the U.S. to face trial. Three other Nigerian fugitives had earlier been handed over to U.S. law enforcement agents. While George Ubeozor was extradited in 2008, Sunday Adebisi Adegbesan was handed over in 2009 both to the authorities in New York. The latest to suffer the same fate, Ehkator, was indicted in the U.S. District court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on November 3, 2010 over a $32 million internet collections scam. The suspect was arrested in Benin City, Edo State, in August, 2010 by EFCC operatives, following top level exchange of information between U.S. law enforcement agents and the EFCC over the activities of a trans-border ring of internet scammers headed by Ekhator. The extradition process filed through the office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, was eventually approved by a Federal High Court in Lagos on July 26th, 2011. The suspect was, however, flown to the U.S. on Wednesday, August 10 and handed over to a District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania the following day by an officer of the EFCC. http://www.nigeriancompass.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3488:fbi-rewards-efcc-operatives-over-arrest-of-fraudsters&catid=54:nigeria-today&Itemid=594 |
Kidnappers who abducted the father of Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi contacted his family on Wednesday requesting a N20m ($130,000) ransom for his release, the Police told Reuters. Police were contacted on Friday after Mikel’s father, Michael, who runs a transport company, failed to return to his home located around Rayfield in Jos. A spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Apev Jacob, told Reuters that they had found his father’s car abandoned but did not disclose the location. Jacob gave no further details of how ransom negotiations were progressing and Mikel’s family declined to comment. Mikel mother also declined giving any details when THE PUNCH correspondent contacted her on Wednesday. The 24-year-old Nigeria international played in Sunday’s English Premier League season-opening 0-0 draw at Stoke City despite knowing his father was abducted on Friday. He has publicly pleaded for his safe return. Mrs. Rose Obi, the mother of Mikel, refuted reports that the kidnappers had contacted the family. She told our correspondent in an interview in Jos on Wednesday that it was only the car, a Mercedes Benz, that was recovered somewhere around Kwali Falls, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau state. She said, “We have not been contacted and as such we don’t know his present location. As I told you, we have only recovered the car through the assistance of somebody who saw it and reported to us.” “As it is now we are still expecting a call from the kidnappers, but we are yet to get any.” Police Commissioner, Dipo Ayeni, had told THE PUNCH he was not aware that the kidnappers had contacted the family. He however confirmed the recovery of the car. “We are making frantic efforts to get to the root of the matter. We are deploying all our intelligence network and we are working round the clock to ensure that he was rescued,” the Commissioner said. Our Correspondent reports that family members of kidnapped victims often do not disclose details of dealings with the kidnappers for safety reasons. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201108183352393 |
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala yesterday assumed office as Minister of Finance, saying that she accepted to serve Nigeria again because of the passion she has for the country. Addressing the directors of the ministry on assumption of office, she told them that she came to implement the president’s agenda of creating jobs. To this effect, she revealed to them that her administration would be anchored on three key words: Effectiveness, Efficiency and Delivery. While soliciting their support, she assured them that every individual in the ministry was important and matters a lot and so with close collaboration with the staff, the ministry would achieve the expected result. The minister also noted that the staff could be champions and geniuses, but if they don’t work together, they could not win a match. “If we are all brilliant and at the end of the day nobody wins a match it is useless,” she said. Okonjo-Iweala explained that she accepted to come down because she loves Nigeria with a passion. “It is a work of all Nigerians. There is no magic to it. It is a lot of work. But Ministry of Finance is going to be the ministry of excellence. I am very demanding. It is about execution. If we are at the centre, it means we have to work in close collaboration. We will have to work together,” she said. Welcoming her to the ministry, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Danladi Kifasi, recalled the closest he had been to Okonjo-Iweala was when he went to the United States for a conference and the minister, who was then the managing director of World Bank was there. But because of her exalted position, he was not allowed to see her. “So, for her to have left the lures of that office to come to Nigeria where there is power failure, lack of drinkable water, is a demonstration of her humility,” he said. Also speaking, Director, Budget Office, Dr. Bright Okogu, in addition to congratulating her reminded the minister that she had more challenges now than when she served the ministry earlier. He also reminded the her that expectations were very high but the challenges would take some time to fizzle out, noting, however, that the good thing was that the ministry had started on a sound footing. http://newnigerianpolitics.com/2011/08/17/why-i-accepted-the-job-%E2%80%93okonjo-iweala/ |
Human rights activists and politicians have branded former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, a.k.a. IBB, a failure in the same way he branded former President Olusegun Obasanjo a failure, yesterday. They described Babangida as a kettle calling the pot (Obasanjo) black; that they are two of the same kind. Speaking with P.M.NEWS this morning, constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay added that “two of them are colossal failure; they are twin brothers as far as governance is concerned. They are not better than each other,” he stated. Human rights activist and lawyer, Bamidele Aturu said both Obasanjo and IBB were in the same boat as military leaders. “Both of them failed even when they had the opportunity to have transformed this nation. IBB made corruption permanent. We must thank IBB for saying the truth. It takes a failure to accuse a failure,” he said. According Chief Olu Falae, Obasanjo’s civilian administration was a disaster as he could not manage the various organs of government that could make his administration a success. He said he would prefer IBB to Obasanjo because IBB during his time was cool headed unlike Obasanjo who ruled with iron fist even as a civilian president. Yoruba leader, Ayo Opadokun said the tenures of Obasanjo and IBB were complete disasters that impacted negatively on the lives of Nigerians. He accused Obasanjo of plunging the nation into extreme debt, adding that IBB’s regime was completely dictatorial and militant in nature. Opadokun lamented that Obasanjo performed very poorly while in office but noted that his regime gave room for people to air their views. Also speaking, Mr. Yinka Odumakin described the tenures of IBB and Obasanjo as disasters. He said there was nothing good about the two administrations as they had negative impact all through. IBB had said yesterday that Obasanjo’s eight-year tenure in office was a total failure and that he would have done better if given the same opportunity and resources to rule as a civilian president as Obasanjo had. Speaking with journalists in Minna, Niger State, North Central Nigeria to commemorate his 70th birthday, IBB who was military president from 1985 to 1993, stirred the hornet’s nest when he said if he were lucky to access the revenue that accrued to the Federal Government today, he would have done more than he did while in power. Immediately he made that statement, activists and politicians slammed him, saying he was also guilty of mismanagement of the economy while in government. The Minna, Niger State-born retired General, ruled Nigeria for eight years during which he ruined the nation’s economy by devaluing the naira which was stronger than the dollar when he seized power in August 1985. He also annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by his friend, the late Chief Moshood Abiola. When our correspondent called Chief Obasanjo’s aides this morning to react to Babangida’s statement, they declined to speak. One of them simply said: “Baba (Obasanjo) has asked us not to reply Babangida.” http://www.zimbio.com/Nigeria/articles/sVsgXZwXrQE/IBB+Failure+Sagay+Aturu+Falae |
General Ibrahim Babangida has been roundly condemned over his scurrilous attack on former President Olusegun Obasanjo. IBB had in an interview to mark his 70th birthday described Obasanjo’s eight- year rule as a failure. But reacting yesterday, Senator Kola Ogunwale defended Obasanjo saying he did very well. In fact, he charged the Minna-born general to beg Allah for forgiveness for the untold hardship his regime brought on Nigerians. “For eight years that General Babangida was in the saddle, there was no iota of developmental programme that he put in place, except maradonic tendencies, that has thrown up mediocres in the corridors of power, without any commensurate achievements to show for it,” he said. According to the Osun-born senator, “It is the same General Babangida that threw the whole nation into jeopardy through the criminal annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election and in the process, made Nigeria to lose one of its finest citizens in person of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola. “General Babangida should stop taking Nigerians for a ride through his unguarded utterances. Obasanjo ensured stability in our body polity and whether we like it or not, he has ensured that democracy come to stay with one civilian administration handling over to another. “General Babangida needs to do a rethink on his years in power and use the Ramadan period to ask Allah for forgiveness concerning the hardship he brought on the ways of Nigerians. He should keep silent forever and watch events as they unfold under the divinely ordained leadership According to the statement: “Obasanjo became the Head of State in 1976 and handed over rulership voluntarily in 1979, thereby, fulfilling the norms of democracy, while General Babangida conducted the fairest and freest election in 1993, yet he refused to handover. General Babangide was the ruler of Nigeria for eight years, during which we witnessed increase in our external debt and decrease in our external reserve. “In 1999 Nigeria external debt was N34billion, which Obasanjo cleared through hard negotiation with the Paris Club of creditors. He subsequently left an external reserve of N45billion when he left office in 2007. “As a leader who believes in industrial revolution and worked towards it, Chief Obasanjo wouldn’t have toyed with the power sector reliability. The problem with power sector are so extricating in a vast country like Nigeria. And can we rule out sabotage in some of the measures taken by Obasanjo at improving the power sector as a school of thought believes. Giving the fact that Obasanjo may not be a saint and that he does not possess monopoly of wisdom, it may be that most of these power project contracts were abandoned or sabotaged without his knowledge.” Ogunwale expressed optimism that President Goodluck Jonathan will try his best to accomplish his transformation project, without meddling from the types of General Babangida. “This is not the time for General Babangida to put his well-known horse-trading skills and power intrigues, which was his survivalist norm when in power. Nigerians now know better. Nigerian are well-articulated and well-versed in political happenings around them. General Babangida, I said with all emphasis at my disposal, cannot navigate the extreme odds against him as far as his political sins against Nigerian are concerned,” he declared. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/aug/18/national-18-08-2011-023.html |
Hard times have hit returnee members of the National Assembly, as senators and members of the House of Representatives, are groaning under the yoke of heavy bank loans taken to prosecute the April poll. The National Assembly poll was shifted from April 2 to April 9 when it was eventually conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Checks by Daily Sun showed that a consortium of banks, operating in the National Assembly, as had been the tradition in all election years, pooled funds and gave out what had now become known as ‘election loans’ to willing members of the National Assembly standing for re-election. The loans were given in three parts: Senators-N170 million, House of Representatives-N130 million while lawmakers who were not returning were allowed to access a maximum of N30 million. It was gathered that lawmakers and the banks agreed that the loan would be re-paid from quarterly allowances and severance allowances for non-returning lawmakers. Alternative collateral for the loan for some lawmakers were houses bought from loans obtained from the same banks. Months after the April poll, some lawmakers were faced with the prospect of ‘zero quarterly allowance’ until they offset the election debt to the banks. As a result of the debt repayment scheme, most lawmakers were holed up in Abuja or their various constituencies over their inability to go on summer breaks owed in part to the repayment of earlier loans granted them by the banks. The banks, it was learnt, had allowed some ‘credit-worthy’ lawmakers to readjust the loan payment. A ranking senator affected by the debt-repayment scheme confirmed that the loans were immediately deducted from “our quarterly allowances. Right now, some of us don’t even have one naira in our accounts because the first quarter allowance is not even enough to cover the loans. When we were paid our first quarter allowances, the banks immediately debited the accounts of lawmakers. They got an alert on the amount outstanding in such accounts.” Another senator from the North-central who affirmed that lawmakers were repaying the loans obtained in April disagreed over the amount being repaid.“Some of us took loans of less than N15 million and right now, I have almost repaid my debt although I still have just some few millions to clear with them.“All I did was to readjust my loan.” The ranking lawmaker disclosed that the loan readjustment was possible because “I’m back here.” In a related development, lawmakers were also grappling with legal fees paid to counsel representing them at the election petition tribunals across the country. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/aug/18/national-18-08-2011-009.html |
Major Hamza al-Mustapha’s co-accused in the murder of Kudirat Abiola, Lateef Shofolahan, has denied ever working for the deceased in any capacity throughout her lifetime. Led in evidence by his counsel, Olalekan Ojo, Shofolahan testified at a Lagos High Court on Wednesday when he also said he was arrested on October 10, 1999 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as an aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The defence closed its case with Shofolahan’s testimony, in the 12-year-old trial after which the trial judge, Justice Mojisola Dada, fixed November 10, 2011 for adoption of final written addresses by both parties. Shofolahan, who described as “newspaper propaganda” that he was Kudirat’s aide, maintained that his relationship with the MKO Abiola family, did not go beyond serving as a protocol officer in Abiola’s Hope ‘93 Presidential Campaign Office, in Lagos. During cross-examination by the prosecution counsel, Lawal Pedro (SAN), he told the court that his interaction with Kudirat was only limited to when she was coming to the campaign office for campaign materials. He said, “I have never worked for Kudirat Abiola. I only met her when she was coming to collect posters and other campaign materials. She was not the only one. Even Dr. Doyin Abiola used to come and Bisi Abiola too. “I never worked for the late Kudirat Abiola or personally with Bashorun MKO Abiola, either as a PA (personal assistant, protocol officer, driver, gardener or security guard. It is newspaper propaganda. “I only worked with Hope ‘93 as protocol officer and protocol officer in the office is not the same as Protocol Officer at the residence. After Hope ‘93 was closed down, everybody was driven away, the office building was changed to a school and no more protocol officer.” Shofolahan stated that the prosecution and the Special Investigative Panel, before whom he alongside others appeared in connection with the series of the assassinations in the Abacha regime, failed to prove that he was Kudirat’s aide. Shofolahan said, “When I appeared before the SIP, I begged the panel headed by AIG Ojomo to ask any member of Abiola’s family to come and identify me. I also suggested that they should take me to his house chained in hands and legs so that his children can identify me. My Lord, I did not work in the house.” He denied having any personal relationship with MKO Abiola, who was in detention when his wife, Kudirat, was gunned down in Lagos on June 4, 1996, Shofolahan said he was number 22 in the hierarchy at the Hope ‘93 campaign office. In his response to Pedro’s question he said he moved with Obasanjo to the Presidential Villa when he won the presidential election and was subsequently sworn in as president in 1999. Shofolahan said, “I was with Hope ‘93 organisation till July 1993, when it was dissolved. Then I went back to my beer business. I was there fully from ‘93 to ‘98 because when I was with Hope ‘93 I had people working there. “The same year, 1998, My Lord, I joined Obasanjo Campaign Organisation and I stayed in his farm-based house in Otta. “When he won the presidential election, we moved to Abuja together in 1999.” “I was arrested in the Villa. I was arrested in the presidency. I told those who arrested me that I was working there. “They asked me what I was doing at the Villa. I told them I was a staff. They then called Bodunde, the P.A, Otunba Fasawe was there, all of them was there and they told them I was a staff.” He denied knowing how Kudirat was killed, saying “I only knew she died, but I don’t know what killed her.” He also said he did not attend her burial because “area boys took over the whole of Ikeja that day.” On his relationship with al-Mustapha, Shofolahan said he first met him at the two-million-man march of ‘Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha’ rally that took place in Abuja in March 1998. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/5739147-146/shofolahan_denies_working_for_kudi_abiola.csp |
