Mandela was arrested and convicted in 1962, for sabotage and attempting to overthrow the state through violent acts. The acts, in question involve: blowing up military installations, power plants, telephone lines and transport links: with minimum casualties.
He was not imprisoned for life for leading a campaign against apartheid. Such acts got him short sentences. It was only when, due to frustration, he resorted to extreme measures, that he was locked up indefinitely.
