The 2010 FIFA World Cup Venues There are 10 venues that will be used at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, six of which are brand-new and four that have been refurbished. The capacities in our quick guide below are for 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, which is generally less than the actual capacity of the venue. Soccer City (Soweto) – 88 460 capacity – The biggest stadium in Africa was newly-built on the site of the old Soccer City and has been created to resemble a calabash. The stadium glows at night to give a spectacular appearance on the Soweto skyline. It will host eight matches, including the opening match and the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Moses Mabhida Stadium (Durban) – 69 957 – The magnificent newly-constructed venue has distinctive arch that has a running SkyCar which carries visitors 100-metres into the air for a 360 degree view of Durban, or can be used as a bungee-jump platform. It will host seven matches, including a semifinal. Moses Mabhida, who the venue is named after, was leader of the South African Communist Party from 1978 until his death in 1985. Cape Town Stadium (Cape Town) – 66 605 – Another newly-built venue that rose from the ashes of the old Greenpoint Stadium, it is one of the great 'atmosphere' grounds of the world having been purposely constructed to keep the crowd noise within the bowl, and the Cape wind out of it! It will also host eight matches, including a semifinal. Ellis Park (Johannesburg) – 61 639 – A famous venue in the history of South African sport, Ellis Park got a minor facelift for the FIFA World Cup, which included the erection of two new scoreboards. It was named after a JD Ellis, who made the land for the stadium available to be used. Loftus Versfeld Stadium (Pretoria) – 49 365 – Named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, who is credited with starting organised sport in Pretoria, the ground may be more famous as a rugby stadium bring home to the Bulls Super 14 franchise, but these days it is very much a soccer venue with two domestic PSL teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns playing matches there. Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (Port Elizabeth) – 46 082 – Newly-built for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay, the stadium is a major improvement on the city's old EPRFU Stadium. The venue's roof is made up of a series of white 'petals', making it look like a flower, which has led to it being given the nickname of 'The Sunflower'. Peter Mokaba Stadium (Polokwane) – 45 264 – Named after former ANC Youth League leader Peter Mokaba, the stadium has been newly-built right next to the old structure which carried the same name. It's red and brown hues are meant to signify the earth and rising sun over the Limpopo province. Free State Stadium (Bloemfontein) – 45 058 – The existing Free State Stadium, home to the Cheetahs Super 14 franchise and occasionally PSL side Bloemfontein Celtic, has been given a face-lift, including a new main grandstand on the west side of the ground that has increased capacity by 12 000. Royal Bafokeng Stadium (Rustenburg) – 44 530 – Built by the Royal Bafokeng Nation and opened in 1999, the multi-purpose stadium has had a new tier and roof added to the main grandstand. It is the only World Cup venue with an athletics track and is home to local PSL side Platinum Stars. Mbombela Stadium (Mbombela) – 43 589 – The smallest of the 2010 FIFA World Cup venues is also possibly the most unique with its animal theme. The 18 roof supports have been made to look like giraffes, while there is a distinctive zebra pattern for the seating. Being so close to the Kruger National Park, the theme is fitting! |
