Ekiti Speaks Loud and Clear: Governor-Elect Celebrates Historic Landslide Victory

The Governor-elect of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has expressed profound gratitude to the people of the state following what has been described as a historic and overwhelming electoral victory.

In a statement issued after the announcement of the election results, the Governor-elect said the voice of the people had echoed across every corner of Ekiti State, sending a clear and unmistakable message in support of continuity, development, and progress.

According to the Governor-elect, securing victory in all 16 local government areas and receiving approximately 85 percent of the total votes cast is a humbling demonstration of the confidence and trust reposed in his leadership by the people of Ekiti.

He noted that the overwhelming support came from both urban centres and rural communities, reflecting a collective desire among Ekiti residents for stability, sustainable growth, and expanded opportunities for all.

Describing the outcome as a mandate for greater service, the Governor-elect emphasized that the victory belongs to every citizen of the state, regardless of political affiliation.

"There are no winners or losers in this election. What we have today is one united Ekiti, committed to continuing its journey toward greater prosperity and development," he said.

The Governor-elect further pledged to justify the confidence placed in him by leading with humility, dedication, fairness, and a renewed commitment to improving the lives of the people.

He thanked the people of Ekiti, popularly known as Ekiti Kete, for their support and for making history through their massive participation in the democratic process.

The statement concluded with a call for unity and collective effort as the state embarks on a new chapter of growth and development.

PoliticsLawan Secures APC Ticket For Eighth Senate Term by Hongbenga(op): 10:07pm On May 18
Former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the Yobe North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawan’s emergence followed consultations among party stakeholders and leaders in Yobe State, who reportedly agreed to adopt him as the party’s consensus candidate for the senatorial seat.

The development means the longtime lawmaker is now set to seek an unprecedented eighth consecutive term in the Senate, having represented Yobe North since 1999. Before moving to the Senate in 2007, Lawan also served two terms in the House of Representatives.

Party loyalists and supporters at the meeting described Lawan as an experienced politician whose influence and legislative experience remain valuable to both Yobe State and the nation.

Speaking after his emergence, Lawan appreciated party leaders, delegates, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him, promising to continue delivering quality representation and supporting policies that would improve the lives of Nigerians.

Political observers say Lawan’s return to the race further strengthens his dominance in Yobe North politics, where he has maintained a strong political structure for decades.

The former Senate President was among the leading contenders during the 2023 APC presidential primaries but lost the ticket to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Despite that setback, he retained his influence within the ruling party and the National Assembly.

With the APC ticket now secured, attention is expected to shift to the opposition parties and possible challengers ahead of the 2027 elections in Yobe North.

PoliticsFani-kayode Confirmed As Nigeria Envoy To South Africa, Denies Germany Rejection by Hongbenga(op): 1:34pm On May 07
Femi Fani-Kayode Confirms Posting as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa, Denies Rejection by Germany

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has officially announced that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved his posting as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa.

According to him, the new appointment came after he requested a redeployment from his earlier posting to Germany. He explained that he preferred South Africa for personal reasons and because he wanted to serve in an African nation with strong economic and diplomatic ties to Nigeria.

He also stated that South Africa aligns more closely with his political views on foreign affairs and his pan-African vision.

Fani-Kayode expressed gratitude to former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, for considering his request, as well as President Tinubu for approving the redeployment. He also thanked Sam Enang, who was initially posted to South Africa but reportedly agreed to switch postings and move to Germany instead.

Reacting to reports that Germany rejected his nomination, Fani-Kayode dismissed the claims as false and malicious. He said no formal rejection was ever made by Germany and described the report as fabricated.

He further disclosed that his legal team has been instructed to pursue a defamation lawsuit against those behind the publication.

The former minister said he now looks forward to representing Nigeria in South Africa, a country he described as admirable and inspiring because of its history.

CultureOoni Of Ife Installs Olufunsho Amosun As Yeye Moremi Oodua by Hongbenga(op): 6:17pm On May 02
The ancient city of Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba race, came alive on Saturday as eminent personalities from across Nigeria gathered as the Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC), Arole Oodua Olofin Adimula and the Natural Head of the Oduduwa race worldwide, the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, installed Chief Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun, wife of former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, as the Yeye Moremi Oodua,

In a statement on Saturday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare said the colourful installation ceremony, which held at Afenworo Square opposite the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, also coincided with the 60th birthday celebration of the philanthropist and founder of the Uplift Development Foundation.

Among the dignitaries present at the historic event was former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was represented by his wife, Mrs. Bola Obasanjo, amid cheers from guests and traditional enthusiasts.

Speaking during the ceremony, Obasanjo described the Yeye Moremi title as one of the most revered honours in Yorubaland, noting that the title symbolises courage, sacrifice, service to humanity and commitment to cultural preservation.

The former President commended the Ooni of Ife for sustaining the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba race and using the throne to promote unity and development across the country.

He also congratulated Chief Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun on her installation, describing her as a woman of virtue, compassion and outstanding commitment to humanity through her numerous philanthropic activities.

Earlier in her acceptance speech, the newly installed Yeye Moremi Oodua expressed profound gratitude to God and the Ooni of Ife for the extraordinary honour bestowed upon her.

Mrs. Amosun said she was deeply humbled to be chosen among many distinguished women for the prestigious title, pledging to uphold the virtues and legacies of the legendary Queen Moremi Ajasoro.

“I return all glory, honour and adoration to Almighty God for this rare privilege and extraordinary honour bestowed upon me as the Yeye Moremi Oodua.

“I salute the legendary Moremi Ajasoro, the iconic heroine of Yorubaland whose bravery, sacrifice and selflessness remain a shining light to generations. The shoes she left behind are too great to fill, but I wholeheartedly and humbly accept this responsibility with diligence and commitment,” she said.

She noted that the title was not merely ceremonial, but a divine call to serve God and humanity with passion, empathy, humility and integrity.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. I will not take this honour for granted or handle it with levity. I fully understand that this title is a call to service and greater responsibility,” she added.

The newly installed Yeye Moremi further prayed for divine wisdom, strength and enablement to make meaningful impact in society and justify the confidence reposed in her.

Also speaking at the event, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, stressed the need for greater unity among Yoruba leaders irrespective of political affiliations.

According to him, the gathering reflected the collective interest and unity of the Yoruba nation.

“This is Yorubaland and there is no political party here today. What we are seeing is unity in the interest of the Yoruba nation. If we can continue to come together like this, then there is great hope for the Yoruba race,” Makinde said.

In his remarks, the Ooni who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) congratulated Chief Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun on her installation, describing her as a compassionate and selfless woman whose lifestyle reflects the virtues of Moremi Ajasoro.

The Ooni narrated the heroic story of Moremi Ajasoro, who sacrificed greatly for the liberation and protection of the Yoruba people, noting that the title of Yeye Moremi is reserved for women of exceptional character, integrity and service to humanity.

Ooni Ogunwusi charged the newly installed Yeye Moremi to continue impacting lives positively and promoting the cultural values, unity and progress of the Yoruba race.

The revered monarch also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for traditional institutions and cultural heritage in Nigeria.

Dignitaries at the event included former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN); former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro; former Ogun State Governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel; former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore; and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Also present were senators, members of the House of Representatives, wives of former governors, prominent business leaders, top government officials and several First Ladies.

Traditional rulers at the event included the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, and Oba Mufutau Muhammed Gbadamosi, alongside other eminent monarchs from different parts of Yorubaland.

The queens of the Ooni, Olori Aderonke Ogunwusi and Olori Ashley Ogunwusi, also accompanied the newly installed Yeye Moremi during parts of the ceremony, adding glamour and cultural splendour to the historic occasion.

PoliticsDangote Joins Yayi Camp, Endorses Senator Adeola For Ogun 2027 by Hongbenga(op): 10:57am On Apr 30
Africa’s foremost industrialist, Aliko Dangote, has thrown his weight behind the governorship ambition of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, in the build-up to the 2027 election in Ogun State.

Dangote made his position known during the formal presentation of Yayi’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to Governor Dapo Abiodun. The event, which attracted political stakeholders and supporters, marked a significant moment in the state’s political landscape.

Speaking at the gathering, Dangote described Senator Adeola as a tested and trusted leader with the capacity to drive economic growth and development in Ogun State. He noted that Yayi’s track record in public service and his commitment to grassroots development make him the right choice for the state’s next phase of leadership.

“I am confident in his ability to deliver and take Ogun State to greater heights,” Dangote reportedly stated, as he pledged his support for the Yayi 2027 project.

In his response, Senator Adeola appreciated the endorsement, describing it as a strong vote of confidence. He reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive governance, infrastructural development, and economic expansion if elected as governor.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who received the nomination forms, commended the peaceful and organized nature of the process, urging all aspirants to maintain unity within the party.

Political observers believe Dangote’s endorsement could significantly boost Yayi’s chances, given his influence in business and national affairs. As the 2027 governorship race gathers momentum, such high-profile support is expected to shape alignments and strengthen campaign structures across the state.

PoliticsOsun APC Accuses Adeleke Of Playing Dirty Politics With LG Staff Salar by Hongbenga(op): 7:08am On Apr 18
You're Responsible For Non-payment Of Salaries, Allowances Of Grassroots Workers By Withholding Vital Documents

- Osun APC Fires Adeleke

...Accuses Him Of Playing Dirty Politics With LG Staff Salaries

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned the state Governor Ademola Adeleke to stop playing ostrich on the issue of the federal allocations for the local government council areas in the state by spreading false narratives to score unmerited political sympathy in the court of the public.

It would be recalled that Governor Adeleke, on Thursday in Osogbo while holding a meeting with some of the stakeholders on his stalled white elephant projects in the state, accused the APC of hijacking the federal allocations meant for the local government council areas, ascribing the falsehood for the reason why his government could not perform optimally in the state.

It is absolutely wrong and demeaning for the chief executive of a state to employ the use of lies and subterfuge to run his administration as such option of governance does more damage to the government because the governed he is feeding with falsehoods are not robots incapable of reasoning to decipher the truth.

How on earth could Governor Adeleke be imbued with such attribute of misinformation on the issue of the federal allocations for the Osun State local government council areas which have been steadily collected on monthly basis by the Court of Appeal-reinstated local government council chairmen who have been developing their respective constituencies with same?

It is on record that apart from the massive grading of roads by these honourable local government councils, they recently distributed three hundred motorcycles to the police and other formal and informal security services in the state while it is also a statement of fact that each of the local government council chairmen distributed fifty thousand Naira to one thousand five hundred people for diverse people as a welfare support in their respective constituencies.

Equally, the security vehicles distributed by these honourable chairmen are on the way to boost security in the state which has been utterly neglected by the incumbent administration since its inception close to four years ago.

Therefore, it was wrong for Governor Adeleke to have accused the reinstated APC local government chairmen for any issue the embattled governor may be having with the primary school teachers, primary health workers and all other government workers which salaries are embedded in the local government federal allocations.

We expected the rattled and visibly confused Governor Adeleke to be bold enough to have told the truth about the delay in the payment of the salaries and other allowances of the statutory grassroots workers who are drawing their salaries from the local government councils.

The governor's false statement would have been laced with honour if he had disclosed to the innocent and discerning minds in the state and beyond that he is the one responsible for the non-payment of the salaries and allowances of the said primary school teachers, health workers and others by his blatant refusal to release the electronic salary vouchers of the local government staff and primary school teachers, the actuarial valuation registers for the pensioners, vouchers of this valuation properly audited; data showing compilation of leave bonuses; data showing compilation of co-operative investment deductions and data showing compilation of check-off dues to trade unions properly audited, despite several appeals to the governor by the reinstated local government council chairmen.

The actuarial register contains the quantum of money due to each worker as the value of past services rendered to the government and this is what is called Bond which the reinstated council executives are ready to back up with funds and be released to the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) to facilitate payment of money for the retirees in the various local government council areas.

These pensioners must know now that there are enough funds to take care of their Bond Certificates if only they could plead with the governor to allow them to be free.

The electronic audited salary vouchers are the documents stating the amount of money to be paid and the processes passed through to get the money paid legally while the leave bonuses are the monies paid to each worker as allowances when he or she is on leave.

Check-off dues however, are the monies deducted as the union dues from the salaries of the workers.

We are, through this explanation, drawing Governor Adeleke to the court of the public for the people to give their impartial judgement on who is the enemy of the affected workers whose salaries are embedded in the federal allocations for the local government council areas.

Governor Adeleke should stop henceforth his spreading of falsehoods on the payment of the federal allocations for the local government councils as he has been the reason the salaries are not being paid because of his option to play a dirty politics with it.

We assure the affected workers that their entitlements would be promptly settled by the reinstated local government council chairmen immediately the highly vindictive Governor Adeleke relaxes his hold on the vital documents for the payment of the salaries and allowances.

It was when the Adeleke attempt to play a dirty politics with the salaries of our revered traditional rulers in the state failed that he switched over to the primary school teachers, primary health workers and others.

The kernel of our statement is that Governor Adeleke has been the one preventing the payment of the salaries and allowances of the grassroots workers in the state and he should be held responsible for playing a dirty politics with the means of their likelihood.

We wonder why the governor is now castigating the reinstated APC local government council areas' chairmen over the non-payment of the salaries and allowances of the council workers when it is obvious that he is behind the lingering official anomaly in the government.

PoliticsTinubu Approves N3.3 Trillion Payment Plan To Restore Reliable Electricity by Hongbenga(op): 6:59pm On Apr 05
STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES N3.3 TRILLION PAYMENT PLAN TO RESTORE RELIABLE ELECTRICITY

President Bola Tinubu has approved the payment plan to finally settle the outstanding debts under the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme.

The debt repayment plan followed the final review of the legacy debts that have beset the power sector for more than a decade.

The long-standing debts accumulated between February 2015 and March 2025. Following verification, ₦3.3 trillion has been agreed as a full and final settlement, ensuring a fair and transparent resolution.

Implementation has begun, with 15 power plants signing settlement agreements totalling ₦2.3 trillion. The Federal Government has already raised ₦501 billion to fund these payments. Out of the amount, N223 billion has been disbursed, with further payments underway.

What this means for Nigerians: With payments reaching the power value chain, generation will be more stable. With power plants supported, electricity reliability will improve.

And as the sector stabilises, more investment, more jobs, and better service will follow.

“This programme is not just about settling legacy debts. It is about restoring confidence across the power sector — ensuring gas suppliers are paid, power plants can keep running, and the system begins to work more reliably," explained Olu Arowolo-Verheijen, Special Adviser on Energy to President Tinubu.

“It is part of a broader set of reforms already underway — including better metering and service-based tariffs that link what you pay to the quality of electricity you receive.

“The government is also prioritising power supply to businesses, industries, and small enterprises — because reliable electricity is critical to creating jobs, supporting livelihoods, and growing the economy.

“The goal is simple: more reliable power for homes, stronger support for businesses, and a system that works better for all Nigerians," she added.

President Tinubu has commended all stakeholders who supported efforts to resolve the legacy issues in the power sector. He has also confirmed that the next phase (Series II) will begin this quarter.

PoliticsOsun2022: Aregbesola, Liability, Political Virus To Osun APC --- Youth Wing by Hongbenga(op): 7:46pm On Aug 03, 2022
...Urges Buhari to caution him over his anti-party conduct

The Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun on Wednesday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to caution his Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola over his anti-party conducts, aimed at grounding the party in the State.

The Osun APC said the Minister has become a liability and a political virus to the party as seen in his inward and outward dispositions in recent times.

Addressing a Press Conference at the APC State Secretariat, Osogbo, the APC State Youths Leader, Mr. Goke Akinwemimo, noted that the former Governor was on a vendetta move to destroy the party in Osun on account of ego tripping and self aggrandizement.

He said the unscrupulous conduct and attitude of the Minister is becoming worrisome, retrogressive and least expected from a serving Minister and former Governor who has risen to prominence with the support of the party structure.

The Osun APC Youth Wing alluded to the clandestine approach of Aregbesola to mobilising both financial and human resources, including security agents under the supervision of his Ministry to harass and oppress the teeming members in a bid to aid the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the State as manifested in the outcome of the recently-conducted gubernatorial election.

The concerned APC Youth Wing further expressed displeasure at the inhuman dispositions of the former Governor not only to kill the structures of the party but also to relegate its members as seen in his anti-party conduct and the support given to the opposition parties, particularly the candidate of the People's Democratic Party to emerge.

According to the Youth Wing, it was in the public knowledge that some political marauders and unscrupulous elements sponsored by the Aregbesola, under the auspices of The Osun Progressives (TOP), embarked on what can be best discribed as public charade and disgrace in Osogbo, Osun State capital, on Tuesday, to blackmail the state leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"As the youth wing of the party, we are compelled to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to caution the Minister on his callous and vendetta move to destroy our party in Osun on account of ego tripping and personal self aggrandizement.

"The conduct is becoming worrisome, retrogressive and worst expected from a serving Minister and Former Governor who has risen to prominence with the support of the party structure.

"Apart from the fact that the former Minister openly sponsored splinter groups to reduce the winning chance of our party to win the just- concluded Governorship Election in the state, he openly declared support for opposition party and moved further to mobilise, including security agents under the supervision of his Ministry to harass and oppress our teeming members to aid the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

"The PDP candidate openly stated the he received support from the allies of the former governor. Also, the leading figures of his splinter group have since decamped to the PDP. This is aside the fact of using his widely uncirculated newsletter, Osun Defender, to attack our party and Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

"Least to say, Rauf Aregbesola has become a liability and a political virus to Osun APC with his conduct and appears to be on mission to ground our party in the state in aid of the PDP. At this moment, we can not remain silent as youths who have strong confidence in the prospects of APC and capacity to win future elections.

"To understand the dexterity of his political impotency in Osun, the just-concluded election is the first election that APC recorded 375, 027 despite the fact that the minister and his allies openly worked against our party, the highest we recorded during his regime when he was Governor and portrayer as ALL MIGHTY, Governor was less than 300,000 votes. It was under his leadership that we lost Osun West Election to Senator Ademola Adeleke during the 2017 Senatorial by election ridiculously, because we lost 9 out of 10 local governments in Osun West.

"While we are still studying the results of the election with a view to challenging same at the Tribunal, it is important to mention that the over 28,000 votes that were announced as difference for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win the election were harvested from Ede North and South alone.

"As at the time of addressing this conference, Aregbesola and his allies are still pursuing a litigation at the Court of Appeal, Akure Division, challenging the Ward Congress we held in Osun. He and his splinter group did not challenge the Local Government congress as well as the State Congress that produced the Prince Gboyega Famodun led state executive of the party.

"It also on record that they contested all the party positions during the last congress and participated in our party primaries where they lost woefully, therefore, the demand of Aregbesola and his allies for dissolution of the party structure is not only ridiculous but also exposes his ill-wish for our party.

"In the last two years, Aregbesola and his allies have confronted our party with lies and deceit far more than the PDP, which clearly explained that the Minister and his allies are on a mission to destroy Osun APC and limit our wining chances, including the coming presidential election in February next year.

"Aregbesola has declared war on our Presidential Candidate in Ijebu-Jesa in one of his public outings. At that outing, he publicly declared his mission to strategise the political fall of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. May Allah reject his evil wish. Also viral was the video on his birthday dancing with some of his acolytes that our party’s candidate would be defeated at the governorship election! What kind of reputable and self-dignifying leader does that?

"If the Minister is truly patriotic and sensitive to the plight of the people of Osun and our party, his and his allies' concern should be how to join our party leaders who are currently reviewing the result of the last governorship election. When he contested in 2007, it took him Three and Half years of a rigorous electoral litigation to reclaim his mandate, and for those who believe in the party how to bounce back should be of priority.

"As stakeholders in the party, we are bold to say that Aregbesola's stand against our party is not a substantial factor that led to our TEMPORARY SETBACK in the just- concluded election but rather Aregbesola has become a virus that must be removed for our stability and better positioning to win future elections. We are courageous and Osun APC is better positioned without Aregbesola who has become a deadly opposition masquerading as part of our party.

"We consider this intervention as important and inevitable to make our party stronger, viable and responsible to the yearnings of the good people of Osun beyond the grandstanding and hullabaloo of Rauf Aregbesola and his allies.

"We are saying these to alert the national leadership of our dear party that Aregbesola and his allies are no more with APC. Apart from the fact that their previous actions have shown that they are working for opposition, they are equally determined to ensure that we lose other future elections, including the presidential election. They are out to spell doom for our party. But we are prepared to resist them and they will not succeed", he added.

Speaking on some of the factors that contributed to the 'temporary setback' of the party in the last governorship election, the concerned APC youths, said it is on record that the 30 months backlog of half salaries owed workers and pensioners by former Governor Aregbesola became the party's albatross.

But rather than support the party, Aregbesola and his allies, the APC youths noted, sold out.

"For this alone, the Minister and his allies have lost every moral ground to even claim membership of our party. In fact, if it were to be in a saner clime, he ought to have resigned as our party member and relinquish his ministerial position because his heart and soul are no longer with our party. If the minister has any wish for our party, it is total collapse, but he will fail in his sinister mission", the youths added.

Reacting to the protest of some members of the splinter group of the party called 'The Osun Progressives' (TOP), the concerned youths noted that the purported street demonstration was co-sponsored by Aregbesola and PDP's leadership to prepare grounds for their unholy alliance ahead of the future election by taking over Osun APC completely and conveniently hand it over to PDP to ensure the defeat of the Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as earlier boasted by Aregbesola and his allies. " But by the Grace of God, the plot will fail," the APC youths said.

PoliticsAirport Project: Osun, NAF Partner 2 Build Africa's First, Largest Aviation Cit by Hongbenga(op): 8:47pm On Jul 27, 2022
...as Oyetola hands over runway, airport corridor to Nigerian Airforce

As part of his administration's relentless efforts to rekindle the collective hopes of the citizens and stimulate the State economy, Osun government has partnered Nigerian Air Force to build Africa's first and largest aviation city in Ido-Osun.

The initiative, according to the government, is a testament to the current administration's untiring efforts to keep the dream of having an airport in Osun alive.

This is even as Osun Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Wednesday, handed over the runway and airport corridor for the commencement of the construction phase of the project.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Oladayo Amoo, who led the Nigerian Air Force delegation to Osun, lauded Oyetola for what he described as a major milestone in the state's history, describing the partnership as another developmental stride in the State.

According to him, the aviation city is sequel to the relocation of the Research and Development Centre of the Force from Kaduna to Osogbo in 2021, in addition to the existing Nigerian Air Force Institute of Safety and a Special Operation Force Group at Ipetu-Ijesha.

Describing the components of the project, Amoo, who was represented by the Principal Director, Air Force Research and Development Centre, Air Vice Marshall Moses Onilede, said: "The project would include an aircraft manufacturing plant, a maintenance repair organisation and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle production centre, amongst others.

"It would be the first of its kind on the continent.

"The runway is therefore a critical requirement for these facilities. This is why this occasion today is not only a laudable one but a major milestone towards many other achievements".

Handing over the official documents of the runway and airport corridor to the Chief of Air Staff, Governor Oyetola said his administration has taken the bull by the horns to ensure that the State keeps the dream of having an airport in Osun alive.

He added that the handover ceremony signalled the beginning of another mutually-beneficial relationship with the Nigerian Air Force to speed up the construction and accelerate the completion of the airport.

"As a government that is desirous of diversifying the State's economy, we realized early enough that the completion of the Osun airport would aid our economic transformation efforts. We however became helpless when confronted with the humongous amount required to make the dream a reality, especially in the face of competing demands in a depressed economy.

"As a government given to creative alternatives to meet societal needs, we embarked on a diplomatic shuttle, first by visiting the Minister of Aviation and later the Chief of Air Staff, all in the quest to develop the airport corridor.

"Efforts of the State Government through the Ministry of Works and Transport resulted in several meetings and inspection visits by the officials of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Air force.

"Our visit to the Chief of Air Staff yielded positive results, and since then, the Chief of Air Staff has remained true to the commitment reached, first by relocating the Airforce Research and Development Centre, which I am told will carry out research into manned and unmanned aircraft, missiles, rockets and other war items, to Osun and later by requesting for 100 hectares of land along the airport corridor in Ido-Osun for the purpose of establishing an Air Force Base.

"However, we could only get 60 hectares along that axis for the Air Force Base in Ido-Osun. When we needed additional land, to accommodate parts of the Airforce Base project, specifically, the barracks, Osun Government approached the Nigerian Army.

"I personally wrote to the Army authority, requesting it to grant us additional 50 hectares of land from the military acquired land along the Osogbo-Kelebe axis of the State for the barracks and the army graciously granted our request. I cannot thank the Chief of Army Staff enough for the gesture.

"I am happy to inform this gathering that our diplomatic shuttle to the Federal Ministry of Aviation also yielded positive results. But it is heart-warming and a thing of joy that it is at this stage of the collaborative efforts of the State Government and the Federal Ministry of Aviation at developing the Airport that the Nigerian Air Force indicated its desire to use the entire Airport Land for its Aviation Technology City project, which I am told will be the first of its kind in Africa. We are indeed lucky in Osun and I feel proud to have been part of this history.

"I would like to state here that the request by the Nigerian Air Force for the State Government to cede the Runway and the entire Airport corridor to them is hereby granted. The corridor will be developed for both military and civilian use.

"Let me state, as we are executing the ceremonial handover today, that all the support that will be required for the effective take-off of the Osun airport will be provided by the State. We shall also keep the Nigerian Airforce abreast of the issues with the previous technical design of the airport, as pointed out by the Ministry of Aviation. They will guide the Force in the execution of the project", Oyetola added.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engr. Remi Omowaye, described the project as critical to the state's drive to become a viable investment destination.

He lauded Governor Oyetola for giving life to the airport project, for which approval was got in 2007.

OSUN 2022: OONI CONGRATULATES ADELEKE, COMMENDS OYETOLA, ELECTORATE, INEC

The Arole Oduduwa & Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has congratulated candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the just concluded gubernatorial election in the State of Osun, Senator Ademola Adeleke on his triumph at the poll, admonishing him to carry everybody on board as a people's leader who has no time for any vendetta that will make him lose focus on his plans for the state and who will not patronise the sycophantic behaviours of hypocrites who may want to selfishly misadvise him pretending to be his best loyalists.

The foremost African monarch in a statement by his Director of Media & Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, on Monday described the election result as a confirmation of Adeleke's grassroot popularity in the state which he must reward with good governance driven by rule of law, fear of God and selfless service to the people.

"Senator Ademola Adeleke has been around for some time and his eventual victory is an opportunity for him to execute his election promises as much as possible. The Arole Oodua urges him to be magnanimous in victory and justify the mandate of our people which confirms his grassroot popularity by ensuring that Osun indigenes enjoy maximum dividends of democracy and good governance driven by rule of law, fear of God and selfless service to the people."

"Mr Governor-Elect is from a noble family and a strong political dynasty in the state who must avoid to be misled by hypocrisy and sycophancy of some arrogant political llieutenants who may want to instigate him against merely perceived political enemies both in his party and in the opposition parties. Vendetta is capable of derailing a leader." Olafare said.

Ooni, the Permanent Chairman, Osun State Council of Obas and Co-chairman, National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), equally
hailed the state governor, Alhaji Isiaka Oyetola for his peace loving character with which he comported himself before, during and after the election, describing him as a perfect gentleman of peace who kept his promise made recently at the peace accord meeting that he was not going to act as a desperate politician but would only remain as a simple political leader in all ramifications.

"During the Peace Accord Ceremony organised by the National Peace Committee few days to the election in Osogbo attended by traditional rulers led by the Ooni, civil societies, INEC officials led by the Chairman, heads of security agencies and other peace stakeholders from across the country, Governor Oyetola signed the peace accord alongside 12 other contestants and he made a promise to conduct himself peacefully before, during and after the election in a character of a gentleman and a simple leader in all ramifications. This he has done to the admiration of the traditional rulers and he must be well commended."

Ooni, the Natural Head of Oduduwa Race worldwide also praised the Osun electorate who went out on Saturday peacefully with their usual virtuous 'Omoluwabi' decorum and voted for their different preferred candidates without setting the state on fire which would have posed serious challenges to be managed by security agencies and traditional rulers.

Ooni Ogunwusi in the conclusive part of the statement lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over what he described as a job well done.

"In a recent visit by the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu to the Ile-Oodua palace in Ile-Ife where he met with the Osun traditional rulers who assured the INEC boss of their neutrality as fathers for all the candidates. They expressed confidence in the INEC's capacity to deliver without bias. Arole Oodua hereby states that the Osun traditional rulers are not disappointed at the end of the whole process. INEC is well commended"

"The success and smoothness of the voting exercise was not without the virtuous ethos of 'Omoluabi' displayed across the state by the Osun electorate. They are truly the heroes of that election day.

"What this means for our democracy is that more people are getting interested in all stages and our system of governance is gradually becoming more acceptable. It is indeed a victory for the State and democracy which must be seen as 'No Victor No Vanquished." Ooni Ogunwusi stated.

Osun 2022: Oyetola, Adeleke, others sign peace accord

Candidates from all political parties contesting in the July 16 Osun State Governorship election have signed a peace accord.

This is coming barely three days to the gubernatorial election.

The Convener of the National Peace Committee, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, said violence is a fundamental threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

He, however, charged the aspirants and politicians to see the signing of the peace accord as a symbolic commitment to democracy adding that Nigeria desperately needs a peaceful environment.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu appealed to all political parties, candidates and other actors to play their part in supporting the Peace Accord. It is not enough to simply sign the Peace Accord.

He said, “What is more important is to abide by its letter and spirit.

This is the best way to show your commitment to the implementation of the Peace Accord and your appreciation of the work of the Peace Committee.

In the same vein, the DIG Johnson Babatunde who represented Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, also appealed to political actors to play by the rule of the game.

He further charged parents to warn their wards not to allow themselves be used as thugs by politicians.

"We will not rest until the vote buyers and sellers are taken off our streets. Security is our collective responsibility, ” he said.

In his words, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, said “Power belongs to the people, you can only try your best. We appeal to all our political actors to follow the rules of the game as we look forward to a peaceful election come this Saturday 16th July 2022.”

Osun22 Attack on Lasun's residence: 'former lawmaker no threat to Oyetola's re-election

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun, Ismail Omipidan, has described as fallacy of insufficient statistics, the allegation of attack on the residence of the immediate past Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Lasun Yusuf.

Omipidan said Lasun Yusuf who is the governorship candidate of Labour Party does not in any way pose a threat to the God's ordained victory of his principal in the July 16 governorship election in the State.

Omipidan's reaction followed the allegation of attack on the residence of the erstwhile lawmaker who claimed that unknown gunmen unleashed terror on his private residence at wee hours.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, the Governor's spokesman, argued that if indeed there was an attack on the residence of the former legislator, why on earth was the attack not repelled by the security operatives attached to him and his abode?

According to him, the Labour Party candidate was just trying to build something on nothing. He said the claim is a political gimmick that cannot in any way hold water in the face of reality.

Omipidan challenged the erstwhile lawmaker to prove his allegation against the person and government of Oyetola, saying no amount of propaganda can stop the moving train of Governor Oyetola from coasting to victory come July 16 governorship election in the State.

"The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, Hon. Lasun Yusuf, alleged that some gunmen whom he suspected to be the supporters of our Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, the governorship candidate of our party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, attacked his residence.

"The first question that came to mind was, "Where were his security details when the incident happened?"

"I am aware that as a former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, he has security men around him.

"I am also aware that some of the security men attached to his house usually harass people in the day time. So, I wonder where they were from 1:00am to 2:30am when the attack was carried out.

"If indeed there was an attack, was there any attempt to repel the attack? Where were the security operatives? In any case, Hon. Lasun Yusuf, with all due respect and responsibility, is not a threat to our candidate, Governor Oyetola. This is a man that contested governorship primary election with our candidate a few months ago and couldn't win Irepodun Local Government where he comes from. I wonder how somebody who couldn't win a Local Government suddenly becomes a threat to our governorship candidate.

"From all indications, I see this spurious claim as a calculated attempt not only to blackmail the government but also to dent the image of the Governor and present a wrong picture to unsuspecting Nigerians outside the State.

"I am sure that as journalists who have been covering elections long before now, you know that if indeed there is tension in Osun, it is something you will not only see but feel. You will agree with me that less than seven days to the election, there is no anxiety or tension anywhere.

"The picture that Hon. Lasun Yusuf is trying to paint is very unfortunate because Osun remains the most peaceful State in Nigeria and we will do everything humanly possible as a government to protect the enviable status.

"On behalf of the government, we are calling on the security agencies to investigate the allegation of attack because I am tempted to believe that Hon. Lasun Yusuf is planning to unleash violence on the people of Irepodun on the day of the election and is therefore using this as an excuse to prepare the grounds for his premeditated plan.

"If in the face of obvious provocation by the PDP, the major opposition in the State, who has been attacking our offices, damaging the billboards of our candidate and has come out in the open to say they are ready for fire-for-fire, we have not thought it wise to dignify them with a reprisal; if, in the face of a follow-up to that threat, a PDP candidate who is running for Osun West Senatorial District has also charged the PDP to look for cutlasses, axes, and stones to attack members of APC and we have only toed the path of the law to ask the security agencies to take them up on the satanic pronouncement, is it a feather weight opponent that we will be attacking? Hon. Lasun Yusuf's allegation obviously flies in the face of logic.

"Lasun Yusuf should stop painting a false picture. We know how he boasted that he would win the primary election and eventually lost woefully. Maybe he is already preparing excuses for his predictable loss in the forthcoming governorship election because by the grace of God, our candidate, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, will coast to victory and win the July 16 governorship election in the State", Omipidan said.

Osun 2022: "We'll assist INEC with our neutrality" - Ooni assures as Mahmud Yakubu, Osun Obas gather in Ile-Ife

The Arole Oduduwa & Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, on Tuesday pledged that traditional rulers across Osun State are prepared and ready to assist the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with neutrality to achieve a credible Gubernatorial election in the state on July 16th 2022.

Ooni Ogunwusi who is the permanent Chairman of the Osun State council of Obas gave the assurance during a special meeting with the INEC Chairman, Mahmud Yakubu and traditional rulers across the state at his Ile Oodua Palace of Ife.

Addressing the gathering, Ooni Ogunwusi explained that the traditional institution remains critical in nation building as the closest to the people, adding that the electoral commission has a lot to gain from its association with the monarchs.

"We the traditional rulers share a similar feature with your commission which is independence and neutrality. We are not politicians and that is why we have the control of all our subjects including politicians regardless of their parties.

"I must commend the INEC for their daily introduction of technology into our electoral lives, which has made rigging almost impossible. To cap it all, we now have an electoral act ammendment which complements the advancement of our leadership selection process.

"Look at the one called BVAS, the introduction of that singular device has turned around the fortune of our dear country. With the BVAS, result of the Ekiti State Gubernatorial election was declared in less than 24 hours which has never happened in the history of our dear country.

"Luckily for Nigeria and Nigerians, we have an INEC Chairman who is patriotic and well in character. My advice for the commission and its leadership is to make Nigeria their biggest project." - The Ooni stated.

Earlier in his address, the INEC boss lauded the Ooni-led Osun State Council of traditional rulers, for their roles in peacekeeping and creation of enabling environment for the conduct of elections.

Prof. Yakubu said, "We are aware that you have done a lot, I was here in 2018 during the last governorship election in Osun and I can see clearly that the atmosphere is calm, serene, quiet and I am absolutely cleared in my mind that you have done a lot to give us what we are seeing."

"We are appealing to Your Royal Highnesses to talk to the political gladiators; the politicians and their supporters to play by the rules of the game as there can never be a credible election in an atmosphere of rancor.

"Politicians and their followers must give peace a chance for the election to be conducted and concluded promptly during the remaining days of the campaign and after the election.

"We have put all measures in place to ensure that Osun people will be allowed to decide who their next governor will be. We did it in Ekiti and we are prepared to achieve more successes in the July 16 Osun guber poll.

The Orangun of Ile Ila, Oba Wahab Adedotun, Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi, Orangun of Oke Ila, Oba Abolarin Aroyinkeye and other Osun monarchs paid host to the INEC boss while the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Ganiyu Raji led staff members of the commission at the state level to the strategic engagement.

I want new tanker, not national honour, says man who saved Delta community from fire disaster

Ejiro Otarigho, a driver who drove a burning fuel tanker away from a community in Delta state, says he needs a new vehicle.

Otarigho, had last week, drove his tanker which caught fire at a residential area to a river bank.

His action and bravery earned him commendations from Nigerians, including the senate which has resolved to honour him.

The upper legislative chamber had also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to to confer Otarigho with a “befitting national honour as he may deem fit for his extraordinary act of bravery, courage and skill that prevented the loss of human lives and property on a massive scale”.

Speaking in an interview with The Punch, Otarigho said the thought of hundreds of lives and property engulfing in flames as a result of the tanker fire gave him the spunk to drive the truck to a location where there will be no disaster.

The 46-year-old who started the risky job of tanker driving about 12 years ago, said though he had received a commendation from the Delta state government, he would prefer to have his tanker replaced rather than get a national honour.

“I have received calls from them (Delta state government) but I am not interested in any national honour of any sort right now,” he said.

“I know God has brought me to a good place where my story is now being told. All I want is a replacement for my burnt tanker so I can go back to my job.

“I have just been at home and truck driving was the only way I fed. It has not been easy for me since I lost my tanker.”

Asked if he would like to get a new job and abandon the dangerous business of tanker driving, he said, “of course, I will. It is a risky job”.

“Imagine if I had died that day, nothing would have been said of me. If the government has something better for me, I will do it without looking back. All I want is to be able to take care of myself and my family legitimately,” he said

PoliticsSSG, COS, 6 Commissioners, 22 Others Resign From Dapo Abiodun's Cabinet by Hongbenga(op): 10:48am On Mar 08, 2022
No fewer than 35 political appointees of Ogun governor Dapo Abiodun, including the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, Chief of Staff Shuaibu Afolabi Salisu and political adviser Samson Egbetokun, have surreptitiously resigned their appointments, Peoples Gazette has learnt.

Some of the other appointees who have resigned, according to sources, are Tunji Akinosi, Commissioner for Forestry; Afolabi Afuape, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Adijat Adeleye-Oladapo, Special Adviser on Women Affairs; Dapo Okubadejo, Commissioner for Finance/Economic Adviser to the Governor; and Jagunmolu Omoniyi, Commissioner for Housing.

The Gazette learnt the appointees tendered their resignation in a hushed process managed by the office of the SSG. Last week, Mr Talabi’s office released a directive from the governor requiring political appointees wishing to run for office in the 2023 general elections to tender their resignation at a special desk in the SSG’s office.

It is believed that the carefully guarded process was taken to beat the clause in the newly assented Electoral Act 2022 which provides that political appointees must completely vacate their office for eligibility to participate in party primaries.

Section 84 (12) of the new electoral law provides that: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

While Messrs Salisu, Akinosi, Afuape, Okubadejo, Jagunmolu and Mrs Adeleye-Oladapo seek seats in the House of Representatives to represent Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda, Ado-Odo/Ota, Abeokuta South, Ijebu Central, Yewa South/Ipokia, and Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituencies respectively, Messrs Talabi and Egbetokun are believed to be eyeing a seat to represent Ogun East and Ogun Central respectively at the Senate.

The government has however refused to make the list of the resignees public. Both Messrs Talabi and Salisu turned down The Gazette’s requests seeking confirmation of the appointees’ resignation.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari had asked the National Assembly to delete the clause because political appointees would be disenfranchised.

“Section 84 (12) constitutes a disenfranchisement of serving political office holders from voting or being voted for at Conventions or Congresses of any political party, for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election in cases where it holds earlier than 30 days to the National Election,” the president argued.

However, on Monday, the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court stopped President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami and the Senate President Ahmad Lawan from tampering with the newly amended Electoral Act 2022.

...Thanks Osun residents for their continued support to Oyetola

... 'You have done so much for humanity, it is a pay back time', Ooni, Aromolaran, others say, endorse Asiwaju

In continuation of his consultation tour/visits to traditional rulers and eminent Nigerians across the country, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday paid homage to the reverred Yoruba traditional ruler and Imperial Majesty, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi in Ile-Ife.

The Lagos State former Governor commended the citizens and residents of Osun for their unflinching support and cooperation with the Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, in the last three years.

This is even as Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, Orangun of Ila, Oba Abdul-Wahab Oyedotun and Ajero of Ijero Kingdom, Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole, showered encomiums on Asiwaju and threw their weights behind his presidential ambition.

The reverred traditional rulers endorsed the Lagos-born politician for President, saying, "you have done so much for humanity, it is a pay back time for Nigerians to elect you."

The APC National Leader had in the last few weeks begun his consultation visits to traditional rulers and eminent Nigerians to formally inform them of his presidential ambition and receive their blessings in that regard.

The train of the APC Presidential Aspirant moved to Ile-Ife and Ilesa where he was given a tumultuous welcome and was warmly received by the leaders and members of the ruling party in the State, led by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

Speaking at the Ooni's palace, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended the traditional rulers for their unflinching cooperation and support for national integration, unity and peaceful cohesion, just as he declared his ambition to contest for the President.

He said the visit was to intimate the monarchs in particular and Nigerians in general of his ambition to run for presidential election, an ambition he described 'as timely and prompt'.

"I thank you all. I specifically thank the traditional rulers here present, I came here to seek for your prayers. I am here for your support and cooperation. You have known my intention already. You have known what I am aspiring for; all I need is your prayers.

"I have been supporting the people here and there. We have moved all over the country for one candidate or the other especially in 2013 where we campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari after his emergence, we equally supported him in 2019.

"As you all know, what the Constitution says is just two terms for a president after which another person succeeds him. That is what we are going round the country to let our people know that I am ready to succeed the incumbent President after the expiration of his second term.

"As you all know, what we are doing is to succeed him and I want to vie for President. I want to succeed Buhari and I can't do it alone without your support. I want your continued support. It is our belief that once Ooni, Orangun, Awujale, Alake, Owa, among others speak, it becomes ours. With your support, it will come to pass.

"I am determined, I am prepared and I am ready for it. God that put our traditional rulers in their various thrones will not forsake us. He will put us there. I want to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I want your continued prayers," Asiwaju added.

The APC National Leader who used the occasion of his visit to thank the people of Osun, particularly the leaders and members of the APC for their unalloyed support and cooperation with the Governor and the party over the years, said the emergence of Governor Oyetola at the recently-concluded party's primaries, was an indication of their love for his government and the ruling party.

He lauded the traditional rulers and residents for standing firmly and solidly behind the progressive government since its return to the State as demonstrated in their peaceful conduct in the just-concluded primary election of the party.

"I want to use this opportunity to thank you for nominating our Governor to re-contest. Though there were intimidation here and there before the primary, at the end of it, there was light at the end of the tunnel. So, I thank you particularly for standing by us, especially our royal fathers. I thank you for not putting our party to shame", he added.

While imploring Nigerians to continue to tow the path of unity, love, peace, greatness, togetherness and prosperity, Asiwaju Tinubu said his determination to run for presidential election was anchored on the need to consolidate on the modest achievements of President Buhari and set the nation to path of national integration and cohesion.

He tasked the citizens, particularly youths who have been aspiring to become President to champion the virtues of character, capacity, tolerance, endurance, consistency, integrity, diligence and ability to see good things and take leadership position to lead and sustain the country on the path of greatness.

In their separate remarks in their palaces, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, described Asiwaju as the pride of Yoruba race whose great impacts in the lives of humanity cannot be quantified.

The duo declared their readiness to support Asiwaju's ambition, saying he has paid his dues to be duly rewarded.

"You have done so much for humanity to be elected President. You have made so many people in different capacities. You have done so well as a distinguished Nigerian. God has blessed you and you have used every stratum of your opportunity to advance humanity and develop capacity for generations. We are very happy to receive you today.

"You are our pride. You are our star. You are our moon. You are a rare gem at the moment and we pray God to continue to strengthen you and imbue you with all that will work for you to succeed", Ooni said.

Owa, on his part, said Asiwaju Tinubu remains a true democrat that the nation needs at the moment in view of his noble contributions to national growth and development.

In his brief remarks, the Governor of Osun, Adegboyega Oyetola expressed gratitude to the people of the State, particularly the APC loyalists for renewing their confidence in his Administration as demonstrated in the last primary election.

He expressed confidence in the ability, capacity and competence of Asiwaju to take the nation to promised land.

Speaker Gbajabiamila launches probe of Aregbesola over stolen N165 billion prison fund

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, a staunch loyalist of presidential aspirant Bola Tinubu, has initiated a vast corruption probe of interior minister Rauf Aregbesola at the House of Representatives.

Mr Gbajabiamila presided over the plenary on Wednesday where it was decided that Mr Aregbesola and prisons chief Haliru Nababa should be probed for mismanaging up to N165 billion in funds earmarked for prisons development across the country.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by Ndudi Elumelu, the minority leader of the House on the floor of the House on Wednesday in Abuja. In his argument, Mr Elumelu criticised the welfare of the workforce

“The House is disturbed that despite this Act and increase in budgetary allocations to the Nigerian Correctional Service to drive its renewed mandate, the tempo and quality of the Service have remained the same if not retrogressing,” Mr Elumelu said. “The House is worried that the working conditions of Staff and inmates’ welfare have deteriorated notwithstanding the over N165 billion budget allocations to the Service in the last two years.”

The legislators resolved to have its committee on Reformatory Institutions investigate the allegations and report to the House within 12 weeks for further legislative action.

The move comes as Messrs Aregbesola and Tinubu are slugging it out publicly over the power tussle in Osun state. On Monday, Mr Aregbesola was at a political rally where Mr Tinubu was severely derided, including being mocked over the viral video that many said amounted to public urination on his body.

Mr Aregbesola has been locked in a fierce political fray with his former chief of staff and successor, Gboyega Oyetola, accusing him and Mr Tinubu of conniving to destroy his legacy in Osun. PoliticsLadoja Throws Support For Lekan Balogun To Become Olubadan, Appeals For Calm by Hongbenga(op): 5:06pm On Jan 06, 2022
Breaking: Ladoja Throws Support For Lekan Balogun to Become Olubadan, Appeals for Calm

Former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, the Osi Olubadan of Ibadan, has breaking silence over the controversy surrounding who replaces Oba Saliu Adetunji as the new monarch

Ladoja who made the clarification when he received visitors at his Bodija house, said the Otun Olubadan, Lekan Balogun is the next in line to succeed the departed Oba Adetunji.

Appealing for calm the high chief declared, “uninformed people are just causing unnecessary tensions in Ibadan. There is no controversy about who becomes the next Olubadan after the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji Aje Ogunguniso 1”.

This was just to clarify that he had no hand in the letter written by an Ibadan-born lawyer and former justice commissioner, Barr. Michael Lana

It could be recalled that with the exemption of Ladoja, Balogun and others have been elevated to Obaship status by the administration of late former governor Abiola Ajimobi, an action that is subject of litigation and discussion in Ibadan.

Only yesterday, 10 of the high chiefs, met at Mapo and endorsed Balogun as Olubadan-elect. Only Ladoja was absent

PoliticsBawa’s EFCC Focuses On Scammers, Fails To Arraign Ex-Governors, VIPs by Hongbenga(op): 7:07pm On Dec 12, 2021
Bawa’s EFCC focuses on scammers, fails to arraign ex-govs, VIPs

ALMOST 10 months in the saddle as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa-led anti-graft agency has not arraigned any politically exposed persons and other Very Important Persons for money laundering and embezzlement of public funds.

While the commission has been going after suspected cyber scammers and other petty criminals, it has yet to take those facing allegations of stealing billions of naira of public funds to court.

Bawa was appointed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in February after his predecessor, Ibrahim Magu, was removed for alleged corruption.

The appointment of the 40-year-old from Kebbi State was believed to have been influenced by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, who also hailed from the state.

Investigations by our correspondent indicate that since assuring office, the EFCC under Bawa has been fixated with cyber scammers popularly known as Yahoo boys, with operatives storming hotels at odd hours on raids.

For instance, in July, the commission arrested 30 suspects during a raid on a hotel in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

The operatives were alleged to have gained entry into the occupants’ rooms by seizing the master cards from the hotel management at gunpoint.

About 24 occupants were said to have been arraigned for cyber scam after the raid.

In the early hours of September 14, the commission also raided three hotels in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and arrested 56 lodgers.

In the last 10 months, over 50 suspects arrested for cyber scam in various cities have been prosecuted or were facing trial.

While this is commendable, checks show that the anti-graft commission has not exerted the same energy in bringing VIPs, who pocketed billions of naira, to justice.

The arraignment of a former Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, failed to hold at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on November 22, following a letter from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, calling for the review if the case.

Oduah, who currently represents Anambra North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, and eight others, were to be arraigned by the EFCC on alleged N5bn fraud.

The defence counsel, Oguh Onoja, told Justice Inyang Ekwo that there was a letter from the AGF to the EFCC for the review of the matter, but that the anti-graft agency had refused to return the case file as requested by Malami

Also, on October 16, a former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, was interrogated over alleged non-remittance of N10bn pensions fund.

The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain reportedly turned himself in at the EFCC headquarters, after previously snubbing several invitations from the commission.

On October 24, the agency detained for a few days a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, in connection with the allegations against the former aviation minister, Stella Oduah.

On July 28, the EFCC quizzed and detained a former Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura and his wife, Mairo, for misappropriation of billions of naira while in office.

Three days later, it questioned a former president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, over alleged misappropriation of public funds and money laundering.

Similarly, a former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, was on November 12 invited and quizzed for three days for allegedly diverting N1.6bn public funds.

None of these suspects have been arraigned in court.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa said the EFCC did not have an effective strategy to combat money laundering.

The financial intelligence agency established by the Economic Community of West Africa States in its 2021 Mutual Evaluation Report, stated that the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering, has a presence in only nine out of the 36 states in the country with 60 permanent and 43 ad hoc personnel.

It said, “SCUML is yet to implement a comprehensive risk-based framework for the supervision of all DNFBPs (Designated Non-Financial Business and Professions) currently registered with it.

“The number of entities registered with SCUML (more than 72,000) and the high but unknown number of unregistered DNFBPs impedes its ability to conduct effective monitoring for AML/CFT (Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism) purposes. SCUML does not have an effective strategy to deal with this challenge.”

The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached for comment as calls to his phone rang out. He had yet to respond to an SMS seeking his comments on the failure of the commission to arraign prominent Nigerians.

PoliticsWhy Buhari Did Not Pick Tinubu As Vice President - Pa Bisi Akande by Hongbenga(op): 3:00pm On Dec 10, 2021
Why Buhari Did Not Pick Tinubu As Vice President - Pa Bisi Akande at his book launch in Lagos

Akande stated that he later came to know that some people constituted themselves into a group, called the Northern Interest Group, and they prevailed on Buhari not to allow a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

According to him, it was the following day after the Elders’ Committee meeting which was deadlocked, that Buhari phoned Tinubu to give him three names from which he would pick a running mate.

“We were all in Abuja and Tinubu rushed to me with this information. He wanted to know whether the understanding we reached with Buhari had changed. I called Buhari and he told me he now needed three names from us. I was angry with him.

‘‘General, this was not what we agreed upon,’ I said in annoyance. ‘You are changing our agreement?’ He knew I was getting angry. He said he was under pressure from some governors from the north, including those who were Muslims. I told him the slot belonged to the South-West and among the Yoruba, religion is not a factor in leadership,” he said.

Akande added: “Oshiomhole was surprised about the narration. ‘If indeed you promised to make Asiwaju your running mate, it would not be fair to renege,’ he said. Buhari now said he never meant it that way. What he meant originally was that Tinubu should partner with him.”

The former Osun governor explained that he didn’t know what that meant because before they discussed the issue of Tinubu as the partner or vice-president’s ticket, a merger had been accomplished and they had already partnered.

“We were registered in July 2013, and he called me to prevail on Tinubu to be his running mate in April 2014. Buhari knew I was upset but we tried to manage the situation. Perhaps he was overwhelmed by all those pressures. We decided to let him go,” Akande said.
