WebmastersRe: What Is The Easiest Way To Learn Dreamweaver by hostmot(f): 11:01pm On Nov 24, 2009
Honestly, I feel even if one should learn dreamweaver, he should get a hang of html first.

To me, using dreamweaver with knowing html is like using a programming IDE without any programming knowledge because the IDE is so fantastic and easy to use.

You really really really could get a hang HTML in 3 days through online tutorials and move to dreamweaver from there. It will make your life easier in the future.

WebmastersRe: What Is The Cost Price Of Having A Forum. by hostmot(f): 9:20am On Nov 24, 2009
The cost price of having a forum = the cost price of webhosting

Every web hosting company worth its salt has some form of script in the control panel through which you can install smf or phpbb.

Its getting the forum known through adverts and seo that eats money.

About your phpbb problem. Download and install xampp or wampserver, put your extracted phpbb folder into the www folder and navigate to it on your web browser.

If you have more questions, feel free to post it here.

Do not start with Dreamweaver for any reason whatsoever. It will kill your innovation and make you lazy in the long run.

Proof: The people who offer the most sensible webmaster help on Nairaland did not start with Dreamweaver.

Start with the xhtml/css collabo like Dual Core said. smiley

Are you looking to hire a developer or are you looking for help with your code?

Post as an advert if looking for a developer, and post the problematic part of your code if looking for help.

That way, you can get valuable information depending on what you want.

WebmastersRe: Object Oriented CSS [Bad Practice Or Not]? by hostmot(f): 8:55am On Nov 24, 2009
It is not a bad practice.

Web elitists just don't like the fact that you can use multiple classes for a single element.

You will love this thing especially when you are trying to develop an interface for a web application. It also helps with good usage of css sprites and all,

If it improves your productivity and work flow, by all means, use it!

You can actually start by reading the help files within your dreamweaver application. Its arranged sequentially like a book and even comes with top-notch tutorials to help you get a good hang of the application.

Well, AFAIK, that site is not powered by a script, that is a parked domain.

Just buy a domain name, go to to sedoparking or any other parking agency of repute and leave it there.

What you want to do require tweaking some css and you need to get someone who knows about it to do that for you so you do not mess anything up.

If you feel you are up to the task, just google "changing layouts"

WebmastersRe: Help On Joomla by hostmot(f): 8:15am On Nov 24, 2009
What you are requiring is actually a lot. You will have to enter the soul of joomla, modify it, use some ajax on the frontend (if you want comments to be compacted and pulled on clicking like in facebook).

If you cannot find a premade plugin for this, it would be better if you used jomsocial as it is.

If you still want to give it a go, post areas of the code that seem daunting to you and someone might be able to help.

WebmastersRe: How To Start An Online Radio Station by hostmot(f): 8:12am On Nov 24, 2009
Running an online radio station as it is quite expensive.

If you are not using the ultra-expensive live365 (you actually need a sound business model before jumping into it), then you will need an expensive hardware on which to host your streaming server (e.g. shoutcast) and they even limit the amount of concurrent listeners you can host until you upgrade.

So, if you plan to run an online radio station as it is, be ready to cough up a lot of cash. If you already have lots f cash, live365 is the way to o for as you will not need to worry about streaming server configurations.

WebmastersRe: How Could I Code The Printing Of Only A Section Of A Web Page by hostmot(f): 8:05am On Nov 24, 2009
Yeah!

As yawa-ti-de as said, the stylesheet route rules! It really has nothing to do with the programming language you are using.

You can just hide elements you don't want printed in your print.css and check formatting to look good on printout. The key is in testing.

WebmastersRe: Bye Bye Ie6 by hostmot(f): 11:41pm On Nov 03, 2009
Honestly, IE6 should have been phased out but as Microsoft has decided to inflict pain on developers and designers alike, it is the default browser on Windows XP upon which 60% of computers in Nigeria still run (especially cybercafes).

So, blocking your website totally for IE6 users is tantamount to suicide.

You can just post an upgrade message as the top of your content like facebook and youtube does and all will be well.

I still maintain that Microsoft should be sued for the depression they have visited on designers around the world due to IE6 wahala.

WebmastersRe: Which Postal Code Did You Use For Lagos With Google Adsense Registration by hostmot(f): 9:46pm On Oct 29, 2009
Just type any number you feel like. Once the country location is Nigeria, the Zip code part does not throw up any error during the validation process. If you don't feel like typing numbers, just type "NONE".

You know, the way Nigerian companies try to brand themselves as being IT compliant can be hilarious at times. The talk of this CD has been going on in the Nation for a very long time. They were even talking about compiling adverts on CD.

Not that the ideas themselves are not novel, they actually lack a sense of direction and I feel they only have a little impact on the company's branding. If a publishing company is going to give out freebies, let them give publishing-related freebies.

Poser: Why does Thisday Style make Sunday Thisday sell like crazy? My sister only buys newspapers on sundays and you can guess the one she buys.

That sir, is the bane of the internet.

Intellectual property is hard to protect once it gets online even in those countries you have mentioned.

Concerning the topic, like my predecessors have pointed out, I would google for flash obfuscators and tutorials on how to prevent flash theft.

Make sure you follow switch47's post bumper to bumper.

Also, make sure you read comprehensively on how to generate money from websites and forum and develop a viable on how to achieve this. Running a forum is not as easy as it seems especially at the beginning. Sometimes, you will end up spending more money than you earn over a period of time. But then, you have to give it a shot because as it goes; Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

WebmastersRe: I Need A Big Assist In Php. by hostmot(f): 9:26pm On Oct 29, 2009
By downloading wampserver, you are on your first step to coding greatness.

There's absolutely no use trying to install servers and scripting languages manually if all you are going to do is web development. Its only sensible if you are a server admin or you want to test server configs before replicating them on your remote server.

If you want to progress more in php, head back to sourceforge, download scripts to do fancy stuff that you like, test run them on your local server (the wampserver you installed) and take a peek into the files to learn coding constructs and file architecture.

Bon Voyage on your coding adventures!

WebmastersRe: Reliable Nigeria Web Host by hostmot(f): 9:20pm On Oct 29, 2009
Concerning Interswitch,

They also blast "never send your pin" adverts on Adsense and Facebook in the hope stemming down the effect of ATM spam email. The end result is that users will get unnecessarily jittery and won't make payments on your site (they will start thinking its another forged site.)

Sometimes, I wonder the kind of people they hire at these kind of companies. All they need to is send a representative to Yahoo and tell them to filter out the generic titles of the ATM spam emails like they filter out emails with titles like "Acai trial" or "Hot girl wants to chat with you".

WebmastersRe: Is There Any Specific Difference Btw .com And .com.ng by hostmot(f): 9:14pm On Oct 29, 2009
They are both top level domains.

.com is generic and is used worldwide while .com.ng is for Nigerians.

So you can understand better, .com.ng is Nigeria, .co.za is for South Africa, .co.uk is for Britain, .us is for United States and .ca is for Canada.

If your brandname is your domain name and is very important to you, you can buy both the .com and .com.ng versions.

One more thing, Google places more importance on .com.ng. (seriously, I researched).

WebmastersRe: Wordpress Vs Joomla,drupal Etc by hostmot(f): 9:11pm On Oct 29, 2009
Actually, Wordpress has more plugins, widgets, templates, support e.t.c. than any other CMS out there.

But in the real sense of it, like yawa has said, it is your needs that will determine your final choice. In most cases, wordpress is an excellent CMS but there are situations where Joomla and Drupal beats it hands down.

You can always post your needs and the good members of this forum will help you make a grand choice.

Most Nigerian web hosts are not terrible. Some are, just like there are foreign hosts who are terrible.

For any product or service you will purchase online, it is your responsibility to make proper research and ask questions before making a purchase just like the poster has done.

There are good Nigerian web hosts and their are bad Nigerian web hosts. Whichever you choose depends on your sniff-o-meter.

WebmastersRe: How To Register A Domain Name Free And Host It Free For Life With Email Address by hostmot(f): 9:00pm On Oct 29, 2009
As Rufaai as said, there can never be free domain names.

If you don't believe, try registering your business in real life at CAC for free.

As for .co.cc, it is not a free domain, it is a free subdomain. If Nigeria's top level domain was .ng, I could buy co.ng and give free subdomains to people as an incentive for hosting or any other thing. Please, correct me if I am wrong.

I think Mbeki is trying to connect his Microsoft Outlook list with that on his website.

That cannot be done as far as I know (but anything can be possible these days since the web came around).

You would have to choose between manual creation on outlook and automatic subscription on your website.

For automatic subscription, try yawa-ti-de's logic or phplist as someone suggested. If its too tough for you, hire a coder.

If you are a web developer, dreamweaver design view is not for you. Honestly. You will always be behind your peers. The coder view is great with it intellisense and other fancy stuff, but there are definitely better options out there.

BTW, Has anybody ever given E-text editor a shot? Its Textmate for Windows (anybody ever gotten some Textmate+Mac envy when you watch those sweet Ruby on Rails screencasts?). You can also go for the free option; intype which is not as powerful but nevertheless has the uncluttered interface the pureblood developers love. So, what do these three softwares have in common? Out of this world code completion so you won't have to type those ever-repetitive braces, brackets, ifs, and elses. smiley
