Grieving Zimbabean nationals Theresa Ngwendu, 30, and Tinashe Zisani, 31, lost their son after he fell to his death during birth inside the maternity ward of the Mamelodi Hospital, east of Pretoria.

A newborn fell to his death at Mamelodi Hospital, east of Pretoria, after nurses allegedly refused to help his mother, who gave birth while standing.

Theresa Ngwendu, 30, the Zimbabwean mother, told Sowetan yesterday that she was rushed to the hospital a week ago as she was about to go into labour.

She said a nurse at the hospital refused to assist her on arrival and told her “this is not Zimbabwe”. Her water reportedly broke inside the maternity ward around 6 am.



“My baby came out while I was standing after the nurse refused to assist me. I was in pain while also bleeding,” Ngwendu

She said her baby’s head fell out onto the hospital floor and was immediately declared dead by the nursing staff afterwards.

Ngwendu said she had started bleeding inside the taxi on her way to the hospital. She was travelling with her husband, Tinashe Zisani. The hospital was the closest one to her rented backroom in Nellmapius, across the railway line from Mamelodi.

“When I got inside the maternity ward, I told the nurse that I’m in pain, she just ignored me,” Ngwendu said. “I told her again that I’m in pain and I think my baby is coming.

The nurse said: ‘close your legs and go there…’ and the baby came out while I was still standing there.”

Ngwendu said the baby landed forcefully on the floor and the impact left an indentation on the newborn’s forehead.

The hospital’s CEO Dr Terrence Makhudu said he viewed the allegations in a serious light and has launched an investigation.

“We met the family… to allow them to present their concerns and unhappiness with the service rendered and to redress the matter,” Makhudu said.



He said the hospital gave an “explanation… relating to the condition that leads to the death of their baby but they (parents) were dissatisfied.”

When asked about that explanation, Makhudu said: “I cannot disclose that information as it goes against doctor/ patient confidentiality.”

Zisani, 31, told Sowetan they were told by one of the senior nurses at the hospital that their baby was already dead before birth. He said they were looking forward to welcoming their first child.

He showed Sowetan some of the new clothes they had bought in preparation for the baby’s arrival.

Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Maheso confirmed that an investigation has been opened with the Mamelodi East police station.

“The body was taken to a government mortuary for a postmortem, and we are still awaiting results thereof,” said Maheso said.

I’ve taken my time to read through your comments on twitter and Instagram, Cuppy… you know what, you’re loved and appreciated by many, the few people who seem not to love you have two things in common;

They don’t like you because they feel you’re not talented ‘in singing’, and secondly, your father is too rich for them to believe, hence they beef what you have for they simply don’t have your father as theirs.

I’ve also had issues with your singing ability in the past, but you’ve proven yourself to be a work in progress and you’ve moved from that lady who struggles while singing to being commander-in-chief of music – at DJ level.

As a matter of fact, you’re better than most of your counterparts in the industry.

Most Nigerian DJs just make a hell of a noise in their own music than to drop a meaningful verse, but this isn’t you, Cuppy gives us reasonable lyrics and sings her heart out in her own songs.

Unlike many DJs who feature musicians to dominate their songs for them, your own type of feature is different, you collaborate with them and share the verses, and still deliver stunningly, despite being a DJ.

If anyone feels the need to label you talentless, I’m sure they are the ones who don’t understand what it means to be talented.

They need to check out your collaboration with Tekno on ‘Green Light’, your duet with Sarkodie on ‘Vybe’, just to mention a few, maybe they will have a change of mind, calm their heads and grab ‘Gelato’.

And for those trolling you for your father’s wealth, you have no reason to bother yourself about them. Many people will troll you for being a rich kid, and just for absolutely nothing. Is it your fault your father, Femi Otedola is wealthy? Or are you the reason your father is not their father?

You need to wake up, don’t be too clouded by your emotions because the few negative comments are getting at you (real hard), instead, focus on those who love you and keep doing you.

The Federal High Court Abuja, on Monday, refused to grant a request stopping President Muhammadu Buhari from inaugurating the 43 ministerial nominees over the exclusion of an FCT indigene from his cabinet list.

The applicant, Mr Musa Baba-panya, who was also the counsel in the case, had, on Thursday, approached the court with an exparte motion, asking the court to stop the president from going ahead on the inauguration.

In suit number: FHC/ABJ/CS/878/19, Baba-panya, who is also an indigene of Karu in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said the president’s action was contrary to an Appeal Court’s judgment delivered on March 15, 2018.

President Buhari is the 1st defendant while the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) is the 2nd defendant in the case.

Baba-panya, who argued that the Appeal Court’s ruling was a compelling order, said it was served on the president through the AGF.

The lawyer, in an originating summon dated Aug. 7 and filed Aug. 8, said that, ”the 43 confirmed ministerial appointees now awaiting swearing-in or inauguration as the Federal Executive Council is incomplete, illegal, unconstitutional, null, void and of no effect whatsoever.”

Justice Taiwo Taiwo, however, noted that the suit was coming rather too late and therefore there might be no reason to stop the inauguration.

Buhari would swear-in the 43 ministers-designate earlier confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 21 at the Federal Executive Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Anambra indigenes living in India have expressed worry over the rising number of Nigerian girls brought into the country for prostitution, saying that the anomaly has reached its height.

Mr Ikenna Aniagboso, a member Anambra Association in New Delhi, India, stated this in a recent radio interview, monitored by DAILY POST.

Aniagboso, who spoke on Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, said most young girls of between 14 and 18 years were being trafficked into India under the guise of giving them jobs, but they end up as prostitutes.

He said, “This new trend is giving Anambra people living in India a cause for concern. Almost on a daily basis, young girls are rescued and taken to the Nigerian Embassy in New Delhi.

“That is why we decided to come home to enlighten our people not to fall for scams by some human traffickers who promise parents job for their daughters, only to take them to India for prostitution.

“Indians like black women, and you know that especially here in Anambra, our women have full shapes that excite Indians. The new trend among Indians is that once they bring a black girl home, they call their friends to come and join them. This is so humiliating for we who live and work genuinely there.”

Aniagboso said that in most cases, the trafficked girls are made to keep working until the person that brought them to the country has recovered their expenses made on them and also made profit of a million Naira, before the girl is allowed to work for themselves.

He called on the state governnent to also intervene, while calling for strict interrogation by parents before accepting to give away their mature daughters to be take abroad.

The Benue Police Command has confirmed the killing of four persons in the early hours of Saturday at a burial in Tongov district of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.

The commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mukaddas Garba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Makurdi, that the incident occurred during the burial of one late Tor Amaafu.

Garba said the police had commenced investigation into the matter, assuring that the perpetrators would be brought to book.

He urged the public to assist the police with relevant information that would lead to the culprits arrest.

An eyewitness told NAN that the gunmen, who numbered over 10, opened fire on the mourners and killed many while others sustained injuries in the process.

The Borno State government has donated some part of Sambisa forest for the controversial Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) programme.



The state governor, Professor Babagana Umara, made the donation public when he hosted the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Garbai El-Kanemi at his home. According to the Governor, the donation is to “encourage farming and herding activities across the state.”



He also said that his government would deploy an Emergency Rapid Response Team (ERRT), comprising of security personnel, 500 troops and hunters that know the terrain of the forest, to protect commuters and rural dwellers against Boko Haram insurgents and bandits,


According to a report by Thisday, the governor said; “this administration is determined to strengthen the security architecture to encourage farming and herding activities across the state.

We’re also distributing 80 patrol vehicles to the response team so that farmers, herders and commuters could move as well as travel within a radius of 30-40 kilometres of Maiduguri metropolis.

About 75 trained agro rangers and 300 hunters will also be mobilised next week to enable farmers cultivate their farmlands that were prevented by terrorists’ activities.

The state government is determined to address the root causes of insurgency through improved security; fight against drug abuse and enhance food security with increased job creation among unemployed youths.”

The Kaduna State Police Command has said no serious crime took place during the just-concluded Eid -el-Kabir celebration in the state.



The command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Yakubu Sabo made this known in Kaduna on Wednesday, August 14th saying;

We had a hitch-free Eid-el-Kabir celebration, we did not record any ugly incident during the period. The celebration was done without any serious criminal incident or breach of law. We also thank the public for the support given to us during the period”.

According to Sabo, the residents cooperated and supported security agencies in monitoring the security situation, thereby facilitating peace throughout the period of the festivity. Sabo urged the general public to continue to support the police in their efforts to rid the state of criminals.

Goods worth several millions of naira have been destroyed in a midnight fire that razed the biggest motor spare parts market in Edo State located at Uwelu, in Egor Local Government Area of the state.



The fire was said to have started at about 11:45pm Monday night, August 12th and lasted till about 4am after efforts from fire service men from the University of Benin and the Nigerian Army.


Sections of the market affected by the fire were the lines were Mercedes Benz, Mazda, Ford and Toyota parts are sold. It was gathered that some of the affected traders just bought goods to fill their stores. Some of the traders were said to have collapsed when they visited the scene and saw the magnitude of their losses.


One of them was said to have attempted running into the raging fire, but was stopped. One of the victims, Daniel Okungbowa, who deals in all types fuel and oil pumps, said he lost goods worth about N4 million to the fire. Another victim, Osaeruoname Festus, said they we’re yet to ascertain the cause of the fire and wondered how the fire spread rapidly when there was no power supply to the market.

According to him, “We are yet to ascertain what actually led to the fire. We could not remove anything from our shops. Many boys who just got freedom from their masters and opened? their shops, are yet to repay the loans they took from various banks.”

Chairman of Spare Parts Dealers Association, Augustine Ibie Osaretin, said the fire incident had compounded the low patronage they were currently witnessing due to bad roads that led to the market. He added that the four security guard hired by the traders were being questioned by the police.



Osaretin said he received an anonymous call that the market was on fire and that when he called the security personnel on ground, he was told that it was somebody burning something in a nearby street.

When the security man told me somebody was burning something, I told him to check properly and he told me it was the line where my shop is located that was on fire. I called the Edo State Fire Service, but they did not come. The entire market would have been razed if fire men had not come from UNIBEN and the Nigerian Army.

“For now, we do not suspect any foul play, but we have held a meeting to appease those affected and stood any suicidal attempt. We beg the state government to rebuild the market because we are using loan from micro-finance bank,” he said.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has indicted the management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi for the tragic collapse of a bridge in the school leading to the death of three students and others injured.

The association, among others, demanded compensations to the families of the students that lost their lives to the tragic incidence on Aug. 3 and award of admissions and scholarships to qualified members of their families.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, National President of the association, Mr Danielson Akpan, specifically indicted the school management for negligence.

He said, following the death of the three students during a heavy downpour leading to bridge collapse in ATBU, the Executive Council of NANS was constituted which went round the school to identify the causes of the tragedy.

He said the executive council of the association, having assessed the site of the collapsed bridge, identified negligence on the part of the school management as a major cause of the tragic collapse of the bridge.

“The Students Union Government was able to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that they drew the attention of the management to the state of the bridge and the need to address it immediately.

“This was ignored by the management and the result was the death of students on Aug. 3.

“Secondly, we also discovered a serious disconnection and communication gap between the management of ATBU and the Students Union Government (SUG) as a major reason for inaction on the part of management,’’ he said.

Akpan, called on the management of ATBU to tender unreserved written apology to the families of the victims of the bridge collapse.

“The management of ATBU must take the full cost of medical bills of those injured during the bridge collapse.

“The school management must also reschedule examination and tests at convenient time after full recovery for those affected, who missed any exams or test as a result of injuries sustained.

“A suitable and standard bridge must be constructed to replace the collapsed bridge at the earliest possible time to ease movement of students from hostel to lecture halls,’’ he said.

Sir Diamond Ovueraye, Supreme Knight of the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM), Nigeria, has urged the Buhari government to curb activities of murderous herdsmen by establishing regional policing to combat security challenges facing the country.

He said that when the government establishes regional policing, it would help tackle security challenges facing Nigeria.

“Herdsmen are on rampage even in the western region, killing and kidnapping people, this must stop, government at all levels need to tackle it seriously, and make sure that there is security in the country.

“What we need to consider is the possibility of having regional security forces; what we can call regional policing,” Ovueraye said.

The supreme knight, who explained what the fourth degree investiture means, said that the fourth degree was different from the other degrees in the KSM.

Worried by the increasing rate of Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians residing in South Africa, President Buhari will in October pay his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, a visit to discuss issues relating to wellbeing of citizens and ways to further strengthen trade relations between the two largest African economies.



A statement released by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Garba Shehu today August 10th, says President Buhari had a telephone conversation with Ramaphosa today where he accepted an invitation to visit the country. According to the state, the visit is to further “consider recurrent issues concerning wellbeing of the Nigerian community in South Africa, and the need to promote trade and investment.’’



In an earlier letter of invitation, the South African President said:

Pastor Enoch Adeboye while preaching at the Holy Ghost Service of the Redeemed Christian Church of God 67th Annual Convention on Friday August 9, recalled how God told him about the danger Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was in before the helicopter crash he survived in February with his team in Kabba area of Kogi State.



According to the RCCG General Overseer, God whispered to him while in his prayer room that his son (Yemi Osinbajo) was in danger.

“I got the message but I didn’t know how to present it,” he said. “He was going around on political campaigns so I didn’t know how to stop him. I also didn’t want him to be scared so I resorted to praying for him.”

The General Overseer said he prayed for two minutes, repeating “Father, protect your son,” four times.

Recall that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in his testimony after the February crash he escaped unhurt, said he did not understand why the pastor repeated the prayer of safety for him.

“I briefed him on the progress we have made with the campaign and then the General Overseer prayed for God’s protection for me in all my travels and movements.

The Nigerian Communications Commissions (NCC) has just sanctioned two major Telecommunications operators in the country over infractions.

The affected network providers, Airtel and 9mobile were hit with a fine totalling N136 million.

The NCC according to its first-quarter enforcement report, said that the network operators had flouted several regulations of the industry. The regulations are said to include an automatic renewal of data subscription, and the wrongful disconnection of an internet carrier as well as disregarding the do-not-disturb (DND) directive.

The Commission stated that Airtel was found wanting in its Quality of Service regulation by disconnecting Exchange Telecommunications Limited, an interconnect carrier, without getting the necessary approval.

NCC thereby announced that Airtel had been slammed with a fine totaling N121m.

The telecoms regulator had last year, issued a directive to all the network providers in the country asking them to carry out the automatic and unwarranted renewal of data packages without the consent of their followers, thereby forcing them on subscription to value-added services.

A dean of one of the science-based faculties of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) is currently under investigation for soliciting sex to award marks to one of his female students.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when the senior univeristy lecturer was set up in a hotel in Gwarimpa area of Abuja, where he had gone to have an affair with the student.

According to Daily Trust, the student who was being disturbed by the faculty dean for sexual relationship, had reported the matter to the university’s security unit as well as the police.

The dean would fail the student in a course he was taking unless she agreed to have sex with him.

The security agents were said to have asked the lady to play along, which led to the professor booking a hotel room in the highbrow Gwarimpa quarters to sleep with the student.

“The dean was caught pants down in the hotel room trying to have sex with the student,” the source said.

This online news medium understands that although the university community falls under the responsibility of Lugbe Police Station, the sting operation and the arrest was handled by the police station in Gwarimpa.

“He was taken to the police station that night and made to give a statement,” Daily Trust quotes the source as saying.

The source said the university was keeping the scandal under wraps which was the reason it did not go public since.

“Very few in the university know this has happened between the dean and his student and that is why other details of it are not available.”

It was gathered that the incident may have happened about four weeks ago when the students of the institution were taking first semester examinations for the 2018/2019 academic session.

Students resumed for the second semester last Monday after a two-week break that followed the exams.

The Chief Security Officer of the university, Ibrahim Abdullahi Buga, could not be reached as his phone was switched off.

But a source in the security department confided that the management of the university had set up a committee to investigate the alleged sexual assault on the student.

The acting Information Officer of the university, Hajiya Maryam Mohammed, while confirming the setting up of the committee said the staff in question had been queried.

“You know the man in question has been issued a query as a panel has been constituted to listen to him in order to give him a fair hearing.

“That’s where we are right now because we have to wait for the committee to do something about it.

“So I cannot tell you anything again until the committee finishes its work and as soon as there is anything, I will let you know,” she added.

Also commenting on the alleged act, the Federal Capital Territory police commissioner, Bala Ciroma, confirmed that the police had received a report of an alleged sexual assault from a female student of the institution.

The commissioner said the FCT police are investigating the matter.
