INTERNSHIP AND EXTERNSHIP…ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW AS A STUDENT One of the best ways to position yourself for a job, whether as a student or as a graduate, is to build your work experience. The more work experience you have, the stronger a candidate you’ll be when it comes to job searching and selection. Internships and Externships are one of the ways you can build such work experience because they provide an opportunity to add to your skillset, explore new career fields, navigate the business world, and gain professional work experience that you can include on your resume. What is an Internship? This is the position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay, to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification. It is a short-term position that provides students and graduates with the opportunity to gain skills and experience in a hands-on work environment. Internships are available in a wide variety of career fields, including business, technology, education, government, and nonprofit organizations. Career / Do You Have Any Questions? by hothire(f): 2:10pm On Feb 09, 2021 |
As an applicant, the answer to this is YES. But the difference lies in the type of questions you will like to ask, whether as an experienced or inexperienced applicant. As an inexperienced applicant, you might feel a bit intimidated and nervous in the presence of the recruiter, especially if it is a panel style interview. The feeling of fear might want to make you squash the urge to ask any question. Not to worry, below is a guide you can apply in asking your questions. QUESTIONS TO ASK A NEWBIE Firstly, you need to understand that an interview is a two-way thing. You are both there to find out or know more about each other. And this can only be possible by asking questions. So start by thanking your interviewer for the time and opportunity granted you to be in there. Saying this will help calm and relax you. Secondly, you can further ask about the Job Timing; remember you are in an interview for a job. You need to know the company's resumption time and when they close for the day. The break period, number of work-days in the week, Overtime practice/allowance. Education / Do You Have A Development Plan? by hothire(f): 1:33pm On Jan 28, 2021 |
"Whether you succeed or fail in life; depends on the plan you have or do not have"- Myles Munroe First of all... What is a Development plan? The Development Plan is a document that provides planners with guidelines to follow during the development assessment process. A Developmental assessment is a process that measures a child's attainment of physical or cognitive skills that allow continued maturation, learning, and function in society. There are 6 Stages of the Assessment Process, which are discussed extensively in our eBook (Your Customized Guide To Immediate Employment) Based on our discussion, Development is a process that creates growth, progress, positive change, or the addition of physical, economic, environmental, social, and demographic components. When we apply this definition to Career Development, we define it as a dynamic planning document intended to reflect your increased career development learning. The plan helps you: Set goals Clarify the actions needed to achieve these goals. Commit to participating in the planned activities We can simply define a Career Action Plan as a roadmap that will take you from point 1 to point 2. Point 1 is the process of choosing your career /vocation to Point 2 getting a job in your chosen career and advancing in it. Also referred to as an Individualized (or Individual) Career Development Plan, it will help you reach your career goals. Career / Using Self Assessment To Answer Interview Questions by hothire(f): 11:01am On Jan 14, 2021 |
USING SELF ASSESSMENT TO ANSWER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS “He or she who gets hired is not the one who can do that job best; But, the one who knows the most on how to get hired”… Richard Lathrop. In recruitment settings, you should expect to provide evidence of the skills or capabilities that you claim. You will be required to reflect on your experiences and accomplishments to draw examples. The Self Assessment is a method used for analyzing learning accomplishments, as it allows you to clearly and concisely structure your reflections. Graduate employers expect you to use this technique to answer questions during an interview or in a job application form. Using this approach will ensure that you demonstrate how you apply your skills, how you make things happen, and the results you obtained. You can use the Self Assessment to structure your answers. NYSC / Explaining Gaps Of Unemployment In Your Resume by hothire(f): 1:40pm On Jan 12, 2021 |
WHY HAVE YOU BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR SUCH A LONG TIME? A job interview session is usually an opportunity for the “employer” through the recruiter (the human resources officer or manager) to assess you. It is an avenue to check to see if you are the right fit for their organization. Irrespective of whether you are an entry-level graduate, experienced or not. This question will come up depending on the role or position you applied for, especially if there is a gap of an unemployed period in your resume. 90% of graduates usually see this as an opportunity to show that they are willing to work, but answer this question with ” I COULDN’T FIND A JOB” This is a WRONG ANSWER! They fail to understand the difference between being willing or available for work from being unemployed over a long period. NYSC / Professionalism In The Workplace by hothire(f): 12:56pm On Jan 07, 2021 |
STARTING A NEW JOB Professionalism in the Workplace How to Conduct Yourself on the Job What is Professionalism? This can be defined as an individual's conduct at work. This has nothing to do with either high earnings or having a high level of education, as is generally associated with typical careers like lawyers, Doctors, Engineers etc, who are often called professionals. You will be surprised to find out that some of them sometimes display very little professionalism when it comes to the term itself. It will amaze you to know that many cashiers, maintenance workers, and waitresses can demonstrate a high level of this trait, even though their occupations require minimal training and earn modest earnings. In this part of the world, most people feel they don't need to demonstrate professional behaviour at work, as long as they do their job well, who cares? News Flash! Your boss, customers, and co-workers do. They will notice if you lack this quality and it could have severe consequences for your career. To go ahead and undermine the importance of professionalism would be a big mistake, which can affect your chances for advancement or even the ability to keep your job, especially as a newbie. Below are the Dos and Don'ts of professionalism: Dos and Don’ts of professionalism: 1. Make It a Priority to Be on Time When you arrive late for work or meetings, it gives your boss and co-workers the impression that you don’t care about your job. It’s like saying you don’t value their time. 2. Don’t Be a Grump Leave your bad mood at the door when you come to work. I say wear your work clothes to work and wear your house clothes at home. 3. Dress Appropriately Choose the type of clothing your employer requires. If there isn’t a dress code, pick attire that is the norm for your place of employment. NYSC / What Type Of Work Are You Looking For by hothire(f): 10:46am On Jan 05, 2021 |
WHAT TYPE OF WORK ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? In making career choices, you need to first of all ask yourself this important question: What do you want to do with your life? This is a very important question to ask yourself as only a few decisions in life are of great importance or more complex than choosing a career. And any mistake made in the choice of a career can affect you either positively or negatively in the long run. You have to learn about yourself, find out which occupations are a good match for someone with your characteristics, research each of your options and pick the best one, before you can then make a plan to reach your goals. You are simply being asked to describe your Dream Career. While there are only four steps in this process, certain amount of time and effort is required to get through them all. If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? That passage is from the holy Scriptures. When it comes to our university education, what kind of foundation are we laying for our future graduates? Are we preparing them for life after school? Is the foundation that our University Education provide really the foundation required to succeed in the Employment World? The #Curriculum used in this training is it the right one? In this part of the world, people spend up to 6years in school, then the extra 1year compulsory National Service, which I actually call the #Rehearsal for the #Real world, before coming out to meet the surprise of their life. Nobody mentioned anything about how the World of Employment works, in all their years in school. This Ebook talks about these faulty foundation used in preparing future Workers; and how these Undergraduates are not told that their counterparts who traveled abroad to study, using the appropriate Curriculum, will also come back to compete with them for the available jobs, having been well prepared for the purpose.
