From experience, the business is profitable but, if you will not be available to monitor the business yourself, then forget it.

I've not used golf 3 before but I've heard lots of good report from friends that have used it.

Fuel Economy : not much difference.
Ruggedness: Golf3 is a german car so it should be more rugged.

The fuel economy is very good. Its very rugged.
Its a good choice. Parts used to be cheap though being an old car I dont know if the parts are still readily available.
Very easy to work on.
I know because i have used it before.
