lalasticlala have you heard of Portmanteaus before? fynestboi |
For the uninitiated, portmanteaus (or ‘portmanteaux’) are words which combine the sounds and meanings of two words. For example, motel (a combination of motor and hotel) or brunch (a combination of breakfastand lunch). Whilst browsing a list of different portmanteaus and blends, I noticed a number of words that I use fairly regularly, and I had no idea they were formed from two different words. As a result, I thought it would be nice to summarize some of these in a list. 1. endorphin This word’s roots have so far been traced back to the 1970s, as a blend of the words endogenous and morphine. It means ‘any group of hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system and having a number of physiological functions’. 2. moped Oxford Dictionaries has found evidence that this word comes from Swedish, with its earliest example cited in the 1950s. It is a roughly translated and abbreviated version of the phrase ‘trampcykel med motor och pedaler’ which means ‘pedal cycle with motor and pedals’. The word ‘moped’ is assumed to have taken both its parts from motor and pedal. 3. napalm Made famous for its use as a warfare weapon, this word takes its name from two of the ingredients required to make it. Naphthenic acid from crude oil and palmitic acid from coconut oil. 4. modem Comprising the words modulator and demodulator, two devices named after the actions they carry out. A modem does both of these things in order to send and receive data. 5. dumbfound A great word to describe the shocking moments that amaze or astonish, this word is, rather unsurprisingly, made up of the words dumb and confound. 6. chortle The earliest noted example of this word is in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass. It is assumed that it was made from a blend of chuckleand snort. It was a popular word used in the Beano magazines when a character would try to hide their laughter. When I saw his deteriorating photos online, I thought, if I could, what could I even help with? Then I got a conviction. Then I chatted him up. I told him I had NOTHING but I could only offer to DONATE BLOOD. I wasn’t even convinced if that was enough but he got too excited to know me. I told him not to bother cos I am just an insignificant figure to be remembered among the number of people he meets on a daily. (I don’t get angry if you meet me once and don’t remember me, I don’t remember people that easily too). Well, I had done a waka pass in one of his movies which I don’t remember and don’t wish to. So that’s how I got his number about 6 yrs ago. I told him I’ll only have time in the weekend. Fortunately for him, upon my mentioning it, his BLOOD TRANSFUSION was scheduled for same week I intended to visit. When I got there, it was just a few minutes before visiting time, so I waited doing my selfies which I shared on IG (the one in afro and red Ankara on @mslibbyoffemoke). Lol. Then it was time, As I walking in…I did my mental work of why he was brought to such a place for someone who’s that ill... When I got into his ward where he shared with about eight or more other beds, I met a stench unkempt room with mosquito nets hanging on every bed. There was another Nollywood actor who shared the opposite bed, I don’t know his name. Obi was better than his previous photos shared online. He looked like a good fighter. Even though the fear I had earlier gripped me even stronger but this time for him. Was just a BLOOD DONATION even ENOUGH for this man I see, I was worried. Fortunately, his composure showed he’s putting up a good fight so it kind of made me a little comfortable. He insisted on knowing why I chose such a kind gesture for a man like him whom I barely know. I told him I know him, it’s him who doesn’t know me. ALSO READ: I HATE MYSELF, I DON'T KNOW IF GOD WILL EVER FORGIVE ME "I usually mind my business most times of my life, nosing isn’t part of me but not when I go all out this time. I must find out how he got to this state…so I unleashed my journalistic instincts. I asked him how come about this deteriorating state? He told me it was a careless life style he lived. That a mentor friend’s wife had asked the husband to cut off their friendship otherwise he would leave him. The friend then conveyed his wife's message to him because he was emaciating and it was becoming very worrisome for those around who assumed it was HIV. Obi said he took the challenge and did the needful. That was when how he was diagnosed of diabetes. From a tiny little boil, boom…Then I asked him what was his take home lesson in all he’s been through? “He said he’s learnt not to take his health for granted and to live a decent life.” I felt shivers all over me. This use to be a bubbling man, I though. Anyways, it was time for the main purpose of my visit. I hate piercings. I allowed them stick the needle through my vein for screening. Had a little altercation with the nurse on duty. She almost refused to screen my blood that day. Whoops, I saw another part of the sweet gentle man I went to visit. He had energy to exhume because he was desperate of having a pint of blood. It took a lot of persuasions for the nurse to work on the blood. After a while, the result was out. Unfortunately for us both, after all the wahala, I had Insufficient Blood to donate. My heart dropped and I didn’t know how to relay such devastating news to an expectant (desperate) man. I was disappointed at myself, my very fears came dashing at me. I blamed myself. Why did I even try in the first place? Why did I even visit if I had all the fears that something was not right…all the whys couldn't be answered. But I figured it was because of the lose of blood from my menstrual cycle that ended two days before. What a shame...he needed the blood for his TRANSFUSION the next day. Then I went back upstairs to give him the sad new. I could see his heard dropped but he put up a cheered face. Letting me know he was grateful for even trying. That there are rare people like me. (I thought that’s not true, did I not just see a married man doing same for his wife…why should mine fail..?) He embraced Jesus. I was there when their visiting pastor ministered to those around including myself.. I could feel it in him as he mentioned Jesus and his wife being a strong pillar to his strength. I never got to meet her until I left but I met Jesus with him. We said our goodbyes that Sunday, February 23, 2017. I chatted him with a few times to check up on him again, he told him he had been discharged. That was the last I heard of him as neither his calls nor chats were connecting. I only could pray and hoped he was fine. Until last night I heard of his demise. I could only scream. I hope he's resting now ![]() We are nothing but pencil in the hand of the creator. We can only do our best while we are alive… RIP Obi Madubogwu!!! Miss Libby Will Miss You http://m.af1234.com/Af1234/details?id=4397

The Federal High Court in Lagos has postponed judgement on the N300m fundamental rights enforcement suit filed against the Nigerian Police Force by suspected kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans. Justice Abdulaziz Anka decided to adjourn judgement on the case after claims by the police that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the Nigerian Police Force had not been party to the court proceedings. Due to this, both defendants, who had been entered as third and fourth respondents in the suit, could not provide defence for themselves in the court. Justice Anka adjourned the case till September 5, 2017 to give the defendants a proper chance to hear from them. http://m.af1234.com/Af1234/postdetails?id=42186

A housewife who admitted that she doesn’t love and cherish her husband anymore, has approached a Sharia Court in Minna, the Niger State capital, seeking dissolution of her marriage. A housewife, Sadiya Musa, on Monday, approached a Sharia Court in Minna for the dissolution of her marriage to her husband, having fallen out of love with him.Sadiya told the court that she had fallen out of love with her heartthrob, Abdullahi Ibrahim, and would want the marriage dissolved. “I don’t love and cherish my husband anymore. That is why I want dissolution and I don’t have anything else to add,” she said. However, Abdullahi pleaded with the court not to divorce the marriage, saying that he was still in love with her and he would try to change and bring her back home. The judge, Ahmed Bima, said he would give the couple some time to resolve their differences and get back together again. Bima adjourned the case to Sept. 11 for further mention. Mr Eazi said: “When I first met him, he just asked me what I wanted and I’m like ‘ give me an offer‘ and he said ‘I’m not going to give you an offer‘. “He said ‘tell me exactly what you want ‘ and I said ‘I don’t want any money from you‘ and he replied saying, ‘What do you want ‘. And I’m like ‘ I want us to work together as a family ‘. “And that is what it is [till today]. I’m operating how I like and putting out music whenever I like. It’s a sweet thing.” copied from Palmchat original source http://www.myowngist.info/2017/07/mr-eazi-speaks-on-wizkids-refusal-to.html?m=1
