forgiveness: And you need a fatigue player due to jet lag when the chips are down?
Iwobi was not impossing enough on the game. The only other player on the bench from the match day list that can play that position was Etebo plus Etebo has the ability to find the back of the net even from the unlikeliest of chances.
Besides, the jet lag issue is just a probability. It may or may nt have affected him. So why not throw Etebo in when u depirately needed that goal.
goldfish80: At Standard Liege he was a defender. I believe you watched a lot of Standard liege games to have seen him. For the Flying Eagles, which I witnessed some of their games live at the stadium. At no point did Yobo play in defence. Just like a Warri wolves fan would have been surprised seeing Etebor play as a DM against Algeria. Players play different roles for club and country in some cases.
Yobo did nt play with the senior standard liege team until 2000.
SharpJoe: Akpeyi looked shaky to me when I watched him play. Reports said he was jittery against Senegal. If Emma Daniel was a better choice in the Olympics, there is no way Akpeyi can be the better reserve Goalkeeper.
I am definitely not confident with him in goal. Looked amateurish in the goal conceded and showed same sign in his other game for the Super Eagles. He can pass though.
After being in goal in 3 very difficult games?
Has he been humiliated by any team?
Rohr knows what is best for us. Lets allow him pls.
TheSuperNerd: That is true.... but that is subtly why I no call name naa.... alampasu is not doing well for now.... and I still have high hopes for him.... Nwokolor gets rave review In his league.... but still a greenhorn...
For now... na Ikeme we know....
For the future... the next no.1 will eventually reveal himself... we have never ever been in lack of Great goalies for any generation.... so I have no worries for the future....
My Only worry now is Ikeme's fitness. I hope when cameroun comes calling we won't hear Ikeme is down again...
That is it.
Lets not worry abt a future goalie. Let us focus and solve the problem at hand. A goalie will eventually emerge when the time comes.
I give Rohr kudos for keeping faith with Akpeyi who in my opinion has not been exceptional but has done well as a reserve goalie.
For all those calling for Alampasu, Nwokolo and Daniel can Rohr put any of them in goal against Cameroun? No!
Akpeyi haven kept goal against Egypt in Alexandria, Algeria in Uyo and Senegal in London has proven he is no shove over.
Let us use all we have at our disposal to qualify for the WC and AFCON first then start thinking abt building for the future.
The NFF even told Rohr that there'll be no contract renewal if he fails to qualify for 2018 WC and u expect him to be planning for 2022 WC?
Y'all probably know already that the Burkina Faso match is off. Arrangements are being made to find a clubside.
Let me be sincere. I'll glad if that Burkina game is off. Our boys are still recovering from the fight they had with the Lions we want to throw them in again to fight with the Stalions.
NFF should look for one league one or two club play abeg.
Atleast with that Rohr can start and assess Ebuehi and Obazee And also do some shuffling upfront or try a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation. I would also want to a 4-4-2 with Success and Iheanacho as the hitmen.
No Burkina friendly abeg. With dey did against Senegal they are good enough to beat Cameroun in Uyo, which is all we need to eliminate Cameroun.
TheSuperNerd: I think it is because Rohr feels he has no much time anymore.... he just wanna focus and solidify his team for qualification first before bringing in our future no.1s .....
That is if any of those young goalies will eventually be our no1s.
Two years back did anybody know Ikeme will be our no1 and Akpeyi no2?
Any other goalie can spring up from any where in future and become first choice.
SharpJoe: That is why I felt this Friendly window was a good try out for our young goal keepers. However, Rohr had a different plan of using it to prepare his team for a physical clash against Cameroon.
Rohr's plan for this game is far more important than what u felt he should have done for the friendlies.
goldfish80: Costa Rica scored a few seconds after this action. Its very clear this is a flat back four, I wonder where the "extra defender" Yobo was.
cc TheGoodJoe, SharpJoe
Hahaha.
I see.
The thing is you think about tactics too straight
. Dnt u feel: 1. The coach would have instructed one of the CB to join in the DMF duties. 2. U may have cropped off one of the defenders who could have been in a more advanced position.
But i think d first is a more likely case bc playing an extra DMF puts pressure off the defenders which is mode effective than playing an extra defender.
TheSuperNerd: But you really think Enyeama will make a u-turn.... it won't be bad having him back shaa ooo.... coz I am tired of all this goalkeeping crisis.
I know we have young Nwokolor and Emma Daniel.... but Rohr haven't given them their debuts yet and he wouldn't do so in a competitive fixture as crucial as the cameroun double header....
We also have Alampasu but he needs to step in his clubside....
I just hope Ikeme is fit when D-day comes calling....
You have just painted the true unbiased picture.
There is no way Rohr will Bank on Nwokolo, Alampasu or Daniel for any of the qualifiers games this year.
Any one of them may at best come in as a 3rd choice who we know will nt even make match day squad.
All those saying Akpeyi and Ezenwa should be dropped should suggest here names of goalies that they feel are ready to face SA in June and Cameroun in August per adventure Ikeme is injured again. Drop them, drop them. But name replacement na. Nothing.
Enyeama should be allow to continue collecting his pension.
goldfish80: Your 11-12 minutes does not include stoppage time. How many matches have you watched and the ref called off the game on the dot of 90'?
Yobo maybe listed as a defender at Standard liege but it's very clear the Nigerian coaches still saw him as an attacker which he was known for before signing for Standard liege and he was rightly registered by FIFA as an attacker. Just like Mikel being made to play attacking midfield for the super eagles while he played deeper for Chelsea.
Disu brought Yobo in to shore up the midfield, not to play as a defender. Does it make tactical sense to play 5 man defensive formation to protect a 1 goal lead against Costa Rica of all teams.
So Yobo came in to shore up the midfield?
I thought you initially said was there as a striker?

Disu's team was leading 1-0.
They needed a second goal. They laboured so hard and dominated their opponent. Yet the second goal did not come.
At 79th min he pulls off the lone goal scorer, Julius Aghahowa, who is a striker, and brings in a Standard liege defender.
Even a novice in the game can easily explain the tactical switch.
SharpJoe: Probably after the Costa Ricans equalized, Tunde Disu instructed Yobo to join the attack, that was why you saw him attacking. At that time, we went all out in search for a winner. Also this aligns with Icon4s point that Yobo as a defender could progress down the field to join the attack. Also why he could play the right back role.
That substitution was made about the 70th min. We were still leading 1-0. It could have been a tactical switch to beef up the midfield and defense and not a like for like substitution.
modified: confirmed, Yobo came in for Aghahowa in the 79th min and Costa Rica scored in the 83rd min. So the coach, haven failed to secure a second goal, decided to pull out a striker and brought in a defender to secure the slim lead. O pari.
This site gave an account of the Nigeria vs Costa Rica game. They listed Yobo as a Df/ midfielder. In this particular game, he replaced Eddie Dombraye and played an advanced midfield role. Komekn was actually correct about Yobo playing as an attacking midfielder in 99.
Ow I see.
Firstly even from the site u are quoting from Yobo came in for Aghahowa and nt for Dombraye.
Secondly are u saying bc Yobo came in for Aghohowa that Yobo went straight to play a striker's role?
I am sure u are knowledgeable enough about football to know that not all substitutions are like for like. That substitution could have just been a tactical switch jst to beef up the midfield and defense bc we led for the greater part of that game only to concede a late equalizer.
SharpJoe: Big thanks to Haruna Babangida for uploading this nice clip of his goals and assists. It shows how brilliant he was and it is still shocking one of our youngsters exported at such a young age did not make an impact in the Super Eagles.
SharpJoe: He did not. Icon4s explained to you that Yobo was converted to a defender when he left for Belgium. We would not drop Aniele to experiment with a defender as a striker. It is too illogical.
At Nigeria '99 Yobo was a defender. I cant recall exactly Whether RB or CB.
The thing is Yobo moved forward a lot especially when there was a set piece to be taken. Yobo i think is about one of our defenders that scored the most goals.
I think there were times in that tourney when Yobo, bc of his striker abilities, would drift forward to support the strikers. As i said earlier especially during set piece taking.
So goldfish80 may have thought on such occasions that Yobo was a striker.
SharpJoe: I knew complete football then and we always looked forward to their last edition before World Cups and World Youth Championships where they profiled players. Much respect. That is remarkable.
Yo men. U probably read a couple of my columns.
You jst took me back memory lane. I was a free lancer then. Would submit our monthly write up(s). The Editor only selected the ones he deemed fit. If ur story makes it. U get paid. Else try next time.
We jst dey use am then dey support ourselves for school small-small.
SharpJoe: Impressive. You were a sports writer at that time. No wonder you writing flows with ease.
With respect to Haruna Babangida, in the game against Costa Rica, he played an attacking role. He was a winger who could play as a forward role. Well, I was a bit young and did not know too much on the attacking roles of our players. However, that was a nice attacking team.
That Costa Rica game hurt, with Gen. Abdulsalami in the stadium. We were all over the Costa Ricans looking for a second goal when they scored us towards the end of the game.
Sports writing/reporting was my first career.
I was still an undergraduate then though.
Then we wrote more for the fun and fame. U know, ur friends reading ur column and hailing and respecting u. I wrote for Complete football. A one time monthly football magazine in the 90s
Humility017: I really think...Success should be deployed as a CF and Kelechi as SS or AM.... this combo I believe will throw in goals.. still remember their partnership during UAE Under 17 world cup 2013...
Young players metamorphose.
These players have a career path. There is a career progression. Coaches typically tie-into the career path or progression of these players. It helps the player progress better.
Ndidi started off as defender and is today a DM. Iheanacho started as an AM/WF and today a striker, Ahmed Musa started as a striker and today a winger/ss. Observe that coaches have followed along the new career paths of these players.
It helps the players adopt more quickly as d national team most often have barely 2-3days to bond and blend.
Success is now a WF so why should Rohr play him a CF. Iheanacho is the best striker we currently have.
