Car TalkCount The Cost Of Before Becoming A Good Samaritan! by IdaraCHODB(op):
Despite all the bad news, the kidnappings, the killings of lenders who came to demand repayments and what have you, humans are basically kind at heart ( the majority at least) which is why, when there is an accident, we often stop to see how we can help. Most of the time, I don't stop, but I stopped recently and helped direct recovery efforts in an accident I witnessed occur less than 3 weeks ago.

While it is the right thing to help, it is important to realize that they may be financial and legal consequences to stopping to help, the following article should help you weight the implications before you decide to stop to help a car/driver that is stuck.

Source: http://www.alloyandgrit.com/2014/12/02/when-the-road-to-recovery-becomes-the-highway-to-hell/

Without a doubt, one of the most rewarding aspects of owning a Land Rover is taking advantage of its strength and abilities to help others when conditions get tough. Personally, I’ve used my Discovery to get neighbors home during floods and blizzards when roads were all but impassable, and I’ve helped complete strangers out of ditches in whiteout conditions.

Now that “polar vortex” is once again on the tongues of meterologists across the greater northern parts of our country again, I’ve tossed my emergency recovery kit back in the truck in anticipation of another ugly winter.

A recent conversation, however, had me second-guessing whether I should even bother. A colleague brought up the question of who’s liable in the event something goes wrong when you voluntarily assist a stranded motorist. It’s not the kind of thing most of us think about when we pull up alongside a young mother with a toddler in a car seat, stranded hopelessly in a snow-packed ditch.

I certainly didn’t when I came upon this exact situation two years ago. Fortunately, the Nissan Altima with bald tires was easy to pull out and put back on the road (though, arguably, it didn’t belong there given the conditions) without undue incident.

But what if it hadn’t gone so easily? What if my recovery strap broke and recoiled against her windshield, injuring her? What if I latched onto the wrong part of her car and damaged it? What if pulling her car forced a catastrophic failure on my truck?

None of those things ever crossed my mind whenever I’ve stopped to help in the past, but this recent conversation really bothered me. You might think being a Good Samaritan would get you off the hook, but you’d be wrong. To get a better understanding of the risks of being Mr. Nice Guy, we consulted an insurance expert with a handful of possible scenarios to see how each situation might turn out should good intensions go awry.

In each of these scenarios, we assume you have stopped to pull a stranded car from a snowy ditch. Your vehicle is in proper operating condition, as is your recovery gear.

Scenario 1: You damage the other vehicle by incorrectly attaching the tow strap to it. Are you liable for the damage done to the car?

Answer: Yes, you may be liable for damage done to the other car by pulling on it.

Advice: Know what you’re attaching your recovery gear to. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual if you’re unsure. It may take an extra couple of minutes, but it’s better than accidentally bending a suspension arm or pulling off some superficial trim by mistake. In a worst case scenario, you could always record a short cell-phone video of the other vehicle’s owner granting you permission to recover their vehicle and accepting liability for any damages that may occur.

Scenario 2: The tow strap breaks and recoils into the other vehicle, damaging it and possibly injuring its driver or passengers. Are you liable for any damage and/or injuries?

Answer: Yes, you may be liable for vehicle damage and medical injuries.

Advice: First, remove anyone from the car that doesn’t need to be in it, even the driver depending on conditions. Next, only use gear that is in good working condition. Replace any gear that is showing signs of wear or fatigue. Also, know the working limits of your gear. A stuck car will have considerably more resistance than a free one, especially if you’re pulling upwards, as from a ditch. Secure your equipment well and double check before pulling. In the process of pulling, always be smooth, avoiding jerking or running starts that can temporarily overload the recovery gear.

Scenario 3: In the course of extracting the other vehicle, it is damaged by rocks, trees or other snow-covered debris in the ditch. Are you liable for the damage done to the car?

Answer: No, any damage incurred will be considered part of the original accident.

Advice: To cover yourself, you may want to take cell-phone pictures or video before starting to remove the vehicle, noting the conditions and any prior damage. While you’re at it, you may want to go ahead and get a video authorization from the owner to recover the car, with their acknowledgement that further damage may occur.

Scenario 5: After pulling the other car free, the other driver runs into your truck, unable to stop. Is the other driver liable for damages, or could you be considered liable if it’s determined you pulled too fast or hard?

Answer: Yes, the other vehicle’s owner would be liable for the damage, but depending on the amount and type of damage, it’s possible that the accident may be further investigated and both parties assigned partial responsibility.

Advice: First, give yourself enough distance with appropriate-length recovery straps. At least a car-length should separate the two vehicles for minor recoveries; two car-lengths or more should be considered for situations where momentum may be a factor.

Also, plan your recovery for conditions and possible reactions. You wouldn’t want to pull a vehicle onto an icy downhill surface, for instance. If the driver of the other vehicle is to remain in his car for control purposes, make sure you are able to clearly communicate to him and that he clearly understands any instructions you give him. Worst case, have another person record the recovery on your phone.

Scenario 6: Despite your efforts during the course of recovery, the other vehicle becomes even more entrenched than when you started. Can the other driver demand you pay for professional recovery, either in part or in full?

Answer: No. They got themselves stuck in the first place, and you attempted to help them (presumably) for no charge. You made no guarantee of recovery, and if you fail, they are still in exactly the same situation they were when you arrived.

Advice: Make it clear from the beginning that you will try your best to help them, but if you are unsuccessful they will have to call a professional.

The takeaway in each of these situations is that you and the other parties involved should understand that you are not a professional, just a fellow motorist offering a helping hand. Things may go wrong. In this modern technological age we live in, your best defense in any of these situations may be to document the recovery from start to finish with your cell phone camera, and obtain a video authorization from the other party before agreeing to help.

Will this fly?

I doubt, the last time I brought in OEM Spark plug wires via passenger as opposed to freight flight, they discarded the diaelectric grease, so anything in the form of liquid or gel cannot fly with me. It is liable to be suspected to be something dangerous. Should I bring it in via freight?

Dear friend

This is serious assignment oooo

in Dash DVD players are not the same as in Dash Navigation systems. It is possible to have an inDash DVD player without navigation ( such as those I listed above), or an inDash DVD+Navigation system.

All the above constitute the former. I gather you need the later. To be honest with you, am no expert in the later. From my research a Navigation System that works perfectly in the US might be worthless in Nigeria, I cannot recommend to you unless I am convinced it won't disappoint you, this explains the delay in responding to the issue of in Dash Navigation System.

I have discovered that there are lots of Nigerian companies that either manufacture or sell such, will email you details so you can make your choice. I tend to prefer this route rather than cause you to commit funds only to discover that it doesn't work for you. You will not be happy and you will make others unhappy to do business with me. I would rather not make a sale to you than let than happen

Must it be Toyota OEM.

There are heavy duty High Performance Brake pads from elsewhere like Akebono ( my personal favorite) as well as others like Centric, Raybestos, Power Stop, Bendix and Bosch. But if you insist on Toyota OEM, you will have it.

Well, I haven't done a cross-check so I cant confirm or disprove that they bought share the same pads, i do know that Camry and Sienna have a lot in common though!

As regard the DVD Dash board player, you have to decide which model and brand you want before we can start talking pricing

I have updated this thread with relevant information related to the issue addressed in this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/1437717/use-speed-limiters-way-out
Car TalkRe: Use Of Speed Limiters; The Way Out? by IdaraCHODB(m):
The rules in Kenya and Zambia and South Africa do not apply to private vehicles.

In Kenya, the rules apply only to matatus and other vehicles that serve the public. The title of the Kenyan Law is instructive: The Traffic Act—Speed Governor for Public Service and Commercial Vehicles .See a link to the law here: http://kenyalaw.org/kl/index.php?id=4046 . But see also http://www.nation.co.ke/lifestyle/money/Dalcom-Enterprises-Omata-Speed-Governors/-/435440/2268092/-/o81kplz/-/index.html

In Zambia, it applies to all long distance public service vehicles, here is a link to the relevant law: http://www.zambialii.org/zm/legislation/statutory-instrument/2006/19

In South Africa, here is a link that discusses the issue: http://www.wheels24.co.za/News/New-SA-road-rules-Speed-limiters-for-taxis-20141111. Here is a link to the law: http://cdn.24.co.za/files/Cms/General/d/2914/f6dd81eb1bd44979b0974a0eb6e96a52.pdf. As you can see, the law is very new. Which means either of 2 things, that a fresh law on the subject matter has just been enacted or a previous one repealed. I have not had the time to confirm which is the case.

In Uganda, here are links that address the issue of what obtains there:http://www.newvision.co.ug/news/641971-city-drivers-get-new-speed-limits.html, http://www.ulii.org/ug/legislation/statutory-instrument/47-0 and http://www.ulii.org/ug/legislation/statutory-instrument/59-1

In Tanzania, here is what obtains: http://www.thisday.co.tz/?l=10449. Infact, I pity them 50Km/hour? And the law: http://www.judiciary.go.tz/judiciary/admin/files/legislations/The_Road_Traffic.pdf. And a discussion of what is going on there: http://nao.go.tz/?wpfb_dl=77 and http://www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/road_safety_status/2013/country_profiles/united_republic_of_tanzania.pdf

So far in Africa, Uganda has, Kenya has, South Africa has, Zambia has, Has Nigeria done so ( as far as the law books are concerned)?

I am yet to conduct research but I doubt that even the country in which the WHO has its headquarters has implemented speed limiters on private and public vehicles.

I did however find research that suggests that at least 33 countries have implemented speed limit devices on heavy duty trucks. Here is the link if you are interested in the details: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/tp-tp14810-menu-369.htm

Even more interesting would be a research on how many of the 194 member countries of the WHO are implementing this policy of speed limiting devices as opposed to speed limits in general, and then to speed limit devices on public vehicles (that can be further broken down into the types of public vehicles e.g., buses and trucks and tankers) and to private vehicles.

I ran a search with the term "speed limit devices" on the WHO website and while I saw speed limits, I did not see speed limit devices. Of course I did not do a very thorough search, as I was rather busy. But I will find the time to do so

Thankfully, given the limited resources at the disposal of the FRSC, they are starting with speed limiters for heavy duty trucks and things like that see this link http://www.channelstv.com/2014/11/19/frsc-to-introduce-speed-governor-june-1-2015/

I have no statistics to back it up but I strongly suspect that heavy duty trucks, luxurious buses and other smaller buses cause more carnage on the road than private vehicles. Make them leave us alone Ooooo!

I stand to be corrected. I state the facts as I think them to be but will surrender to superior facts if they can be provided and I find them to be so!

Let me close with this food for thought which contains research conducted by Professor Christo Bester and US student MS Marais which was presented at a recent Southern African Transport Conference, held in Pretoria. : http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article/different-speed-limits-for-buses-trucks-and-cars-not-enforced-research-study-2012-07-19

Car TalkWhy The Size Mismatch Between Upper And Lower Radiator Hoses by IdaraCHODB(op): 1:55pm On Nov 17, 2014
On traditional “bottom-up” automotive engine coolant systems, the lower hose runs to the water pump’s suction side. As on any fluid system, suction results in negative pressure, aka vacuum. The higher the suction force, the higher the vacuum and the lower a liquid’s boiling point. If the fluid begins boiling (changing state from a liquid to a vapor), air bubbles form, which can lead to water-pump cavitation and loss of cooling efficiency. Essentially, the water pump goes into “vapor lock” and no longer circulates coolant through the engine. The air bubbles in the pump can even recompress, causing a small explosion that can damage the pump’s impeller vanes.

The smaller an orifice’s cross-sectional area for a given flow volume, the higher the vacuum—so the lower hose is typically made larger than the top hose to minimize suction/vacuum at the pump inlet, as well as to allow sufficient fluid volume to reach the pump so it can produce proper pressure on its outlet side.

Don’t second-guess factory hose sizes!

It's absolutely true that you get more power from headers, well designed headers from a good manufacturer like Magnaflow who conducts research and development.

IMHO, if you install a full exhaust system from them plus an aftermarket freeflow catalytic converter (there's no need to remove cats anymore) then you can get 25 - 50 more horsepower if you can do an intake upgrade and chip reprogramming at the same time.
Thanks. I'll add those to my projects for 2015 in this order - pipes, headers , intake upgrade, chip reprogramming.

I am already running a Magnaflow freeflow catalytic converter and performance muffler

Good to know. I too take my cars seriously, but I haven't invested as much in tools.

From your experience is it true that the aftermarket headers such as Magnaflow are indeed less restrictive than OEM? Resulting in more power output as some claim?

Magnaflow is the default exhaust system for domestic (they do imports too) and Megans Racing is the one for imports - http://www.meganracing.com . These are my opinions though.

If you have a smartphone then I recommend some power/speed/torque measuring apps.

I removed the exhaust system in my MR2 and installed a full aftermarket system. It like the car up.
You went all the way - including headers, i think I should try that too.

Please go-ahead and recommend, but i have a gut feeling that the power has indeed increased, I just don't have numbers to back it up

Magnaflow Exhaust System

http://www.magnaflow.com
Absolutely right - you can change both the catalyst and the muffler ( but I think the roar you are talking about comes from the aftermarket muffler not the catalyst).

I don't know if they are right on both counts, but they say that their muffler increases both the power and the sound. I haven't measured the power on my ride, but my ride stopped being quiet ever since I installed their muffler ( I mean when I stomp on the gas you know something is going on)

You do not absolutely need to delete your catalyst to create the roar - I have a brand new catalyst installed but I also have a performance muffler from Magnaflow and the sound at idle is a little bit louder than stock, and during heavy acceleration is like the roar you are thinking of
