Car Talk / Re: DIY: PCV System Check And PCV Valve Replacement 03 Accord I4 by IdaraCHODB(m): 8:19pm On Apr 25, 2015
Piyke:
Now this is why I said I regretted buying a Beck Arnley aftermarket PCV valve. It just simply broke on re-installation angry angry angry
I had to jeejeely give the old PCV valve a thorough bath with carb cleaner to blow off any dirt and then installed it back with no troubles

I used to think Beck Arnley were good. From today no more of their products!

I had a nasty experience with the same manufacturer.

I replaced my fuel pump with a brand new Denso.

Then decided to replace the fuel pump housing with a Beck Arnley.

So everything would be new and work like a charm or so I thought!

Now you may be aware that the fuel pump housing has come electrical connections in some vehicles for reading the fuel gauge etc.

While driving, at speeds much in excess of 90 km/hr, the car acted like the ignition wires were not receiving current, and like there was a fuel cut-off or speed limiter or like the fuel pump was dying or the fuel lines were clogged, suddenly everyone I had overtaken and dusted started overtaking me, for the fuel to flow I had to reduce my speed to less than 80km/hr.

So what could have been wrong? Brand new fuel pump and brand new fuel filter and brand new fuel pump housing?

So I sought professional help and I was given varying answers such as a dying fuel pump; a clogged fuel tank requiring dismantling and washing; clogged fuel filter or replacement of my ignition wires.

I was not too certain they were right, so I decided to take a look myself.

I personally inspected the fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pump housing, and discovered that the unit ( fuel pump housing) had started melting and the wires were of extremely substandard quality and had started burning and shorting, so I removed it and replaced with the OEM unit I had earlier removed and the vehicle came back from coma.

The scenario above has not repeated itself, no matter was speed I drive since then, if I ask for fuel, the fuel pump has never failed me

Aftermarket quality is sometimes a gamble. OEM quality is nearly always a given.
Car Talk / Why Car Makers Should not succeed at Outlawing DIY! (Car Hacked)!! by IdaraCHODB(m): 10:45pm On Apr 22, 2015
Extract:
Automakers are supporting provisions in copyright law that could prohibit home mechanics and car enthusiasts from repairing and modifying their own vehicles.

In comments filed with a federal agency that will determine whether tinkering with a car constitutes a copyright violation, OEMs and their main lobbying organization say cars have become too complex and dangerous for consumers and third parties to handle.

Allowing them to continue to fix their cars has become "legally problematic," according to a written statement from the Auto Alliance, the main lobbying arm of automakers.

The dispute arises from a section of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that no one thought could apply to vehicles when it was signed into law in 1998. But now, in an era where cars are rolling computing platforms, the U.S. Copyright Office is examining whether provisions of the law that protect intellectual property should prohibit people from modifying and tuning their cars.

Every three years, the office holds hearings on whether certain activities should be exempt from the DMCA's section 1201, which governs technological measures that protect copyrighted work. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates for individual rights in the digital world, has asked the office to ensure that enthusiasts can continue working on cars by providing exemptions that would give them the right to access necessary car components.

Interested parties have until the end of the month to file comments on the proposed rule making, and a final decision is expected by mid-year.

In comments submitted so far, automakers have expressed concern that allowing outsiders to access electronic control units that run critical vehicle functions like steering, throttle inputs and braking "leads to an imbalance by which the negative consequences far outweigh any suggested benefits," according to the Alliance of Global Automakers. In the worst cases, the organizations said an exemption for enthusiasts "leads to disastrous consequences."

Complex Software, Increased Risk

Industry concerns are mounting that modifying these ECUs and the software coding that runs them could lead to vulnerabilities in vehicle safety and cyber security. Imagine an amateur makes a coding mistake that causes brakes to fail and a car crash ensues. Furthermore, automakers say these modifications could render cars non-compliant with environmental laws that regulate emissions.

But exemptions from the DMCA don't give third parties the right to infringe upon existing copyrights. Nor does an exemption mean consumers don't have to abide by other laws and rules that govern vehicles passed by the National Highway Traffic Administration, Environmental Protection Agency or U.S. Patent and Trade Office.

"It's not a new thing to be able to repair and modify cars," said Kit Walsh, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "It's actually a new thing to keep people from doing it. There are these specialized agencies that govern what vehicles can lawfully be used for on the road, and they have not seen fit to stop them from repairing cars."

Aftermarket suppliers and home enthusiasts have been modifying ECUs for years without dire consequences. By tweaking the ECU codes, a process sometimes known as "chipping," they've boosted horsepower, improved fuel efficiency, established performance limits for teen drivers and enhanced countless other features. These innovations have contributed to a "decades-old tradition of mechanical curiosity and self-reliance," according to the EFF.

Hackers Remotely Kill a Jeep on the Highway—With Me in It

I was driving 70 mph on the edge of downtown St. Louis when the exploit began to take hold.

Though I hadn’t touched the dashboard, the vents in the Jeep Cherokee started blasting cold air at the maximum setting, chilling the sweat on my back through the in-seat climate control system. Next the radio switched to the local hip hop station and began blaring Skee-lo at full volume. I spun the control knob left and hit the power button, to no avail. Then the windshield wipers turned on, and wiper fluid blurred the glass.

As I tried to cope with all this, a picture of the two hackers performing these stunts appeared on the car’s digital display: Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, wearing their trademark track suits. A nice touch, I thought.

The Jeep’s strange behavior wasn’t entirely unexpected. I’d come to St. Louis to be Miller and Valasek’s digital crash-test dummy, a willing subject on whom they could test the car-hacking research they’d been doing over the past year. The result of their work was a hacking technique—what the security industry calls a zero-day exploit—that can target Jeep Cherokees and give the attacker wireless control, via the Internet, to any of thousands of vehicles. Their code is an automaker’s nightmare: software that lets hackers send commands through the Jeep’s entertainment system to its dashboard functions, steering, brakes, and transmission, all from a laptop that may be across the country.

To better simulate the experience of driving a vehicle while it’s being hijacked by an invisible, virtual force, Miller and Valasek refused to tell me ahead of time what kinds of attacks they planned to launch from Miller’s laptop in his house 10 miles west. Instead, they merely assured me that they wouldn’t do anything life-threatening. Then they told me to drive the Jeep onto the highway. “Remember, Andy,” Miller had said through my iPhone’s speaker just before I pulled onto the Interstate 64 on-ramp, “no matter what happens, don’t panic.”

Don't buy a car based on cost, or popularity, buy a car based on safety reviews or safety features, obviously that cannot apply to new models, maybe that is a good case for buying top-of-th-end luxury cars even if it is an older model since they tend to cram safety features into such vehicles that dwarf what you can ever find in a late model econobox.

My sibling saw a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am for $500 and considered it a steal, and asked me my opinion, first thing I did was check Wikipedia and NHTSA Crash Test Ratings, here were the results:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 1999-2005 Grand Am a "Poor" rating in its frontal crash test for marginal structural integrity, a possible head injury, a potential right leg injury, and poor dummy control.

2003 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Crash Test Ratings (coupe):[26]

Frontal Driver: 4/5 stars

WHAT OBTAINS IN THE UK!

Cars should be fitted with speed-limiters to help prevent accidents and cut carbon emissions, claim government advisers.

Ministers are planning to help councils draw up digital maps with details of the legal speed on every road.

The device then uses satellite positioning to check if a vehicle is breaking the speed limit and will automatically slow a car down and apply the brakes if necessary.

The speed-limiting technology could prevent up to 29 per cent of road accidents which cause injuries.

But campaigners believe the devices are dangerous because they lull drivers into a 'zombie mode'.

The Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT) and the Motorists' Forum published a report yesterday which called for the voluntary introduction of the devices - called intelligent speed adaption (ISA).

The study also looked at how the devices would help fuel consumption, emissions, noise and ease traffic on the roads.

It found that on 70mph roads, keeping to the speed limit could lead to savings of up to 6 per cent in CO2 emissions.

But Claire Armstrong, from the road safety charity Safe Speed, said that the devices could be dangerous.

She said truck drivers using speed-limiting devices had been shown to 'go into fatigue mode or zombie mode' and stopped paying attention to the road.

Mrs Armstrong added: 'That makes it highly dangerous in those scenarios. So you've taken the responsibility away from the driver and that is not good for road safety.'

Derek Charters, from the Motor Industry Research Association, said using devices to automatically limit speed could cause accidents.

He said: 'The last thing you need is one car to be overtaking and then pull back in, in front of the cars in front, because that braking event will then cause everybody to start to slow down, which will then compress the traffic, which then causes an incident.'

Although neither CfIT nor the Motorists' Forum is recommending the compulsory fitting or usage of ISA they both want the Department for Transport to make the technology available and encourage drivers to use it.

John Lewis, from the Motorists' Forum, said he believed the devices would help drivers obey limits and therefore hold onto their licences.

He told the BBC: 'We believe that the system should be a voluntary system, that the drivers decide if they have fitted to their car or not, and that they decide if they want to over-ride the speed limit - that should be their choice.'

British Gas has already introduced the technology for its vans - limiting them to 70mph. Jon York, fleet manager for the company said the system had reduced road accidents by company drivers.

He said: 'It does aid road safety, it does reduce incidents, but it is part of a wide-ranging number of initiatives within British Gas and one of those is driver training because you have to change people's behaviour.'

CfIT vice-chairman David Leeder said: 'This important report shows the very real benefits to motorists from the introduction and use of an ISA system - not just in road safety but also in terms of fuel and money saved.'

A London bus is taking to the streets equipped with technology which automatically keeps its speed to local limits.

Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is being developed by Transport for London (TfL) and uses a newly-introduced digital speed limit map of the city.

TfL also plans to install the ISAs in a taxi and 20 of its own vehicles.

The company claims road casualties in London could be cut by 10% if two-thirds of motorists used the devices.

Speeding points, penalty notices and fines would also be reduced, TfL says.

The technology enables drivers to select an option where acceleration is stopped automatically at the speed limit specific to any road in London within the M25 area.

The device can be disabled at the touch of a button, at which point it reverts to an advisory status where the current, legal speed limit is simply displayed as a driver aid.

There is also a complete override switch with disables the system entirely.

The practical uses of the technology will be tested in the six-month trial after which a report will be submitted to the Mayor of London and the technology will be made available to external organisations.

Southwark Council has already expressed an interest in fitting ISA to more than 300 of its vehicles.

The trial will monitor driver behaviour, journey times and the effect that driving within the speed limit has on vehicle emissions.

Chris Lines, Head of TfL's road safety unit, said: "We know the technology works, and now we want to know how drivers in all types of vehicles respond to it.

"ISA is intended as a road safety device, but if Londoners embrace this technology we may well see additional benefits including reduced congestion as a result of collisions, and reduced vehicle emissions, as drivers adopt a smoother driving style."

'Smiley face'

Tom Edwards, BBC London's Transport Correspondent, has road-tested the device for a day.

He said: "The ISA does work 99% of the time. Now and again it takes a few moments to work out what the speed limit is on the road you're on, but during the day I drove the car around London most the time it shows you the speed limit on a small satnav type screen to the right of the steering wheel.

"There are two modes for the gadget, in the advisory mode when you're within the speed limit it gives you a smiley face but as soon as you go over it turns to a frown and then if you go faster, it becomes a red grimace and starts bleeping.

"In the override mode it won't let you accelerate once you get over the speed limit - so you can have the accelerator pedal on the floor and nothing happens.

"It's unlikely there will ever be the political will to make this kind of device compulsory."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/8042749.stm

Some classes of vehicles (italics mine: not all classes of vehicles) are fitted with speed limiters and intelligent speed adaptation is being trialled in some places on a voluntary basis.

Speed limiters do not necessarily improve safety:

However, critics have warned that a similar, existing system for truck drivers showed that the devices could cause drivers to not give driving their full attention.

Claire Armstrong, from the road safety charity Safe Speed, said: "They drive along at 56, they stick their foot on the floor because they know the equipment will not go any faster, and they pretty much go into fatigue mode, or zombie mode.

"They stop paying attention to the road, and that makes it highly dangerous in those scenarios. You've taken the responsibility away from the driver and that is not good for road safety."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/4028967/Automatic-speed-limiting-devices-should-be-fitted-to-cars-says-report.html

It should be voluntary not compulsory?

The groups say the devices should be fitted on a voluntary basis and should contain a manual override feature, meaning drivers could break the speed limit if, for example, they were forced to overtake.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/4028967/Automatic-speed-limiting-devices-should-be-fitted-to-cars-says-report.html

In any case, who bears the cost? New driver's license, new number plate, speed limiter, encoder, tinted glass permit, next time will be who knows what? Rev limiters? Gaseous emissions tax?

If all all the connections checkout then 3 things might be involved

1. Possibly a faulty tcm
2. Possibly a faulty transmission
3. Witchcraft.

Get either Mastech Digital Multimeter, MS8261 Series (good enough/cheap) or Fluke 115 Compact True-RMS Digital Multimeter (professional level/costly)

Having read some opinions above, I have an alternative viewpoint.

I would say don't dismiss electrical fault as of yet P0766 is clearly an electrical fault relating to a shift solenoid.

I had a similar problem, although I never flushed my transmission and I think it is just not worth it to flush a transmission.

I replaced one transmission for another - the same problem cam back two weeks later.

Two codes - one that had to do with the input speed sensor and one that had to do with a shift solenoid.

I replaced the input speed sensor and the code went away but the one that had to do with the shift solenoid refused to go. Then after some days that input speed sensor died and I had to replace it with another, I knew something was wrong!

I went to a mechanic and asked him for a specialist in repairing electrical faults in the transmission but he gave me no reasonable suggestions other than that I should remove the thermostat that overheat is causing the components inside the transmission to fail; I went to the parts seller, he said time to change the transmission, but I ignored him; I also went to my preferred transmission repair shop and they told me I had an electrical fault (but I choose to disbelieve/disagree, especially since I have had a prior experience with their ecu/transmission electronics specialist who is as proud as he is gifted, and did I not just replace the transmission which worked well for 2 weeks and then kaput!), so I went to alldatadiy and it explained why I am having the codes.

After severally trying to find a car electrician that would be willing to use the printed alldatadiy guides to isolate the problem and failing because as soon as they heard transmission, they opted out of working with me, I decided to fix the problem myself. The problem was I have ordered for a professional level multimeter but it is not yet here so I was to some extent flying blind!

I spent a week, draining the ATF, replacing various shift solenoids all by myself, allowing the ATF to cool, tearing it apart again, changing the input speed sensor, dropping and cleaning the valve body without any improvement, then I decided, so how much time I have taken away from my business? This has got to stop!

That is when I went to the transmission repair shop the second time (hiding my face in shame sort of, well kidding) and then went back to the foreman to complain ( as if I did not know its an electrical fault, and is if I don't know the electrical guy myself)

I was then directed to him

The first day he spent nearly 6 hours troubleshooting the problem before deciding something is wrong with the wires that carry commands to and from the transmission to the ecu, by this time it was almost 5pm and I had to leave, he asked me do I want to go with the car or do I want to bring it back, I choose to bring it back.

The next week I brought the car and he and his team had after nearly 6 hours of carefully tracing cables that ran to the ECU from the transmission found and resolved the work.

He refused to tell me what he did to solve it, but I already know because alldatadiy told me. Do I really need to know how to do it? If I know what the problem is and who can solve it? That was the question on my mind after 1 week of trial and failure viz a viz the economic cost of DIY versus handing over to a professional.

Honestly, if you were in the car and heard the way it would change gears you would swear it was a mechanical fault. I also nearly swore I had a bad transmission BUT as it turns out the car is a delicate machine with a sensitive interplay of mechanical, hydraulic and even electronic/electrical components.

I would not after the above humbling lesson denigrate any lead until I solve the problem! It might be electrical afterall!!

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty shift solenoid 'D' valve
- Shift solenoid 'D' valve harness or connectors
- Shift solenoid 'D' valve circuit is open or shorted

Kashif:
This is still ongoing.......

My valve body was taken out, cleaned, compression springs retentioned, bores cleaned, but problem persisted.

Solenoids were replaced, but problem persisted. Tech kept saying nothing is wrong with the transmission.

Another working valvebody installed, and problem got worse - vehicle jumping between gears, flares, disengagement, sudden shift to first gear from wherever.

Output speed sensor replaced, problem persisted.

Another valve body installed, same wahala. Tech took transmission down, and took it apart. Said he found nothing wrong! angry

Tech recommended another fluid flush, but I would take that no more!

I ordered for a replacement transmission, which from my checks should work perfectly. Transmission installed, 90% of symptoms continue! cry angry

A seemingly perfect transmission is already burning the fluid!!!!!

Transmission seller changed tech and yesterday, this new tech told me that my transmission annex connector is corroded; that is the problem all the while. shocked Anybody heard about this before?

That's my story so far....

Any codes?

I once replaced a perfectly functioning transmission* as a result of two trouble codes, and two weeks later, same problem returned, so I said this time around, I won't replace it. That there has got to be another way.

* shifted well but won't enter overdrive, all other functions were right

I found a highly recommended transmission/ecu electrician who told me the vehicle has electrical problems, and after 2 days of tracing all the wiring and fixing the problem, my transmission issues were resolved.

I think breaking the vehicle breakdown analysis into mechanical, electrical, etc without some sort of collaboration among the various folks makes troubleshooting harder.

Maybe the vehicle/transmission has got electrical faults but your previous mechanic is going about it mechanically... just a guess... an an enthusiast, not a specialist

I once personally fixed my transmission issues by tracing the wiring and discovering there was no ground, but I wasn't capable of fixing this one because it involved the wiring harness leading to the ECU, and I had already lost one week trying to personally patiently troubleshoot the issue at the expense of a contract with much larger financial stakes than the value of the transmission and the labour to fix it by those who do it day day out, so in the end I decided to contract it out and I am happy I did because the issue was sorted out in less than 12 hours spread across 2 days

Here’s the Quickest Volkswagen Ever, the Mental Breakdown Dragster - Video

The Volkswagen Type 2, also known as the Transporter, Kombi or Camper, is regarded to as a slow hippie carrier used to storm the beaches back in the day. It came in many variations and also represents one of the forerunners of the modern cargo/passenger vans.

Speaking about it’s variations, there was even a pickup based on the boxy van. We can’t say how good was at hauling stuff back in the day, but we can surely tell you it makes for a killer dragster now as you can see here.

The devilish thing you will witness in action is definitely not running on cooking oil and the only thing its driver smokes are big fat sticky tires. An old 1965 split-screen Volkswagen pickup got a new life as a G-pushing, time-beating dragster.

What you see here is the creation of car customization guru Wayne Allman, who spent about 10 years turning the pile of rust into a 179 mph dragster. The only thing reminding about it’s utilitarian life is the cab, which got chopped, stripped out of everything and bolted down to a specially fabricated tubular chassis.

When a manufacturer such as BMW decides to dump a long term partner (of over 40 years) for a new one, sit up and take note!

Also, ask why!!

Before I would have said get Mobil 1, now I would say if you can lay your hands on Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with PurePlus Technology OR Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology if you want not just best, but the very best!

You can read more here: http://www.shell.com/global/products-services/on-the-road/oils-lubricants/cars/shell-helix-pureplus.html and here http://www.pennzoil.com/technology-of-clean/why-pennzoil-motor-oil/

Ferrari and BMW are taking the lead with the switch, I think you should because I am

I've fixed the fault. the new tensioner I bought wasn't any better than the faulty one in the car. I had to change it and that really worked.

I think it is best practice to replace all 3 with new at the same time ( belt, tensioner and pulley) if you want everything to work to factory specifications and if you travel a lot and do not wish to be stranded

I would have, but where and 5k for something that may or may not work. I have asked on a post above who knew where and got no answers. I got tired of looking for it even showing them pictures, most part dealers had no idea. The fabrication parts and labour isnt more than 1k. Besides "Cheapest Way To Deal With P0420?" is the thread's title.

Though this news is old, wouldn't it be nice to "officially" retrofit an old car at the hands of the original makers?

I'd sign up for it!

Makes so much sense given the resources at their disposal, they would do the job at a price point that individuals would not match due to economies of scale to their advantage.

Of course they do restore cars from time to time, but it seems it is not a mass market thing
Car Talk / Re: How Do I Buy New Gear Unit(13-pins) For Replacement In Toyota Camry 09 Model?. by IdaraCHODB(m): 4:13pm On Jan 30, 2015
blestman:
@sienna, automatic transmissions dont last forever, they undergo wears as the mileage of the car increases, with a mileage of about 150,000 be prepared for a new transmission.and guess what, the white man sells the car to us at the first sign of failure as he is not ready to spend $1500 buying a transmission not including the cost of replacement. so u can c why we have a high rate of transmission failure,we buy used cars whose transmission are already failing.. am currently using a10 pin automatic transmission for my camry 2007 se instead of the 13pin and the challenge i see now is difficultly in climbing some bumps( it lacks power and i get stuck sometimes and i hav to reverse and climb wit some momentum) but the car drives pretty well..

There is another issue - manufacturer design errors, and buying tokunbo means you still have to grapple with those.

In a best case scenario, it is better to buy a remanufactured transmissions not tokunbo, but like you said who wants to spend $1,500.00 or so on a transmission.

If my transmission ever fails again, and its a car I am in love with, that is what I would do, for optimal peace of mind

Car Talk / Mini Cooper? Safe Car! But Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent are death traps! by IdaraCHODB(m): 10:17am On Jan 30, 2015
What do you consider before buying a car? its ability to save you in the event of a crash or its style and form?

Please read on....and make up your mind

More than 30,000 people a year still die on American roads, and while that toll has been steadily declining for a decade, it still represents a massive, unending tragedy. Around the world, those figures are climbing, as more people spend more time behind the wheel. Nothing drives advocates of tech such as driverless cars like the potential for sharply reducing the cost in human lives of driving.

Today came a piece of good news in that fight: We are closer than we thought to cars that could prevent all their drivers from dying in a wreck. The bad news? There's still decades of work ahead.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the research arm of the nation's auto insurance companies, studied driver deaths between 2009 and 2012 for mass-market vehicles. (It did not examine passenger deaths due to unreliable data.) Overall, it found that new models with newer technology, especially stability control, had cut the overall death rate in vehicles by a third in the three years since it had last run the numbers. Had vehicle tech been frozen at 1985 levels, the IIHS estimates by 2012 an additional 7,700 people would have died in crashes.
....

The IIHS calculates its death rate per years registered of a particular model; the industry average is 28 deaths per one million registered years for 2011 models in 2012; in 2008, the rate was 48. When it dug deeper, the IIHS found nine 2011 models that had no recorded deaths of drivers — the first time the group had found any such vehicles. Six of them were SUVs; overall, SUVs had the lowest death rates of any vehicle type, mostly due to the mandate of electronic stability controls and the physics of larger vehicles offering more protection from the forces of a crash than smaller ones. (Compared to 2004 models, SUVs from the 2011 model-year on have a rollover rate that's 75 percent less.)

But the IIHS also gave out a warning that the gap betwen the best and the worst cars at preventing fatal crashes had widened. The rates in the IIHS study are corrected for demographics (young drivers who typically buy smaller vehicles tend to crash more frequently) but even after that adjustment, small cars dominate the most lethal list:
.....

"The complete elimination of traffic deaths is still many decades away, and, along with vehicle improvements, getting there will require changes in road design and public policy that can help protect all road users," said David Zuby, IIHS executive vice president and chief research officer. "Still, the rise in the number of vehicles with zero driver deaths shows what's possible."

The newest vehicles have gone well beyond stability control to include tricks like automatic emergency braking and radar-based cruise control to slow down the vehicle automatically in traffic. The safety benefits of those technologies have not yet been fully measured, but their real benefit may not become visible until they're available outside luxury models — especially the small cars that still pose the greatest risk.
