I appreciate you all for your continuous comments and encouragements, I wish you all good times and a happy New year, I would update more during the day,please make do with the little, I updated now.

Legun knocked heavily for Arore to hear her,he was impatient, Maku is dying.

legun: ( knocking) Arore please come out,there is trouble( he adjusted Maku who still lay helpless on his shoulder) Arore Maku is dying!( he shouted, as Arore mother came out).

mother: ( afraid) what trouble?, what happen? hope Arore didn't cause any trouble ( Arore came out behind her).

Arore: ( she had sighted Maku on Legun's shoulder, she rushed to him and they brought him down gently) Ori mi o! what happen ( Legun turned Maku over) yeeeeh! who did this? who did this?( she faced Legun and hold his skirt).

legun: ( in tears) it was ogbo,he deceived me away and kill his Majesty.

Arore: ( she hugged Maku's lifeless body) I told you,but you would not listen, our love is forbidden, we can't last long ( she shook her head bitterly as tears danced down her cheeks) oh,Maku, Maaaaaku!( she wept bitterly as her mother tried to comfort her).

legun: please do something, save him,I believe you can save him( he hold her legs) please I beg you with the god you serve,I beg you with your mother standing here, please save Maku, he mustn't die, he mustn't die( he burst into tears).

Arore knew at that very moment,that she is the only hope of Maku survival, if she delayed in taking steps, Maku would be lost for ever,right now she had to bind his soul from leaving his body.

Arore: wait for me( she hurried inside and came back with a long black cloth) help me hold him straight ( Legun hold Maku as Arore wrapped him tightly with the black cloth as she muttered incantations to delay death)

Arore repeated the incantations until she finished wrapping him,from his head to his feet, it was done,his spirit is bounded to his body,he won't die now, but they have to be very fast,death cannot be deceived for long.

Arore she faced her mother) iya,go sleep, I want to reach somewhere now with Legun( she faced Legun, )please help me get him up, we have somewhere to go now.

legun carried Maku's body and followed Arore as she hurried away into the darkness, he could hear dogs barking and howling mournfully, he prays that Maku would live, because if he doesn't, there is no reason for him to live again, he would kill himself, but before then he will make sure, he search for ogbo and kill him brutally, he swear that he would.

Ogbo had cross the great stream, he had done it,he had made Maku pay, in his next life,he would watch how he talks to people, now he had to hurry to Oyo, he had a big plan,he is successful with his first plan, is other plan is to go to Oyo and declare Maku dead.

He parted the thick shrubs as he hurried through the bush,he is taking the shortest route to Oyo, he will inform Ari of his son's death, how he tried to save him but Aro people killed him brutally, how Aro people spared him to delivered the message to Ari,
how the Aros had attacked Usi with impunity and wiped out usije and usialo,how they had boasted that Oyo lives in old glory and cannot proof it to them.

He was happy with his plan, if he successfully, delivers the message to Ari, Aro is doomed,the fate of the Aros will be likened to the ejembas, Aro would be wiped out,and amidst the chaos and anarchy he would capture chilo as a slave and take her as his concubine.

The thought warm his heart,if he can kill his own master, there is nothing he can't achieve again, he would surely get chilo,he would make her watch Oyeku die, and he would made sure chilo end up in his bed.

He had got to Oyo border,it was night but he could see the farmlands, he could see the dump sites,he laughed and rested his buttocks on a fallen tree," Ari, I got a good news for you ", he said with a wicked smile.

Legun could not stop running,why was he so foolish to leave ogbo alone with his Majesty, he prayed his Majesty is alright, he leaps as he ran,ogbo is a risk, he should have remember this.

Ogbo had told him that his Majesty had ordered both of them to go fish, that his Majesty is hungry, ogbo had quickly left for the stream after saying this, Legun could have go confirmed this,but the fact that ogbo had left for the stream made him believe that his Majesty actually sent him.

He had hurried to the stream too,but on getting to the stream, he couldn't find ogbo, he searched everywhere, but he wasn't at the stream, that was when it dawn on him that his Majesty is in trouble, ogbo is up to something.

Maku's hut is now in sight, he ran fast and entered the dark hut,everywhere was dark,but he knew where Maku usually lies.

legun:my lord! my lord! are you alright ( he bent down and tried to find Maku with his fingers, he could feel is with,it was cold) Maku! ( he whispered) Maku!,( he stood up and look for the lamp and lit it as he hurried to the direction of Maku, he could see him now,his mouth was wide upon as his hand rested on his bloody abdomen,blood was everywhere, he could see his own legs, he had stepped on Maku warm blood).

Legun knelt down slowly as he crawled towards the body,he felt weak, he felt deep sorrow, he couldn't believe the reality,he couldn't believe the strong and vibrant Maku, could look so helpless and fragile.

He wailed as he clung unto Maku, shouting his name as he hit chest,he could feel Maku sigh,he is alive, he is not dead.

legun: ( he shook Maku's head) Maku, are you there, wake up,your father wants you, don't die( he burst into tears) who would help me now?, who did I know in this land?, somebody help,help me wake Maku ( he shouted) Maku wake up.

He quickly thought about Arore, yes, Arore, he would take him to Arore, she may be able to do something, he lifted Maku cold body and rested him on his shoulder as he gently pass him through the door and hurried off to Arore's hut.

Two weeks later


Maku slept on his mat,he had been exhausted after today's activities, his normal daily routine is to wake up,head to Arore's hut, help her with her sales, then they would head to his own hut at night, there they would make love passionately.

And immediately, Arore would return back to her own hut that same night. He had thought of marrying her,but right now,he could not afford her bride price. He had acquired a pieces of land, where he had started farming, he would wait till harvest and from the fruit of harvest, he would pay her bride price.

Before he slept this night, he had thought about his father,Ari. He knew his father had missed him and would want to see him,but he just couldn't even thought of living Aro, this place suits him,he hates the boring life of the palace, he only have fun by making love to maidens all around.

But here in Aro, he was free,and he had Arore beside him,with Arore, he had everything he needs. He had saw his brother Deolu last week he was very surprised and happy to see him,Deolu had delivered the message of his father to him,but Maku had refused to come home.

Deolu pleaded for him to come but he refused,he had told Deolu to tell his father that when it is time, he would show himself.
Deolu had went back to Oyo feeling bad and disappointed,now,he had missed his father too.

He knew his father loved him,his father had made him his favorite son,he knew he is not worthy of it,but he doesn't know why,his father specially loves him,the only person he knew that his father loved more than him is Irawo.

Tonight,after Arore left his hut,he felt lonely, ogbo and legun were outside, given them privacy, but right now,he can't find both of them, the hut was very quiet, he tried to sleep but he can't,he wasn't feeling sleepy at all.

But he had to sleep now, he had a lot to do on his farm tomorrow, so he had to sleep well and refresh. So he closed his eyes and forced himself to sleep.
Just as sleep was taking him gradually, he saw a shadow crawling towards him,where he lie, he thought it was his eyes deceiving him,but no,it was real,someone had entered his hut,he tried to stand up,but someone pounced on him,and pin him down,from the little light he could figure the shape, it was ogbo, he couldn't believe the reality.

He could see ogbo raise his hands up holding a dagger,and brought it down,Maku reflexively hold the dagger by the blade, he winced in pain as the blade cut into his palm,he could see as ogbo tried to withdraw the knife from him.


Maku: ogbo what are you doing?( he was in pains as the dagger ran deeper into his flesh) why do you want to kill me?

ogbo: ( struggling to withdraw the knife) shut up and die silently you fool

Maku: ( he screamed) legun! legun! help me,come now( he is growing weak gradually as he bled).

ogbo: ( he laughed) scream as loud as you can,that fool is at the stream now fishing for you,no one would help you now( with great strength he withdrew the dagger cutting Maku deeper,then with great effort he drove the dagger into his navel, he removed the dagger as Maku shook and drove it in again, this time,he squeezed the dagger in his navel with all the wickedness he could summon,he could hear Maku gasping for breath as he tried to remove the dagger, but his hands were weak now,he could feel his strength melting away,his world became dark and then he gave up.

Deolu and his men split themselves into five groups, they had entered into Aro village, searching for Maku, they had their tribal marks,wearing an head scarf that covered their cheeks,they had decided to return to the stream by night.

The cloud is dark,the breeze is violently blowing, bending trees left and right as they made mournful sounds like the oro deity, goats are running helter skelter, bleating as they ran,it is about to rain.

Deolu was with three of his men,the others are somewhere else looking for Maku. Deolu is looking for a hut that they can use to shelter till the rain would stop.

Deolu: there is a hut there ( he pointed) let go ask for shelter( they rushed towards the hut with his men)

Deolu: good evening to the gentle dwellers of this hut( there was no response, perhaps the noise of the rain had drown his voice, he was about to greet louder when a tall,strong looking young man came out).

Oyeku: good evening to you too,hope it is peace?

Deolu: good evening Sir, we are travelers, we are passing through this land,and it is about to rain, would you be merciful and allow us take shelter in your hut,till the rain stops,then we would leave.

Oyeku observed them well,they are indeed strangers,but he would not keep them outside to the mercy of rain and cold.

Oyeku: come inside ( he stepped aside,so that they could enter).

Deolu & men: thank you Sir( they entered).

The interior of the hut was very wide and spacious, it smells of herbs,and grains,and the heat from the earthen stove warm the atmosphere.
They sat on a long bench observing the hut,they could see, broken calabash at a corner, the hut roof is darken with smoke, high on the roof are hung smoked corn and antelope skin.
From his intuition, Deolu knew the occupants of the hut are hunters or warriors. Deolu could see Oyeku, sitting his back against the wall observing the the strangers.
Deolu is getting uncomfortable with the silence, so he decided to spice the room.

Deolu: would you mind if sing,I won't sing too loud, but I know you will enjoy it ( he ask oyeku, Oyeku was silent for a moment then he nodded).

He finished the song with a smile. Oyeku was impressed, the song was an advice,a warning, and the melody was hypnotising, he wished the song to continue, he want to hear the part,where shango would be punished for stealing Ogun love.

Maku sat on a bamboo bench,he was waiting for Arore to be through with her bath. She always bath for a long time, and it always get him impatient. she had told him that she would go to the palm wine tapper to get two large calabash of wine,and he had responded that he would go with her.

Legun was sitting adjacent Maku, he was drinking.

Maku: Arore, come out this minute or I come meet you in the bathroom now( he shouted for her to hear).

Arore: it is a forbidden thing in our land, don't dare it( she shouted back).

Maku: you know what I can do, if I stand up now,no turning back, I will make sure I wash you myself( he laughed)

Arore: come

Maku: you said?

Arore: come

He stood up and rushed to the bathroom, he lifted the palm leave and jumped inside,he could see the large bathing pot and the little calabash basin, but he couldn't see Arore.

Maku: ( confused) where are you?


Arore: here( Maku turn around but there was no body)

Maku: ( getting scared) stop that play and come out now.

Arore: are you afraid ( Maku turn around and saw her, she was naked and dripping with water, her body was making him go leery) am I strange ( she was serious)

Maku;( he tried to suckle her breast,but she pushed his mouth away) okay! okay, honestly, you are strange, but to me you are pleasantly strange, I mean, look at your ( he cupped her breast and suckle it as Arore laughed and pushed him away).

Arore tears had gathered in her eyes) I am afraid that I would love you and I must not,Maku I am assigned to punish you,the great goddess sent me to punish you( she knelt down,sobbing)but I can't, I tried, but I can't, Maku I love you, but this love is dangerous, I had freed you from my enchantment long ago,thinking you would leave me,but here you are( she shook her head as tears roll down her cheeks) our love can't last,sorrow would be the outcome of our love,Maku go your way,let me go mine,go back to Oyo, your father wants you,you must go( Maku rose her up and hugged her as tears flowed down his nose).

Maku: ( he choked with tears) am ready to do anything for our love Arore, I would not leave you,I swear I won't, whatever would be the outcome of our love,I am ready for it( he adjusted her and stared into her eyes) I am ready to risk this love,are you ready too?

Arore: ( she cried out loud as she hugged Maku tight, Maku cried too,and for once in his mind, he begged the great goddess to forgive him and bless their love).

The news of the fall of usije and usialo had spread to all Usi land. They had received the news with anger and pity,but they don't know the perpetrators, they suspect it was an Aro attack, but there was no evidence, they had send messages to Oyo to inform Ari that one two of his protectorate villages had been attacked.

The usis are waiting for Ari's reply, they had visited usije and usialo, they could see the ruin, the burnt hurts,they could see,bloated corpse that had swollen out of their shallow graves,their was a rotten odour,the whole place smelt of death and decay.

The three Usi villages had made an alliance, an alliance that produced three thousand warriors,they would revenge on any land that had done these to usije and Usialo.

Chapter fourteen

Deolu had left Oyo and traveled to ibiru, he knew Maku would never be at Usi, Maku would go to a low place where no one knows him.
When he got to ibiru, he couldn't find Maku there, so he is now on his way to Aro with ten of his personal warriors.

He had heard a lot about Aro, their hatred for oyos, their proud King, their proud spirit and their history of self reliance. He had never been at Aro before but he knows a lot about them,his search for Maku may not be easy,but he had to,but whatever he does he must not steer up trouble, it could endanger his life and the life of his brother, Maku.

Deolu does not believe in strength and violence, he believes in diplomatic wits,his wisdom is his greatest asset,Deolu is very clever,everyone knows that,he is not too good looking, but every maidens always wants him. Deolu is talented in art,dancing, chanting, poetry and playing of fere( flute).

Wherever he goes to,people fall in love with him,both men and women,old and young.
but these land he is going to,no one knows him there and he had to keep his identity as a royal Prince a secret.

They came off the canoe and observe this side of the stream, it was beautiful,Deolu could make a poem about the stream right now, but his literary wit his not active for now,he is very nervous, it is just early morning and they could hear voices of maidens approaching the stream to get water.

Oyeku: I am very sorry chilo, if I made you feel bad by my reactions and words this evening,you should know that I never love anyone except you, I swear, please look at me( he turn are around to see her covering her mouth with her hand,suppressing her laughter) why are you laughing?, what is wrong?.

But,he could not possess anyone who had experienced humanity,so he tampers with foetus. This foetus will finally grow up to be a man,but he will be more of an slowpoke that does not fit the human society,because of this pregnant women had to take caution of the time they move around, lest they become unfortunate.

Another one is Shigidi,shigidi is short, muscular and bulky, he lurks around the shadows,he is a mischievous demon that likes to cause men pain and discomfort by choking them in their sleep.

Shigidi will wander round human huts at midnight searching for a man whose Ori is sleeping,he would attack the sleeping man and choke him till his Ori or any of his ancestral god chases the Shigidi away,if a man is so unlucky and unfortunate that he had no Ori or any other protective deity, Shigidi would choke him till death.

Because Shigidi is all ways visiting human society and because of their reckless guts of physically struggling with men,they are usually captured by wise men, who may use them for some evil purpose.
There are also many more,Abikus,Emeres and other nature dwelling demons like iroko.


Baba was right, fears has crept into, him,now,he couldn't go to his room,baba had left him outside after the great explanation, it is already night, and he his hungry,Baba's mysticism had made him forgot his sorrows for now.

He remembered how chilo left him this evening, he knew she needed an explanation,he had to go see her,before it get too late. He stood up and informed baba that he wants to see chilo.

He could see her face as the flame from the earthen stove illuminated the surrounding,she was talking with her mother, he wondered what she is probably discussing with her mother, he could see her mother laughing, certainly, it wasn't about their tussle this evening.

He walked slowly towards the mother and daughter, they had both stopped talking and watch him come.

Some ambitious men,could pay demons a friendly visit to make deals and pacts that will benefit the two party, when a demon fulfill his part,then a man must also fulfil his own part,this pact may become a covenant overtime, a covenant may last a life time for a man, but demons lives longer so they extend the covenant to other descendant of men who makes pacts.

Another is Egbere, this demon is very fond of humans,he always want to be found in human society, immediately an egbere,grows enough to walk and move,it begins to desire to go to human society, and immediately it feet is strong enough, he picks his mat and travels to human society, sleeping wherever sleeps meet him,but when an egbere get to the human society, he would not find companion, because he is ugly and strange, full of sores and stinking, egbere would cry and cry, but men would hate him more,Then by the Ashe olodumare had given to him, he would sought to possess a human body,so that he can mingle with humans.

Oyeku sat outside the his hut,chilo sat beside beside him keeping his company, it was evening,the sunset was beautiful, the breeze blowed gentle, and the surrounding smelt like fresh grass.
Every minute chilo would touch Oyeku's head and feel his temperature.

Chilo: should I bring you food? you haven't eaten ever since

Oyeku he shook his head and shrugged) I don't want to eat, I'll vomit

Oyeku fever has gone down and he is feeling better now,but he couldn't get Dede off his mind,and he doesn't even want her memory to go,he blame himself for not asking Ichendu to give her to him,after all Ichendu was nice to him, but cowardice and doubt made him lose Dede.

The memory of her slain body,came back to him,and a tear dropped from his eyes. He would never see Dede again.

Chilo: you are still crying, is there something more between you and this Dede ( she is getting annoyed and suspicious) because if not that there is something more,you would have stop all these, after all,she wasn't the only slave that was killed.

Oyeku was stung, how could chilo talk like this, isn't she a human too?, how could she expect him to forget Dede so easily, no, he can't.

She didn't say more than that, then she traveled away with the wind, Ayeni had stood up and search for Oyeku in his room, but he wasn't there,he search the whole compound, he couldn't find him.

He finally decided to seek spiritual assistance, he had consult his clairvoyance demon, who told him Oyeku is about to be attacked by a wicked demon, he immediately began work,he started invoking the Ori( guardian force) of Oyeku, because only Ori could save Oyeku at that point, if his Ori is fortunate, it will respond and bring him home, but if his Ori is unfortunate Oyeku shall be under the mercy of the demon.

He had called his Ori three times and fortunately it responded and set Oyeku free from the grip of the demon, now everything was clear.

Ayeni: ( speaking to chilo) my daughter, you go home, I will talk to Oyeku ( chilo kneeled and took her leave,Ayeni faced Oyeku) you ,you are playing two girls at the same time ( Oyeku wanted to speak but baba waved him down) tomorrow, cheer yourself up and go meet her,tell her sweet things, and then come back and tell me the outcome.

Oyeku couldn't help but laugh at baba ancient romance techniques of cheats,baba has lit his mood.

Chilo woke up refreshed, she was happy and smiling, stood up and greeted her sleeping mother, she quickly fetch her pot and headed to the stream as she hum a song.
she was about making the bend towards the stream path,when someone called her,it was ife,Oyeku mother.

Ife: my daughter good morning, please have you seen Oyeku this morning?, he ran away from home this morning and he was very sick. We thought he would be with you.

Chilo was alarmed, Oyeku was sick and he ran away from home, it doesn't make sense,what could make him run away,and where could he be be?.

Chilo: I haven't seen him today, and as a matter of fact,I am just waking up from sleep, I was just about to go get water from the stream as you can see,but what could have gotten into Oyeku?, and I never knew he was sick,I saw him yesterday, and he was healthy.

Ife: it all started last night, when he went out,only to come back home with a fever,oh!,where can he be now?, you know what? you can go, I will go check for him at ola place,Ayeni has gone to check him at Uzo hut.

Chilo: go mother, I would quickly go to the stream and fetch a pot, then I would join you in the search.

Ife: thank you my daughter, I would be going now( she turned and left)

Chilo resumed to the stream,thinking about the mystery situation at hand, she did not seems to understand what is going on. What could make Oyeku to run away from home? was he angered?, where could he have run to.

She kept on thinking till she got the stream, behold, she saw Oyeku in the stream, he was washing himself, his face was expressionless, his eyes were red. He had seen her,so she walked straight towards him.

Chilo: Oyeku, what is wrong?,( she dropped her pot and stooped) everyone is at home searching for, you left everyone anxious, please talk to me,what is wrong?.

Oyeku forded his way to the shore and came out of the water,he was dripping with water,Chilo could see a tear drop from his eyes,he walked to a rock and sat down as the sun shone in his wet dark skin.

Chilo walked to him and held his wet hands,despite the cold water,his body was still hot, indeed he has a fever. She touched his head, it was hot too.

Chilo: Oyeku, you have fever,you should be home taking treatments, please, come let go home quickly, your body is too hot ( she tried to pull him up,but Oyeku pulled her down).

Oyeku: ( he spoke silently and slowly, and his voice cracks when ever he tries to weep) Our men conquered usialo, we took slaves,plenty slaves, our men ran after usialo maidens and deflowered them,then( he paused as he try to stop himself from crying) then she came to me,Dede came to me, she told me to protect her,that she doesn't want to be raped,she doesn't want to die,I promised her to protect her, that I would save her and return her to usialo, I promised her that I would not allow her to die( he burst into tears),but I have failed, she was slaughtered last night, they cut her neck( he wept weakly as chilo brought his head to her bosom and consoled him like a mother consoling his son, other maidens are at the stream now,but the two lovers were still together.




Ogbo was mad, he couldn't bear it,he had tried to kidnap chilo at the stream today, but that stupid boy had arrived,accompanied by flies,he hid himself and prayed that the fool will leave quickly,but the boy had take his time to wash himself, not only that ,he had also taking his time to weep the way his parent would weep over him,when he Ogbo would kill him.

He almost, tried to sneak to the fool and stab him, but he had heard footsteps, it was chilo, she is here,he felt defeated. He had watch her expression as she saw Oyeku, her expression was full of love and concern,he became even angry at chilo too.

What made him totally mad, was when chilo hugged that boy, he couldn't bear the sight, he sneaked away, anger burnt in his heart like fire,he knows now that he would kill somebody soon, he would kill that boy,he tried to calm himself, but he couldn't.

Now,he is at Maku hut,where they had been staying, but he meet no one at home,he was hungry, really hungry, he would have gone to the stream to go fish,but he can't,no he can't, he would wait for legun and his Majesty, surely they would come home with food.



Arore sat under the improvised shade at the market, people are everywhere, noises from every direction, but she wasn't distracted, her attention was on Maku. He was busy attending to customers, and casting evil glances to men who eyes Arore, Arore noticed this and she laughed inside.

She observed Maku, he is different, very different, he had never seen a man like him before,a man that would make her forfeit her assignment, she watched as he poured wine from gourd to gourd,cracking jokes with everybody,but will always cast a glance at her every minute to be sure she is still there.

Oyeku froze with shock and emotions, he couldn't believe his eyes, right at his front lies Dede slain body,her neck has been cut, clotted blood covered her face, her eyes were wide open staring up at the sky,she was sprawled among the other corpse,the horror was great.
Oyeku fell on his knees,looking at the once beautiful, lively and charming Dede,now she is nothing but horror, flies were patrolling over the corpse,rigor mortis is setting in gradually.

Oyeku vomited, as tried to move her stiff corpse from her comrades, her stiff corpse was heavy,but Oyeku refused to dragged her,he carried her like a doll, fluids were were coming out of her neck, dripping on his body, but Oyeku did not bring her down.

He carried her to a more decent site,then he dropped her gently and searched for a stick, he started digging a grave,the earth was loose so he was able to dig a deep grave with the stick. When he was done,he carried her and dropped her gently into the hole,her feet first then her head. He covered her with the muddy earth and made sure he identified the burial sight with a stick.

The burial is done, Dede is laid. He staggered away to the stream as some overzealous crew of flies went after him
