Move aside Dubai. China now has what is billed as the world's largest building — a vast, wavy rectangular box of glass and steel that will house shops, hotels, offices and a faux ocean beach with a huge LED screen for video sunsets.

The mammoth New Century Global Center that opened last month in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu has 1.7 million square meters (19 million square feet) of floor space — or about 329 football fields — edging out the previous record-holder, the Dubai airport.

The structure is half a kilometer long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high.

The New Century project is a sign that China's growth has spread from the country's more prosperous eastern and southern regions to the west, where wages are lower and the central government has encouraged development with subsidies and tax breaks. With its booming economy, China has become home to some of the largest and tallest buildings in the world.

Backed by local governments, the building in a planned urban district south of Chengdu aims to boost the global stature of the capital city of Sichuan province, known for its spicy cuisine.

Once fully completed, the centerpiece of the building will be a water park with a 400-meter coast and beaches under a gigantic glass dome. Up to 6,000 visitors at a time will be able to sunbathe, play in a wave pool, sip cocktails or feast on seafood. A 150-meter-by-40-meter LED screen will rise above a section of water with videos of an ocean horizon.

The center will include two five-star hotels as well as high-end boutiques set in a replica of a Mediterranean town under faux blue skies. The shopping section has been open to the public since late June, though the building's office space has been occupied for some time.

The building also has a 14-screen movie theater and an ice rink.

LAGOS— Anti-robbery policemen attached to Oko-Oba division have arrested a 32-year-old man who allegedly specialised in bugling churches around Oko-Oba area of Lagos.

The suspect identified as Sannu Umaru was reportedly caught in the act inside one of the Pentecostal churches in Oko-Oba, weekend.

Umaru who claimed to be son of a retired army personnel, told policemen during interrogation that he preferred stealing from churches because of the security lapses.

Preliminary investigation, according to police sources, revealed that Umaru was allegedly involved in some robbery incidents in churches around the area. Before his arrest, he allegedly bugled a church where he made away with some musical instruments.

According to Police sources, “on that fateful night, he scaled the fence of the church and went to where the musical instruments were. As he was about carrying the piano valued close to half a million naira, one of the instruments fell down and attracted the night guards who went for him.

“He jumped through the fence with one of the instruments he stole. But he was apprehended by residents of the area who were alerted by the the guards and was brought to the station. He was found to have also burgled another church within the week.”

In his confessional statement, Umaru blamed his indulgence on frustration, saying: “I was tempted to steal because of the death of my father. After his death, I went into scavenging but did not succeed. I chose to bugle churches because it is easier than any other place.

“Aside this, I do not need to be armed. I was scared of carrying arms and did not want to spill blood. That is why I considered stealing in churches as a gentleman’s way.

“What I do is, anytime I go there, I would search the offering boxes. At times I would find money inside, while at other times I would not.

“At Saint Barnabas Church, I did not find any money inside the offering box. So, I decided to steal their music instrument.”

Police sources said Umaru had been charged to court.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — President Barack Obama met privately Saturday with the family of Nelson Mandela.
The meeting was held in Johannesburg at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, part of the former South African president's foundation.
It lasted for about a half hour, enough time for a small crowd to gather outside for Obama's departure.
The White House says Obama met with two of Mandela's daughters and several grandchildren.
He will not meet with the ailing 94-year-old Mandela, who is hospitalized with a lung infection. The White House says the decision was made in accordance with the wishes of Mandela's family.
The White House initially said first lady Michelle Obama would attend, b
ut later said she did not accompany the president. Mrs. Obama met Mandela during her trip to Africa in 2011.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A Vatican official has been arrested by Italian police for allegedly trying to illegally bring 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into the country from Switzerland with a private jet.
Prosecutor Nello Rossi says Monsignor Nunzio Scarano is accused of corruption and slander stemming from the plot and was being held at a Rome prison.
He was allegedly asked by friends to bring back the money that had been given to financier Giovanni Carenzio in Switzerland. Scarano is supposed to have asked Giovanni Zito, a military official, to bring the money back by jet, avoiding customs.
Scarano was allegedly due to pay Zito a commission of 600,000 euros for the work. He paid only an initial installment of 400,000 euros before being arrested.

Rome (CNN) -- James Gandolfini probably died of a heart attack, according to the head of a Rome hospital's emergency department where the actor was taken after falling ill at a hotel in the Italian capital.

James Gandolfini, who gained fame playing a memorable mafia boss on HBO's "The Sopranos," died after suffering a possible heart attack in Italy on Wednesday, June 19. Pictured, Gandolfini at the premier of "Zero Dark Thirty" in 2012.

The body of the actor was transferred to the morgue at the Policlinico Umberto I hospital in Rome early Thursday, where it awaited an autopsy.

By law, medical examiners in Italy are required to carry out the postmortem 24 hours after the body's arrival in the morgue, a hospital spokesman said.

Professor Claudio Modini, head of the emergency department where the actor was taken, said he could not be certain of the cause of death until after the autopsy -- but it was "probably a natural cause of death, myocardial infarction," or heart attack.

Emergency room doctors had not noted any suspicious factors, such as alcohol, on his medical report, he said.

Ambulance staff tried to resuscitate the actor at the hotel, and further efforts were made when he reached the emergency room, Modini said, but Gandolfini was dead when he arrived at the hospital, and "there was nothing to do."

Though the cause of death is not confirmed, his managers also believe that a heart attack killed the man who portrayed Tony Soprano, a washed-up mob boss prone to keeling over from panic attacks, at age 51.

Before Italian authorities can release Gandolfini's remains for transport back to the United States, the U.S. Embassy in Rome must issue a death certificate.

No one from the embassy or the actor's family has contacted the morgue yet, morgue spokesman Antonio Spasola said Thursday morning.

The U.S. Embassy said it was "deeply upset" by the news of Gandolfini's premature death but had not yet received any official confirmation from local authorities. The embassy "will offer any proper assistance to the family when they request it," its statement said.

Kim Kardashian gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, omg! can confirm.

Kardashian, 32, had West, 36, by her side as they welcomed their daughter into the world.
"Kim got sick last night and had the baby early," a hospital source revealed to Us Weekly. "They're all doing great and amazing!"
Despite reports that their baby was due in July, multiple sources tell omg! the date was always mid-June.
And although no name has been announced yet, an E! Online source says, "Kim told friends and family in weeks leading up to the birth that the name 'will start with a K.'"
West and Kardashian — both first-time parents — have been dating since April 2012. On December 30, 2012, West announced that his girlfriend was pregnant during his Atlantic City concert.
"Stop the music and make some noise for my baby mama," West said onstage, pointing to Kim, who was in the audience.
The high-profile couple kept the gender of their baby quiet until June, when Kardashian revealed she was having a girl on the season 8 premiere of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
"Who doesn't want a girl?" Kardashian said, adding that West was hoping for a daughter as well. Although their baby's gender was revealed on national television, Kardashian has vowed that her child will not appear on her hit reality show.
And who can blame her? It certainly hasn't been an easy nine months for Kardashian.
