thoth: The answer to these questions takes you right back to Colonialism(for how we came to accept it) and to neocolonialism (for why we still Practice it) . People always think of Money and raw materials whenever neocolonialism is mentioned but the truth is that such exploitation cannot be sustained if only our economy is on stranglehold, the people will wake up and overhaul the system, or they could perpetually fight till the Colonists gets worn out (Afghanistan etc) . There must be "support systems" or auxiliaries which creates the condition for sustaining such atrocities, auxiliaries in the form of Religious Colonialism, Academic Colonialism, Cultural Colonialism, these three factors is what shapes the society and once you have a hold on it you will have a hold on that society, some people summarily term a situation whereby the colonists are in control of all three as "Mental Enslavement" , "Psychological Domination" etc but i strongly believe it serves more positive purpose to isolate it into three , it helps in defining the problems which are to be solved. The Pan Africanist that does not understand this order of things will always get stuck while trying to find a solution since what he sees around him will not make sense, he would ask himself why are African leaders so scared of them since you don't see any European standing army in those countries and any military strategist will tell you that attacking a populous nation like Nigeria (above 150 million) does not make military sense, why then ?? He would wonder how less than 2000 French soldiers in Ivory Coast will overpower a whole nation and install a puppet president for them , he would wonder why Africans will still seek advices from Europeans after it became evident time after time that they don't have our best interest at heart . There are many examples like the one above and none of them will make sense if you just look at imperialism from an economic angle hence the Panafrican make same mistakes over and over and his enemies just knew which trap he is going to fall at every corner. There is certain form of Colonialism that deserves a class of its own, Information Colonialism. African are weakest men in the world. Sit around paying all day to sky daddy to solve our problems. thoth: Yeah like it used to be before colonialism before they subdued us and brought the useless religion they so much tout about ,that we took the Bible and swear then turn around and lie till devil squirms. Before they started teaching us that our fathers were savages that can't pack their own shit and that all those truths formed from generations of living together ,guidelines which guarded there community and ensured that a neighbor has a certain level of trust and love for his neighborh, that ensured that people don't outrightly swindle others in business as they do these days, that ensured that disputes were settled with common sense and reason rather than the injustice that the current European system imposes on the communities, causing long lasting hatreds and open ended unjust settlements, they taught us all those ancient principles were wrong. Before colonialism , that was before they went full scale with their concept of individualism and even made it fashionable to "not give a damn". Before the concept of "Ezi aha ka ego" became a laughing stock and "Onye ego bụ Eze " became the mainstay. Why do we accept their religion and their ways of life including educating system? Why do we continue to engrave it even though it us certainly not working for us? |

hansad: Bundle of deception. Agriculture can only make you feed well, but not fetch enough local cash or foreign money to build even a rail line from Abuja to Kaduna, or run Nigeria under present unitary govt system. Move over to developed Western countries, there a basket of Banana or groundnut from Third world countries sell for less than one Euro. In any case, there is no part of Nigeria that cannot produce enough food to feed people in its area. Reality is tht once crude oil cash stops coming to Nigeria, today's apostles of one Nigeria shall declare independence from Nigeria - take this fact to the Central Bank. R need to add value from agriculture from cocoa to chocolate, from Cohan to phone oil o had etc |

cap28: You have a very simplistic mindset which doesn't surprise me as a lot of Nigerians reason like you. Of course I have to bring in politics because politics is entertwined with history.
Just in case you haven't noticed, the Europeans and americans dominate the entire world because militarily they are stronger - now just in case you are still not getting the point - a nation that is militarily stronger than your own nation can overthrow or kill your leaders at will and that is exactly what happened with Buhari so its not about why Babangida allowed himself to be used, its about the fact that militarily the west are more powerful than us and can impose leaders on us whether we want them or not. Also in every society you will always have saboteurs and this is not unique to Nigeria but to countries all over the world. the united states has overthrown and killed progressive leaders in south America, the carribean and the arab world so your question should be: "why does the US and Europe go around the whole world intimidating and destroying progressive govts who have the interests of their people at heart" and not "why did babangida allow himself to be used"
people like you are so brainwashed that you cant bring yourself to ever question the white man because it is ingrained in you that the white man is your lord and master.
Again I see that you would rather blame mandela than blame the white man who clamped him in prison for 27 long years, yes mandela may have sold out by agreeing to allow the whites retain their hold over the land and resources of south Africa but you must remember that by 1990 mandela was already a broken man, he had suffered various psychological and physical breakdowns whilst in prison and it was for this very reason the white power structure chose him as their preferred peace broker as they knew they could get a better deal with him as he was no longer as militant and as radical as he had been when he was imprisoned in 1963, this does not however change the fact that Mandela put the needs of his nation before his own personal needs, therefore your statement about African leaders is not completely true because there are true freedom fighthers in Africa who would give up their lives for the freedom of their people, sadly these kind of leaders are never allowed to get into the corridors of power by Europe and the US. They even overthrown other western countries like Australia so of code they overthrown African nations. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/oct/23/gough-whitlam-1975-coup-ended-australian-independence |

cap28: The West once dominated and controlled parts of china but this was before their revolution, since then China has become too powerful for Europe and the US to dominate but trust me they are looking for a way to overpower China. At one point a US general even wanted the US to drop an atomic bomb on china because he forsaw China risng to become powerful. So they are embracing China now to some extent because they have no choice, also China is one of their main trading partner and the US also depends on China for credit facilities.
japan was once an imperial power but it was bombed into submission by the US and is now a puppet state of the US.
Saudi Arabia is a staunch ally of the US - In the 1970s it agreed to stabilise oil prices and side with the west against other arab nations and in exchange it received military protection from the US.
Malaysia and Singapore are not in the same boat as us as they have received huge financial aid and investment from the US and Europe in order to prevent a communist takeover by China.
Australians are descendants of the british and are treated as if they are british.
Kenya was and remains a puppet state of Britain, thousands of Kenyans were murdered by the british before the gained their token independence, the british own and run the Kenyan economy, indian immigrants also have more economic clout in Kenya than Kenyan people.
Namibia suffered one of the worst genocides in human history at the hands of the Germans (their former colonial masters) who exterminated over 100,000 indigenous people of this country, there are many documentaries on youtube about this and the germans still keep the skulls of some of the indigenous Namibian people in their museums on display to demonstrate their superiority over the African race. As a result of this extermination project Namibia has a very low population and 90% of the most fertile land is owned by the descendants of those German settlers while the majority black population lives in poverty. Do you think Ann African nation week ever have worked power? If so which country and when? |

ebdib: Self determination is too late. The world is global now and besides Africa is not even united. Heck Nigeria is not united. So what are you self determining (permit me to use that word) if the very existence as a nation is Inchoate and shaky? The world is global but North Korea is more self sufficient than Nigeria and we are talking about globalization? Nigerians can do everything that othr countries can do, we don't need anyone. What is the point of school if we go to foreigners for everything? |

I could dig up links of severe atrocities committed by the British colonialists in numerous countries. One atrocity does not a trend make.
I'm not trying to defend every french legacy but when I see the Brits and their face of jarus. I'll take the frenchies straightforwardness anyday I agree I don't like either Britain or France. We need to get off both and have self determination. |
