Oyo indigenes petition IG over herdsmen attacks

Indigenes of Oyo town, in Oyo State have raised the alarm over what they described as ceaseless herdsmen attacks on their homestead, urging the police high command to address the crisis for the safety of lives and properties.

In a petition written on behalf of the native Oyo community by Prince Adetona Gbadebo Adesiyan and Prince Adekunle Olawuwo Adesiyan which was addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba,the community decried ceaseless attacks on their homeland by the herdsmen.

This is coming just as they allege that their lives have been subjected to threats and harassments by some unknown people in the aftermath of their relentless opposition to the marauding herders.

In a statement issued on Friday, through their lawyer, Mr. Babatunde Okeniyi they are also seeking for protection from law enforcement agents, particularly, the police, saying they have since abandoned their hometown for fear of being killed by the assailants.

“Our lives are under threat over recent attacks on our community and the threat is real. We have abandoned home with no clear indication suggesting that we will return so soon. We are therefore calling on the police to come to our aid,” the brothers wrote in the petition.

According to them, they have gone into hiding after several attempts have been made on their lives and those of their family members by some persons.

This follows incessant tribal crisis between the Fulanis and Yorubas tribes in Oyo East Local Government Area of Oyo state.

ESN (until they lost focus and morphed into UGM) much to their credit decisively dealt with the fulani menace in the East, and considerably minimized the fulani bastards to pockets of attacks especially in Ebonyi and Enugu border areas... until they were finally flushed out in the wake of the killings in Ebonyi. I'm glad the South is awake though, the recent anti grazing ban mandate taken by the Southern governors was what was badly needed... and it MUST be enforced across the Southern states.

Please don't come to this thread to spread ethnic hate against the Fulani. There is no evidence that Fulani have done or even know who has done this dastardly act. Moreover, we have to be careful to not attach these acts to the Fulani tribe without conducting a proper investigation.

For now, we don't know exactly what happened and why, this could be the act of his fellow tribesmen, so let us not jump to conclusions and spread statements that harm the ethnic image of the Fulani.

Herdsmen kill five in Taraba community after peace meeting.

BARELY eight hours after leaders of Tiv and Fulani agreed to work for peace and end the renewed killings, five persons were reportedly murdered by herders at Ukoo Abaa village near Kufai Amadu in Takum Local Government Area.

Though the Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, David Misal, said he was not aware of the killings, local residents insisted five persons were killed on Sunday.

One of the residents, Mr. Paul Yade, told our correspondent on the phone that five persons were macheted to death at Ukoo Abaa village near the Taraba/Benue border.

“My uncle’s wife was attacked and robbed of all the money on her, while her daughter who tried to protest was cut several times with cutlass. She is receiving treatment at MDG hospital in Amadu.

“The attackers in their numbers killed five persons and proceeded to the neighbouring Benue State.

Meanwhile, stakeholders of Tiv and Fulani on Saturday signed agreement in Jalingo to end the killings and pave the way for the displaced people to return to their homes.

In a communiqué signed by Sarkin Fulani Bali, Alhaji Adamu Abacha, and Zaki David Gbaa, Ter Bali II and Chairman, Taraba State Tiv Traditional Leaders Council, the groups condemned the attacks and called for a ceasefire.
