Happy Valentine”, another neighbor greeted. This time it was the girl- neighbor with the numerous girlfriends. We became close friends after the blocked toilet system saga last two months. At the end, I had told her the truth and she had taken to me afterwards. Now, we live more humanly- saying and responding to greetings like we are enamored to each other.
“Fine sisi, come first make I sama u small talk”, I called to her. She rushed half ways, and turned, running back towards her flat.
“I dey come, make I carry sumtin for house first”, she answered as she rushed-in and came out momentarily toting a large polythene bag. As she swayed towards me, I smiled, recalling that not until last two month did we ever talk or become friends. Before then, we were a “cat and dog” bunch- waging a cold war against each other over the repetitive blockage of the toilet system.

She was against me, her case being that I bring so many girls home. It wasn’t just the moans and catcalls that did her in. But the thought that I was actually disposing the condoms I used into the toilet bowls and flushing them down, thus causing the frequent blockages.
I was not fazed by her insinuations after all, she did her moans too- she and those barbie-type, doll-like lesbian friends of hers. It was unimaginable what those girls were doing to each other’s bodies and emotions behind that door. They’d turned her accommodation to a Gommorrah of sorts
Unlike her, I had a stronger case which was beyond the din of humming vibrators over their loud moans every time they got to play house. My case was that I suspected those girls disposed their sanitary pads into the toilet and flushed them down. I was sure it was the cause of the blockages. Gradually, the malignant cold-war festered and broke into an open sore of hatred between us. It was our version of the “War of Sexes”
After the last cistern blockage, we went verbal. She rained several curses; I sent a score of abuses back. Her dolly-girls cooed in their slanderous side talks. The plumber eventually arrived and I decided to stand guard. When she joined me, I realized she was equally worried about the issue. There was no pretense here, we both had to ascertain the root of the problem. It is a shitty work plumbers do- shitty and smelly too- and it takes courage to stand the odour oozing from an open toilet inspection tank. Yet, we stood our grounds. It didn’t take long before the problem was traced: a blocked piping in the cistern drainage caused by two soggy sanitary pads jutting out from the pipe arm connecting her side to the chamber.
Immediately, she had started fuming and swearing to her innocence about the matter. Seeing some honesty in her denials, I instantly hushed her and told her that I knew it wasn’t her. She was so taken aback by my words that she stood there muted for a long moment. “I know it’s not you. Rather, it is those friends of yours. They have been throwing their pads in there and it’s a shame we have been accusing each other over other people’s transgressions”, I had continued. She had apologized after we shared the bills and paid up the plumber’s exorbitant service charge. Then, we became friends.

No sooner had we started talking than her friends started thinning out on their regular visits. Soon, nobody came at all. Soon enough too, she had worked herself to the top of.....................................

First things first. I don’t care much about what got St. Valentine killed, I also believe that February 14 makes no difference in any relationship whatsoever. So as not to sound entirely cynical, it’s a reminder. What does it remind us of? I do not know! It’s only significant since as humans, we clamour for whatever kind of praise or glorification we get.

I reside in Abuja hence I’m used to the urban way of doing certain things although one of the certain things in view particularly is Valentine’s day. For starters, This I know for sure.

Valentine in Abuja is tempting, colourful, glamourous and predictable too. A handsome man, a gorgeous lady, an exotic(okay, maybe decent is okay) car, a cozy restaurant in Asokoro, Maitam or Wuse II, pink/red dresses, red ties, shiny carrier bags with perfumes, cards and so so so on. Classic eh? That was Level 1.

Level 2 valentine by my own classification is for gorgeous couples without the car, expensive dresses etc. This category of lovers employ eateries(cheaper than most classy restaurants), visit parks(wonderland, millenium park etc) and surely have fun too. I admire this particular level because of the rather natural tone it comes with. No scripts, no overacting and so on which is something highly suspect in the case of the classy Level 1 lovers where suddenly the guy wants to OPEN DOORS……………………………………………………………

Premier legal counselor and human rights dissident, Mike Ozekhome, has responded to the seat warrant issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

CCT on Wednesday likewise commanded the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and the Director General, Department of State Services, DSS, Yusuf Magaji to impact his capture.

These are my explanations behind this solid view:

1. The NJC has since assumed control over the examination of the CJN as accommodated in areas 153,158,291,292(2) and segment 21, sections An and B to the third calendar to the Nigerian Constitution.

2. The EFCC has since composed a request against the equivalent NJC, utilizing indistinguishable proof.....

“Your what?” My sister stopped the car and looked back at me.

“Cynthia…”

“Look Victor, that girl has caused you enough pain.  I don’t think there is a need in going back there to see her… to open up old wounds.”

“But these wounds have not healed Ester. Don’t you see? Everything I try to do, she is always connected to it. She’s like a hook in my neck, and until I cut that thread, I won’t be able to live on.”

She sighed, and rested her back into the car seat. “Do you still love her?” she had to ask. She couldn’t ask if I hated Cynthia but rather she spoke of love.

“Just take me to her or I will do it myself.”

“Okay ooh, your wish. And you know what? God help me not to lose my temper when I see that little witch,” she hissed and started the car.

When the car pulled up in front of my old house, nothing felt familiar. I was a stranger in what was once my home. I looked at my sister and then back at the gate before finding the courage to push it open. As we stepped in, there was a little girl playing with her toys in the big compound. She saw us and smiled. She ran over to me and asked, “Are you looking for my mummy?” I knew I was staring into the eyes of the child I once thought was mine. She was so beautiful and she was the photocopy of her mother. She tugged on my shirt to get an answer to her question. I was dumbfounded; all the memories were rushing back in. The day Cynthia told me she was pregnant, the joy of that moment I haven’t felt before and I doubt I would ever feel again. The first time I held Iffy in my arms at the hospital, I was her father and she was my daughter. But looking down at her now, I was just a mere stranger; one of mummy’s conquest.

My sister who was obviously more familiar with kids moved closer to the little girl and asked, “Is your mummy home?” Iffy nodded her head and pointed to the front door. With her in front, we all marched to the door.

I knocked. She opened. It almost felt like a flashback to the day she dared to come back into my life after faking being dead but this time, I was the one who was back from the dead.

The instant our eyes met, her eyes widened in shock. Her face lost all its color. It was as if my presence had sucked up all the makeup on her face. Her lips began to tremble. She held the door half way and refused to open it further or close it either.  Her daughter then made herself presence known.

“Mummy” Her mother remained quiet, not sure if she heard her daughter.

“Come on honey…” She tried to shut the door as soon as her daughter was in, but I was smart enough to know she wasn’t going to let me in and so I held the door back.

“Cynthia, at least welcome me into my own home.” She heard my voice, the man she had lied to and claimed to have loved. She gave up and I slowly push the door fully open. The smell of cigarette filled the living room. The smell was so strong my sister began to cough.

“Victor this is not the place to do this. How can a mother place her child in this kind of environment?”

“I don’t need you to tell me how to raise my child.” Cynthia replied.

“Oh victor you had better warn this little smart mouth before I do something stupid.” She moved closer to Cynthia. “Look, I know all that you have done. I never had much regards for you but for his sake, I decided to let you in and this is how you pay our family back?”

Cynthia began to back up against the nearest couch. “For God sake, the child isn’t even his!” My sister was doing more of the talking while I tried to familiarize myself with the place I once called home.

“What is the matter? I heard…” Mrs. Ada, my house keeper walks in. The instant she saw me, she came running into my arms.

“My son, is this really you?”

“Wow. Mrs. Ada, what are you still doing here?” I was shocked to see her still working. She looked much older than she was the last time I saw her.

She sighed and looked at Cynthia. “She wouldn’t take care of the child so I had to stay.”

“Sugar what’s all this noise I’m hearing?” a male figure stumbles into the scene. The anger that had been building up inside of me finally gave way.

“Who is he, and what is he doing in my house!” I yelled.

“Look mehn, I think I should be the one asking you that question.” The young man looked boldly at me.

“Oh victor,” Cynthia began to cry, as she moved closer to me.

“Don’t you dare touch me.”...
