This kind embarrassment ehhh |
karcan:we can actually power our university with these technologies, but the problem is the inability of the authorities to patronise and try them out. |
Get a formulation, follow a procedure and stop making guess work. If you keep making guesses, you will end up, 1. Having poor quality products. 2. Products that are not consistent in quality. 3. And waste of raw material and money. Google the formulation for liquid soap or better still buy one of these e-books flying around on Nairaland. |
Picture 3. Bioelectricity from petroleum polluted waste water. Here we have a technology that generates electricity from waste water. It was present by Unilorin. In this case some sort of microorganism feeds on the petroleum polluted waste water and in turn generates electricity as well as cleaning the polluted water. So this does two things, generate electricity and clean the water in the process. Each cell is capable of producing about 0.45V of electricity. Picture 4. Biogas from rice husk. Unilorin had another technology to show case. This one is capable of producing biogas from rice husk and other agro waste. This can be used to generate cooking gas from waste plant material. The basic principle behind this technology is the ability of microorganism to feed on the waste and in the process give out some sort of gas, the biogas, probably methane. This gas is trapped and stored in a gas cylinder to be used as a cooking gas. Picture 5. Biodiesel and Biolubricant. This is another technology that was presented by Unilorin. This is capable of producing biodiesel via transesterification, a process by which oils are converted to alkyl esters otherwise biodiesel. So many other universities showcased their own technologies in alternative energy sources; solar bioenergy, Electromechanical energy conversion etc, So if they want, they can stop producing and improting petrol. We have alternatives that are not just viable but also eco-friendly. Thank you.

Picture 1. The Department of pure and industrial chemistry, Unizik showedcased a diesel plant that was powered by biodiesel. The biodiesel was produced from oils of non-edible seeds of Colocynthus culgaris and Sesamum indicum. There were several other biodiesel and biodiesel/diesel blends from several seed oils that were on deplay. So we can now think of having our power engines and motor engines powered by bidiesel. Picture 2. Biogas plant from Unilorin. This plant is capable of producing biogas from agricultural waste. This biogas can be used for cooking and to also generate electric thereby reducing our overdependence on fossil fuel.

Nigeria, today, is faced with a very big problem that is affecting all works of life. Petrol is now scarce and where available, the price is "on top of the iroko tree". Many are begining to think for an alternative means of surviving in this present situations. Few weeks ago Nnamdi Azikiwe University hosted the 6th Nigerian University Research and Development Fair. I was opportuned to attend the exhibition. I saw and learnt a lot. One of the things I learnt was that we have great potentials in several alternative energy sources. The ones that tickled my fantasy were in the area of Biodiesel and Biogas. Nnamdi Azikiwe University and University of Ilorin among other universities had a lot to showcase on this. I believe if these researchs and technologies are harnessed very well, we will not have a reason to suffer again in future because of fuel crisis. Below are some of the pictures of works done on these biodiesel and biogas. The pictures of the whole exhibition will be for another day. |

Every new day new foods and drinks are introduced into the Nigerian market. Having a NAFDAC number gives the food/drink quick acceptance in the market but does the NAFDAC number actually mean that the products are safe for human comsumption? I stumbled upon a drink when I travelled to Enugu earlier this week. This was the first time I am seeing the drink though it may have been in the market. I ordered for it and as usual I checked the content. What I saw shocked me. The drink have sodium benzoate and vitamin C as ingredients. Why was I shocked, you may ask. Let us briefly look at the two ingredients and the danger of having the two in foods and drinks. Sodium benzoate is a preservative, a chemical compound derived from a reaction of benzoic acid and sodium hydroxide. It is generally believed to be a carcinogenic additive(cancer causing additive) Though some food regulatory bodies across the world say it is safe because the amount used to preserve foods is very low, there is an "embargo" on its usage in food/drink. NEVER EVER COMBINE IT WITH VITAMIN C OR E. Why? Research have shown that sodium benzoate and vitamin C or even citric acid can react to form or rather forms BENZENE, a known CARCINOGEN. This drink contains sodium benzoate and vitamin C. Definitely bezene will be formed. Probably the manufacturers added vitamin C to increase the nutritional quality of the drink but this leaves me to ask, does this drink give nourishment or poison to those who take it? I guess you can answer the question now. You may argue that the quantity of sodium benzoate, Vitamin C in the drink or Benzene that may be formed are too small to have health implications. However, cancer in most cases if not all cases is as a result of cumulative effects of carcinogen in the human system. This is a soft drink, people drink soft drinks like water. Over time, the effect will probably begin to manifest. What then could have made them to use sodium benzoate and vitamin C in this drink? Already we have assumed the vitamin C may be to increase the nutritional qualities of the drink. Well, for sodium benzoate, it is among the cheapest if not the cheapest mold inhibitor in the market. As a preservative, it helps to extend the shelf life of foods and drinks. But in this case, with vitamin C, it shortens human life. Sorry for this long epistle and sorry I didn't include references but I believe one, two or more persons will learn from this. Check google for more information on this. Be cautious of what you put in your mouth. Next time you get a drink, don't just gulp, check the ingredients. Not just drinks but also packaged and processed foods. Note: Rapha Classic is a carbonated drink manufactured by Aqua Rapha owned by Fr. Mbaka. Lalasticlala, MissyB3 and tjskii, over to you iHart |
JanethEze:then don't make the caption of the thread to have suspense, so people won't be enticed to enter only to find link up and down!! |
JanethEze:I hate these link of a thing on Nairaland. if you ain't posting it completely, don't post at all! I will be watching you too...:-) |
Can you engrave on metals? I have a job you can do for me... |
“You don find wetin you go wear for
Saturday?”
“No oh, but I go enter market Friday, you
know I gats look fresh”
You thought that was a dialogue between two
girls, didn’t you? Ha-Ha! No. This conversation
was between two…. (Wait for it)… two Igbo
boys with acidic Igbo accents.
For a while, the duo went on and on about
trousers and shoes, belts, shirts and hats, all
for this a “Saturday event”. And what is this
event, you may ask? A birthday? Nope, A
thanksgiving service? I seriously doubt that.
A red carpet event? Psssht, oh please.
As I sat, slightly cramped in the Ke-Ke, in
between the two, I heard one of them utter a
powerful four letter word that shed light on
what the conversation was about. This word,
which when mentioned, gives young scholars
and Obasanjo brief moments of extremely
heavy breathing; JAMB. They were talking
about what to wear to the JAMB examination
on Saturday.
These two young men, leaders of tomorrow,
yammering about moccasins matching their
jackets were actually talking about an exam,
not just any exam. The exam that gives Naija
youths sleepless nights and days filled with
thoughts of the impending doom. The big
J.A.M.B, the second most hated word in
Nigeria, right after “Buhari”.
Still eavesdropping, I heard one of them ask
the other “But guy, you don read? As in, you
dey ready for the exam?”, then the other
responded with a violent “Abegggiiii, no
start!”
I frantically searched for a handkerchief in
my purse, for you see, “Agbero number 2” shot
bullets of spit into my ear when he responded
to “ Agbero number 1”.
I finally found a tissue, and as I sat there in
silent rage, tissue in ear, still in denial,
I thought to myself; “Are these two idiots
seriously arguing about who will look fresher
on the day of the exam?” Yes, yes they were.
As always, in every situation, I deduce a
theory. In this case, there are actually
two suitable ones;
—–Either THEY are retards
OR
——-They ARE retards.
Well either way,
So wetin concern me?
P.S. We need to teach our youths; our future
leaders that Knowledge is Power! |
OMG! Reckless driving, bad road or faulty vehicle? Thank God no life was lost... |
Good, but please where do you stay? |
In simple terms, that's "Igbonization". Only the Igbos will understand! gbosaa: |
Ayoolla:Greetings Ayoolla, sorry I abandoned this thread. I later went for an electric driven soap cutter. But I still have interest on the pneumatics. I just want to have a hands on deck experience on assembling it from compressor, valve to pneumatics cylinder. Is it something you can do very well? |
Op you are really trying but that video is nothing to write home about. A little bit of suggestion: 1. List out your chemicals, apparatus and explain what each one does. Try and find there correct names(brand name and real chemical name)... What do you mean by "a chemical called rice, nitozon, soda hash"? Or better still learn the correct pronunciation. No insult intended. 2. Show your MEASURED out chemicals for a particular batch size. What do you mean that your instinct will tell you when you have added the right quantity of water? 3. Explain the sequence you will use to mix your chemicals and why you used such sequence if necessary. 4. Mix your chemicals and make the liquid soap. If you follow this method you will have a good video. Note that I capitalised "MEASURED" because in manufacturing, there is what we call quality and product consistency. Having a standard measurement of all your chemicals will make you to be able to reproduce you product with little or no compromise to quality. I will want you to produce a better video next time, please. |
Na teacher-"Corpers" dey do this kind thing, especially for staff room!!! |
OUK from Abia state installed Ohakim in Imo state! |

I need contributions please... |
@Ayoolla Thank you for your contribution. I stay in the east. I have check for it in head bridge market Onitsha. I was only able to see the cylinder. I headed to Electricals along owerri road to look for other components but I couldn't see them. I will head back to Onitsha any time after 4th Jan, to continue the search for the necessary components. I may proceed to Lagos if need be. Do you have some technical know-how as to how to assemble the system? Thanks for the video. |
Happy new year. Please I have a project I intend working on. The project is all about designing and fabricating an automatic soap cutting table. This machine will operate based on pneumatics. So I need some assistance on how I will go about the project. The problems I have with this project is 1. a bit about how and where I can source the necessary materials like the pneumatic cylinder, valve, compressor, panel/circuit, sensor and other materials that may be necessary. 2. Any other information that can help me to achieve the aim of this project. I know we have engineers here who can help. Please I need interesting and engaging comments and suggestions from you. Thank you. |
Good morning great people. I am waiting in anticipation for suggestions and comments... |

Good day and compliments of the season. Please I have a project I intend working on. The project is all about designing an automatic soap cutting table. This machine will operate based on pneumatics. So I need some assistance on how I will go about the project. The problems I have with this project is 1. a bit about how and where I can source the necessary materials like the pneumatic cylinder, valve, compressor, panel, sensor (probably an infra red sensor) and other materials that may be necessary. 2. Any other information that can help me to achieve the aim of this project. I know we have engineers here who can help. Please I need interesting and engaging comments and suggestions from you.
