Now you are talking like you gone to a lecture theatre .
You know you can pass parameters like static routes and NTP when a computer on the LAN boots up.
When it boots up, not when it is off.
Again, you are not actually asking yourself how software knows when to do the things you are asking it to.
You are thinking about it from a higher level.

my pc last sync with the server was 1am. over 20 hours ago. so if my cmos battery is dead, and i start the pc after leaving it off for five days while working in a 9 to 5 office, i can very likely have my pc working with wrong time and date. this was THE EXACT SCENARIO with a member of my team

by the way - since you are supposed to be the leader to that small boy, people do not put pcs in landfills - they send them to ewaste recycling centers. the least you can do is try not to sound like the cl;one of the dunce troll of this thread
This is another problem.

In a LAN you have the NTP server. If you don't know about Windows Server , any computer on the domain automatically uses the Domain Controller to obtain the time. An inhouse exchange server must have correct timestamps for every message sent or recieved. If you set your domain Controller time wrong every domain PV will display that irrespective of it's CMOS. Not always if you manually set every workstation to use a different NTP server. Once a workstation boots up ,using DHCP it gets info from the nearest DC including the time.
A standalone can also be set to use a time server
You are taken for granted how a computer works.
If you use WOL, how does a computer know when to poll for that signal when the power is off?
A compter is a basic clock with instructions happening at set intervals (rising edge, falling edge, etc) based on that clock.

They can use NTP , can't they?
The RTC is like a metronome.
It keeps everything in sync and tells events when to occur.
The computer has to know even when to go the the NTP server and get the date, something tells it that.

The basic element of computer architecture is the clock.

I believe bemeruca has a Mac. They are usually ahead, Bill Gates stole windows from Apple.
You don't seem to even understand the function of a RTC or even a clock if you say that.
Computers need synchronization.
Without a clock a computer won't run.

My laptops don't have Cmos battery. My surface and HP. The macs don't have it.

Cmos battery usage does not have anything to do with the Generation of processor you are running. It is a motherboard design choice. Some manufacturers keep it there as a easy way to reset bios. Some keep it to keep pc time correct. But you don't need it. Your pc will work fine without the battery
Dumbass still being a dumbass.
You should go and argue with Basilico and Grok.
Foreign Affairs › Re: American Politics Thread: Trump Is The 47th President! by IjeBos(m): 9:43pm On Apr 12, 2025
basilico:
I asked Grok.

Modern laptops without a traditional CMOS battery still maintain real-time clock (RTC) functionality by using alternative methods to power and store system time and BIOS/UEFI settings. Here's how they achieve this:
Non-Volatile Memory (NVRAM or Flash Memory): Instead of relying on a CMOS chip powered by a battery, many newer laptops store BIOS/UEFI settings in non-volatile memory, such as flash RAM. This type of memory retains data without continuous power, eliminating the need for a traditional CMOS battery to preserve settings like boot order or hardware configurations.

Integrated RTC with Main Battery or Supercapacitor: The RTC, which keeps track of time and date, is often integrated into the motherboard's chipset or a dedicated RTC module. Instead of a separate CMOS battery, the RTC can draw minimal power from the laptop’s main battery (even when the device is off) or a small supercapacitor. These components provide enough power to maintain the clock for extended periods without needing a dedicated coin-cell battery.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) Sync: Many modern laptops rely on internet connectivity to sync time via NTP servers upon boot. If the RTC loses track of time (e.g., due to complete power loss), the operating system can automatically update the clock once connected to the internet, reducing dependency on a local battery-powered clock.

Soldered or Embedded RTC Battery: In some cases, rather than a removable CMOS battery, laptops use a small, soldered RTC battery directly on the motherboard. These are designed to last the device's lifespan and are less prone to replacement issues, maintaining RTC functionality without user intervention.

Power Management Features: Advanced power management in modern chipsets allows the RTC to operate in ultra-low-power states, drawing negligible current from the main battery or residual power circuits, ensuring the clock keeps running even when the laptop is powered off or unplugged.

Why Move Away from Traditional CMOS Batteries?
Space Constraints: Thinner laptops lack room for a bulky coin-cell battery and its holder.

Longevity: Non-volatile memory and integrated solutions reduce maintenance needs.

Cost and Simplicity: Eliminating a separate battery simplifies manufacturing and design.

Trade-Offs
Power Dependency: If the main battery is completely drained or removed and no internet is available, the laptop may lose time/date settings until synced.

Repair Complexity: Soldered RTC batteries or integrated solutions can be harder to service compared to replaceable CMOS batteries.

In summary, laptops without CMOS batteries use non-volatile memory for settings, integrated RTC modules, and power from the main battery or supercapacitors, supplemented by NTP for time accuracy. This approach suits compact, modern designs while maintaining essential functionality.

So, exactly as I said.
Maybe ask Grok next time before running ur mouth.

When the power is off, what maintains the clock on a "modern" computer?

This is what you said.
bemeruca:
Modern laptops don't need Cmos battery. They don't even use CMOS ram to store bios settings.

Jesus, you never know when to stfu. You just need to feel you are as smart as other people and think bullshitting accomplishes that.

What you are unknowingly referring to is UEFI and the settings are stored in nonvolatile memory just like BIOS settings and thus need to be powered.

What engineers did for some laptops was find an alternative way to provide power for the UEFI/Bios settings and for the RTC without the cmos Battery by using the laptop battery and a cap.

You are an absolute dumfuq and should stop spreading misinformation.

Where else would bios/uefi settings be stored.

At least you get sense, you don't think like GloriousGbola who thinks only Dell XPS and ThinkPad are worth using even if other computers can serve your needs. What's sad is he has been using a 2015 ThinkPad.

Good, you save money and all that. Look at GloriousGbola using 3 pc on one table with 3 monitors 😂🤣😂🤣😂

You mean your men,
52 yo men should be thinking about their children's school fees, not women's sex. Did your boy update you on how his daughter is doing at college?

What misfired in your head that made you start telling me about CMOS battery as you lie the system is from 4 years ago?

For someone designing RAMs that one was a blunder.
You are the one who looks stupid here.
I have about 3 monitors I use. 2, 27" and a 15" portable. I can have 2 to 3 machines plugged in or displaying a couple of virtual machines.
Or when I'm working on something I can have it output on one of the monitors.
The more monitors the easier workflow for me and most people. Most people agree.

Below is a screenshot of the laptop specs. It's an 11gen i7. You can google the year it came out.
Below that is a screenshot of the innards. On the top left circled is the CMOS battery,

You love running your mouth about shit you have 0 idea about and are always wrong.
If you had shame you'd delete your profile.
But, no you'll spend another 8 hours here running your mouth, being an expert about shit you have no expertise in.

1.) As if your opinion/understanding on anything technology related matters
2.) If I found a landfill laptop that I could refurb that serves my needs, I would happily do so and use it.

The Trump DOJ is trying to have Smirnov, the Ex-F.B.I. Informant who made up the stories about the Bidens being corrupt released from jail.
I guess it's now clear who told him to lie.
Levels of corruption here.

The indictment of Mr. Smirnov was a significant embarrassment to congressional Republicans who embraced his bogus claims as evidence that the former president was the head of a “crime family.” It was the type of assertion he included in his official reports to a bureau handler.

Mr. Patel was a particularly enthusiastic promoter of the allegations and has never publicly distanced himself from Mr. Smirnov’s story.

After F.B.I. agents had debriefed Mr. Smirnov and decided his account of the bribery allegations was not credible, Mr. Patel joined Republicans in accusing the bureau, which he now leads, of covering up genuine allegations of wrongdoing by the Biden family.
