budaatum: Point is the current 9 people on the Supreme Court (though only 5 I think) has now established that having an abortion is not a fundamental right. But like the constitution framers that initially got the 3/5 compromise wrong, this too can be rectified by we the people at an election, which I have no problem with.
Not all states will abolish abortions, and like in slavery times, one can always migrate to a state that doesn't abolish abortions, and much easier too than migrating from a state that did not abolish slavery. And states that make abortion illegal will eventually suffer from their abolishing action, since those who believe abortion should be a fundamental right will mass migrate to pro-abortionist states, and companies will be reluctant to set up business in those states because their products and shares will be boycotted by the pro-abortionists, and those companies will have a smaller pool from which to hire from which will economically disadvantage those states.
It is a pity that some America states are stepping backwards into Handmaid's Tale territory, but I believe the consequences will make them moderate themselves, just as the "abortion is murder" brigade are gradually becoming 15 weekers. Agree what the current situation is, but to me it is akin to having states decide if black people should vote. It's ridiculous. I wasn't sure comparing slavery migration to abortion migration was apt. But the more I thought about it, it is. Just like slavery migration, abortion migration isn't easy if at all possible. A lot of slaves died during slavery and trying to migrate to states that were free, a lot of women will die (and have died) with preventable/treatable pregnancy issues and will die in transit to states that do allow abortion. But, sometimes I think you talk of race/slavery issues in a very facile way. |

What the Supreme Court decided regarding the abolition of Roe v Wade is that every state should decide for itself, which is not the stance that was taken regarding slavery for obvious reasons.
Those obvious reasons are established by the constitution of the United States of America.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
You can't continue to justify enslaving some unless you decide that "ourselves" excludes some. We are a Federal Republic and thus there are certain powers abrogated to the federal government and others left to the states. Fundamental rights shouldn't be left to the states or be able to be given or taken away on the whims of 9 people. Before this ruling was Roe v. Wade which did define abortion as a fundamental right under the right to Privacy enshrined in the 14th amendment. The 3/5 compromise in fact enshrined slavery in the constitution. The obvious difference was the civil war. My point is even the framers got it wrong for ideological reasons as did this supreme court. |

Think death as a sentence for committing murder. We the people in a state can decide that any one who commits murder should be sentenced to death. It's why some states have such laws and many don't. We the people decided, and thankfully, most of us in most states have decided otherwise. And just like most countries don't have death sentence laws do most states not have anti-abortion laws because we the people decided.
It is the fear of we the people that has made the anti-abortion brigade become abortion at 15 weeks. Principles go out the window if it loses them power and seats, as they are showing us. We are the United States of America. So the will of people would encompass all the people of the USA right not just by state? But the question is, is bodily rights an inherent civil right which shouldn't be left up to the whims of a majority of people in each individual state but guaranteed to everyone in the country? There was a time when a portion of the country thought slavery should have been a states rights issue as well. This election will be a good test for the abortion is murder crowd. |

Have you ridden a train in the UK or anywhere? 3.) If you look at the message that is US time. Add 5 hours and it will give you UK time. The text exchange happened between 10am -12:30 pm. Left my hotel around that time, which is generally checkout. 4.) I woke up, walked her to the train platform near the hotel. We left the hotel probably at 7-8am(based on the text message) as she had an early meeting. I originally took the train to the hotel from the Heathrow. 5.) I go back to my hotel, slept some, got breakfast, showered, packed and checked out. It is now around noon. 6.)The train attendant I assume works at least an 8 hour shift. He was stationed in the station/at the platform, not sure what his duties were. So, most likely would have been on duty between 7 and 12:30pm. Mr. Inspector Clouseau aka the illiterate detective Basilico. Lol It's always odd to hear a person from a country plagued with tribalism not be able to comprehend the illogicalness of racist acts. I've never been to USA, and don't particularly like the culture of the place. It's economically first world over there, but some things are just so backward. I lived and worked in Mexico City for a year and still never bothered. I'm scared someone might talk nonsense to me then shoot me when I talk back, which is not a fear I'd have in UK because no one has the right to carry. You just need to note how no one is trying to take over anyone's womb in UK like some are there to understand how far back USA is going.

Racism is often not overt. But we Brits have our Racism Radars with which we detect it these days, and any whiff of it is opposed. Har Har. I've ridden trains there. This guy was on the platform and not on the train. Was never on the train. Came from the side of me. I'm not sure how it works or what his job was. We don't have them in the US. But he was still there on the platform after the 2nd train she got on left, as I found him to "chat" with him And yes, that's the thing about racism. I had to check with myself to figure if I did something wrong. Did I miss something, was I riding the train the wrong way, etc. My friend, sorta embarrassed, with the requisite privilege to see the best in people's actions, tried to downplay it as the trains there have to be/are on time. So, maybe he just wanted it to move along. That was strained. But asking "why she was with me", said it all. And honestly, I was furious, what saved him was my fake corporate side kicked in; I wasn't sure if one of her clients, bosses, etc. was on that train. Edit: Added the Whatsapp of the Chat after the incident.. for the people like self haters like Bemeruca who'll use anything to doubt racism. This gives the counters of the story. We didn't get into it as we chatted later on. The girl didn't take it seriously then or was trying to calm me down or was concerned as I was taking the same train to the airport. Who knows. Actually going to reach out to her later tonight and get her perspective on it again.

We don't have the situation you described where everyone in a small town including the police, would be so blatantly racist because we've had our Black Lives Matter decades ago and people have learnt not to be so racist. These days, other white folks on the bus and at the bus stop would raise a stink if it happened. Interesting, the US doesn't have anything similar to that. You're supposed to carry certain documents and they can look up other deets on a database. Outside of that they would write you a ticket and then you could appeal it in court. Learned something new. When I was in the UK not to long ago on one of my 1 day layovers, I stayed at a hotel near the airport. A friend went to dinner with me and spent the night. The next AM I walked her to the train to head to work. She was obviously dressed up, suit etc for her corporate finance gig. Me, I was in shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops (I just got out of bed and walking her was a last minute decision). The train arrived and as I waiting to enter (was going to ride with her), the guy on the platform (not sure what he's called), walked over, told me the train was full and to step off. Just me. It wasn't, it was just taking time as someone was blocking the entrance. I asked why, he wouldn't answer and the train took off. My friend stepped off before then. He started walking off and I confronted him. I was so confused. The train was clearly not full. Felt like there was something I was missing. I had stern words for him, pisssed my friend was now late for work, and he looked over at her and asked why she was with me. And then it all made sense. She was this white woman, cleary doing well for herself by the way she was dressed with her LV purse, and I was this black guy in shorts and a t-shirt at 8 am of a workday on a platform with other people who looked and dressed similar to her. She saw the look in my eyes and calmed me down. She was confused and taken aback as well. We waited for the train and I took off. She was late and I was embarrassed. I went and found him when the train took off to exact a toll, we had a round of terse conversation. I got his info and then realized the pernicious thing about racism. Though, to me it was clear what he had done. He could stand behind the fact that he believed the train was full and needed to let the train move on to get to it's destination on time. I was in London for a about 10 more hours. So that was that. |

35-40 years ago, I was constantly stopped just for driving a Ford Gti, which was considered to be a high performance car that I was assumed to be too young (and black) to drive. One week alone I had 3 producers to present my insurance and license at a police station within 14 days so I did. I gave the cop the first one and he registered my documents, then I gave him the second and he registered my documents again, and then I gave him the third one, and even he was shocked I had three in such a short time, and he was pissed I hadn't given him all 3 in one go. It was the last producer I ever had.
I was also once stopped for speeding though I wasn't speeding. It was an underpass on my way home from uni that I knew had cameras and I wasn't stupid. Cops checked my license and asked where I was from, so I gave my address, and was then asked where my parents were from "with a name like that", to wit I asked what my parents had to do with them stopping me. They then asked if they could search my car, and on finding nothing they said my tire had a gash on the side and was therefore defective and they gave me a fine with points on my license and 2 weeks to contest it if I would. So I wrote to the court what I've stated above, and that I'd brushed against the kerb on my way home and my tire fixer was just down the road where I was going to get my tire fixed as I didn't want to stop in the middle of a highway.
At court, the judge asked me if I was guilty or not, and I said I wasn't, so he asked the police to present their case and the lawyer for the police said the policeman who stopped me had refused to appear in court to testify, so the case was thrown out. Numerous times after that police would follow me for a while and eventually drive off because when they radio in to check my details they discover I've had producers and I'm not someone they can easily push over, I eventually found.
If I live in a small town where everyone is racist, then I would seriously need to check my head and ask why that's the town I choose to live and work in when I can very easily move my black ass elsewhere. But these days, one can sue for loss of earnings and mental health distress and for one's legal fees too, and I'm sure I can find an out of town lawyer to help me sue if I have evidence to prove the bus driver did not let me on the bus because of the colour of my skin, which I would have these days because the bus would likely have it's own CCTV showing the bus driver being racist, and the incentive for the lawyer is that he can sue for cost so it costs me nothing if I win.
That racist cretin of 35 years ago outsmarted me and I learnt from it and have since placed myself in the privileged position I am now in such that never again ever since, you see. In fact, it's like your "you can't know a place if you haven't lived there", same as I wouldn't know what to do if I hadn't had the experience I had that taught me what to do.

The transformer in front of my house in Obanikoro in the 70s would blow and we would be Nepad for 6 or more weeks, yet I still meet people who lived on the Island telling me they never had power cuts at all. Personally, I think they had auto-kick-in generators that we never had, but hey. At the end of the day, whether they had Nepa or not, mostly everyone understands what "Nepa'd" means. It's ingrained in the culture, through jokes, meme's etc. Part of the national DNA. And if you didn't live there you really wouldn't understand it the same. Is there really a discussion as to whether you have to really experience something to fully understand it? budaatum: I don't think you are conversing with them, and I don't see you stooping to the depths they stoop to to bully you if you asked me, but if your time is as valuable as you claim, I think they'd get much less of it because they really are not worth the time you give them, I'd think.

budaatum: If you did believe the above by the way, then the logical conclusion is to not discuss a place with those you've assumed "can't know a place" they've never lived and are ignorant about the place they haven't visited, unless they are paying you to educate them about the place they have not visited, which does not seem to be the case here since they refuse to learn from you who has visited or lived in the place.
From my experience, people can live in a place and be completely ignorant about the place, and some can know a lot about places they've never visited. You'd be amazed how many people visit or live in UK and don't understand how simple road markings can have evolved from the 10 Commandments. You are right. I came to this thread to talk to Nigerians who had similar experiences. So, Nigerians who both understood Nigeria and the US. Unfortunately that's not what I found. There are distinct differences between Nigeria and the US culturally and if you haven't been/lived there you probably wouldn't understand. And if one can't acknowledge that, they are letting their pride and ego speak making it even harder to have a discussion and understand the differences. You are right about ignorant people. But I usually don't hang around ignorant people. |

I don't, because everyone around me decides to eat poo, join in and eat poo with them. Ex. Driving in Lagos. I used to drive in Lagos like I would drive in the US. I would trafficate and wait for someone to give me space to enter. It rarely happened. Finally, my g/f would laugh and told me to let her drive. But she was right, in order to get anywhere driving I had to be more aggressive. If I didn't acclimate to that, I couldn't drive. Sometimes, you have to acclimate to the environment you're in or leave the environment. budaatum: I live in UK, and can say that I have barely experienced racism in UK, and by your own admission of not actually living here and only "just a brief trip", I guess I can say you don't know what you talking about. But that would be rather silly of me since despite me living here and not experiencing racism, that does not mean others haven't.
You might not know this, but how one is treated largely depends on oneself. I hold myself in such a way that being racist to is not others preferred treatment of me, just as grabbing my bag or trolling me fails too.
I can't possibly have decided some are stupid idiots and then spend my time being stupid idiots with them. That's just way too unhavard for me and my liking, and a complete waste of my time and effort and learning. This is a lot. I've spent considerable time in the Uk when me ex was there for for grad school. Stayed near Leicester Sq. You can't possibly believe that racists are only racist to people who don't hold themselves a certain way. Sounds too much like blaming racism on the people who are bearing the brunt of that racism. For your information, and so you don't just rely on your thinking, my last time in Nigeria was January 2014-April 2016, during which I wasn't just visiting, but worked there. And no one tried to grab anything of mine, because I don't put myself in situations where bag grabbing is possible, same as I don't let stupid idiots grab my time on here.
Those whom I let around me know not to try such nonsense with me for starts, and I don't walk the Nigerian streets with a "grab my bag" label on my forehead.
It's a choice, you see. I can sit with bag grabbers and moan about my bag being grabbed, or move myself so I'm amongst people who regard and respect me enough not to try grabbing my bag. I also don't have to wait "until the 4th or 5th person tries to grab my bags". Once I've "embarrassed" and told the first person not to grab my bag, they'd tell those who follow that my bag is not grabbable.
One can let others dictate the situations one finds oneself in and whom one gives one's bag and time to, is the point, as opposed to being at the whim of their grabbing and then repeatedly moaning about one's bag and time being grabbed. Besides, it would be rather odd and silly of me to claim "my body my choice", if my bag and time were subject to the grabbing of others, I'd think. I can not be in Nigeria for 3 months and it still takes me aback when I land. There is just a different mentality in Nigeria vs. the West for whatever reason. I use a protocol officer and from the time I land to the time I get into my car, I can count the times someone tries to grab a bag and usher me somewhere. And I'm not saying it's nefarious, just aggressive. My friends and I talk about it all the time. My friend went as far as to question whether he thought rotaries could work effectively in Nigeria. And it's not just me. I was in a dealership servicing a car on one trip. The manager came by. He was new to Naij and we were just chatting. He told me how when he first landed, he was aghast that his driver was running lights and speeding and cutting people off. Told him to cut it out. A month later he found himself doing the same thing. And you really can't know a place until you live there. Whenever I travel, the experience on the ground always changes my view of it. And that's just a brief trip. The same is even in Western countries. I didn't realize how much racism was in the UK, until I had a bad experience there on a trip. |
