A 27-year-old unemployed man, Williams Eromosele, on Wednesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged with theft of N9, 200 from the church offertory box. The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and breach of peace. Eromosele, however, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N150, 000 with two sureties in like sum. The Magistrate, Mrs A. A. Adetunji, said the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions. She also said that the addresses of the sureties must be verified and adjourned the case to Jan. 25 for mention. Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Mameh, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 3 at 11. 00 a.m. at Catholic Church on Musa Yar’dua Street, Victorial Island, Lagos. Mameh said the accused also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by unlawfully entering the church to steal from the offertory box. “The accused dipped his hands into the box and stole N9, 200.” The offences contravened Sections 166(d) and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Media reports indicates that there is a complete breakdown of order and discipline at the 21 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. The report states that the soldiers deployed to rout Boko Haram from Sambisa Forest in Borno State turned against their officers and fired gunshots indiscriminately. The troops complained of general mistreatment and threatened to kill any officer that stood in their way. “The brigade is based in Bama but is currently deployed at Bula Bello in Sambisa for Operation Rescue Final ” “But suddenly soldiers started mutinying at 6AM today, firing in all directions and threatening to pull out of the operation”. “As some of them fire gunshots, some started preparing vehicles to move out of location. They also warned officers to steer clear or they would be shot dead. “They are saying their commanders have been treating them badly and telling them lies. As I speak to you, the firing is still going on, and there is confusion everywhere.” The Nigerian Army is yet to issue a statement on the incident. Itse Sagay, chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, says the appointment of Ibrahim Magu, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), will be “renewed” whether he is confirmed or not. On Thursday, the senate refused to confirm Magu’s appointment after leaving the matter pending for five months. But in a previous chat with The Interview, which was only revealed on Thursday, Sagay said: “Whether they like it or not, he (Magu) will be there. His chairmanship will keep on being renewed. “Since Nuhu Ribadu left, we have not had a man with such sterling qualities as Ibrahim Magu and whether they like it or not, Magu will be there until he completes his term under the law.” The EFCC chairman has a four-year tenure. From the EFCC Act, non-confirmation does not impair his duties. Azu Ishiekwene, managing editor (MD)/editor-in-chief, described the edition as “arguably the best kept secret in the anti-corruption war”. In the interview, Sagay said Magu’s delayed confirmation was “corruption fighting back”. Also speaking on corruption in the judiciary, he said what retiring chief justices collect off the books is “frightening and totally unrelated to what the judiciary is entitled to”. The National Judicial Council (NJC) recently suspended seven justices on allegations of corruption and two of them have so far been arraigned. The Interview said its investigations, which Sagay neither confirmed nor denied, indicated that the NJC pays retiring justices up to N800m in cash and provides a house valued at N500m, off the books. The practice started around 2010 and virtually all retired CJs have benefited from it. “Something very serious is happening there,” Sagay said. “Those rumours have some basis.” Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/news-sagay-magu-will-efcc-chairman-whether-senate-likes-not/

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate payment of all entitlements due to the Super Falcons, record winners of the African Women Championship. Abba Kyari, chief of staff to the president, disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday, saying Buhari summoned Solomon Dalung, minister of sports, and Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, over the saga. Kyari had earlier received the protesting players at Aso Rock gate. Responding to questions posed by state house correspondents on the issue, Kayri said: “The problem has been resolved. They have done us proud and we congratulated them. “The ministries of sport and finance have been ordered to pay them tomorrow. I don’t know the details of the arrears but they have been directed to pay.” The players refused to check out of their hotel in Abuja, insisting that they would leave only after their entitlements had paid by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). They also refused to hand over the trophy they won in Cameroon to Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). They staged a protest at the national assembly where Buhari presented the 2017 budget.
